      Steve’s Birthday, My Departure
I was tempted to leave McLeod Ganj a day or two before Steve’s 27th birthday, but it seemed silly to not stick around to help him celebrate it.  When my 32nd birthday rolls around in September, I hope to have a few travel buddies with whom to hang out. We ordered dinner and a [...]

Norwegian Majesty Delays Charleston Departure Due to Rescue and High Winds
Norwegian Majesty’s arrival into Charleston this weekend has been delayed by one day. The ship will now arrive Sunday, November 18, 2007 because of several factors. On her return to Charleston, Norwegian Majesty was called by the Bermuda Rescue Command Center to come to the aid of a person in a sailboat who needed immediate medical attention. The passenger is currently being treated on board the ship. Also on the return, high winds and heavy seas necessitated the ship to operate at a reduced speed. In addition, planned maintenance during the ship’s stay in Bermuda included the overhaul of a cylinder head on one of the main engines. Unfortunately, after departure, a seal on the new unit developed a minor leak and required remedial work to correct it. Even if the engine had not had this issue, the ship would not be able to go any faster than the speed she is presently doing because of the heavy seas and strong wind conditions.

F1: what Alonso’s McLaren departure could mean for the Brits
And they’re off! Usually the musical chairs start a lot earlier in the season. But Ferrari’s decision to re-sign Massa coupled with Alonso’s late departure from McLaren have finally kicked things off - after the last Grand Prix is long behind us. What does all this mean for the famous and the lesser-known British drivers competing for seats in Formula One? Ladies and gentlemen, please place your bets… Lewis Hamilton: secure in his McLaren drive, it’s all a matter of who’ll be sitting next to him in the (likely rather cramped) garage next year, and how they’ll behave towards him. Rosberg and Kovalainen are both high on the list of possible replacements for Alonso, and both are distinctly northern European in outlook - rather than the fiery Latin types who seem to have been been coming a cropper at McLaren recently. Ron Dennis will have to make a decision about what he needs - will he go for a safe pair of hands, another star-in-the-making or s

Is This the Real Reason for Amanda Chapel’s Departure from Strumpette?
Many in the industry know that “Amanda Chapel” called it quits yesterday. While this may not be the last time we see Strumpette’s lead voice (”she’s” sort of like Roger Clemens, who retires every year), the stats below may give some insights as to why Brian Connolly may have pulled the plug on his mercurial avatar. It seems the PR industry has been voting with its feet. For all of the grief PR pros catch, this stat gives me comfort. It demonstrates that we can discern dishonest astroturf from truthful opinion. And that we demand more accuracy and factual based commentary from our leading online voices. Astroturf is the industry term for false grassroot campaigns. It’s hard to argue that the Amanda avatar was sincerely trying to fight hypocrisy behind a fake name, false pictures, and blatantly biased personal attacks targeted at some of its staff’s former employers (Edelman). I will not miss “Amanda.” We’ve sparre

No, this wasn't Clocks or the Departure but some very cringe worthy act whose name will not be printed and never will be (we can only hope). So the low-down on Clocks; hailing from the not so epic, Epson, but with catchy Beatles riffs and ?wanna wanna's', mixed with some northern tom foolery and dancy little numbers, this band impersonate bands such as the La's and at times, Oasis and other much loved noise from the mid 90s' era. If only they could jump around on stage or wear something, which didn't say ?t-shirt and jeans', perhaps, gimp suits? Then maybe, just maybe, they could take the indie circuit by storm. 99 Days Until Departure
As the Countdown Timer to the right indicates, I’m 99 days from expected departure! When I first set the timer up earlier in the year, I believe it was somewhere just over 200 days. While that may seem like a drop in the bucket, in reality it has been an eternity! The waiting this year has reminded me of the months preceding my first semester of college. After the excitement of high school graduation, I found myself unable to get a summer job. Having moved to Virginia two years prior, and not done a good job at making friends, I just kept telling myself I’d start a new (and more sociable) chapter of life once I arrived at college. In the meantime though, I was simply counting down the days. This time around, I have a career and plenty of friends, however I once again find myself simply counting down the days until the next (and most adventurous) chapter in my life. I stay in during the weekends to prevent myself from spending money. I’m not pressing myself to d

