      TC Forecast: Defensive End
All six defensive linemen return from last year's team, but a pair of sophomores could prompt the Chargers to keep a seventh. Andre Coleman and Keith Grennen spent last season on the practice squad and now fight for active duty. Coleman’s technique has greatly improved, but Grennan’s work ethic creates a battle to watch.

Defensive Tackles at the 2008 NFL Scouting Combine
Image: DT Dre Moore, MarylandI will be the first to tell you that the 40 time isn’t that important for a 300 pound defensive lineman, how often do they actually run 40 yards? Not often, but they do often run 10 and 20 yards and most of the players that have good 40 times also have very good 10 and 20 yard splits. If you also look at the positional drills, height, weight, vertical jump, long jump and bench press, you can get an idea of how strong and explosive these prospects are.Unfortunately the big dog Glenn Dorsey didn’t work out, still (supposedly) suffering from a hairline fracture of the tibia that he initialy injured in the summer of 2006. Don’t look for this to lower his draft status much; he still played in every game for LSU in 2007. Dorsey weighed in at a smallish 6’ 1

Here are some of my observations.Vernon Gholston from Ohio State was a man among boys. Not only did he look the part weighing in at 6’ 3” 266 pounds, but he was solid muscle. Gholston is as strong as an ox lifting 225 pounds 37 times, which was the best performance at the combine, actually tying 313 pound offensive tackle Jake Long for first place. Ratliff's return will provide defensive boost
About a month ago, I penned a post wondering where A.J. Ratliff would fit in the Indiana rotation. Since that time, we’ve watched the guards on this team struggle with their perimeter defense. At times I would characterize our perimeter defense as terrible (see the first half of the Chattanooga game). At best, judging it as an entire body of work, it’s been average. Enter A.J. Ratliff. While he’s primarily a streaky shooter on the offensive side of the ball, he’s probably the best perimeter defender that Indiana has on its roster. And he’ll return (assuming his grades come in as expected) this Saturday against Western Carolina. We’ve already seen enough of offense from this team to know they’ll be able to put up the points to win games. The Hoosiers don’t need Ratliff for his offense. They need his senior leadership and his tenacity on defense. Two seasons ago, he held Adam Morrison to 5 of 17 shooting in IU’s second round NCAA Tour

US on defensive at climate conference after Australian defection and Senate warming vote
First Australia won international applause for abandoning the United States and signing a global warming pact Washington has long opposed. Then a U.S. Senate committee voted for deep cuts in greenhouse gas emissions. The position of U.S. President George W. Bush's administration, that technology, private investment and economic growth — rather than mandatory emissions cuts — will save the planet from global warming, is taking a beating this week at a U.N. climate change conference in Indonesia. The public defeats for the U.S. stance, coupled with mounting warnings from scientists and others that only decisive action will control rising temperatures, have cast the Americans as wayward sons who need to wake up and join the rest of the world. "I think the United States will be judicious enough to accept the changes of atmosphere," said Indonesian Environment Minister Rachmat Witoelar, the host of the conference. Defensive Blunders Cost Club America First Leg Of Copa Sudamericana Final
Uncharacteristically sloppy defending cost Club America a game they couldn't afford to lose, as Arsenal de Sarandi stormed back twice from a goal down to take the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana final at Estadio Azteca. Lapses of various types played central roles in all three Arsenal goals, with America's normally standout goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa even doing his part on the first. Ochoa stuck to his line on a cross and was then left no chance on Anibal Matellan's header. The highlight of the game was unquestionably a Golazo by America midfielder Alejandro Arguello shortly after halftime. Arguello's brilliant strike into the upper 90 was truly something to behold and I will suggest scouring the Web to find a clip. I'll actually do so myself and update this post with the link.America drew blood first after only five minutes and appeared in firm control of the game for about 20 minutes. Texas Supreme Court Justice David Medina, a Republican, is clearly on the defensive and dodging suspicion after a fire that destroyed his Houston home was declared arson: The district attorney won’t comment on whether Medina is a suspect in the June fire that destroyed his $309,000 home. But Medina’s attorney denies he had involvement, pointing out the Medina’s had let their homeowners insurance policy lapse, meaning losses from the fire weren’t covered. “If you burn down your house intentionally, you would make sure you would profit from it financially or cover any damages you would incur,” attorney Terry W. Yates said. Medina, 49, and his wife, Francisca, have testified before a grand jury, which is deciding whether charges will be filed in the case. Authorities last month disclosed that the fire was set intentionally, and also some troubling aspect’s of Medina’s financial history that included an attempt to foreclose on their home beca

