The Claremont Diner is located at 6200 Claremont (at College and the 5-point intersection) in Oakland. Although not a Berkeley restaurant, it's right on the border (in Rockridge) and you can often find coupons in the local weekly papers. The phone number is 510-655-5455.It's a typical looking diner inside with a fun little train that circles the restaurant near the ceiling. This large painting (16" x 20") was a commissioned piece I did for a very nice client who will be opening a Diner in a few month. I have been commissioned to paint four paintings for her. This is the first. Once the paintings have been completed I hope to post some pictures from the Diner. The Diner will be located in Bryant, Arkansas (which is located outside of Little Rock). It will serve home cooked meals with a retro atmosphere. Once the Diner is opened I will write more about it...stay tuned.

Now don’t get to thinkin’ this is gonna’ happen every week! Taking photos of my dinner preparation is the rare exception. I just happened to think of picking up the camera when I prepared this last week and I thought it would be fun to torture y’all. I’m no Pioneer Woman when it comes to making my readers hungry. But, here’s my less than authentic version of Chicken Paprikash.  Bear in mind that I’m not Hungarian, but I was born on the Hungarian side of town in Toledo, Ohio and I think of sour cream as a condiment. JULES’ CHICKEN SORTA PAPRIKASH Saute’ the yellow onion in olive oil in a large skillet till it begins to caramelize. Don’t salt it during this time because that will make the onion “sweat” and it won’t caramelize nicely. Be sure to follow the full recipe below. This is my super gynormous Calphalon stainless 5 qt. saute’ pan. Add tons of fresh, sliced mushrooms and a big ol’

ETHEL’S CABBAGE SOUP 1 lb ground beef 1 medium yellow onion, chopped 1 lg green pepper, chopped 1-2 cloves minced garlic 2 qts beef broth 2 cans (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes 2 cans red kidney beans (15 oz) Salt & Pepper to taste 1/4 cup sugar 4 oz tomato paste 3 tbsp worcestershire sauce 1-2 lg heads cabbage, chopped 1 can Original Ro*tel tomatoes In large stock pot, brown ground beef. Add onion, garlic and green pepper, saute’ till tender. Add remaining ingredients in order. Simmer till flavors meld and cabbage is tender. Serve with crusty bread.

I love to grill year ’round and one of my favorites is flank steak with fresh asparagus. This is incredibly easy and very flavorful. Wonderful with a big, tossed salad. JULES’ FLANK STEAK 1 3-4 lb flank steak 1/4 cup Lea & Perrins worcestershire sauce 1/4 cup lemon juice 2 tbsp hot sauce (I prefer Frank’s Red Hot) 2 tsp house seasoning (equal parts kosher salt, black pepper & garlic powder) 1 tbsp honey Mix last five ingredients together in ziplock bag and place flank steak in bag. Seal and let marinate for at least 30 minutes, preferably 1-2 hours. Grill on hot grill 6 minutes per side. Baste fresh asparagus with your favorite salad dressing and grill alongside flank steak. Yum!

It’s summer and summer means peaches! One of my favorite desserts is peach cobbler and my favorite recipe for peach cobbler belonged to my great Aunt Helen. Helen was a tiny Swedish lady who passed away at the age of 96 almost 18 years ago. She was famous in our family for slamming any car door shut with gusto, thus our tradition of saying, “Shut the door, Helen!” whenever a door slams. Not that that has anything at all to do with her cobbler, which is delectable. AUNT HELEN’S PEACH COBBLER Fresh or frozen peaches to fill a 9×9 casserole, sliced 3/4 c sugar 4 tbsp butter (not margarine) 1 tsp baking powder 1/4 tsp salt 1 c flour 1/2 c milk -and- 1 c sugar 2 tbsp corn starch 2/3 c boiling water Slice cold butter into patties. Combine sugar, baking powder, salt and flower in large bowl. Cut butter into dry ingredients as if making a pie crust. It will be crumbly. Add milk and mix well. Batter will be sticky, like brownie batter. Place fruit in bot

