Once upon a time, there was a man. He didn’t have much of a conscience. (In another life, he was the literal Devil.) What he did have was money and a son. He never showed much love for either, though he kept both close. They were important, but they were still tools. The money didn’t mind. The son…not so much.
This is a really fascinating article and video... In my opinion this article is a must read.
This is something I have been feeling personally happening in my life -- but never have been able to understand the sulking internal feeling. I feel especially attached to the part he mentioned about our global instant media... This segment of the article rings so amazingly true in my ears...
Why
Apparently Lifetime Television For Women wanted to dabble in the realm of horror films. OK not really, but for a full hour I was waiting for Tori Spelling or Jane Seymour to crawl out of the cave and talk about women's disease and how men keep them down. The beginning cabin scene was way too lesbianic for my taste. After watching an HOUR of women grunting and crying in a cave, they finally bring out the cave monsters and things get interesting. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the scariness of the Morlock-like creatures ripping the girls apart. I had mixed up the monsters from the movie The Cave (released shortly after Descent) and was worried the film would be too sci-fi with winged dragon-esque creatures. Fortunately I was wrong. There were multiple times I literally jumped in

Susan JacobyA couple of months ago Robert Spencer, the showman behind Jihad Watch, visited my website after I had the poor judgment to write a comment to him about some of his anti-Muslim nonsense. I have since forgotten my complaint or exactly what post he wrote, but the responses from Spencer and his followers were instant and a bit overwhelming. Their responses were not to my point but that I was a Muslim “apologist” or that I should change my blog name to “13 Murders” and that I must be a “dhimmi” fifth columnist supporting efforts to establish a Caliphate in the United States through jihad. I wasn't surprised with any of this, but what I found truly disappointing was Spencer's email to me that he read my blog for the “first and last” time. In other words, my opposing

It's Evolution Sunday! Today marks the third such observance, commemorated on the closest Sunday to Charles Darwin's birthday (February 12). If you'd like to join in the worship, you can find a participating church, synagogue, or spirituality center here. After only three years, Evolution Sunday has actually evolved into Evolution Weekend -- one of those random and purposeless mutations Darwin told us about.
My Dad was born further down the Salween in China in a Lisu village, and I’ve always wanted to visit the area. I had even dreamed of being the first to paddle it. These folks stayed in Tibet to keep it legal, but I’ll still want to read the whole trip report.

The sportswoman Sarah loses her husband and daughter in a car crash, but she survives. One year later, her friends Beth, Rebecca, Sam and Holly, leaded by Juno, invite her to explore a deep cave in the mountains. When the expedition is about three kilometers underground, a rock collapses and blocks the access tunnel, trapping the group inside the cave. With limited supplies, they try to find a way out, but sooner they face a hunger and savage breed of predators. One of my favourite books of all time is A Devil’s Chaplain by Richard Dawkins, and over the next few weeks I hope to share some of my favourite and (in my opinion) most fascinating points from it. The book itself is a collection of Dawkins’ essays over the last few decades. Topics vary between education, science, law, evolution, memes, and religion. What I love most about reading Dawkins is that he makes his writing so engaging and understandable to the non-professional (like myself) without sacrificing the detail, or “dumbing down”.
He almost assumes that you know what he is talking, which is ok since he often explains it so well anyway. This is very satisfying to the reader, and makes your intelligence feel complimented, instead of insulted.
One of the essays in the book is called “The Information Challenge”. I wouldn’t actually put it in the top 5, but whenever I learn something new about the wonder of evolution it increases my awe that I understand it as well as
The Descent was a prime example of what a great horror movie should be when it was released in 2005 and since then, many horror fans have been hankering after a sequel. Well, our prayers have finally been answered and work has begun on the next film, to be called ‘The De2ent’.
In an interview with Fangoria, Neil Marshall provided information on the new director for the film, “I will not be directing The Descent 2, but I will be overseeing every aspect of the production. There’s nothing to oversee yet, though, as the script is currently being written. My Descent editor Jon Harris will make his feature directing debut with the sequel, and I can’t think of a better man for the job.”
He didn’t reveal any details about the movie, but unlike it’s predecessor we’ll probably see this movie get more ‘Americanized’ in an attempt to make it more marketable. However, I’m glad that editor Jon Harris will be directing because film editors usually make the best directors, kno
Known for her roles in Rent, Clerks II, Men in Black II and Sin City, Caramel Bella Rosario Dawson has produced and starred in her own film, Descent. The psychological thriller was produced by her newly formed company called Trybe Films. The multiethnic beauty of Irish, Native American, Afro-Cuban, and Puerto Rican descent plays the role of “Maya, a college coed who turns into a vengeful seductress after a shocking act of violence” according to a MovieWeb.com article. The movie was written by Talia Lugacy and Brian Priest.
It’s encouraging to see and hear about new movie production companies formed by women of color. Diversity is often underrepresented in the production ranks as well as in the acting world. Trybe’s principles include Dawson, Lugacy and Priest. Look for Rosario’s movie on DVD to check out both her acting and producing talents.

