      Mobile WiMAX Deployment Alternatives
Traditionally, cellular deployments were based solely on achieving ubiquitous coverage with little consideration for capacity requirements. Since the only services offered were voice and the market was uncertain, this was a very reasonable approach. Moreover, the voice service offering is a low data rate application enabling traditional cellular networks to achieve wide outdoor and indoor coverage with a low data rate network (~10-15 kbps bandwidth depending on type of vocoder). As the customer base grew and more services offered, additional base stations were deployed and/or channels added to existing base stations to meet the growing capacity requirements. With Mobile WiMAX, however, operators will want to offer a wide range of broadband services with Quality-of-Service (QoS) support. To

Soldiers getting fat in Iraq: Weight gain during deployment.
But now, troops gain an average of 10 pounds on deployment, Brooks said, and a recent study that has not yet been released showed that troops’ cholesterol levels are going up after just 12 months in the war zone. Once again, I'm above average. I gained about fifteen pounds during my deployment. Before I make my point, let me say that some soldiers do take advantage of their time and hit the usually readily accessible weights (some take time to improve oneself mentally or spiritually as well.). The food's actually pretty good and probably healthier than back in the states, although many buy (or, receive from home) junk food. In addition to the article's reasons ("looking forward" to food, stress, etc. which are all very valid), I'd say, like almost anything else, weight gain during deployment occurs because of a lack of motivation. This may be offensive to some, but here it is: Being deployed is like being happily married. No, I'm not saying running down "bad guys" is

Like Mozilla’s user retention plan and ongoing documentation project, the EWG will serve an important function in Mozilla’s effort to increase Firefox uptake rates and improve the browser’s usability. Specifically, the EWG will attempt to find practical solutions to management and security issues faced by businesses. At the group’s first meeting late last month, the participants discussed their own personal experiences with Firefox in an enterprise environment. In sharing their experiences, the participants found much common ground, and they were able to identify an assortment of challenges that seem to be universal in enterprise environments. Some key issues include packaging, patch and settings management, and user profile handling. (more…) Share This

      Jim Webb's deployment ammendment.
The Jim Webb amendment to HRHR 1585, #2012, is intended by Virginia Senator Jim Webb to help those soldiers upon whom the burden of the war has fallen most heavily. Basically, it says that soldiers can't stay deployed for a time longer than they "nest" or stay at home. So, a soldier can't be deployed for 12 months and only stay home for 11; they have to stay home at least 12 months before leaving again. It sounds like a great idea. Who wouldn't want soldiers staying home? Webb thinks their leader don't- which brings me to the problem I have with this amendment in particular and with union-type legislation for public service employees in general. Webb assumes hostility between decision-makers and those they lead, or, in other words, Webb believes that the Army can perform its duty with a more liberal rotation policy and that it doesn't because it wants to be mean. In business, a union may want to mandate certain break times because the boss, having profit as a motive, may not

Jar not loaded warning/error in Google Web Toolkit (GWT) deployment to tomcat
When a Google Web Toolkit (GWT) web application is deployed to Tomcat web server, you may encounter a warning message as follows.org.apache.catalina.loader.WebappClassLoader validateJarFileINFO: validateJarFile(WEB-INFlibgwt-user.jar) - jar not loaded.See Servlet Spec 2.3, section 9.7.2. Offending class: javax/servlet/Servlet.classNo need to worry too much about this warning message. This raises just because WebappClassLoader has loaded the servlet.jar already. The gwt-user.jar already contain the content of the servlet.jar file. Even though this message can be ignored, this warning message can be avoided just by replacing the gwt-user.jar file with gwt-servlet.jar (which comes with Google Web Toolkit (GWT) download).Following image shows the content of the gwt-user.jar, and the content of the servlet.jar is highlighted. gwt-servlet.jar has been created by removing the content of the servlet.jar from the gwt-user.jar, so this change will not have any impact on your project.

Update rollup for the Microsoft Business Desktop Deployment 2007
Microsoft has released an update rollup for the Microsoft Solution Accelerator for Business Desktop Deployment (BDD) 2007. The update rollup supports Windows Vista and Microsoft Windows XP Professional. The update includes all updates to BDD 2007 since the release version of January 2007. Issues that are fixed in the update rollup: When you try to use BDD 2007 to back up a computer, the backup is not saved to the hard disk. This problem may occur if the ComputerBackupLocation line is not set to a value in the CustomSettings.ini file. By default, this line is blank. When you use the BDD 2007 Workbench to package hotfixes and updates for deployment to computers on the network, not every hotfix is installed. When you use BDD 2007 in a 64-bit operating system to configure a 32-bit deployment point, the 64-bit versions of some files are copied to the deployment point. See here for the complete list of fixes. Download: x86 | x64 BDD 2007, Business Desktop Deployment 2007, Downloads,

Site deployment is running 1 hour behind
We've spotted some last minute formatting issues in Internet Explorer (why, oh why is it ALWAYS Internet Explorer). We're running 1 hour late currently and will be starting the deployment at 8am EDT. Sorry for the delay, but it will be worth it :)

      Site deployment - Monday 11 June, 7:00amEDT
Well, as you've seen from Ted's teaser mails, we have a new PayPerPost.com in development. After a hard couple of weeks work by the entire team, including a particularly grueling day today, we're ready to launch. The site will be down for about 30 minutes tomorrow from 7am Eastern Daylight Time. We're also using a new deployment method from tomorrow. In the past when we've rolled out updates the site has been available while we stabilize the deployment. Obviously this has caused some issues. From tomorrow, when we make deployments the site will be completely unavailable to the general public until we are 100% happy with the deployment. Thanks for your patience.

IPTV deployment - Lessons can be learnt from China
Three of the world's largest IPTV deployments are currently going on in China. The largest is in Hong Kong, where PCCW deployed its own technology (since licensed to Huawei) and now has more than 800,000 customers. On the mainland, Shanghai Media Group (SMG) has deployed IPTV over China Telecom's infrastructure in Shanghai and hit 150,000 subscribers since launching in September 2006. In the north, in Harbin, China Netcom and SMG have partnered to deploy IPTV since the summer of 2005 and are nearing system capacity with 112,000 customers.Ying Wu, a Bell Labs veteran who co-founded UTStarcom, the company providing most of the IPTV infrastructure to the two China telcos, is predicting as many as 1 million mainland Chinese IPTV subscribers by year's end. One reason for that optimism is that UTSI and ZTE, which provides half of the set-top boxes SMG is using in Shanghai, have been able to deliver IPTV technology that uses low-cost set-top boxes and is viable at a very low average revenu
