Umar Naseer and the debate on apostasy…
It is long known that Maldivians in general have a special place in their hearts for Islam, ever since the nation reverted to Islam some 800 years ago. It is also true that due to this very fact, various politicians have misused Islam to gain political benefit at various stages of their political endeavours. As such we are at the moment seeing such an (apparent?) attempt being made by one of the

Conflicts Abound In The Vaccine Debate - Is Your Child Safe From The Scoundrels Of Medicine?

Imagine being the parent (and there are many!) who watched their child's fast retreat into silence and disability following a round of vaccinations upon hearing this incomprehensible dismissal!Should all parents of children, believed to be vaccine damaged, accept that this remarkable timing is a mere coincidence? The Debate on Security Metrics
Recently I was sitting on a panel which was pretty heterogeneous: There was a representative from IBM (actually from former ISS), customers, a representative from the Open Source community (who actually, during his presentation always said how bad our security is) – well, and me. In order to have some fun, the moderator wanted to bring some fire in the discussion and said: We often hear people saying that Open Source is more secure than your software model, what do you have to say on this? Well, there were so many different themes on the table which were – in my opinion – more interesting to discuss than a debate on Open Source vs. Microsoft, I actually did not want to go down that road. So, I asked the moderator back: Could you please elaborate a little bit what you mean by "more se

The Hills Debate: Team Audrina or Team Lo?
Posted on May 7th, 2008 2:55 pmEver since Lauren Bosworth (Lo) moved in with Lauren Conrad (LC) and her friend Audrina Patridge, things haven’t been free of drama at Casa Conrad. Audrina, who lives in the guest house while Lo and LC reside in the main residence of her Hollywood villa, is clearly feeling ostracized lately. Why? On Monday’s episode of The Hills, Lauren Conrad wanted to hang with Audrina at the recording studio where she works, but two seconds after they got there, Lo insisted they bail and go to dinner - sans Audrina - and so they did. Many awkward moments and passive-aggressive comments from Lo soon followed - such as stating that their new puppy has TWO moms. Is she overprotective of Conrad? Jealous of Patridge? Are either or both out of line?Tell us, which side ar

GREEN CONSERVATISM: The mechanism for conservatives to be relevant in the environmental debate
Recently I read an article by Whit Ayres: “Let’s Get Right into the Debate.” Basically, the article polarizes or politicizes environmentalism and champions green conservatism while demonizing liberal environmentalism. Personally, I believe it is dangerous to politicize environmentalism because environmentalism at its core is not to be politicized. Politicization demands benefit to politics or a political ideology or system and not towards the environment or Nature. Of course, there is political ecology but political ecology focuses on how behaviors of individuals living within a political system influence environmental issues and the landscape.I also believe that green conservatives are stealing elements of environmentalism like market-based mechanisms and making them their own.

In short, the debate sponsored by ABC-TV was wacky -- off the wall. Why? The farce, labeled a debate, provided no useful information to the voter in the first 45 minutes and what came after was awfully inadequate. It was more about drama -- "I got you" moments than providing substance. In a year when voters clearly are seeking answers to their political concerns and are in record numbers participating in the primaries, days before the Pennsylvania primary we see a whole community of voters, dissed-- politically disrespected. Another Debate; Another Waste of Our Time
I'm just about a couple hours or so removed from just watching one of the most uninformative, and boring debates of this election cycle on ABC. There's really not a whole lot to add to that. The first hour of the debate featured mostly tabloidesqe type questions, and while answering Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama looked like they accidentally drank a bottle of NyQuil. This disaster was created by moderators George Stephanopoulous and Charles Gibson, and believe me they will hear that from everyone. I didn't like almost all of the recent debates because quite frankly none of them brought any new ideas to the table. I find that these debates are more meant for the American that has been living in a shell and not paying attention. These Hillary vs Obama debates are tough to watch be

