There are many reasons why cities are abandoned; some, like the ghost towns of the American West, have become tourist destinations while others have been condemned or simply forgotten. These abandoned cities of the world share an eerie, haunted quality that is part of what makes them so fascinating. The Kowloon Walled City was located just outside Hong Kong, China during British rule. Deserted islands in the Pacific... Rings a romantic bell? Well, think again. A new short story describes our first night on a forgotten Pacific island. An snapshot:Clipperton, a deserted island in the Pacific, one thousand miles off the coast of Mexico. We traveled for weeks to reach this forgotten piece of land. I don’t see much of it, in the darkness. The ground is covered with a thick layer of grinded light coloured coral. I can see the shades of the palm trees a few hundred meters from where we pitched our tent. I can see a few stars in the moist sky. Clouds are passing by regularly. In a distance, I hear the waves braking. This scenery could have been from anywhere. Somewhere in Africa, the Caribbean, or Mediterranean. But this is much more exotic. This is the Pacific. We are the first people to set foot on this islands since months. Years probably. And that makes it special, exotic, exciting. A deserted island called Clipperton. (Full story)
“Nights on Deserted Islands.Lesson #1: Don’t walk between the trees”Around midnight, I give up. I can not sleep. The cod I lay on is too hard. I don’t have any cover, and there is no space anymore in the tent. Half of us sleep under the sky. Seems romantic, sleeping under the open sky on a Pacific island, but the combination of the wind with my wet T-shirt and shorts, make it too cold to have romantic thoughts. And above, all adrenaline pumps in my veins.Clipperton, a deserted island in the Pacific, one thousand miles off the coast of Mexico. Here comes a big confession from me; one of my biggest fears is being completely alone. I’m not talking about not being in a relationship, or in an empty house, I’m talking about being the last person on earth type of alone. Luckily I’m pretty sure that I’ll never have to worry about that, so let’s talk about the more practical type of alone. Just you and your thoughts, for an extended period of time.
Solitude can be a scary place for many individuals, and I think this stems from a lack of knowledge about how to best handle these situations. As with all of our time, we want solitude to be as pleasant and productive as possible. For this we need we need to have a system in place. If we don’t know how to use this time properly, there’s a good chance that we’ll either get bored, or have anxiety about being alone. This could potentially lead us into counter-productive activities, or attract us towards
How can one possibly decide which novels he’d take with him to a deserted island? On the one hand, there’s all the great novels I’ve read that I want to reread. On the other hand, there’s all the great novels (or so someone has told me they’re great) that I have yet to read. What’s a guy to do?Yes, that’s right – make two lists. But first, let me say one thing. When choosing novels, the criteria is fundamentally different from when you’re choosing nonfiction. With nonfiction, I was looking for those books that would never cease to engage me intellectually. Sure, I’d much rather be reading Chesterton than Plato, but Chesterton would get old. Fast. Plato would only get better. With fiction, however, I’m not sure the requirement is primarily intellectual. Rather, it’s joy. Which stories have given me the most delight, the most fun, the most joy? This is the requirement for fiction, I think, because a novel or story that works for me won’t work for Woodward, and v
The book is packed away, but if I recall correctly, in How to Read a Book Mortimer Adler suggested that if one were to take seriously the exercise of deciding which books one would take to a deserted island, one would discover which books were most important to them. So at the risk of sounding complete pretentious, I give you my list.1. Plato: Complete Works.2. The Basic Works of Aristotle.3. The Confessions by Saint Augustine of Hippo.4. The City of God by Saint Augustine of Hippo.5. Summa Contra Gentiles by Saint Thomas Aquinas.6. Summa Theologiae by Saint Thomas Aquinas.7. The History of the English Speaking Peoples by Winston Churchill.8. Art: A New History by Paul Johnson9. Science: A History by John Gribbin.10. Asimov's New Guide to Science by Isaac Asimov. Why these? It's simple, really. The first six -- from Plato to St. Thomas -- cover, in my opinion, all of the worldly and divine wisdom, the whole of philosophy and theology, that one could ever wish to know. The next three
I feel deserted. I feel frustrated. I feel lonesome.
She's thousand miles away from me, and I can't do anything about it. I'm in such a state of failure.
Life is never fair, the angels I need are never there. Destiny is inevitable...
I was riding in a helicopter with several other guys. It appeared that we were some kind of nature film crew. The helicopter caught fire and we crash landed in a small lagoon in front of a small island; think Gilligan’s Island.
We all appeared to be uninjured and we quickly started unloading as much critical equipment as we could before the helicopter sank beneath the water. There were camera’s, tripods, camping supplies, and all manner of other gadgets. We headed toward the beach to set up camp.
Then this dream fast forwarded. It seemed that we had been trapped on this island for awhile. Judging by the beards and the way the crew seemed to have adapted to the living style, I would guess it was about six months. Even though I didn’t dream it, I somehow knew that during our stay at this island, we had filmed proof of something extraordinary. It was something that we desperately needed to share with the rest of humanity in order to humankind to survive. I’m unsu

There's an interesting article in WIRED (issue 15.08) about how millions are wasted on advertising in Second Life. Well, it's not the first time that hype and the "need to be there before the others" shut down any common sense in marketers. Here's an excerpt from the article:For months, Michael Donnelly had been hearing all about the fantastic opportunities in Second Life.As worldwide head of interactive marketing at Coca-Cola, Donnelly was fascinated by its commercial potential, the way its users could wander through a computer-generated 3-D environment that mimics the mundane world of the flesh. So one day last fall, he downloaded the Second Life software, created an avatar, and set off in search of other brands like his own. American Apparel, Reebok, Scion — the big ones were easy to find, yet something felt wrong: "There was nobody else around." He teleported over to the Aloft Hotel, a virtual prototype for a real-world chain being developed by the owners of the W. It was deser
I was reading my sisters english homework, in which she had to write descriptive piece, i loved it and so have pasted it up here……
The sea was calm.
There was no ship in sight, and the seagulls were motionless upon its even greyness.
The sky was dark with lowering clouds, but there was no wind.
The line of the horizon was clear and fragile.
The gritted beach, no less deserted, was thick with tangled seaweed, and the infinite shells crushed under the feet that trod them.
The break-waters, which sought to prevent the continous violation of the waves were rotten with age & green with the sea-slime.
It was a deserted scene but there was restfulness in its melancholy ;
and the great silence, the sophisticated dullness of colour, might have given peace to a heart that was troubled.