      Hansen's Bittersweet Departure
Barbara Erwin is no longer Kentucky's problem. So, I don't monitor the WestChiTown papers on a daily basis anymore. Since she's no longer a threat here, there's something a little improper about an abiding interest there. It's like getting into somebody else's business. But I must confess an interest in how the St Charles authorities resolve two open issues: The Erwin/Gaffney memo and the lost personnel file. So, I still peek at the papers a couple of times a week - to see if anyone still cares.I'm glad I saw yesterday's column from Kane County Chronicle Managing Editor Kristen Turner regarding Chris Hansen. Although I have never met Mr. Hansen, after covering D303 stories for the past few months I feel like I've come to know the players. Peter Moore Xbox Departure Theories
There are a number of conspiracy theories running around the internet this morning about why Peter Moore of Xbox fame decided to depart. Well beyond the standard HR response of “We are sorry to see him go” the speculation on the departure as either an accountability measure, or as part of a long range plan to move back to California, or some other reason about the 1 Billion dollar charge that Xbox is going to take to fix the Red Rings oh Death, it all adds up to a great morning. On the Mini Microsoft/MSFT Extreme Make over. The conspiracy theory runs around the idea of accountability Of course, even if Mr. Moore was asked to head for the nearest exit, we wouldn’t want to piss him off over at EA. So, I’m marking this up as how it was presented, with zero amount of accountability being exhibited. Speaking to the Xbox Live Director of Programming Larry Hryb, aka Major Nelson, Moore explained: This is something that has been in the works for few weeks; it is completely and utterly unrelated to anything that’s gone on in the business in the last few weeks and it is purely about family; my family. I’ve decided to get back to our Bay Area roots and I joined a company I’m excited about but at the same time it’s going to break my heart to leave here. Chauncey's Departure Could Shape The East
It's ironic to think that the Detroit Pistons, who were lauded for their teamwork and unity, could be divided once their players ask for a bigger paycheck. Yet with Chauncey Billups opting out of his last year in Detroit, it's certainly heading that way.Billups loves Detroit and says he doesn't want to leave. "I really like it here. I really do, and I want to stay." Of course if he loved being in Detroit so much, he wouldn't need to opt out of his contract. Billups wants a giant deal, and forcing GM Joe Dumars to match offers is the only way he's getting it.However you have to consider whether Joe Dumars is committed to keeping Billups around. The problem with being a 5-man-team is you have a lot of parts to keep in check, and giving one a max contract means the other ones would want one too.Right now Detroit is paying a lot of money to Webber, Mohammed, and whoever they get in return for Rasheed Wallace (assuming they dump him). Editor's departure captured in just a Flicker
Call it a bit of a "video killed the radio star" moment, circa 2007: John Curley, who had been a deputy managing editor of The San Francisco Chronicle, announced that he was let go from the newspaper by posting the news on Flickr, the photo-sharing Web site."I leave with great sadness, but not a trace of bitterness," Curley wrote in his entry on Tuesday, which included a picture of his desk at the newspaper before he packed. "We all know what is happening to the newspaper industry, and it is not pretty." One of the biggest things happening to the newspaper industry is that people are flocking to Web sites like Flickr, which is owned by Yahoo, for news, gossip and friendship, and turning to newsprint less often. Even Flickr, once primarily a site for swapping images, has become more of an online community: in this case, dozens of people turned out to post comments of solidarity on Curley's page."Off you go to something greater, man," wrote someone who calls himself Razorbern and uses a

Paris Hilton’s departure causes Papparazzi frenzy and craziness
Moments after Paris hugged her parents goodbye — she was handcuffed and put in the back of a Sheriff’s cruiser. The car was then swarmed by a legion of aggressive paparazzi, who gave chase as far as they could as it pulled away from the house. source

      Blair announces his departure
A commentator on Radio 4 this morning opined that Tony Blair's legacy would be overshadowed by one word: Iraq. I suspect his whole era will be overshadowed more by the word: deception. (Curious how Iraq and Liar are almost anagrams). This evening on the Channel 4 news Lord Butler, who as Robin Butler was the Cabinet Secretary saw a lot of the inner workings of the first Blair government, observed that they were better at politics than at government.(c) Hal Westhead 2005