Pennsylvania Debate Focuses Little on the Issues
Wednesday night’s debate in Pennsylvania featured questions about some of the most controversial statements and potentially damaging campaign supporters. Clinton tried to explain the difference between being received in Bosnia with sniper fire and being welcomed by a crowd featuring a small child with flowers in hand. Senator Clinton admitted that she lied when it came to Bosnia and asked voters to try and “look over” the issue. “I may be a lot of things, but I’m not dumb. On a couple of occasions in the last weeks, I just said some things that were not in keeping with what I knew to be the case.” “I’m embarrassed by it. I apologized for it. I said it was a mistake,” she added. I wonder if she realizes that in that statement she said that she’s not dumb, she

      Worst.Dem.Debate.Ever.
While there's no doubt that ABC's Charles Gibson and George Stephanopoulos seemed to be auditioning for jobs as TMZ-like Spanish inquisitors, spending almost the entire first hour of the Dem debate tag-teaming questions about almost all of the scandals du jour (Wright, Ayers, Bosnia, Bittergate, the flag pin flap etc.) instead of focusing on policy issues, there's no denying that Barack Obama lost tonite. His "hope" and "change" message seemed to have been left in his wallet in another pair of pants. Under fire from all three fronts, he struggled to fight back and did so at times using the same kind of "old politics" that he so decries ie. attack with nasty talking points when you're attacked. That style of campaigning has increased during this Pennsylvania stint of his run as he tries to l

      Philadelphia Clinton-Obama debate analysis/ commentary part 2
ABC interrupted the radio broadcast of the debate with a Dodger game. Well, I don't have cable and ABC didn't stream the debate so I couldn't finish it. Yip...I mean, I was very disappointed. Still, I can safely say that I've haven't seen as many lies per minute since the question and answer portion of the Miss Chastity pageant. What's really surprising is that Obama actually lied more than accomplished fibber Hillary Clinton. Dumb, easy to debunk ones too like his lie about handguns. And, as mentioned on the corner, Obama would prefer to raise taxes than increase tax revenue. Gratuitous beauty pageant picture. This equality fetish reminds me of the question I always ask to illustrate the point: If you ask a liberal if he'd prefer that some people get 10% more of something while other

      Recap of the Pennsylvania Debate
I do have to apologize as I did not actually watch the debate thanks my DVR mysteriously not working, but nonetheless I did catch up on the main points through videos from ABC and YouTube. Well ladies and gentleman the 21st debate for the Dems was uneventful for the most part. This time the debate was hosted by ABC and moderated by Charles Gibson, and George Stephanopoulos. I wouldn't call this debate a "lovefest", but it wasn't really catty either. There were some humorous moments in the debate when Gibson had posed the question if each candidate would name the other as the VP candidate. Both of them smiled and appeared to not want to answer the question first. Obviously the usual response of it's too soon to speculate about VEEP candidates, but it clearly shows at how this primary co

      Philadelphia Clinton-Obama debate analysis/ commentary part 1
Wow! That was uncomfortable. Fifty minutes of dancing and lying around and about their recent whoppers, revealing gaffes, and radical friendships. So, if Hillary were president, she would have avoided the housing crisis. Well, you were a senator, Mrs. Clinton: Why didn't you bring it up? As far as Iraq: Saying that they'd leave Iraq no matter what, is irresponsible, and moderate people will see it as a promise to the left wing. Tom Coburn saying abortionists should be punished in a court of law is the same as terrorism? They did better on taxes. At least, I can see this "raise taxes on everybody except you" game as effective. The moderators are being relatively tough. I can't comment on every dumb idea and lie, however I'll come up with another one later. It's an interesting deba

'Bat debate' finally ended: Wood or Metal?
Watch for the "victim's" family to sue the police department for 'depriving their poor defenseless child' of 'life and liberty':"FRESNO, Calif. — A police officer shot and killed a 17-year-old high school student Wednesday after authorities said the teenager clubbed the officer with a baseball bat on the packed, urban campus. The officer fired at the student shortly before noon, after the Roosevelt High School sophomore allegedly came from behind and struck the officer in the head with a crude wooden baseball bat, Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said. The officer fell down dazed, and reached for the gun in his hip holster, but the clip fell out.As the student came at him a second time, the officer grabbed a secondary weapon — a semiautomatic handgun he carried as backup — from his ank

      Pennsylvania Democrat Debate
The Pennsylvania Democrat Debate is on tonight at 8pm on ABC. The stakes are very high for both candidates tonight and it will be interesting to see who will be taking the offensive. Expectations are high for Obama tonight coming off this weekends coverage of "bitter-gate", and he has to prove that this party is ready for him to have this nomination. Clinton has a score to settle, and she has to prove that this party isn't ready for Obama. Lets hope sparks fly and this is a very good debate and not a love fest between the two candidates.