Defensive TD’s key Cardinals win over Bengals 35-27
Typically when the Arizona Cardinals win, it is usually a result of the offensive side of the ball. Not this weekend; cornerback Antrel Rolle’s three interceptions, 2 returned for touchdowns, were the key in Arizona’s win over the Cincinnati Bengals 35-27 at a shell-shocked Paul Brown Stadium. In the first quarter, both teams scored a TD each; Arizona on Rolle’s first of 3 interceptions, and Cincinnati on a nifty 19-yard pass from quarterback Carson Palmer to wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh, knotting the score at 7. Bengals kicker Shayne Graham would kick 2 field goals in the second quarter, sandwiching a Warner-to-Anquan Boldin 44-yard TD pass, making the score 14-13 Arizona. Another Warner TD pass, this one a 5-yarder to WR Larry Fitzgerald, enabled the Cardinals to take a 21-13 halftime lead. At 12:59 of the 3rd quarter, Arizona RB Edgerrin James would score a TD from 3 yards out, extending the Cards’ lead to 28-13, but Cincinnati would score twice in

Cole: NFC Defensive Player Of The Week
Perched at right defensive end, Trent Cole donned his weekly green and white camouflage and set his sights on the Vikings during the Eagles' 23-16 victory over Minnesota, where he recorded a career-high 13 tackles, including his league-leading ninth sack of the season, also a career-high.Cole's performance earned him the NFC Defensive Player of the Week Award for the first time in his career. Cole is the first Eagle to win the award since Brian Dawkins last December after the Eagles' 36-22 win over the Giants."He's tough right now, tough to stop," head coach Andy Reid said. "He plays relentless football, he was in for every snap in that game … He gives his 110 percent on every snap and players respect him for that, his teammates too."Only in his third year as an Eagle, Cole has a sack in five of the last seven games and is on track to finish the season with 20.5 sacks which has put teams league-wide on notice. The attention is not recent, though. Prior to this year, Green Bay Pac

      Rhodes Addressing The Defensive Play
Kerry Rhodes addressed the defensive play for this season after the Jets game on Sunday. Rhodes on the Jets defense through six games… “At this point we’re not where we should be. Like I said we play in spurts, but spurts aren’t good enough in this league. There are too many good players in this league and too many good teams in this league to play well for half of the game or courses of the game and expect to win. We can say what we want. We can say we have a good team. We can say we have good players, which we do. Our record is 1-5 and that’s not good.” The Jets rank 27th in the NFL in defending the pass and 23rd in the NFL in defending the run. …Well, the Jets had a better game defensively this past Sunday than in past weeks. Although, they did give up just under 300 yards in the air and 150+ yards on the ground, they were able to come up with 3 sacks and an interception by Hank Poteat and held the Eagles to just 16 points. Last week, the

      Defensive Driving: My First Ticket
I got my very first speeding ticket this week.  I simply didn’t realize I was in an active school zone.  It was the furthest thing from my mind at that time.  I saw the sign as I drove in but 30 minutes and a vet appointment later I forgot about it.  With no schools/children in sight it never occurred to me.  I just wasn’t paying attention which isn’t like me.  I had just left my 14 year old kitty at the vet for major surgery and got pulled over less than a minute down the road.  I literally had just turned out of the vet’s parking lot.  I honestly had no idea I was in a school zone.  I’ll probably be mumbling that all week. The officer had already written the ticket and wasn’t going to consider a warning despite my clean history.   So now I get the pleasure of paying a hefty fine and taking defensive driving to keep it off my record.  We were lucky that we got a bonus recently so we will use part of that money to cover this fin

