There are many theories as to why the Norse settlements collapsed in Greenland. Jared Diamond, author of Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed, suggests that some or all of five factors contributed to the demise of the Greenland colony: cumulative environmental damage, gradual climate change, conflicts with hostile neighbors, the loss of

For most businesses, when something goes wrong in the course of business operations for profit, expect marketing to carry the burden of taking the blame. Such is the same issue right now for the big three automobile manufacturers of Detroit, Chevrolet, Chrysler and Ford. Their much celebrated losses and impending financial catastrophe has been blamed [...]
Directed by Oscar winner Peter Jackson, The Frighteners mixes comedy, thriller, and horror very well. Although it was a Box Office disappointment in 1996, it was a must see just for it's amazing digital effects. Michael J. Book Description : As the dollar continues to weaken throughout the world, it has become clear that the impact is going to be significant as well as far reaching. This book explores the number of reasons for the dollar's current state, including the prior structural flaws of the dollar, the growing trade deficit, the Euro and other international factors. It also discusses the results of the dollar's fall and how it will impact economies worldwide. Continuing where The Demise of the Dollar left off, it explores the dollar's increasingly sharp d

The Demise of the Art Critic
Prior to the in the late 19th century, before the emergence of modernism, when skill, technical prowess and accuracy were the factors used to determine how good a painting was, the role of the art critic was quite clearly defined because of the clearly defined factors and principles that were used to determine whether an artwork was good or not . Now that artists are producing such a wide variety of works that no longer conform to any sort of clearly defined or universally accepted standards, guidelines or conventions, the role and purpose of the art critic has come into question. Artistic trends and movements are coming and going quicker than ever and artists are constantly experimenting with new mediums and different techniques in order to achieve vastly different goals and results which has resulted in the task of properly critiquing most artworks almost impossible.
The aesthetics of an artwork continue to play a less and less important role in defining

While all eyes are on Darfur, the UN has reported that there is a more grave humanitarian crisis in Somalia. The region between Mogadishu and the market town of Afgooye is filled with refugees from the fighting between the interim government and Islamists. It has less aid workers and is getting much less money than the Darfur region, while being bloodier and more dire. Certainly shows that crises like the one in Darfur are not isolated problems.

The Asiatic elephant is in serious trouble. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) estimates wild populations which are scattered throughout India, Nepal, Indonesia, China and a few other countries is between 25,600 to 32,750 individuals. That represents a stark decline over the last few decades and the results of habitat loss due to increased agriculture and related shootings as well as some ivory poaching.Perhaps the single great obstacle facing Asiatic elephant recovery however is a lack of publicity. You're probably thinking, "I've seen tons of television programs and articles on the decline of elephants. They get all kinds of publicity." Well, you're partially right.African elephants are the darlings of the wildlife conservation world and dominate nearly all news coverage pachyderms receiv

An international team of archaeologists has used radar technology to confirm the Cambodian temple of Angkor Wat was surrounded by the pre-industrial world’s most extensive urban sprawl.
In today’s Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the researchers report that NASA radar technology has helped reveal an ancient city, hidden beneath tropical vegetation.
The city has an area of almost 1000 square kilometres and is linked by a tightly integrated network of roads and water channels.
The study provides the “definitive map” of the Greater Angkor region, the researchers say.
And they say it helps support theories proposed by French archaeologist Bernard-Philippe Groslier in the 1950s, who

Speaking in an encore presentation to last Fridays Sermon from Iran, Provisional Friday Prayer Leader of Tehran Ayatollah Mohammad Emami Kashani said the direction of the nation under the leadership of the Supreme Leader is keeping within the guidelines as expressed by the late Imam Rouhollah oussavi Khomeini. During the Friday Sermon, one of an seemingly endless parade of ceremonies marking the “18th Demise Anniversary of Khomeini;” he said: “in revival of Mohamedan Islam in the world, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution is emphasizing on the need to abide by the authentic version of Islam, particularly the teaching of the glorious Quran and the Tradition of the Holy Prophet of Islam in a bid to strengthen the foundations of Islamic unity." This is the continuing refrain these days, which refers to Iran as the leader in unifying all of Islam in the world. The Friday Prayer leader also spoke of the U.S’ intent regarding Iranian nuclear capabilities is “agai

