Buy rare Deerhunter, Black Lips, Jay Reatard, share in searing pain of regret
[He played in Deerhunter and all he got was this box of old records.] We once got excited because we found Bradford Cox’s ebay account. It wasn’t a slow day, we just really like Bradford Cox and ebay. This doesn’t quite top that moment, but we take what we get: From an ebay account: my name is paul [...]

Listen: Original Bradford Cox song made way to new Deerhunter album
[Art and track list for Ben Eberbaugh: A Rockin’ Tribute] With the leak of Deerhunter’s Microcastle, Allen Roizman has sent us some old Bradford Cox gems from back in the day, (slightly prior to when Deerhunter became Trent Reznor’s touring buddy), at least one of which is a precursor tracks to a song on the new [...]

      Deerhunter Market Hotel, Bushwick BK
Words by Andrew Rozas Photos by Nate Dorr Friday’s Deerhunter show was initially listed as Atlas Sound with “secret longtime buds band.” Tickets were only available for purchase at Cinders Gallery in Brooklyn, and the location was to be emailed to ticket holders the night of the performance. The mystique surrounding the show provoked elaborate possibilities of [...]

Arranged in chronological sequence from two distinct recording sessions, Cryptograms is alternately murky and ethereal, amorphous and incisive, shot through with Sonic Youth guitar

      Deerhunter - Cryptograms
Deerhunter's artsy second full-length record is about contrast; dissonant but melodic, loud and bold yet dreamy and peaceful. Like Spiritualized on a bad trip, the first half is noisy, moody, and mostly instrumental except for Bradford Cox's occasional, heavily distorted sing-talking. But it shifts gears on "Spring Hall Convert" when the music lightens into lo-fi shoegazer pop. Elsewhere you'll find clanging punk, drone rock, and minimalist psychedelia. Sounds like a disjointed experience, right? Well, yeah, it is somewhat, but stay with it. After a few listens you'll hear the consistent sonic smarts that unify the record's wandering tone. The title track for instance comes off like watered-down Joy Division until the feedback kicks in, and the giant guitar blare sets off a charging momentum. A song like "Hazel St." has a goofier appeal, with its slightly awkward intro and loopy melodies. But there's nothing awkward about how the song generously unfolds so that by the end, the on

Black Lips, Deerhunter, Manchester Orchestra, Snowden in heelarious/awesome MTV News sequence
“Raising Hell in the ATL!” Bradford Cox: “There’s not an Atlanta sound, if it was, it’d just be dirty” Ignore John Norris’ CNN newsspeak voice and the frequent comments about Atlanta’s “cultural mash ups” and “mish-mashes” coupled with images of black and white people standing next to each other at shows, and this news piece is sort of a service to MTV’s regular landscape.
