Jose Guillen and starting pitcher Gil Meche had an RBI and a run scored apiece for Kansas City, which has won three of its last four games. Game 64 Recap--Pirates 5 Diamondbacks 3
Yes, the Pirates played again today. And...... ----Where to start with this one?Zach Duke was his usual reliable self--incredible turnaround, huh? 6 innings, 2 runs and a win to move to 4-4, and the ERA is at 4.10.---A Mark Reynolds home run that was overturned (into a double--fan interference--I didn't see the play since the game wasn't on TV) brought up early tension, and D-Backs manager Bob Me

A perplexing night for Ian Snell tonight. If you didn't see the game, his numbers look good-5 innings and 2 runs, with 9 K's. He was effective, but only when he put the ball over the plate. Playoff Reflections, Day Fifteen: My trip to the Hub of Red Sox Nation, Rockies/Diamondbacks
Take a look at my playoff gallery here --- Red Sox vs. Indians - ALCS, Game Two....Greetings everyone! It’s so good to be back home in Maryland. Anyhow, I was up in Boston on Saturday to partake in the whole playoff experience as I caught Game Two of the American League Championship series as the Cleveland Indians took on the Boston Red Sox.I decided to hop on a quick flight on Airtran from Baltimore-Washington International to Boston, since I really didn’t want to deal with traffic driving through the Northeast and I kind of wanted to be home on Sunday. That was the smartest decision I could have ever made. I was in Boston in an hour, and on the trip, I met some wonderful people who came to the Washington area to house-hunt and we talked about baseball, life in Washington, and our jobs.As I got off the plane and was about to head to train station en route to Fenway, the very same people whom I chatted with on the plane gave me a ride to the Green Line so I could see the game.I gre

Playoff Reflections, Day Ten; Diamondbacks vs. Rockies, Red Sox vs. Indians...
Well, good morning to everyone. It looks like fall has finally arrived in this part of the world, as it is now freezing out. I’m happy that it doesn’t feel like Miami out anymore; however, the change from summer to fall happened way too quickly. Anyhow, the two teams no one would ever be in the NLCS, the Diamondbacks and the Rockies, played last night in the desert. Colorado continued its onslaught and defeated the Diamondbacks, 5-1. Basically, in case you have may not noticed, the Rockies only have lost one game within the last month. They jumped on Diamondbacks ace, Brandon Webb and they did it not with the long ball, but with singles, putting the ball in play and simple execution. Long story short, the Rockies put on a clinic on how to play winning baseball last night. The Diamondbacks had their chances, but didn’t make the most of it and the play that was indicative of that came in the seventh inning when Justin Upton tried to break up the double play slid

      Should the Diamondbacks Lose?
In discussing potential NL scenarios over at Something Awful, I just realized that the Diamondbacks have an incentive to lose to Colorado today. Let me explain.First of all, the Diamondbacks have clinched both the NL West (they hold the tiebreaker over SD) and home field throughout the NL playoffs. So they wouldn't be hurt by a loss tomorrow. Here's where it gets interesting. The Diamondbacks are playing the Rockies, who need to win to stay alive. If Colorado wins, there is the potential for a three-way or four-way tie, which would necessitate two or three games to resolve. This would be extremely advantageous to Arizona, since they would end up playing a team on Wednesday (or possibly Thursday, in the four-way tie scenario) that had just been through an intense "mini-tournament", likely using their best starters (Peavy would go for the Padres on Monday). Arizona's opponent's bullpen would also likely be pretty worn out.I'm not saying they should lose- that would be unfair to

Friday Game Thread; Cubs at Diamondbacks; 8:40 p.m. CT
By now, you've probably read all around the Cubby Blogosphere how the team does bad in Arizona, how they haven't won since April 4, 2005 (also coincidentally the birthday of yours truly), blah, blah, blah. To which I say: F that noise. Call it tempting fate or whatever, but I'm pretty sure the Cubs will be winning at least one of these games, especially without having to face Brandon Webb. Cubs don't fear Snakes; they maul them! On a related note, may I present to you two more reasons why snakes will always succumb to good. First up is the Globo Gym Purple Cobras, led by White Goodman. They come in, trying to act all bad-ass, and what happens? Average Joe's wins. And with Matt Murton, Daryle Ward, Jason Kendall and Jacque Jones, it doesn't get more average than that. Second, another enemy: Cobra Commander. This sack of crap thinks he can steal the Cubs' colors, try to defeat G.I. Joe and take over the world? Please. Much like Tony La Russa, his tactics never work, and CC h