The victory of Mayawati in UP elections of 2007 is historical because it heralds the transfer of real political power to Dalits from patronising politicians who have pretended for decades to be their benefactors and friends, without ever giving them an equal seat at their table of power and social dominance. More significantly, the results signal the accelerating and almost complete marginalization of the Congress party in the state. The decline of the Congress actually started three decades back, when Mrs Indira Gandhi imposed the Emergency, preceded by the hollow 'Garibi Hatao' slogan, which enriched corrupt bureaucrats and politicians through the all-pervasive 'Licence-permit Raj' and enraged the common man, whose life became worse.
After her rout in 1977, Indira Gandhi would never have come back to power had the ill-conceived Shah Commission not allowed her to project herself as a wronged angel. Again, after another four almost disastrous years

There has been a lot of talk over what Britney could possibly do next to prove herself a complete and total disaster. My bet was safely cast on her becoming impregnated by Ron Birkhead and then marrying Howard Stern. Not the ex-lover of Anna Nicole, that’s way too obvious and as proved by shaving her head, Brit likes to keep fans on their toes. Instead she will marry the gross-out King of Sirius radio himself and they will star together on their own reality show “Chaotic Again” in which Stern smacks her ass with a raw fish for an hour. But no, Britney has once again done the unexpected. The story starts out all peaches-and-cream: She went to church after getting out of rehab. Awe, how nice. Isn’t it sweet that she is now a god fearing ex-drug addict and sinner along with being an ex-pop star? But wait just one second-a soul is not saved by merely donning panties. The story continues with her body guard almost shooting a photographer. How fucking sweet, huh?On a serious note thou

LOS ANGELES, March 13 /PRNewswire/ -- With recent comments from U.S. National Intelligence Director John Negroponte that ailing Cuban leader Fidel Castro's days "seem to be numbered," and discussion in congress of opening travel to Havana, interest in pre-Communist Cuba and Cuban Diaspora issues have caused unprecedented interest in books about Cuba and Cuban Americans. Indeed, a quick Internet search will find an extraordinary 65,396 books currently available about Cuba. The best among them may be the new historical novel, Broken Paradise (ISBN-13: 978-0-7432-8779-1), by Cecilia Samartin. Broken Paradise takes an uncompromising and compassionate look at how politics can divide friends and families. Rooted in the author's actual experience, it is an insider's view of a culture that is fading with her parents' generation.
In the absence of institutional memory, this work is an achievement that captures the heart of a culture that history books simply do
The rain poured heavily as his peers, family members and fellow comrades weep on. The rain couldn't have come at a better time. Indeed, I believe, somewhere in Heaven, sadness prevails over the lost of a good man.He is a hardworking soldier, always striving to learn more and do more.As all his fellow comrades salute him with utmost respect for the last time, the rain got heavier. His fellow soldiers fired 3 rounds of fire. The national flag was folded and presented to his family member.Singapore lost a great soldier. The unit lost an asset. The platoon lost a friend. As the furnace is turned on, there were shouts of grief.Up till this point do I find it a reality.
It's fruit-basket-turnover in our house this week as we turn Corrie's nursery into a "big girl room", and the boys (not wanting to miss out on the action) have decided this is the week to rearrange their rooms as well. And I, being in a winter rut and therefore eager for any excuse to rearrange furniture, have agreed. So our upstairs is a disaster: mattresses in the halls, toys pushed up against the walls, hang-up clothes stacked on beds...lovely. By now, you are probably wondering what happened with the pink things. Well, about a day after the Tall One took the first two away while she was cleaning the cage, another pink thing appeared. This time, though, neither Miss Prissy nor I felt like sitting on it. I didn't, because I'd tried it a couple of times and it was very boring. Miss Prissy kind of surprised me, though, because she usually acts like the pink things are the most important things in the world. Maybe it's because the cage looks different, or because the heat in the apartment has been fluctuating due to the cold, cold weather outside, but when it comes down to it, I don't really care. The thing is just at the bottom of the cage, Miss Prissy, the Tall One, and I all ignore it, and no new ones have appeared. I hope this is it for a while where pink things are concerned.
