Covent Garden, set in the heart of London is a wonderful place for finding subjects to paint - from the building itself, with it's glass covered arcades (providing a bright but soft light), all the colourful shops, arts and crafts market (The Apple Market) while not forgetting the street entertainers. sci-tech/article/32798 OLEDs are thin, organic materials sandwiched between two electrodes, which illuminate when an electrical charge is applied. They’re so thin, that they could be applied to rooms as a type of wall paper to glow at the touch of a finger or when someone enters the room. Like LEDs they produce light very efficiently. But OLEDs also have to potential to be made at a very low cost, because they can be printed “roll-to-roll” like a newspaper. Having watched these big waves crashing onto the North Yorkshire Coast at Whitby for a while I noticed that some of them created a nice zigzag line into the painting combined with a bright but wonderful hazy morning light and some spindrift from the strong wind. This view along South Bank towards Big Ben (on the opposite side of the River Thames) attracted my attention due to a couple of things. Firstly the intense light, in places ring lighting some of the figures or parts of them and the interesting mixing of shadows cast by them. With new subject matter almost around every corner and combined with a wonderful crisp autumnal light, this painting came from a very productive afternoon in the countryside to west of Stamford.Step One:The basic drawing (using oil paint mixed with turps - quite thin) of the main elements was completed. Some work on establishing the darks for the tree trunk followed.Step Two:This involved getting the dark to mid tones established. For the trees various mixes of greens (mainly from yellows and blues but some Viridian used sparingly), also used were green-browns along with in places some reds - the reflections were completed at the same time but painted a tone darker. The farm lane with it's mixes of browns, reds and blues completed this step.Step Three:Having established the mid and darks,

The rendering output was very well done and they also included a whole 3d cityscape around the project that stretches out far. You'll see neat little things like animated fountains, walking people, helicopters landing on a helipad, vehicular traffic....very beautiful...and to top it off, a short animated view of the project at night time!

Curt is out of town for nine days so I made the track into Seoul (Guui Station) myself for the very first time. I got onto the bus to Seoul as we do every Saturday only to find that it was standing room only. This has NEVER happened before. If you knew the way Korean bus drivers drive you would understand when I say I was scared for my life. The stops which jar you out of your seat are even more terrifying when standing. When they take a curve, they seem to accelerate and I'm always surprised the bus doesn't end up on it's side. I hung on the overhead bar for dear life and prayed the entire 1 hour and 15 minutes it took to arrive at Gangnum Station. I was also "thrilled" that the bus driver had the heat blasting at 90 degrees so I was also dripping in sweat by the time the ride ended. The windows were so fogged you couldn't see out. There are quite a few stops before my station and I was "lucky" enough to snag a seat two stops before I needed to get off.Then it was off to the subwa

Alistair Butt © 2007.This stunning old stone farm, located in the Edale valley, Peak District National Park, Derbyshire, now looked after by the National Trust, was made even more special by an overnight covering of snow and afternoon shadows.Stage One:The under painting was done really to get the basic position of the elements, not that there's much but getting some things correct at this stage is important e. g. the sky, as this would allow the bare trees to be painted over the sky in the next stage.Stage Two:This started with the background hills, some lightening and darkening was done being careful not to add to much wet paint in the tree sections. To establish the full tonal range of the picture the top left hand dark tree branches were painted next before adding more detail to the lower hill between the tree and the left hand building (farm house).The left building was finished next, by adding details to the lit side, then

"Morning Sunlight" Staithes, North Yorkshire 12"x12".Oil on board. Alistair Butt © 2007.The sun had just risen and it's light was covering the whole village of Staithes in a wonderful golden glow. What attracted me to this scene was a combination of the warm light on both the cliffs and beach contrasting with the cool shadows, the highlight in the sky and this also reflected on the outgoing tide whilst not forgetting the group of boats and the fisherman which added scale to the picture.Stage One:After the drawing (using thinned oil paint) had been completed the basic shapes of the cliffs and sky were painted first. The sky was just simple areas of colour/color blended together so as not to create any hard edges. A lot of different colour/color mixes made up the underlying element of the cliffs and in places, marker (darker or lighter) spots, were places as guides for stage two. The beach and water areas followed using the same methods as the cliffs but more attention was given to mak

The whole board was given a turps wash, even though there was an overall under wash which had been previously applied and dry. This was to help create a more fluid, softer under painting and therefore help in the soft mist effect that was required. The whole board was covered quite quickly but still keeping key reference points for use later. Note that only a few branches have been placed at this stage, as the painting of the background, in this case the sky, was more important - so that it could dry slightly and then be over painted with the branches.Stage Two:Having had a just over a day, since the under painting, the detail could be added. This started in the background and worked forwards. The bank of trees on the left hand side needed to be finished first and was just painting the branches over the

The top picture shows the completed first stage and is concerned mainly in establishing the basic colours/colors, the position of the elements, even though a basic drawing using thinned (with Turps) oil paint was underneath, done as quickly possible but with accuracy. Getting this part right makes the following stage, or stages (if required) much easier. For this painting the paint was applied almost neat out of the tubes, i.e. very little medium was added to thin the paint and the board had three coats of white Gesso primer with texture paste added to the second coating.Stage Two:Having done most of the hard work, the second stage (bottom picture) is mainly going over the whole painting adjusting colours/colors, sharpening or softening edges, defining detail etc. The under painting done in stage one really helps as at times only m

It was announced at Microsoft’s E3 2007 press conference that Infinity Ward would offer a Call of Duty 4 Multiplayer Public Beta exclusively on the Xbox 360. The beta will be available on Xbox Live starting in August 2007 and will be the largest beta available on Xbox Live from a third party to date. In the meantime check out this video that shows off a new gameplay feature ‘Slight of Hand’ we can look forward to trying out. At Nintendo’s E3 2007 Press Conference they showed off The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass for the Nintendo DS, which is one of Nintendo’s most anticipated upcoming titles. They gave a long stage demo where they played through one of the dungeon levels. Phantom Hourglass is entirely touch-screen controlled, and while this may seem crazy once you see the game in motion and watch how fluid it all controls, you WILL be a believer! I’m also digging the new weapons and how the touch-screen really revolutionizes the way you would play. The game looks sweet and due to it’s top-down nature and cell-shaded (er, toon-shaded) style, it looks like a cross between A Link to the Past and The Wind Waker! In fact, Bill Trinen said that in his opinion Phantom Hourglass is the best Zelda yet! It’s coming to the US on October 1st and as recently reported will include multiplayer! The biggest surprise of Nintendo’s E3 2007 press conference is, without a doubt, their new fitness, exercise, yoga, aerobic training game called “Wii Fit“. Wii Fit is super unique since the game comes bundled with a unique wireless balance board/scale that the user stands on. It then can detect shifts in your body weight and uses that in various mini-games. But Wii Fit is much more than just a game, it records various statistics and you can put them against your friends or family over a measurement of time, to see who is burning off the most fat (er, body mass) and such. From simple yoga style games to a DDR Lite stepping game to a mini-game in which you must headbutt soccer balls from going into the goal with your head, Nintendo’s Wii Fit seems to be a truly mass market training game that goes beyond the standard industry demographic and instead targets older players, especially women and mothers, who may want a fun way to exercise in their home using the Ni