Pulling enforcement of the Clean Air and the Endangered Species into the debate over climate change.
"Carbon Cap Scams ..pull enforcement of the Clean Air Act and the Endangered Species Act into the debate over climate change." Among the proposals floated by the administration at the meeting last week was one that would limit the emissions cap to electric power plants, while also allowing a "safety valve" if the cost is found to be too high. The Senate bill has no such escape valve and covers emissions almost across the economy. The administration views were presented by James Connaughton, chairman of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, and domestic policy adviser Keith Hennessey. Among those at the meeting were Rep. Roy Blunt of Missouri, the No. 2 House Republican; Rep. James Sensenbrenner of Wisconsin, the ranking Republican on the Select Committee on Energy In

The When Harry Met Sally Debate
The RedEye addressed this recently and figured that I should cover it here because it's definitely applicable to my life. Can men and women just be friends? Yes...sort of. One of my best friends is a guy. And being a single girl with a single guy friend is not always easy but it can work.My guy in question is not really a friend or a boyfriend. It's more like a "heterosexual life partner" or "life partner" as he calls it. It's like dating the guy without the boyfriend benefits. Now I won't lie here, I did at one time have a mini crush, or thought I did, on this guy. But when I met him about 2.5 years ago, we worked together. And after a bad past work/dating experience, I wasn't going to go there again. I would rather have him as my friend than nothing, especially if the dating thing did

Privacy and Internet Behavior Info Debate Continues-Even Among Marketers
We’re no closer to reconciling concerns about the use of online behavior data. Indeed, several things happened over the past week proving that marketers, controllers of Internet information, and consumers aren’t likely to agree any time soon on the use of online-behavior information. Because of concerns by both consumers and the government, the U.S. Federal Trade [...]

      Debate – Does God Exist?
By godsfavoritecolorI attended a formal debate a few days ago before an audience of about 200 on the question, “Does God Exist?” The representative for the negative was a college professor of philosophy. The representative for the positive was a pastor of a local fundamentalist Christian church. The pastor was a typical fundamentalist Bible thumper, a YEC (young earth creationist, yeeecchh!) and believes that everything in the Bible is literally true. His arguments were a compendium of logical fallacies, while he accused his opponent of using logical fallacies. Not surprisingly he compared atheists to Hitler, with the fallacious syllogism: Hitler was an atheist. Hitler killed millions of people. Therefore, all atheists are as evil as Hitler. Ignoring the fact that Hitler was not an

The "is Wang an ace" debate is over? I don't think so
Mark Feinsand and Tyler Kepner both wrote on their blogs today that Wang has answered all the questions about being an ace; well I don't think he has - at least not yet.Wang is usually criticized for not striking out enough batters and not being a good road pitcher. His K's are not a major concern of mine, last year his K/9 rate improved last year to 4.70, a career high, and I think it will get even better this season. On the other hand, his road numbers do concern me, and I feel that is the question he still needs to answer: Can he be the same pitcher on the road as he is at home? Here are his home and road splits:Career: Home - 2.97 ERA/Road - 4.49 ERA2007: Home - 2.75 ERA/Road - 4.91 ERA2006: Home - 3.03 ERA/Road - 4.35 ERA2005: Home - 3.55 ERA/Road - 4.65 ERAAt Yankee Stadium Wang has p

However, in a world faced with the threat of global warming, dwindling fossil fuel, continuous warfare, disease and starvation on the rise in Africa, spiraling food prices world wide, the candidates must focus on "solutions." Instead, they have chosen to attend "The Compassion Forum" with "wide ranging and probing discussion of policies related to moral issues." INCLUDING CANDIDATES THAT WILL DEBATE JESUS. Yikes.
