Installing an all in one printer device in Debian (Lenny)
Recently I had cause to buy a scanner. Being in a reasonably small home I was eager to save on desk-space, and so decided to upgrade my ageing inkjet printer at the same time. Having looked around I eventually went for an HP Photosmart C5180 device. This is my experience of installing it on Debian Lenny .

HOWTO: Configure nginx for Debian / Ubuntu
I’m always trying new software, and with the webserver I’ve moved from Apache 1.3 to 2.0 to 2.2, and then later I moved everything over to Lighttpd, which I’ve liked, save for some memory issues that popped up.  Now, enter a web server named nginx (engine x), written by a Russian hacker.

Debian Lenny: new kernel, new problem, plus the best distros for the Alps touchpad, FreeBSD vs. OpenBSD, and laptop surgery
The Linux kernel is a funny thing. A new kernel should mean increased functionality, but for me and my old-and-getting-older machines, I only seem to lose functionality with upgraded kernels. I hadn't updated Debian Lenny in a while on the $0 Laptop (the Gateway Solo 1450), and when I did it today, I noticed a new kernel being added to the system: 2.6.24-1. I didn't think about the new kernel when I next booted into Lenny, but when I did, I soon discovered that my sound card didn't work anymore. I looked at all the settings, tweaked a bit here and there, but still nothing.

The Debian server — a non-expert tries to roll his own
I decided to start from scratch with my Debian server project. Last time I was too hasty in adding the open-source version of Movable Type to my installation and intermingling files before I was ready. This time I'm going to be a lot more methodical and make sure that Apache and MySQL are working properly -- meaning I can run CGI scripts and have a directory dedicated to same -- before I start with Movable Type. I could've removed Apache, done some cleanup and gone from there, but since I didn't have much "invested" in the install, I wiped the drive and started over.

      Debian 5.0 Se llamara "Lenny"

      Linux 2.6.24-rc1-git8 on Debian unstable
Since very early on in my professional career I have been afforded the luxury of running Linux exclusively on my own hardware, and most of my administration experience and programming work has been primarily done with Linux or Unix like operating systems. Having dabbled in maybe a dozen or so systems, and supporting several as a part of work duties, I just really like the way Linux runs. My Linux work environment is fine tuned to the Nth degree of precision, though it does take the occasional fiddling to keep all the ants marching in the same direction. These days I have settled into a happy symbiosis with Debian unstable. Possibly because I am a micro-managing control freak, or possibly because I am the kind of person who finds patching, configuration, and compiling a new kernel fun, I keep apt away from the kernel bits and build my own from kernel.org source.

Forwarding a specific port in Debian
I’m writing this tutorial to help other that may have the same problem I had. Let me explain to you: I have a Debian server called debian1 which has external ip 1.1.1.1 on eth0 and a local ip 192.168.1.1 on eth0:1, and a second Debian server called debian2 which only has 192.168.1.2 local ip on eth0. I need to access debian2 with ssh from the internet. I cant do that directly because debian2 does not have an external ip address to connect to the internet. But we can use a port forwarding rule on debian1 so that I can access debian2 trough debian1 on a specific port. The only command you have to use is:   iptables -A PREROUTING -t nat -p tcp -i eth0 –dport 88 -j DNAT –to 192.168.1.2:22 after entering this command debian1 will forward any request on port 88 from eth0 to 192.168.1.2 on port 22. Now all I have to do is to enter 1.1.1.1 port 88 in putty and I can log-in to debian2 trough ssh. That’s it short and simple about port forwarding.

How to set the mac address from /etc/network/interfaces in Debian
This is an update to a previous post regarding the change of mac address in Debian. In the previous tutorial I told you can change it by ifconfig from a root account. Now I’m going to teach you how to set an interface mac address using /etc/network/interfaces . This is a better way to set your mac address because the mac you set in /etc/network/interfaces will always load when the interfaces are loaded so you don’t have to worry about the mac after reboot for example. Let’s start by looking at my /etc/network/interfaces it looks like this:   #This file describes the network interfaces available on your system # and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5). # The loopback network interface auto lo iface lo inet loopback # The primary network interface auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 1.1.1.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 1.1.1.255 broadcast 1.1.1.255 gateway 1.1.1.1 dns-nameservers 1.1.1.1 dns-search .com hwaddress ether 00:01:04:1