Arsenal will be without William Gallas, Emmanuel Eboue and Jens Lehmann who are all out through various injuries as well as Philippe Senderos, who will serve a one-match ban for his red card against Portsmouth. However, manager Arsene Wenger revealed that Sagna will be available for the game after recovering from a back injury suffered in the league match against Manchester City. “Bacary Sagna is available again. He still has some pain but he should be OK if needed. However we won’t have William Gallas available because it is too early for him. Emmanuel Eboue is still out too. He has not recovered from his ankle injury. Jens Lehmann pulled out of the second German game. His elbow has blown up, it is bad bruising so we have to be patient with him.” I don’t know about you but the words ‘he should be OK if needed&rsq

Why Should You Enroll In A Defensive Driving Course?
Whether you are a teenager who is getting ready to hit the open road, or a seasoned veteran of the highways and byways, it is a wise idea to take a defensive driving course. Driving courses that are designed to teach defensive driving are gaining in popularity as cases of road rage increase in number.Another reason to take a course of this nature is to reduce auto insurance rates. Most insurance companies offer a discount for taking and completing a driving course. The amount of the discount varies among insurance companies, but will be between 2-10% on average. Call your personal auto insurance agent for the amount you could save.Cost may also be a concern when choosing which type of course to take. A traditional course is generally more expensive then the other types that are available. However, they do have the distinct advantage of a teacher and classmates to ask questions to and receive answers from. If cost is a prohibitive factor in joining a classroom course, then a corresponde

      Bangladesh's Defensive Style Worry India
Bangladesh might have lost 0-2 in their opening match of the Nehru Cup International Football Tournament to title favourites Syria but their defensive approach is a matter of concern for India ahead of their encounter here Monday.India captain Bhaichung Bhutia is apprehensive that it would be difficult for the hosts to score goals if the neighbours play a defensive game.'Bangladesh played good defensive football in the first half against Syria. And if they continue playing the same game against us for the full 90 minutes then it would be really difficult for us to score goals,' said Bhutia, after the team's practice session at Janaki Devi Memorial College Sunday evening.'They had seven players playing in the defence against Syria.'Last time the two teams met was in the final of the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Cup in Pakistan, where India defeated Bangladesh 2-0 to lift the trophy. It was under Syed Nayeemuddin's guidance that India won the tournament. Football - Defensive Strategy
By Michael Russell Bill Belichick is said to be one of the greatest defensive strategists of the modern era. While we're not going to pick apart Bill's game plan to try to figure out why he's so good at what he does, we are going to take a very basic look at defensive strategy and how to make your defense as effective as possible.Unlike the offense, which essentially dictates how the play is going to go down, the defense is more reactionary, not that it can't take an aggressive stance. We'll get into that later. But for the most part, the defense has to react and react quickly to what the offense is doing. A split second can mean the difference between a stop and a score. The offense basically has only two play options if you simplify this game. They are pass and run. Depending on which one the offense chooses, the defense must react accordingly. Most pass plays are pretty obvious. The quarterback will take the ball from center and drop back in the pocket about 2 or 3 yards to pass.

Beast, Arsene And Adopting A Defensive Tone.
Julio Baptista has finally confirmed what everyone expected in that he is back to Madrid, partly I suspect because Reyes is apparently not staying at Real but mainly because he could not justify a €20m fee, such is the rumoured value that has been placed on his head, For whatever reason, it just did not happen for the lad; only the really picky could fault his effort but he never really threatened to hit the expectation levels of supporters - is that our fault or his? - because aside from the six goals in the games against Liverpool and Tottenham, you have to say that four in thirty three matches is really not good enough. It would have been interesting to see what a second season would have produced but unfortunately for him, the club is at a stage where we cannot afford to carry passengers, especially those that represent a huge investment. Had he joined two summers ago, would things have been different? Perhaps, for a season at Madrid undoubtedly did little good for his confidence

