There is only one trouble with dieting and is that the dieter only wants to follow an eating plan for a while or until the weight is lost or some semblance of 'normality' is restored. Then they return to their old habits, the bad old ways, the way of life which got them into the situation in the first place.
Nowadays, some people suffer from headaches as a result of having bad eating habitats that even painkillers can not finish until the person decide to follow health diets or a plan with advices about nutrition so they will stop gaining weight and the headache gets gone.

This article discusses some of the advantages and disadvantages of both specialist diets and basic healthy eating. I must emphasise that these are my own views and opinions, and I accept that not everyone shares or supports them! I have tried to offer evidence for the statements I have made throughout this article.
When I refer to specialist diets I am generally referring to diets such as the Atkins, Cabbage Soup, Drop a Jean Size, Slim-fast, low carbohydrate diets and low fat diets, to name but a few. But what do all of these diets have in common?

Before I go on, I would like to wish everybody a happy "Break your Diet" day. That's right - as I write this on March 18th, this is the day where the average person who starts a New Years resolution diet breaks it - 78.6 days. Well a newly released survey shows that more people are opting to measure their diets in years, rather than days - at least in the UK.The survey of almost 3300 British adults found that weight loss plans such as; The Maple Syrup, Atkins and Cabbage Soup diets are becoming less widely followed. According to the survey, a third of people are adopting more of a lifelong approach to weight loss. If this is true, this is good news! The problem is that the press release and/or the survey lack some detail that inquiring minds would want to know - such as; by how much
An interesting article from last year about a study that concluded that diets don’t work. You can read the whole thing here. Here are some things that stood out for me: "You can initially lose 5 to 10 percent of your weight on any number of diets, but then the weight comes back," said Traci Mann, UCLA associate professor of psychology and lead author of the study. "We found that the majority of people regained all the weight, plus more. Sustained weight loss was found only in a small minority of participants, while complete weight regain was found in the majority. Diets do not lead to sustained weight loss or health benefits for the majority of people.""What happens to people on diets in the long run?" Mann asked. "Would they have been better off to not go on a diet at all? We decided to

A high protein diet can aid weight loss although for reasons not previously foreseen by many dieters. It is believed that a high protein diet, low in carbohydrates helps burn more calories when the body converted protein to glucose, a process known as gluconeogenesis. In fact evidence suggests that the amount of extra energy used for this process is insignificant. Many of us think that the best way to fill our stomachs is with a large amount of carbs. But is this the best way to keep us from snacking throughout the day?BBC food decided to find out. It's long been thought that a low-fat diet is essential for heart health and cancer prevention. But this notion has been recently tested, with surprising results.A government-funded study — published in the February 2006 issue of JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association — showed that a low-fat diet didn't lower the risk of some cancers or heart disease for older women. This study, which followed almost 49,000 postmenopausal women over eight years, included two groups: One group of women was advised to eat less than 20 percent of their calories from fat and to eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains; another group of women continued their usual eating habits. At the end of the study, researchers found no difference in the rate of breast cancer, colorectal cancer or car

If you want to lose weight, the word diet should be banned from your dictionary. Most diets focus on weight loss rather than fat loss. Losing weight more rapidly means losing muscle tissue which is body's major fat burning component. Diets are temporary and lifestyle change is important for successful weight loss. When you reach your target weight, you return to your normal eating habits so the weight usually comes back. Change the way you eat and CHANGE THE WAY YOU THINK. Don't ever say "I am dieting" because most diets fail. Diets don't work long term. On most of the diets, you are not eating stuff you will be eating for the rest of your life. You might lose a few pounds but once your diet is over, then you will most likely regain all of your weight again and chances are they'll bring a

The initial reaction of most people who discover that they have some weight is less food to eat. It sounds simple and reasonable. Since food is what got us into trouble follows that eating less will be all right again. Almost any diet or eating plan in the magazines or on the Internet says virtually the same: eat less food. Therefore, the answer to this problem is very simple and convenient. Sure, with less food than usual is a challenge, but also a kind of feeling fine.Unfortunately for those who hope that the reduction in food intake would help them lose, it will not work. Over the thousands of years of evolution of the human body had to do with the starvation many times and had to find ways of surviving. We are the offsprings of those who managed to survive periods of starvation by deal