How to set your date and time in Debian
It could happen to anyone to have problems with date and time. For example I had a problem a few day’s ago with an older server of mine which has problems with hardware time, it resets everytime I disconnect it from power. Its something to do with the motherboard I changed the battery but that didn’t solved the problem. That’s why sometimes I need to correct its date with the following method:   date –set 2007-10-15 to set yyyy-mm-dd date –set 16:47:30 to set hh-mm-ss hwclock –systohc to sync hardware clock to what we introduced earlier     At least from Debian version 2.2 onwards, the system automatically saves the system time to hardware clock on shutdown, and sets the system clock from hardware clock when Debian boots up. This is done in the script /etc/init.d/hwclock.sh.     Another thing you might ran into is changing the timezone. If the timezone is not set or is wrong, log in as superuser and run tzconfig to configure the timezone

Install SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) on Debian
In this tutorial I’m going to teach you how to install SNMP on Debian and configure it for local or remote use. Simple Network Management Protocol is a widely used protocol for monitoring the health and welfare of network equipment, computer equipment and even devices like UPS’s. Net-SNMP is a suite of applications used to implement SNMP v1, SNMP v2c and SNMP v3 using both IPv4 and IPv6. In my case I’m using snmp to monitor the status of my servers, both linux and windows. I use Cacti to graph all this information. (I will cover cacti installation on Debian in a future post). For the method described below I’m using apt for installing snmp, so before you start this you should configure apt and add some http or ftp sources into your /etc/apt/sources.list or if you have your installation dvd/cd you can use that. Let’s get started: We need to install snmpd package using the following command: apt-get install snmpd     That’s it snmpd is installed, now we

How to change the MAC address in Linux (Debian)
Although the physical MAC address is permanent by design and is assigned to your network card by factory several mechanisms allow the modification, or spoofing of the MAC address that is reported by the operating system. This can be useful if you want to keep your privacy or to ensure interoperability. Some internet service providers bind their service to a specific MAC address; if you change your network card or intend to install a router the service won’t work anymore. Changing the MAC address of the new interface will solve the problem.     Under Linux the MAC address of a network card can be changed by doing the following under a root account. /etc/init.d/networking stop ifconfig eth0 hw ether 02:01:02:03:04:08 /etc/init.d/networking start ” 02:01:02:03:04:08” being the new assigned mac.     Under Fedora Core 5, and possibly in other Linux distributions, to disable and restart networking, you must stop and start /etc/init.d/network, instead of /etc/init.d/network

Well, Debian turned 14 on the 16th of August. That takes some thinking about. Although the number of Linux users has increased greatly in the past few years, it’s easy to forget how old the technology actually is (in relative terms). The Linux kernel we so love was Linus Torvald’s brainchild and has it’s own birthday on 17 September when it turns sweet 16. Take a look at the original announcement of the release of Debian, dated 16th August 1993: Original Announcement. Do you know how Debian was named? Well, the founder, Ian Murdock, combined the first name of his girlfriend, Deborah, with his own - hence, Debian. That also tells us how to pronounce Debian - I have heard many variants with ‘Deeebian’ being the most popular but take the two names and there you have it: Deb(orah)Ian. How to install Zabbix - The Ultimate Monitoring Solution on debian based system
I had a good day today. I always looked around for good monitoring software and I strongly believe that I have just found it. It holds great name - Zabbix. With Zabbix, you can monitor multiple servers at a time, using a Zabbix server that comes with a web interface (that is used to configure Zabbix and holds the graphs of your systems) and Zabbix agents that are installed on the systems to be monitored. The Zabbix agents deliver the desired data to the Zabbix server. I will try to write simple tutorial about how to install this excellent peace of software on any debian based linux - in my case I have successfully installed in on my Sidux box. KDE Desktop Sharing how-to in Debian
Today I wanted to try something different and because a friend of mine has asked me to sort his windows so he will be able to connect from his laptop to his PC remotely, I wanted to do the same in linux. Under windows (XP) it is quite easy, just check allow remote connections in my computer properties and off you go. So how does linux compare? I would say, it is almost the same. First you need to make sure you have krfb installed. Let me explain: KDE Desktop Sharing, also known as krfb, is a service based on the RFB protocol, that allows you to share your desktop with other users. For example, you can show your desktop to an administrator to fix problems on your computer. You have the full control of access to your desktop; nobody can see it without your explicit permission. KDE Desktop Sharing is compatible with all regular VNC / RFB clients, including vncviewer. (more…)