      Counting Down to Departure
5 months until I submit my notice at work 6 months until my lease ends 7 months until I leave The numbers continue to get smaller in the multitude of ways I track the ever-decreasing time between this moment, and when I depart the country for my world travels. 7 episodes of The Sopranos before I downgrade my cable TV 1 season’s worth of DC United soccer games left to watch I’m a TV addict, though there are only a few shows I’ll truly miss (and watch the DVD’s later).  Lost, Heroes, and The Office come to mind.  The Major League Soccer Championship game is being hosted in Washington, DC at RFK Stadium this year, keeping alive the idea that I could see my team win the 2007 season on their home turf, a few weeks before I leave. 2 calendars (1 at home, 1 at work) Countdown plugin for blog (upper right corner) Every few days, I cross off a batch of dates from my home and work calendars.  Special joy is taken on the days I can flip the whole page over to the

Court blocks Zia’s departure, Hasina set for return
Dhaka, April 22 (IANS) The Bangladesh government’s plans to exile former prime minister Khaleda Zia received a serious setback when the Dhaka High Court asked the government to explain within five days if she was interned at home. The development took place even as authorities braced to meet the likelihood of another former prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, defying a ban on her entry and landing at the Dhaka airport from London Monday. Responding to a habeas corpus petition filed on behalf of Zia, a division bench of the court issued a rule upon the government to explain within five days why Zia should not be brought before the court “to satisfy that she is not interned in her Dhaka cantonment residence”, Star Online reported. The bench comprising Justices M.A. Wahhab Mian and Emdadul Haque gave the ruling as the government side “apparently could not satisfy” the court that Zia was not house-confined. “The rule is returnable within five days,” sa

“differences in philosophy” cited in Edu Commish finalist Erwin's early departure
In July 2005, Kentucky Education Commissioner finalist, Barbara Erwin, received a new, five-year contract with St. Charles School District 303 (west of Chicago between Elgin and Aurora) that would have extended through June 2010.Despite this commitment, Erwin announced in October 2006 that she would retire in July. The Daily Herald quipped, "Erwin certainly is prepared for retirement" and pointed out that she would now receive pension money from districts in Illinois, Arizona, Texas, and possibly Indiana. (Indiana is apparently unconfirmable)Josh Stockinger of the Kane County Daily Herald reports:This is at least the third public education job Erwin has sought since announcing in October her early retirement from St. Charles District 303.The veteran educator said Thursday she reconsidered retirement after being contacted by job recruiters for school systems in at least three states. She added she wasn’t completely sold on retirement when she decided to leave St. Charles — a move sh

      Duncan’s departure
We knew it was coming, so it came as no surprise that Duncan Fletcher today resigned as England coach. As Andrew Miller notes in his piece, all coaching careers (like politicians’) have to end in failure. Fletcher, for all his faults in the past 18 months, has been the single most important figure in the [...]

      My Pre-Departure Task List
It was 5 years ago this week when I put pen to paper and wrote down my goal to travel around the world. The exact date was April 19, 2002. This week also marks the 3 month anniversary of my blog. And while we’re on the topic, March 2007 marked the 8th anniversary of my domain name, GoBackpacking.com! As I reflect over the past 3 months of blogging, I realize I’ve yet to touch upon the planning aspects of my adventure in a detailed, sustained, or meaningful way. I love the logistical aspect of travel, and have learned quite a bit from others who have gone before me. Hopefully, some insight into my approach will prove useful to future travelers. After all, I picked my domain name in 1999 with the desire to encourage every person to “go backpacking.” So without further ado…Click on the text link if you have Microsoft Excel, or click on the “View” box to see an HTML version (everyone else). Blockbuster CEO Departure an Opportunity to Buy
I disagree with pundits about Blockbuster (BBI) going down with the departure of their CEO by the end of 2007. He is not as good as people think. Total Access is hugely successful, but he took a long time before responding to the Netflix (NFLX) threat successfully. Shame on him for that. I think the company is finally doing things right and I like it here. Without him, it will be even better.-- Faisal LaljeeFull Disclosure: I do not own BBI but my position might change anytime without notice.

      JFK Departure
It's easy to get worn down of the early mornings, late nights and weekends away from the family. But it's also nice to sit back and take in a great view if only for a few moments and realize that life in the pointy end of a plane does offer something that ground-bound office dwellers can only dream about. So I give you a view of the Big Apple yesterday morning at 7:30ish AM. JFK is an easy and relaxed place at that time of the day and for a Sunday in December New York City is a peaceful and pretty place. The Flight Path (more or less):Left turn out off Runway 22R JFKJFK with Manhattan in the distanceManhattan, Laguardia Airport, Central Park, The Empire State Building, The Statue of Liberty. And we are on our way back home to the west coast of the continent. 6 hours to go.Related:JFK and area - Google Maps