If you have spent any time surfing the Net or reading magazines, the chances are you will have seen the next 'miracle' diet for arthritis. Some suggest we should take certain supplements. Others that we should avoid certain foods. So is there any evidence that any of these diets actually work? Most doctors that work in the field will tell you that diet can indeed help in controlling symptoms of your arthritis. But not the faddy diets that are often extolled in the popular press. The general consensus is that you should be following a sensible diet that is high in fresh fruit and vegetables and low in saturated fats. This will give the body all the nutrients it needs, and can help to reduce weight when combined with a sensible exercise plan. One thing is probably worth pointing out here. Th

That twist is really eating somewhere between 500-1200 calories per day which if you're eating that low, you're going to lose weight. Is it a healthy way to lose weight, I'd say not. The biggie though was the scam scandal as "Kimmer" turned out to be not what she said she was. Kimmer claimed to have lost 198 lbs in 6 months on her diet creation and stayed at her new weight when really she had gained all the weight back but didn't tell anyone until she got "caught on film." Low-carb / High-protein Diets by Eric SchmidtSome of the more popular diets out there today come in the form of low-carb. There are multiple approaches to why they say this works, from the idea that it’s easier to gain weight from carbohydrate calories than from protein and fat calories to the idea that eating fewer carbs will promote weight loss due to the fact that unbalancing your diet will cause an increase in your metabolism. Your body doesn’t need carbohydrates for fuel, it can survive solely on protein and fat if necessary, but your brain can’t, the brain requires carbohydrates, it has no way of using protein or fat energy, which is enough reason for many people to avoid low-carb diets. Low-carbohydrate diets also promote ketosis, when weight loss occurs, fats and proteins are

By: Robert Baird In case of attaining weight loss with fruitful results, it is advisable to indulge in a healthy diet. One of the most effective means of losing weight is by means of dieting. However it is to be borne in mind before indulging in a diet program that one must take suitable advice from an expert or a medical practitioner as all diet types may not suit the body type of an individual. Moreover, it is also necessary to remember that some of these diets may have harmful effects and thus proper research is advised. The term "weight loss diet' is often considered synonymous with the "Fad Diet'. These fad diets are extremely low in calories and they certify the consumption of certain selected liquid foods which have almost zero nutritional content. Some of the prominent fad diet foods include grapefruit diet and cabbage soup diets. It is to be noted here that researchers have dubbed this fad diet as extremely unhealthy and injurious to health as in the illusion of causing w
By: Adam During pregnancy and breastfeeding your body works hard and needs more vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. In addition to fueling your own body and providing for the needs of your growing baby, the increased tissue of the uterus, placenta and blood requires more calories, vitamins, minerals and protein. Most doctors emphasize on getting enough calories through your pregnancy diet - which is why even if you are overweight, you've got to have pregnancy weight gain; if not, your own body fat will be used to support the pregnancy. Your body produces ketones and if this happens, it is harmful for your baby.Unlike your carefree days when you wolf down a grease-filled burger and fries from the local diner, or when you could drink your friends under the table, you now have to think about yourself in a responsible manner. To that end your diet during pregnancy needs to be a healthy one. You need to think about what is best for not only you, but also for your baby. Drinking is out,

I stopped going to the gym. I started traveling all over the country and eating all sorts of rich food. So I ended up putting the weight back on. Low Carb Diets by: Jason Hulott1 One of the most well known of the low carb diets is the Atkins diet; however there are a large amount of diets which are based on low carbohydrates with just a few minor changes in them. The low carb diet is based on the premise that if the diet doesn’t include many carbohydrates in it, then the body will produce less insulin resulting in the body using its fat and protein stores as its main source of energy, which then results in weight loss. The body has to lose body fat in order to lose weight successfully and by keeping the amount of carbs to a minimum, the body will turn to using fat as the main source of energy while encouraging the body to produce ketone bodies to give energy to parts of the body such as the brain. The low carb diet involves the pe
Cholesterol is produced in our liver. This is waxy, fatty substances that aids in strengthening cell walls, forming nerve sheaths, and producing hormones. However, excessive production of cholesterol is harmful to our body and eventually it is apparently fatal in most of the cases, because it heightens the risk of heart diseases and strokes. A healthy diet is known to reduce the risk of raising high blood cholesterol. So, you should always take a great care of your regular diet. If you have a high cholesterol level, you should go through strict healthy diet to lower cholesterol along with medication. Research shows that a controlled diet increases the possibility to lower cholesterol level to a great extent. But it is not mandatory that if you follow a strict diet to lower cholesterol leve
Most of the complications of diabetes are associated with high levels of blood glucose caused by faulty processing of carbohydrates and sugars. It is logical to assume that reducing carbohydrates in the diet would be helpful in controlling this disorder, and many people with diabetes find that this is the case.
However, the standard recommendations for diabetics from the American Diabetes Association include a diet that is relatively high in carbohydrates.
Each year, the ADA publishes new dietary guidelines for diabetes. The 2008 version, due to come out in January, is likely to acknowledge the importance of controlling carbohydrate intake. The ADA has for many years been reluctant to recommend significant carbohydrate restriction because of concerns that such a diet is too difficult to follow, or that increasing fat and protein intake could cause other health problems.Sources:About.com November 19, 2007

