“We don’t have a tremendously long book on Derek Elston, but in the limited viewings that I saw of him I liked that he was a guy that was willing to stick his nose in there, fight for rebounds, had enough skill where he could play facing the basket and just really had the look and feel of a solid Big Ten prospect. He made our Top 75 and we’re talking about a guy who had great rebounding numbers, solid scoring numbers and you expect both to go up in his junior year. According to Dave Telep of Scout.com, IU has picked up a commitment from 2009 forward Derek Elston. The Indianapolis Star has confirmed the news as well.
Elston, from Tipton (IN) picked the Hoosiers over Purdue. Telep has Elston ranked as the No. 75 player in the class of 2009.
Elston’s father, Darrell, played for North Carolina and the Tar Heels had also shown interest in the junior-to-be.
I had the chance to watch Elston at the Kentucky Hoop Fest back in July and was very impressed with his game. Here’s an excerpt from my take on Elston:
Front and center for Elston’s performance for SYF were Purdue head coach Matt Painter and Indiana assistant Rob Senderoff. Elston showed off nice footwork, a knack for loose balls and above average quickness for a big man. Unofficially, the Tipton native scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the contest I saw.

What would have happened if the Astros drafted Derek Jeter as Hal Newhouser insisted?? I try to quantify what would, and could, have occurred. Those readers who are even vaguely interested in baseball history undoubtedly know Hal Newhouser. He was a back-to-back MVP as a pitcher during wartime in the 1940s, and is a Hall of Famer (of marginal merit in my view). Last Month Derek Fisher asked to be released from his contract with the Jazz so he could play in a city capable of providing better cancer treatment for his one year-old daughter. The Jazz quickly complied, and soon afterward Fisher agreed to a three year deal with the Lakers.
The question is, were all of Fisher’s motives genuine? It’s an extremely difficult question to ask or to answer, but Kurt Kragthorpe of the Salt Lake Tribune gives it a shot in this extremely thought-provoking column.
