      Mona's Restaurant Denver: Review
If you are a regular shopper of a natural grocery and if you've cut out trans fats and other preservatives out of your pantries at home then you may find that going out to eat often makes your stomach churn and leave you feeling sluggish. Even though I love going out to eat I've noticed that I have to be even more careful of the choices I make or else I will feel awful afterward, even if the food is delicious. Breakfasts are an even greater challenge as the oils restaurants use to make eggs are often incredibly greasy and rancid.I am pleased to say that Mona's Restaurant in Denver offers a great, healthy, simple gourmet menu. I went to the new location on South Broadway a few Sundays ago. A friend of mine suggested the place. I took a look at their menu online but didn't find it too exciti

Rush Limbaugh Sings: "I'm Dreaming Of Riots In Denver"
Conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh downplayed his "dreaming of riots in Denver" statement, saying that he wasn't calling for riots and was referring to warnings of trouble if super delegates decide the nomination at the Democratic National Convention. Limbaugh's comments on his syndicated show Wednesday prompted Mayor John Hickenlooper to say: "Anyone who would call for riots in an American city has clearly lost their bearings." Hear him sing: Limbaugh made his comment Wednesday to the tune of the holiday song, "White Christmas," and said riots during the convention would ensure Democrats don't get elected. Chargers Move Closer to the #3 Seed with 23-3 Beating of Denver
The San Diego Chargers moved closer to the number three seed in the AFC Monday night, and a playoff meeting in two weeks with either the Tennessee Titans or the Cleveland Browns. They did it with a rather easy looking 23-3 victory over the overmatched and clearly frustrated Denver Broncos, who spent more of the night jawing with the Chargers then they did trying to get things done on the field. It started early with John Lynch throwing LaDainian Tomlinson’s helmet after a short run, and went on all night, with players on each side exercising their mouths more than their muscle. With the victory, the Chargers move within one game of clinching that #3 seed. They will do so if they, and they should, take care of business Sunday in Oakland when they take on the lowly Raiders. A loss and a Steelers win over the Ravens Sunday in Baltimore, and the Chargers would be matched up at home with the dangerous Jacksonville Jaguars, a team that have already lost to this season. Small businesses often find themselves in need of assistance when it comes to their computer networks. A Denver computer consultant who can come onsite and provide professional computer help is the perfect solution. A major concern of businesses these days, is spyware, and for good reason. Hackers and criminals write these programs to steal your information. Financial data, customer invoices, patient records, among other valuable information is all at risk if you have spyware on your computers.Spyware collects information from your computer without you even being aware it is happening. While some spyware can cause your system to crash, popups to appear, and productivity disruptions; the most dangerous programs do not. The program runs invisibly on your computer.Removal of spyware can be difficult and time consuming, not to mention dealing with the consequences of stolen information. For this reason, to prevent spyware is the best method of dealing with the problem to begin with. A se

Denver Should Trade Nene For Ron Artest
With the Nuggets Nene out for at least the next 6 weeks, it might be time to consider making a trade. It’s no secret that Denver shopped Marcus Camby during the off-season, hoping to find a younger player that could replace Camby and also get Denver out of the luxury tax. Denver’s urge to avoid the luxury tax is so great that they traded Reggie Evans for the 76er’s Steven Hunter and a throw-in during the off-season - a lopsided trade in Philadelphia’s favor. Clearly, the Nuggets want to get out of luxury tax territory and they’re willing to trade a key big man to do it. So why not trade Nene for Ron Artest? (more…)

      Finale: Denver is Safe Again
“My name is Thomas Archer and I’m with the office of the Attorney General. I’ll be laying out the basic details that the investigating officers have communicated to us and then I’ll take some questions afterwards. “At approximately 2:45PM on the day in question, the suspect Mr. Cutler was observed weeping on a bench at the playing field. Witnesses report that he was mumbling about Papa John’s pizza and a jam band, the String Cheese Incident. “At 2:48PM, the suspect rose from the bench and began sprinting across the playing field while screaming, and I quote, ‘Cotton candy! I want the blue kind!’ It is believed his speech was directed at a vendor on the opposite side of the field. Undercover security personnel promptly subdued the suspect by tackling him to the turf. ” The suspect was escorted from the playing field. Witnesses report that he repeatedly screamed, and I quote, ‘Yo Dominique! If the dude shows up, pay him

