When you look at the current unemployment rate of 5 percent, you would think that our economy would be humming along. Yet the way that they calculate the official unemployment rate is such a joke, you are almost left guessing how many people are really out of work. Data Mining: A Knowledge Discovery Approach is comprehensive textbook on data mining details the unique steps of the knowledge discovery process that prescribe the sequence in which data mining projects should be performed. Data Mining offers an authoritative treatment of all development phases from problem and data understanding through data preprocessing to deployment of the results. This knowledge discovery approach is what distinguishes this book from other texts in the area. It concentrates on data preparation, clustering and association rule learning (required for processing unsupervised data), decision trees, rule induction algorithms, neural networks, and many other data mining methods, focusing predominantly on those which have proven successful in data mining projects.Data Minin
Have you got a task to prepare a research paper on data mining? Well, be ready that it will be not so easy and will take much time (of course if you are not a genius who can write several research papers on data mining of that kind a day!).
Firstly, to write a research paper on data mining you should clearly understand what data mining is. So it is collecting of information from pre-existing data that are stored in some database, such as, for example, one carrying out by a supermarket about customers’ shopping likes. Right? So start creating your masterpiece. (more…)
After being broken by criminal defense blogger I Was The State, the story about the Austin Police Department and the city’s municipally-owned utility mining electric use data in an attempt to determine who may or may not be growing marijuana in their home, the Austin Chronicle has broken the story wide open.
We urge you to read the entire story, but, of course, we find some of the email exchanges the Chronicle uncovered the most interesting aspects of the whole sad saga:
The Chronicle has obtained e-mails between Coffey and Haynes, along with several lists of AE customer data that Haynes apparently used to fish for potential pot-growing operations. In combination with court documents related to Colby’s case, the records paint a disturbing picture of how APD has been conducting at least some of its marijuana investigations – and how the information was used, at least in Colby’s case, to develop probable cause for a search. The documents also reflect an APD officer

ABSTRACT
The problem of indexing large collections of time series and images has received much attention in the last decade, however we argue that there is potentially great untapped utility in data mining such collections. Consider the following two concrete examples of problems in data mining.
Motif Discovery (duplication detection): Given a large repository of time series or images, find approximately repeated patterns/images.
Discord Discovery: Given a large repository of time series or images, find the most unusual time series/image.
As we will show, both these problems have applications in fields as diverse as anthropology, crime prevention, zoology and entertainment. Both problems are trivial to solve given time quadratic in the number of objects, but only a linear time solution is tractable for realistic problems. In this talk we will show how a symbolic representation of the data call SAX (Symbolic Aggregate ApproXimation) allows
