      Debris, Garbage and Rubbish
This week's posting is not about cute, cuddly or other interesting bits of wildlife. This is the natural history of waste. While filming in waters off the Philippine island of Cebu, the crew encountered a typhoon, a common enough experience for that part of the world, and in itself not very remarkable perhaps. Though it did create some interesting rain drops on sea water effects, as you can see from this still image taken from the film. No, the point of interest in this week's posting lies with the amount of debris which the winds and currents churned up, to produce a long slick of flotsam and jetsam. What astonishes me is the sheer amount of true debris, garbage, and rubbish that you can see, hidden amongst the uprooted and broken bits of seaweed. Most obvious is plastic, plus other unident

      Misc. Debris
So here's what's coming up that y'all might be interested in checking out.Slim Cessna's new album, Cipher, is coming out on March 25th. You can download a couple of songs from their website here. From what I've heard, it's vintage Slim Cessna, which means it is damn good! The Rocket from the Crypt R.I.P. CD/DVD is out and available. I ordered mine yesterday and am anxiously waiting it's arrival. The Night Marchers release has been moved back to April 22nd, but keep your eyes out for them because they are touring. And of course, if you haven't bought it, or ordered it, there is Dig, Lazarus, Dig! I got my copy and it is a must have. Many reviews are already calling it the album of 2008, which ain't bad considering it is only March.

The Veils are playing in LA tonight and tomorrow. Wish like hell I could check 'em out but with a 3 week old and the drive to LA it ain't going to happen. Tonight they are guest DJing after the show, so if you're in the Socal area - go see them!Just heard that The Pogues are playing in October. Isn't breaking news, I've just been out of the loop. $62.50 per ticket for Anaheim House of Blues, plus $10 service charge, plus venue charge, and my personal favorite - a $2.50 charge to print out the tickets on your own computer, using your own paper and your own ink. God I hate Ticketmaster. I also got this notice from Gallon Drunk's myspace page: NEW GALLON DRUNK LP, "THE ROTTEN MILE" TO BE RELEASED IN OCTOBER ON FRED (LABEL) RECORDS.UPCOMING NEW SINGLE "GRAND UNION CANAL" TO BE RELEASED IN 7" AND CD FORMAT, BOTH WITH DIFFERENT EXCLUSIVE TRACKS.TOUR AND RELEASE DATES TO FOLLOW.That should be sweet! Finally - Alabama 3 will release a new single on the 20th called Lockdown and will donate

      Aztec factory fire debris
First, I will apologise for the number of posts and photos about Monday's fire at Aztec Chemicals factory. That said, you only have to look at the number of search queries (from all over the world) to realise that people want info and pictures. And I try to post what people are interested in. It was a strange day. Some of the images to be put out on Tuesday and Wednesday were incredible and highlighted the intensity of the fire and the heat generated in and around the Aztec factory. I hope that the company can, as reported, find new premises and get themselves (and its employees) up and running as soon as possible. I also hope that none of the nearby businesses have suffered too much. The last thing we want is to see Crewe workers and their families suffering. Good luck to them all...

Sioux City, Iowa receives settlement in asbestos debris case
Sioux City, Iowa has received a $7,500 settlement from Wisconsin-based Old Republic Surety Company for asbestos-containing rubble resulting from the demolition of part of the Livestock Exchange Building. The pile of asbestos debris was discovered in 2004 when the rest of the building was demolished. The pile has been covered and fenced since 2004, and the city is awaiting EPA approval for a cleanup plan, which is estimated to cost $500,000. The company responsible for the debris is out of business with no assets to pursue; the settlement was paid with bond monies the company was required to carry to insure the work. For the full story, go to www.siouxcityjournal.com.