Fat is the most calorie-dense food group: each gram has nine calories, compared to four calories for carbohydrate and protein. So if the aim is to create a calorie deficit in your diet, then cutting down on high-fat foods is a good place to start.
Reducing fat intake
Healthy eating guidelines recommend that a maximum of 30 per cent of calories in the diet should come from fat; a low-fat diet for weight loss will typically reduce this to around 20 per cent. However, as usual, the total energy intake is what counts on a low-fat diet just by replacing fatty foods with high-sugar, high-calorie foods, so it is important to keep an eye on the overall balance of the diet, too.
What you can eat
As we have seen, some fats are essential for good health while an excess of others can be harmful. The fats in a low-fat diet should primarily be ‘good’ monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fats, such as those that are found in olive oil or oily fish, for example. Saturated fats, which are found

By: jm To diet, as the joke goes, means to die with a 'T'. Such is the case of the vain who go on crash diets just because they think they're too fat; that their clothes no longer fit; or because their love handles are too big, even if in truth they are not fat at all. Diet is often equated with nutrition. The dictionary defines it as the act of restricting food intake or at least intake of particular food. Diet as a collective is the amount of food a person eats or drinks during the course of a day. People do it for health reasons, some to simply lose weight, and some altogether for all the wrong reasons. The body needs calories for heat. A calorie is a unit of measurement for energy. The unit's name is French and derives from the Latin calor (heat). Although the new unit of energy is joule, calorie remains as the unit of measurement for energy obtained from food. A crash diet is a diet which is extreme in its deprivations - typically restricting calorie intake abruptly. Meant to a
These reduce energy intake by replacing one or two meals a days with low-calorie but nutritionally balanced substitue, such as a milkshake, cereal bar, soup or ready meal. The ‘normal’ meals eaten follow calorie guidelines and healthy eating principles.

Meal replacement diets can be bought from supermarkets and usually come with information packs including recipes, meal plans, exercise and motivational tips to help people stick to the plan. Some meal replacement products are used in very low-calorie diets (VLCDs), which should be followed for a short time with medical approval and under supervision.
VLCDs(starting with a calories allowance of around 500 a day) may be recommended for people who have a severe weight problem, with associated health risks, and who have had difficulty losing weight in more conventional ways. Evidence on VLCDs sugguests that while inital rapid weight loss is quicker than with other methods, the long-term results are similar to

Popular diets (sometimes pejoratively called "fad diets") usually derive their popularity from the personalities of their proponents. These proponents include "diet gurus" and celebrity converts. "Diet books" are the primary means of communicating the specifics of popular diets. Most popular diets experience short-lived popularity, partly because new diet books are continuously being published.Judging the effectiveness (and nutritional merit) of popular diets can be especially difficult. Diet proponents often locate medical professionals to back up their work. Some diets are so controversial that they divide the medical community. Many popular diets advocate the combination of a specific technique (such as eliminating a certain food, or eating only certain combinations of foods) with reduced caloric intake, with the goal being to accelerate weight loss. Others ignore traditional science altogether.LOW FAT DIETSLow-fat diets were popular during the 1980s and 1990s, encouraging people to e

By the time clients enter eating disorder treatment, they are out of control with food. They can write books about nutrition, diets, how they should eat and how they should not. They know the calories and carbohydrates in almost every food. The problem is they just cannot put that knowledge into practice. They are locked into an uncontrollable cycle with food where obsessive thoughts about weight, body image, diets, and food consume their lives.
A reputable eating disorder treatment program connects people back to an internal form of control, making it possible to eat when hungry, make healthy food choices, and stop eating when full. People learn to identify the thoughts, feelings, and situations that trigger using food or thinking excessively about food. At some point in the eating disorder program patients learn to substitute healthy methods of caring for themselves.
An eating disorder treatment program should be a structured program based on cognitive-behavioral theory, solution-fo

