      Food Safety's Dirty Little Secret
From the first reports of a salmonella outbreak this spring, it took a full 89 days before jalapeño and serrano peppers correctly came under suspicion as the culprit. During that period, as more than 1,440 victims trickled in to hospitals, federal officials struggled to trace the source of the outbreak, erroneously singling out tomatoes for weeks before homing in on peppers. No sooner had that ou

      Cindy McCain's Dirty Little Secret
As the right wing begins its election season hatchet job on Michell Obama, don't hold your breath waiting for the mainstream media to talk about Cindy McCain's little brush with the dark side. From Stephen Elliott at the Huffington Post: "It's a psychedelic experience this week, watching Cindy McCain out on the campaign trail, attacking the opponent's wife. In rally after rally she says, "I've a

      Medicine's Dirty Little Secret
There's one medical statistic doctors don't much talk about despite its importance. It's called number needed to treat, or NNT. It’s a measure developed in the past 20 years, and it’s one of the best-kept statistical secrets in medicine. The idea of NNT is simple enough. Most clinical trials look at how much better people do on a particular medicine. NNT answers the question: How many people have to take a particular drug to avoid one incidence of a medical issue (such as a heart attack, or recurrence of cancer)? For example, if a drug had an NNT of 50 for heart attacks, then 50 people have to take these drugs in order to prevent one of them from having a heart attack. That doesn’t sound like a lot, so pharmaceutical companies tend to keep the number quiet and focus on broader, U.S.

A Dirty Little Secret about Inject Printers
"Who knew what was going on inside inkjet printers? Yikes. A lot of that ink, which costs three times more per milliliter than a $350 bottle of the finest Cristal champagne, is seeping into a gummy well of useless black slime. What a waste." My dirty little secret.
Physical activity has been lacking around these parts, to say the least. The last thing I've wanted to do after logging much time on the bathroom floor is exercise. The act of pushing a vacuum has caused me, more than once, to grab on to the closest available sturdy structure or piece of furniture to keep from falling over - although, that's due more to starvation and dehydration and the

      Agri-Business’ Dirty Little Secret
Reid reviving ‘amnesty’ for illegals ‘DREAM’ grant of legality to millions on fast track for vote tomorrow “In many ways this bill is worse than Bush-Kennedy because this is blatant deception on the part of the Senate to get a massive amnesty passed,” asserted Steve Elliott, president of Grassfire.org. Some of the provisions of the plan, called DREAM for Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors, include: * Conditional legal status for any illegal alien who claims to have arrived in the U.S. prior to age 16. * Any illegal alien can apply for the program. * Those who gain legal status then can sponsor any family members, allowing additional millions to access the program. * There would be a ban on deportation for anyone who applies. * Illegals would be granted taxpayer-funded in-state tuition rates for college.

      Ipod’s dirty little secret
The ipod as well all know has some amazing features. With its ability to mobilize our music and media files. It can serve up all a digital buffet of music and video, help organize your contacts, and allows you to play games and view the family photos. All great and amazing, but one very important feature that many of us overlook is the ipod’s dirty little secret. I am referring to its ability to double as a mobile filing cabinet. The average ipod has a 20Gb hard drive. If you are like me, I have about half of my ipod filled with music that I actually listen to. Once the honeymoon is over, and you organize your media collection to include what you actually listen to, you can free up some space on the hard drive. iTunes by default manages your ipod and the space on it. Change a few settings in iTunes and you can access those precious Gb’s of unused space. The real benefit is of course the amount of storage you have. In comparison to USB flash drives, they typically offer 4Gb of stora

A dirty little secret about "The Secret"...and "The Secret Behind The Secret."While we like positive thinking here at Interfusion Publishing (as long as it's tied to positive "do-ing")...and there's no doubt that the more one focuses on something and acts upon that focus with positive and emotionally driven belief, the more that thing will tend to manifest in one's life...even so, I'm a bit disturbed by the more cultish aspects of the overly zealous adherents of "the law of attraction." Their demonization of "negative thinking" reminds me of Christian fundamentalists who harp too much on "sin" and label anything they disagree with as "the work of the devil." Any such adherents who are too uptight to take in a little dead-on parody best leave now, or else darkness will overtake them. Those with stronger wills and more resilient critical thinking skills are invited to watch the following video, courtesy of You Tube:"The Secret on Oprah" Parody by Saturday Night LiveA few links, pro a

We’ve all heard the horror stories of people whose hard drives have crashed and lost all the music they had purchased from the iTunes store. It would seem Steve Jobs has truly smiled down upon them and blessed them. All is right with the world, and they have learned the valuable lesson of “always back up your stuff“. Wine's "Dirty Little Secret"
Breathless title, I know. But that is how the distributor of Velcorin jokingly refers to the chemical they sell, so I think I’m safe in being a little sensational. About a week ago I mentioned that after talking with folks at ZAP that I heard about a fairly toxic chemical that winemakers were using to kill microbes (yeast, mold, bacteria) and stabilize wines. It turns out that the chemical has been around and in use, with FDA approval I might add, since 1988. So basically I’m pretty late to the party on this one. Cyril Penn at Wine Business Monthly has even written a piece on new mobile Velcorin dosing services back in July of 2005. In any event, since ZAP I’ve been on the phone with a few folks getting the skinny on dimethyl dicarbonate, the chemical name for Velcorin. It turns out that the trick in using Velcorin is in getting the proper training on the dosing machines that you use to inject the liquid sterilant into wine. The FDA has only approved its use at levels