I just noticed that I have made several posts on my blog about Jesus' descent into hell, despite the fact that this topic is relatively obscure. In the process, I have found some pretty cool artwork depicting this descent that I have used to illustrate my posts. I would like to share them here: Pretty cool, huh? Click on each image for a larger version of it. I wish I was an art major so that I knew better how to interpret the various actions and objects that appear in these paintings. A few things I notice are:The Cross bridges the gap between heaven and Hades. This is because it is by the work of the Cross that the early Fathers are freed. The righteous souls appear in a tomb because, like Hades, a tomb is the "abode of the dead."In two of the paintings Jesus stands on the devil because, in conquering Hades, Jesus, "the Author of life" destroyed "him who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and [delivered] all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong bondag
Descent is a movie that recently played in the Tribeca film festival. It follows the story of a woman who is raped and then seeks revenge. Bloddy revenge. I’m guessing you know the type of movie.
But, do you get any of that from the poster? Do you get the sense that this is a woman who has undergone a deeply traumatic event? Someone who is likely to be filled with hate? I’m not, at least not clearly. As a matter of act, I think that if you added a funny tagline to the poster you could pass it off as a poster for a comedy.
In recent years film like Saw and the first Hostel have done a very good job of attracting an audience using very gory marketing material. Although I appreciate what they have done, it’s been aped to death, so I would love to see some horror posters taking a more subtle route. But I think this one goes too far in that direction. It lacks any element to make it unique and to make it stand out.
I kind of see what they were trying to do with it, hint
Something strange is happening – there is a great silence on earth today, a great silence and stillness. The whole earth keeps silence because the King is asleep. The earth trembled and is still because God has fallen asleep in the flesh and he has raised up all who have slept ever since the world began. God has died in the flesh and hell trembles with fear.He has gone to search for our first parent, as for a lost sheep. Greatly desiring to visit those who live in darkness and in the shadow of death, he has gone to free from sorrow the captives Adam and Eve, he who is both God and the son of Eve. The Lord approached them bearing the cross, the weapon that had won him the victory. At the sight of him Adam, the first man he had created, struck his breast in terror and cried out to everyone: “My Lord be with you all”. Christ answered him: “And with your spirit”. He took him by the hand and raised him up, saying: “Awake, O sleeper, and rise from the dead, and Christ will give y
Heh, heh, heh. Our dear Mr. Bloom rants again, this time, in the March 12 issue of Newsweek. From "A Life in Books":I won't say [Shakespeare] "invented" us, because journalists perpetually misunderstand me on that. I'll put it more simply: he contains us. Our ways of thinking and feeling—about ourselves, those we love, those we hate, those we realize are hopelessly "other" to us—are more shaped by Shakespeare than they are by the experience of our own lives.M-mv on Bloom:Book wars (11.30.2003)Harold Bloom (10.28.2005)From The American Religion (Harold Bloom):This book, The American Religion, has lived mostly underground since its original publication fourteen years ago. Out of print, it still circulated steadily among readers increasingly aware of the intensifying strategic alliance between the Republican Party and millions of those I term explicit American Religionists. I bring the book back into print now unrevised, except for this coda to a coda. But then, how much has changed

It started out as a simple scratch in the back of my throat, something easily ignored by the active schedule of handyman duties I was to perform over this last weekend.
The weather was crisp and autumn-esque, the kind of day that just makes you want to run outside and play football, or take a walk through the woods. In short, a pleasant change from the swelter of Summer.
As the sun slowly sank, a new fire began to consume me. I could feel it in my head, I could feel it behind my eyes..
I think I might have a fever…
I thought as I trudged up the stairs to get the thermometer. Sure enough — 102.4! I decided to go to bed early and see how I felt in the morning.
Well as you can imagine things went from bad to worse and I ended up with the worst case of Strep throat I have ever had in my life. My throat was transformed into a raw mass of nerve endings that screamed in constant pain with each swallow.
For most of my convalescence, coffee was replaced by ice water, slurp
