Special considerations for employment of veterans with service-connected disabilities
In Ohio, two laws apply to the employment of veterans: the federal Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA), which provides reemployment rights to returning veterans, and Ohio's ban on military status discrimination, which goes into effect on March 18. If a returning veteran is injured, though, another law might come into play, the ADA. Earlier today the EEOC published guidance for employers on how to handle veterans with service-connected disabilities under the ADA. The following summarizes the EEOC's key points: How does USERRA differ from the ADA? USERRA protects the reemployment rights of those who leave their civilian jobs to serve in the uniformed services. The ADA prohibits employers from discriminating against qualified individuals with disabilities

Making Fun Of Other People's Disabilities Is Not Cool - It's Cruel
MamaP posted something about these 14 year old girls who were making fun of people with Tourette's Syndrome (Aug 15th post titled Tic'd off) and it made me furious. I went to YouTube to try to find it - but to no avail. I was ready to rag on these girls - and I was hoping that somehow their parents can be told of their cruel acts. Maybe not finding the particular video was a good thing because I was planning on embedding it here to "humiliate" them. But if I do that, then I would be going down to their level, and that I don't want to do. Granting that these girls did not intend to be cruel, that they were just having fun, - they need to be taught that "having fun" at the expense of someone else's humiliation is unkind.Since I did not find that particular video, I decided to make a simple post addressed to us parents to remind us to teach our kids kindness and compassion - especially to those with disabilities. If you are doing it already - great. If you have tweens and teenag

But my in-laws are plagued with food allergies, from wheat to shellfish to milk, so when I saw this information I immediately thought of them. And, of course, they’re not alone. Food allergies are becoming more and more prevalent these days, and some of them are serious enough to require hospitalization. That is the last thing you want to deal with, especially on vacation. So, be sure to read up on these useful tidbits.

Advocates for Students With Disabilities Balk at Proposed NCLB Changes
Education Week reports:As Congress wrestles with reauthorizing the 5½-year-old No Child Left Behind Act, some disability-rights advocates fear high standards for students with disabilities could be sacrificed as states seek more flexibility in the law. Some education groups, as well as lawmakers, have called for more choice in how states can administer the law’s accountability provisions, including greater power for school-based teams to decide what type of assessment a student receiving special education services should take. That’s a step away from grade-level achievement as a goal for all students, said James H. Wendorf, the executive director of the National Center for Learning Disabilities, a New York City-based group that works to provide opportunities for children and adults with learning disabilities. The law needs tweaks, not wholesale changes to its ambitious achievement goals, he believes.Mr. Wendorf’s group advocates on behalf of the largest group of children served un

Ifyou adopt from an animal shelter, find a stray or take oneof your neighbor's puppies you won't get a health guaranteeor probably any information regarding the health of yournew family member. Either way, there are no guaranteesthat your puppy will grow up without medical problems. Public School Cultivates Learning Disabilities
By Mimi Rothschild Joel Turtel, author of “Public Schools, Public Menace” cites a harrowing tale of the public school’s incompetence. He was a volunteer reading instructor some time ago and was asked to help a young boy read. He was dismayed to find that the child was never taught to sound out words using phonics, but simply memorized words that were simple enough to sight read. As a result, the boy insisted on reading only certain books that he had been able to memorize. When Turtel expressed to the boy’s parents that the reason why their child has not excelled in reading is not due to a learning disability or disinterest in reading, but because he had never actually learned how to read. When the school’s administrators found out about his suggestion, they were furious and demanded that he leave the premises. This heartbreaking story is indicative of a greater problem that is endemic to the public school way. Reading is perhaps the most tangible of s

Embryo Screening Used to Create Babies with Disabilities
Embryo screening has been going on for some time now and has continued to be a controversial topic.  But now there is a procedure to where parents can choose to have their child be born with the same disabilities that they have (such has being a dwarf, deaf, etc.).  These parents believe that they are not disabled and that there way of life would provide the best for their children.  However, is this a personal reason or is it truly best for their children?  But the real issue is to whether or not embryo screening, especially in this situation, is unethical or not?  Also, where do you draw the line if parents are allowed to make these decisions that will drastically effect the outcome of that baby’s life?  In my opinion this seems a little too extreme and hopefully someone will step in and stop, because this procedure is already being performed by several medical facilities!  more info >>