Why are diets so destructive to our weight and health? Here are some of the reasons.
1. Severe food restriction causes real [...]
Contrary to expectations, diets high in the nutrient choline were associated with an increased risk of some colorectal polyps, which can–but do not always–lead to colorectal cancer, according to a study published online in the August 7 Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
Major food sources of choline include red meat, eggs, poultry, and dairy products. Choline is involved in a biochemical process known as one-carbon metabolism. Studies have shown that people with increased intake of other nutrients required for one-carbon metabolism, such as folate, are at a decreased risk for colorectal polyps. This is the first study to examine the association between choline and colorectal polyps.
Eunyoung Cho, Sc.D., of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and colleagues sent food-frequency questionnaires to women enrolled in the Nurses’ Health Study every two to four years from 1984 to 2002. They then estimated the choline content in their diets.
The researchers had

My Dad is going out tonight to see one of his friends who is always making a big lifestyle change. Mostly this means yo yo dieting, and this guy has tried all the major weight loss supplements like
hydroxycut. They usually help him lose weight, but then he goes back to all his old eating habits and then a couple of months later he finds another diet. Whey can't people just eat everything they
Diet and Weight LossThere are various diet programs and plans in the media that we hear all the time such as Atkins diet, South Beach Diet, Zone Diet, Cabbage Diet and more. However, it is important to look to see how much nutrients each diet program provides while helping to lose weight or maintain good weight loss. According to a study by Aberdeen's Rowett Research Institute, low-carb diets may increase the risk of bowel cancer. They state there appears to be a link between eating less carbohydrates and reducing a cancer-fighting bacteria. They found that low-carb regimes could cause a four-fold reduction in this healthy bacteria, and warn against maintaining a low-carb diet over time. What this report fails to address is the difference between carbs. They state there's no long term benefit from cutting down on fruits, or fibre, such as breads. Contrary to these findings, most people DO benefit from cutting out grain-carbs, whereas many actually need a high-carb diet--mainly in the form of vegetables. In reality, the one-size-fits-all just doesn't work. You need to determine whether your body burns carbohydrates effectively or not, and following the diet that works for your nutritional type. If you're a protein type, staying on a low-carb diet is far less likely to cause you ill

Can high-fiber diets really do all they claim to do? Studies have looked at the relationship between high-fiber diets and many diseases, including colon cancer, coronary heart disease and diabetes.Proven benefits of a high-fiber diet include prevention and treatment of constipation, hemorrhoids and diverticulosis. In addition, certain types of fiber help decrease blood cholesterol levels.Dietary fiber comes from the portion of plants that is not digested by enzymes in the intestinal tract. Part of it, however, may be metabolized by bacteria in the lower gut. Different types of plants have varying amounts and kinds of fiber, including pectin, gum, mucilage, cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin.Pectin and gum are water-soluble fibers found inside plant cells. They slow the passage of food through the intestines but do nothing to increase fecal bulk. Beans, oat bran, fruit and vegetables contain soluble fiber. In contrast, fibers in cell walls are water insoluble. These include cellulose, h
Yesterday a regular customer came into the shop accompanied by her lovely Norfolk terrier. We (staff, owner and dog) all had a bit of a chat and then dog and owner went on their way. After she had gone I remarked to one of our staff members that the little dog had put on a bit of weight. We thought this was because the dog was getting a little older and and maybe not quite as active as she had been. Also she had had a recent hair cut which made her look a little 'plumper'. 'Perhaps she needed a week or two on a diet?' - I said.Little did I know that there were two other female customers in the shop while I was saying this. They had overheard our entire conversation regarding weights and diets, and put two and two together. The Ladies had not heard us referring to the dog, and thought we were talking about them! We hastily explained that we were talking about the previous customers dog, but I am sure they did not believe us. Next time I will keep my mouth firmly shut and my thought
Having the ideal diet means not exceeding the appropriate weight for your height and build. How important is it to have the ideal weight? You cannot even begin to imagine that. Let’s just say that a lot of health hazards are related to obesity, and this condition is unfortunately way too frequent all over the world. If only we could solve this question, the world (for many) would be a better place! Well, the reality is that there are real answers to this question that will apply to many people. It will take a good dose of reality and a brave heart to stop denying what really happens. Read on to discover some answers that may change your life forever and give you the impetus to lose weight and keep it off!Justification?Being overweight can be used as an excuse for being unhappy, especially when you do not do anything to help yourself. Subconsciously, over-eating is a comfort for many people and this then allows them to hide behind their weight problem and helps them to justify rejection and avoid being hurt. They can then shift the blame of rejection on their weight-problem, without addressing other aspects of their fears. Sometimes it seems easier to hide behind your “weight problem”, than address other matters where you may have a greater fear of failure.Eating Without Thinking? If you are con
Amongst health expects, crash diets are seen as a bad idea for most people as:
They encourage loss of more lean tissue (muscle) than diets which produce a slower weight loss on a higher calorie level.
They may be lacking in nutrients - both macro nutrients such as fat, protein or carbohydrate, and micro nutrients such as vitamins and minerals
They don’t encourage sensible eating habits and this means that after the crash diet is over weight is easily regained. In time, this can turn into a ‘yo-yo’ dieting habit, which is demoralizing.
A typical meal replacement plan or liquid diet involves substituting a number of meals and snacks with a nutritionally balanced shake made from sugar, skimmed milk powder, fiber, vitamins, minerals and sweetener. Some plans offer candy-like bars as an alternative.WHAT YOU EAT AND DRINK:Typically, you replace two meals and one snack per day with one shake. Each shake contains about 200 calories. Your third meal is a nutrient-rich meal of about 600 calories. Thus your total daily intake adds up to about 1200 calories.ADVANTAGES:The diet is nutritionally balanced and very convenient. All you have to do is open a can, grab a glass, and add milk. In addition to being very sweet, these shakes/bars are good news for anyone with a sweet tooth. The liquid diet benefits certain types of procedures, both pre- and post-op. In pre-operative cases, a clear liquid diet flushes the bowels while decreasing strain on the digestive system. Before beginning this type of liquid diet, a physician will provi