“I’d love to make great tasting BBQ,” you say, “But, I don’t have a low-n-slow BBQ pit.” What’s a cook to do? While not “authentic”, this oven version is perfect for the home cook. It delivers wonderful, family-friendly flavor that will keep a hungry crowd coming back for more. This one is mouth-watering. JULES’ RAINY DAY OVEN ROASTED “BBQ” PULLED PORK 1 large pork shoulder (Boston Butt) 8-9lbs 2-3 cup apple juice or cider 1 large yellow onion, sliced 2 tbsp liquid smoke (I only use Colgin® Hickory) 1 bottle BBQ sauce (or my homemade sauce recipe follows) AYE THE RUB: 1/4 cup brown sugar 3-4 tbsp paprika 2 tbsp black pepper 2 tbsp salt 1 tbsp garlic powder Place pork shoulder into large roasting pan. I use the Calphalon 16″ roaster. Mix rub ingredients well in a small bowl. Sprinkle liberally over shoulder. Rub into meat and cover with foil. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight. Preheat ov

Sometimes you just need to empty the pantry and all you’ve really got are odds-n-ends. That’s how I created this recipe. I call it… JULES’ ACCIDENTAL SOUP 1 yellow onion, minced 1 lb ground beef 3-4 cans Swanson chicken broth 1 14oz can Del Monte diced tomatoes with garlic & onion 1 14oz can Sylvia’s mixed greens 1 14oz can great northern beans 1 14oz can sliced mushrooms, drained House seasoning Saute’ the onion in a bit of olive oil in a large stockpot till tender. Add the ground beef and brown thoroughly. Add remaining ingredients and stir till well combined. Bring just to a boil then reduce to low simmer. Allow to simmer for 30 minutes. Serve with crusty bread. The greens add a wonderfully rich and slightly smoky flavor.

This is a quick and easy supper which everyone can fix to suit their own taste. My favorite part is the Pico de Jules. JULES’ BEEF & BLACK BEAN BURRITOS 1 lb ground beef 14 oz can black beans, drained 14 oz can red enchilada sauce 1 cup sharp cheddar, grated Sour cream Pico de Jules’ salsa (recipe here-make ahead) 10″ fresh flour tortillas Brown ground beef in large skillet over medium heat and season with kosher salt to taste. When been is browned add the red enchilada sauce. Increase heat to medium high and reduce sauce, about 10 minutes. Beef should be well coated with sauce, but not soupy. The enchilada sauce provides all the seasoning you’ll need. Warm the black beans in a sauce pan till just warmed. Don’t stir too much or the beans will become mushy. Warm the tortillas in the microwave with damp paper towels. Assemble burritos by spooning approximately 2 tablespoons of beef and 2 tablespoons of beans into center of tortilla. Add cheese,

This painting is very different from many of my other peices. For one thing, it is gigantic compared to many of my current paintings. I felt like getting a little risky and paint a little more freer with a larger canvas. Call me crazy ! This particular painting of a Diner is a stylish view of one of many great American Diners throughout the country.I rarely paint in such large scale but I thought that this type of subject matter required a large platform. I found the painting allowed me to more expressive. I really am not a large canvas painter and still really enjoy the small intimate paintings that I have been doing for 5 years now. I must say that my eyes appreciate the break from the close tight detail paintings. I guess I will occassionally continue to paint larger but I think that the time that is required to paint such a large scale can be costly. Click here to Bid

I'm sure that the former Marissa Cooper has mixed feelings about the show's demise, but would love to party down with everyone at least one more time.Hell, remember in the very beginning of the show when not only were R-Bils and Brody dating in real life but Mischa and Ben MacKenzie (Ryan, obvs) were, too? Dual romance rekindling*? Yes, yes. Love it.