About Time They Take Defensive Driving Seriously
Our Road Transport Department announced yesterday of the new curriculum they are implementing at the end of the year. I think this move is both welcome and long overdue in a bid to lower road accidents and fatalities. More importantly its about building a civic conscious society where people look after each other's safety interests.Back in 2004, Malaysia was ranked at a daunting 48th in the International Road Accident Fatality Statistics which safest countries were lead by Malta, Netherlands and Sweden respectively. With 21 Per Capita Death Rate to our name is truly a scary thought as compared to the ranked 4th, United Kingdom which has a population of nearly tripled of ours standing at a mere 5.3 Per Capita Death Rate. This goes to show there are plenty of room for improvement.Director-general Prof Radin Umar Radin Sohadi of Malaysia Institute for Road Safety Research shared that the goal was to reduce accident rates by as much as 50% within five to 10 years. Defensive Jacket
The No-Contact Jacket is a wearable defensive jacket created to aid women in their struggle for protection from violence. When activatedby the wearer, 80,000 volts of low amperage electric current pulses just below the surface shell of the entire jacket. This exo-electricarmor prevents any person from unauthorized contact with the wearer's body. If an assailant were to grab hold of the wearer the highvoltage exterior would interrupt their neurological impulses which control voluntary muscle movement. The neuromuscularsystem would be overwhelmed causing disorientation and loss of balance to occur and of course pain. The pain experienced is non-lethalbut is enough to effectively and immediately deter contact with the wearer and provide a critical life saving oppurtunity for escape.Be careful!Sorce & Image:No-contact

Defensive Linemen at the 2007 NFL Combine
The Defensive linemen and Ends finished their workouts on Monday at the 2007 NFL Combine and the results are just now coming in. Here is an early look at which players hepled or hurt their draft stock.Helped:Talk about a workout warrior, Brian Robinson from Texas came to the combine in great shape. Only 6' 3" 259 pounds, but he has huge thighs and is very explosive. He will probably be converted to outside linebacker in the NFL, but he put up some great numbers at the 2007 NFL Scouting Combine. He ran a 4.67 forty yard dash, 6.89 second 3-cone drill, 4.26 second 20 yard shuttle time and an amazing 40.50 inch vertical jump.Adam Carriker from Nebraska also put on quite a show, at 6' 6" 296 pounds, he had an excellent 4.87 second 40 yard dash, 7.06 second 3-cone drill, 33.5 vertical jump, but what was really amazing was his 4.18 second 20 yard shuttle run time. 300 pounders just don't move that fast.Gaines Adams from Clemson was the other top star, he blazed a 4.69 second 40 yard dash

      Fresno State's Defensive Gems
As we all recall the Fresno State Bulldogs defense in 2006 lacked many components needed to be successful. The most glaring need for Fresno State was that of speed. While players like McCauley ran relatively quick forty times he was forced to do far too much on his own which led to numerous breakdowns in coverage. If Fresno State can hold on to the recruits that are supposed to sign today the defense in the next two years will see a vast improvement with respect to both speed and talent. Fresno State had to address the issue of talent on the defensive side of the ball and it looks like they have done everything in their power to make this happen. With the addition of players such as Jermaine Thomas, Chris Carter, Tim Lang, and Sharrod Davis the Bulldogs defense should be much more athletic and that much faster in the end. Although he was not a recruit from the 2007 class Lorne Bell should be able to step in this upcoming season and make a name for himself as well. Chris Carter

      Fresno State Defensive Recruiting Grades
Fresno State Recruit Ken Borg If anything became apparent during the 2006 season at Fresno State it was the Bulldogs did not possess the speed on defense to compete in games against teams such as Hawaii, Boise State, or LSU. More often than not the Bulldogs defensive secondary could be seen chasing a RB, WR, or TE down the field due to the lack of speed on defense. Although Marcus McCauley came into the season as one of the more highly touted CB's at Fresno State he would deal with so much pressure that it eventually took its toll on the young man. McCauley was counted on to do far too much during the 2006 season and in the end could not compensate for all of the inexperience in the secondary. While Josh Shirley could hit he always seemed to arrive one second too late. We all know the story of Vincent Mays and how he did not pan out. Elgin Simmons never seemed to grasp the corner position like the Dogs had hoped. The only bright spot in the secondary came with Damon Jenkins, but even
