Spain's team ethos shone through as they won their third Davis Cup crown on a weekend of captivating drama in Mar del Plata. We've had a few disappointing finals recently - last year's between the US and Russia was pretty drab, while Russia against Argentina in 2006 never really got going. But this one delivered and the overriding memory for me will be the togetherness and sheer joy of the small nu

Last year Davis Cup finalist Russia is playing host to surging Serbia in the first round of World Group 2008. It started bad for Serbia as Novak Djokovic and Nenad Zimonjic fell down to stomach flu and it got worse after 2nd racket Janko Tipsarevic injured muscle on the training ground, thus...

British tennis star, Tim Henman will play his final Grand Slam at the U.S. Open and then retire in September after the Davis Cup playoff at the All England Club.
He is 32 and reached four Wimbledon semifinals and never won a Grand Slam title in his 14-year career, cited a sore back and bad knee Thursday for his decision call it quits.
Injuries have caught up with the 92nd-ranked Henman, who won 11 singles titles in his career and was ranked as high as No. 4 in 2002. He was sidelined three months at the start of the season with a knee injury and is 5-11 in singles matches.
Jamie Murray and Greg Rusedski did the job on Saturday with a superb win in the doubles - 6-1 3-6 6-3 7-6 (7-5).Very sad to see Rusedski retiring from tennis, but great to see Jamie Murray showing his ability to play on the big stage. I remember a while back, Andy Murray saying his brother was better at volleying at the net than he was, and I understand why. Jamie has great reflexes and a very useful two-handed back-hand.As I expected, Andy rested on the Sunday and gave Jamie the chance to play a singles in one of the dead rubbers against Haase. Jamie took the first set 6-4, but lost the next two 7-6 (7-0) 6-2.Tim Henman played the other match against Sijsling and won 6-2 6-3.Overall, GB win the tie 4-1 and will play a World Group playoff in September against either Romania, Croatia, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Belarus, Austria, Chile or Australia.Rusedski has kept playing in the Davis Cup, even when his ability to play on the tour has diminished. If Henman is willing to do the sa
Murray wins 6-3 7-5 6-2I hadn't realised how unsettling the Djokovic/Murray match had been until I felt the relief at watching Murray back to somewhere near his best.Murray has just taken the first set 6-3 by serving aces, chasing down drop-shots, producing cleverly disguised drop-shots of his own, volleying well at the net and finding some awesome back-hand winners down the line.Murray broke early and raced to a 3-0 lead. Sluiter found a break point at 3-1, but couldn't convert it and Murray served out comfortably.Great start. Some better play from Sluiter in the second set earned him some break points, but Murray was cool under pressure and held his serve. In the 11th game, Murray made the break and then served it out to take the second set 7-5.Credit to Sluiter for contributing to an entertaining match, but when the break came early in the third set, the end result was clear. Sluiter carved out some more break points, but couldn't convert and Murray broke again to take the final
Just in case there was any doubt, recent news reports have confirmed that Murray WAS injured before the Djokovic debacle.Murray was very sporting not to blame this for the result but, considering that only two weeks earlier in Indian Wells, he admitted it was a mistake to have played while injured, he would have looked a bit silly if he'd tried to excuse the performance. With hindsight it's easy to say that playing while injured was a mistake, but the lure of breaking into the top ten is a strong one and at the back of Murray's mind there must always be the thought that... anything could happen.Djokovic could have fallen and broken his ankle on the way out of the dressing room. Djokovic could have choked under the pressure and made the match a close one (remember that set Murray won against Monfils while injured?). More likely though, and of course what actually happened, was that Djokovic would win comfortably. So let's hope Murray breaks into the top ten soon, if for no other rea
Andy Murray & Jamie Delgado lost in straight sets to Orest Tereshchuk & Sergiy Stakhovsky: 6-3 6-3 6-3.But Murray sealed the win for GB by beating Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-3 6-2 7-5 on Sunday morning.Murray confessed to not being at his best and picked up a slight injury in the third set. Nonetheless, what impressed observers was the professionalism Murray displayed in winning his two singles matches.Playing away from home in a high pressure tie meant that the potential for upset was high. Yet Murray never looked in danger. Critics who question Murray's desire to play as a GB player should watch his performances in the Davis Cup and his elation at gaining the victory.I generally try to avoid discussing other tennis players in any details in this blog, but I must tip my hat to Rusedski who showed incredible determination to fight back from 2 sets to 1 down and 3-0 down in the fourth. That result may well have been the difference between victory and defeat for GB.The date for the ne
Murray and Dolgopolov had to wait over four hours for Rusedski to record a five set win over Stakhovsky (1-6 6-3 5-7 6-4 9-7), but their match was over far sooner as Murray romped to a 6-3 6-4 6-2 victory.
It only took a couple of games for Dolgopolov to demonstrate that, even at the age of 17, he had some serious game, but once Murray had the measure of the player the result never seemed in doubt - bar a minor scare at the beginning of the second set.
What was most entertaining about the match was listening to the BBC commentators positively gushing over Andy Murray's tennis prowess.
It seems that any questions over whether or not Murray is the real deal have finally been laid to rest as the commentators seemed to fall over themselves to find higher superlatives. "World Class" came out at one point and in another moment it was claimed that when it comes to Murray's performances "there's nothing he can't do".
The only sour note was when one of the commentators mentioned that Murr
Depressingly, this match is only to decide who gets relegated. Not prestigous, but most definitely important if the GB team is going to have some decent competition in future matches.
Play begins at the following UK times:
Friday (22/9/06): 7:30amSaturday *23/9/06): 8:30amSunday (23/9/06): 7:30am
The GB team is:
Andy Murray (16)Greg Rusedski (136)Jamie Baker (300)Jamie Delgado (494)
The Ukraine team is:
Sergiy Stakhovsky (188)Orest Tereshchuk (354)Oleksandr Dolgopolov (352)Sergei Bubka (461)
Ukraine have home advantage and have elected to play on a clay surface. Nevertheless, GB should be confident of two points from Andy Murray.
That means that if Rusedski can stay fit, he only needs to win one match to make certain of the victory.
The matches are being shown on BBC Interactive, so just remember to push the red button.