Saturday Game Thread; Diamondbacks at Cubs; 12:05 pm CT
It's sparkles and me, waiting for you to wish us a happy birthday. Now that we've got that out of the way, on to today's matchup. Our on-fire Cubs will attempt to make boots out of those not-so-pesky-lately Diamondbacks. On the mound for the snakes is 6'5", 220 pound, Micah Owings, a 24 year old rookie right-hander.  He was ranked on minorleagueball.com as the D'Backs 6th best prospect entering the season. Young Mr. Owings had a decent first three months of the season; at the end of June, his record stood at 5-2 with a 3.79 ERA in 71.1 innings. Since July 1, however, things haven't been going swimmingly.  He's made three starts, pitching a total of 14.2 innings, surrendering 21 hits and 13 runs in that span, resulting in a subsequent rise in the ERA to 4.92 (1.48 WHIP) and a record of 5-5.  His success on the road has been even less impressive, with a record of 2-3, 7.46 ERA, 1.71 WHIP and .303 BAA.  Let's hope he can match this production. Friday Game Thread; Diamondbacks at Cubs; 1:20 p.m. CT
With players getting hurt left and right and Derrek Lee still serving a suspension, the Cubs enter a three-game set with the Diamondbacks with a short bench and no time to heal these injuries, as the Brewers have shown they're not giving away the Central lead without a strong fight. Pitching for Arizona today is Brandon Webb, and um, he's kind of good. The reigning N.L. Cy Young Award winner is one of the best in the majors, and double-digit strikeout games are more common than not for Webb. This season he's been so-so (including an average of four runs given up in his last three starts), and is 8-7 overall with a 3.42 ERA. Still the Cubs will have to fight tooth and nail if Webb is on his game today. For the Cubs, it's Jason Marquis, who could use a good outing. So far, he hasn't shown anything to refute the notion about his yearly second-half implosion. In his last outing, he gave up six runs for the second straight start, but managed to get off the hook thanks to the good wa

      Perfection, Thy Name is Diamondbacks
The normally reliable Dayn Perry has betrayed our trust with his latest offering, a FOX Sports article which fails to fulfill its stated goal. The article promises to tell us what every contending team needs at the deadline, but instead, only delivers the goods for 11 out of the 16 contenders.Dayn didn't simply forget to cover 5 teams. Instead, he asserted that 5 teams simply don't need anything. That's right. They are perfect. Who are these lucky teams, you wonder? None other than the Diamondbacks, Red Sox, Cubs, Dodgers, and Brewers. So rejoice, fans of these teams; you were just imagining those nagging little (or not-so-little) problems that you thought existed on your hometown nine (or twenty-five). Your team is so good that it cannot improve in any way. This is the case, despite the fact that two of the teams (Diamondbacks and Cubs) are not even sniffing 1st place in their own division; the Dodgers have a 1-game lead. The Diamondbacks are 49-46, and they haven't even been unluc

Looking at the Diamondbacks' Young Players
Going into my high stakes league auction I was enamored, as were many others, at the potential of the Arizona young players. I traded a $13 Ervin Santana for a $7 Stephen Drew, I kept a $7 Carlos Quentin, traded a $4 Reed Johnson for Jose Valverde, auctioned Miguel Montero for $5, Edgar Gonzalez for $2 and Juan Cruz for $1. After my auction I "invested" in a Diamondbacks hat, and have watched a good portion of their games on Extra Innings. Have they rewarded my faith?? In a word, no. Here is how they all look so far:1. Stephen Drew--I talked about him in a prior post, namely that he was overrated, most likely, based on his actual performance. I took a chance on him, and figured that I would be able to dump him if he didn't pan out. But going into the auction I must admit that I was swayed off of my opinion by all the stuff I read (so much for the "independence" prong of expertise). To date, he still hasn't improved much, if at all, since my trade. He is at .240/.302/.346. At least th

Can the Snakes Rattle the National League: Arizona Diamondbacks 2007 Season Preview...
In 2006, the Diamondbacks were seen to be a team on the rise mainly due to its young talent and potential, as the team started off hot, but faded in the second half. With the steroid issue hitting close to home with the implication of Jason Grimsley and his legal woes, the team after the revelation suffered.Although the team had a season that has many ups and downs, they have a great, talented core and should be primed to make an impact in the National League West. With the addition of an old friend, Randy Johnson, the Diamondbacks have the potential to be players in the National League pennant race. For the Diamondbacks, the starting rotation has the potential to be in the top echelon of the National League, as they have an ace in the making, a legendary fireballer, a crafty veteran, and a bunch of arms ready to make an impact. At the top of the rotation will be ace pitcher, Brandon Webb.