      Neighborhood Flix . Denver
There are three independent theaters in Denver, all operated by Landmark Theaters: The Mayan on Broadway, the Esquire on 6th, and the Chez Artiste on Colorado Boulevard.  Between those three you’re always able to find a complete rotation of current indy films on any given night. I was pleased to find a brand new independent theater just blocks from my front door: The locally owned Neighborhood Flix takes indy film to a new level of service with modern design and an in-house restaurant. They’re located in the Lowenstein Theatre complex, an old theater on Colfax that that was renovated one year ago and now home to the new Tattered Cover Bookstore and Twist and Shout independent records. This evening I visited with co-owner Melodie and my friend Mark who came on board as the bar/beverage manager.  Neighborhood Flix is an upscale independent theater. Their three theaters are of moderate size with comfortable seats and modern acoustics. They were also kind enough to give m

Packers 6-1 Following Monday Night OT Drama in Denver
For teams to take the next step into going from okay to good football teams, sometimes you need to win a game like what the Green Bay Packers did Monday night at Invesco Field in Denver. They built a 13-7 halftime lead, but allowed the Broncos to sneak back in with two second half field goals to tie the game at 13 heading into overtime. With the Detroit Lions peeking over their shoulder for a share of first place in the NFC North, the Pack put that thought to rest right away, as QB Brett Favre hit WR Greg Jennings on the first play of overtime with an 82-yard TD to win the game 19-13 and improve to 6-1 on the season. It was the play of the season for the Packers, and per usual, Favre was right in the middle of it. The QB, who has talked about retiring for what seems like forever, hit two long TD passes Monday night and showed that usual veteran poise that is making 2007 seem like 1997 for him all over again. Some say that Favre has lost some zing on the ball, or that he is not the p

Rockies Swept: There is No Joy in Denver
Seems appropriate (sob)(apologies to:)Ernest Lawrence ThayerThe outlook wasn't brilliant for the Colorado nine that day;The score stood four to three with but one inning more to play. And then when Cooney died at first and Barrows did the same,A sickly silence fell upon the patrons of the game.A straggling few got up to go in deep despair. The rest clung to the hope which springs eternal in the human breast; They thought if only Casey could but get a whack at that -We'd put up even money now with Casey at the bat.But Flynn preceded Casey, as did also Jimmy Blake,And the former was a lulu and the latter was a cake;So upon that stricken multitude grim melancholy sat,For there seemed but little chance of Casey's getting to the bat.But Flynn let drive a single, to the wonderment of all,And Blake, the much despised, tore the cover off the ball; And when the dust had lifted, and the men saw what had occurred,There was Jimmy safe at second and Flynn a-hugging third. Then from five thousand thro

Irish hockey overcome deficit, delay in 4-3 victory over No. 5 Denver (CSTV U-WIRE)
(CSTV U-WIRE) SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Notre Dame was a whirlwind on the ice in the second period, bombarding Denver with shots and making the Pioneers dizzy with dazzling puck control in the offensive zone — and then an actual whirlwind intervened. The No. 11 Irish (2-1) weathered a 12-minute delay after the second period Thursday when a tornado warning prompted an evacuation of the Joyce Center. The stadium eventually refilled, and the Irish held on in the third to defeat No. 5 Denver 4-3. The more…

Live Blog: First Snow in Denver
7:02 AM: Well I’ve awoken this morning to a terrible, terrible disappointment. Despite meterological assurances that the merciless fist of bitter summer would be pushed aside by the chastity belt of winter as Denver slept, I peer out my window to see leaf litter on a bare ground. 7:08 AM: Six minutes of intense concentration has not changed the situation. Looks like it’s six more weeks of summer. But, it’s probably my fault for wanting something so much. Time to go cut myself. 7:09 AM: Actually, I better eat some breakfast before I punish myself because I’ll need the energy to keep from passing out. Kelloggs Smart Start Antioxidants. Yummy! 7:18 AM: So, it turns out that Redstone is due south of Carbondale along 133. And Coal Basin is due west of Redstone. So that answers that. Chances I put my atlas back on the shelf: 0%. 7:27 AM: I know that black suit is supposed to be flattering, but you can still tell Hillary has a big ass. 7:45 AM: Only 4 hours, 15 minutes until lunchti