Fad diets are weight loss plans that promise amazingly fast results. They do not offer any sort of long-term plan for success and they are usually very unhealthy, sometimes actually dangerous, for your body. Some of the more popular fad diets are listed below:LIQUID DIETS: You drink a nutrient-rich liquid twice a day in place of your regular meals and eat a well-balanced meal as the third meal of the day.LOW FAT HIGH CARB DIET: This diet severely limits the fat in your diet and encourages the intake of carbohydrates.DIET PILLS AND SUPPLEMENTS: Diet pills and/or supplements are supposed to decrease your appetite, resulting in weight loss.FOOD RESTRICTIVE DIETS: There are many of these types of diets that require you to severely restrict your calorie intake.Unfortunately, the claims of fad diets prey on people who are usually so desperate to lose weight, they will try anything. Most people would rather try a quick fix instead of making the effort to lose weight with healthy long-term chan
I was just reading this article from New Zealand, this post isn't about the topic per se, so if your concerned, Regina covered it nicely here. What this post is about however is a couple of quotes in the article that were so moronic they made me laugh so I thought I'd share :)Heres the first one which I think is a real gem:Dietetic Association president Jan Milne said people who cut carbohydrates out of their diets missed out on an important source of nutrients, including B vitamins and iron."If a parent goes on a low-carb diet, the rest of the family sometimes ends up on it by default,"she said."This is particularly dangerous for children, who typically get a lot of their iron from bread." Now I am sure I do not need to explain the stupidity of that comment, I mean if anything it is the other way around...Heres another, just as stupid:Mrs Milne said many foods marketed as "low carb" or "low fat" actually contained large amounts of sugar, which was "incredibly dishonest".Low fat
The answer to this question is very simple: NO! Low fat diets are very bad for an individual's general well-being, not to mention his health. This is because healthy fat is very important in keeping your skin looking good, lubricated joints and a key factor in hormone production. If you want to eliminate something from your diet you need to start with sugar and not fat! By doing this you will actually get your glucoze level to be in a healthy range and this induces fat loss. Just do this! Eliminate sugar all together from your diet for a week or two and keep on doing what you do! You will see something change! If you chose to go for a low fat diet your testosterone level will drop together with progesterone production. In case you did not know, both are important for men and women in order to loose weight. It's simple, if you do not have enough fat in your diet you won't have enough levels of testosterone to aid you in loosing weight because you can not develop muscle. Building muscl

By Mark Idzik Any doctor worth their salt will tell you diets don't work. Plain and simple. Surprised? Well you might be. You can't get away from all the talk about South Beach, Atkins, Low Carb, Zone ... you name it, they're talking about it. It's on TV, in magazines... everywhere you look. And of course there are the pills, drugs and other expensive methods to lose weight. While they may be appropriate in certain cases, by and large they aren't necessary. Some can actually be dangerous to your health. What does work, what's been proven to work time and time again is something very simple... a lifestyle change. You may not want to hear it, but it's true. You can't eat thousands of calories, rich desserts, sugary snacks, excess fat and tons of carbs, get little or no activity and expect to lose weight with a pill! You'll be surprised to know that you don't need to stop eating or have to exercise for hours every day to lose weight. Just a few simple lifestyle changes add