      The Denver Ticket Scalper
For those who haven't heard the story, a 23 year old man was arrested in Denver last week for selling/scalping tickets outside Coors Field prior to a Rockies playoff game. Without touching on the details and examining how this case is an example of criminal stupidity, let's look at what went unreported.Prior to selling to the undercover cops, the Denver Ticket Scalper sold only 2 of his 60 tickets to eager Rockies fans. Through Right Eyes has learned that the buyer of the first two tickets was none other than Democratic Presidential Candidate John Edwards! The "champion for the poor" was once again using his wallet to illustrate just how irresponsible his personal spending is (imagine what he'd do with the country's spending) and just how detached he is from the plight of the poor.$400 for a hair cut? No problem. $600 for 2 tickets worth a third of that? No problem. And just who was the other ticket for?? John Kerry was the one who joined Edwards at the game.

Secret Revealed: Denver Girl Finds Out She's "Fat" (She said it)
Denver Public School District sent notices home with children that listed their height, weight and body mass index. Isabel, the daughter of Flaurette Martinez looked at her notice and for the first time in her life found out that she was, as the notice said, "overweight".Fearful the family secret about Isabel would get out, Flaurette told 9NEWS that "If she would have dropped this letter, a student may have found it and may have exposed it to other students." Our TRE reporter on the scene was able to interview Flaurette...TRE: "Are you saying that, not only your Isabel, but the other students didn't know she was fat, I mean, 'overweight'? Does your daughter go to a school for the blind?"FLA: No response.TRE: "What does Isabel think about this?"FLA: "The part that upset her the most as she started reading it, there it stated that she was overweight and she started to cry saying, 'Mom, that school tells me I'm fat.'"TRE: "So, Isabel says she's 'fat'."FLA: "My daughter is big bo

From Munich to Durham and Charlotte to Denver, It's Beer Festival Season
Even if you were unable to get to Munich for the 174th Oktoberfest that wrapped up on Sunday or cannot break away to get to Denver for the 26th annual Great American Beer Festival that kicks off on Thursday, you don't have to feel left out of the beer festival scene.Germany's Oktoberfest was attended by 6.2 million visitors this year, down by about 300,000 from the record set in 2006. Those who did show up were thirsty, consuming 6.7 million liters of beer, up 10 percent. In Denver, they are getting ready for the GABF, which runs from Oct. 11-13. The GABF will pour more than 1,800 beers from 474 American breweries to more than 40,000 beer fans. While I am not earning any frequent flyer miles going to Germany or Colorado this year, my beer festival card has been filled the last two weekends. On Sept. 29th it was the ninth annual Charlotte Oktoberfest at the Metrolina Expo Center just north of Charlotte, N.C. The festival was presented by The Carolina BrewMasters and Creative Loafing, a

      Shish Kabob Grill . Denver
If you only visit Shish Kabob Grill to have a few cups of Turkish coffee that’s reason enough to stop into this centrally located Denver establishment. Located in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, they’re directly across the street from the Colorado State Capitol. An experienced family runs the kitchen and oversees excellent service. The decor featuring muted yellows and reds is mellow and relaxed, and you’ll see patrons ranging from state senators to college kids. A blend of Syrian, Greek, and Turkish food, these dishes are ample and filling. As expected there’s a wide selection of gyros, and entrees featuring lamb and beef. My favorite dish is actually the yogurt soup appetizer, a flavorful mix of cucumbers and seasoned yogurt. If you need to wire yourself up for a night on the town try the Turkish coffee. You’ll initially be surprised at the miniature doll size cup, (by U.S. standards,) but receive a small pot which keeps it hot for subsequent cups.

      South Gaylord Street . Denver
Last week I had the chance to wander around the South Gaylord Street neighborhood of Denver’s Washington Park East during a weekday lunch break. I travel through Washington Park often, but rarely make it into this hidden jewel of a street. Founded in 1924 South Gaylord Street is one of the oldest retail districts in Denver outside of the central downtown area. Local businesses including a movie theater moved in through the 20s and 30s to serve the community, and when the car culture of the 50s and 60s arrived the district stayed alive and became an eclectic artist community with independent retail and restaurants - to which it still is today. If you’re visiting the area of Cherry Creek, Washington Park, or DU (University of Denver,) it’s worth checking out South Gaylord for the variety of food, sports, art, and good friendly people. Business list and map Picture below - two bike shops of course. The Singletrack Factory Bike Skate and Snowboard Shop, and Tandem
