After using Conference Call Omni for a while, I found that it used a bit too many system resources and it took a bit too long to update (often 12+ hours after a game had finished). So I went back out on the hunt for another, and came up with Hockey Widget 1.0. It installs the same as any other widget, and the setup is just as simple. But this one offers a number of views. The first is the Scoreboard view - If you hover your mouse over any of the games, the summary (period by period goals, game stars and team standings) will appear. Switch to the Standings tab and you can view the current standings for any division. Again, hover over any of the teams and you’ll get a detailed view of of that team (goals for, goals against, home and away record, last 10 games and current streak). This one is a keeper. And it should be noted that there are widgets by the same author for other sports, including baseball and football.

In the new issue of Blender, Chris Carrabba of Dashboard Confessional received their rating of the 35th worst lyricist in rock. Well, I suppose they are entitled to their opinion, and his songs are a bit self-indulging, although I think a good song almost has to be. In any case, I do take mild offense that the one song they chose as their example of his poor writing is one of my all-time favorite songs ever, “The Sharp Hint Of New Tears” from the album “The Swiss Army Romance”. That song brings me back to a certain time in my past when, yes I admit it, I was heartbroken. And even though I am happy that it is all in the past, I appreciate a song like this, which reminds me of such a time and place, and state of being. I’m not likely to ever go back to such senseless heartbreak. Yet, it is somehow comforting to still have that connection to those over the top emotions, which I can experience when I hear this song again. Okay, I’ll stop writing.

Using Hoverdash, you can select any of your Dashboard widgets and have them run directly on your desktop. Start by downloading and installing Hoverdash. Launch it from your Applications. With the hockey season fast approaching, like many Canadians, I’m starting to get psyched. It’s not enough that I have the Leafs schedule added to my Google Calendar, I have to have them on my dashboard too. Enter Conference Call Omni. Oh and yeah, it works with pro football (and lots of other sports/leagues). After you’ve downloaded and installed it (the same as any other widget), launch your dashboard. Click the small i icon to set it up. Select the Sport, Division and Team of your choice, place a check in the Remember these settings when closing this window box, and click Done. Ta-da! I’m sure the Google Calendar Dashboard Widget was big news earlier this year, and somehow I missed it until now. But that got me thinking - maybe a couple of other people missed it as well. Exactly as its name implies, it’s a widget you can install to your dashboard that displays the next x days, for any of your Google Calendars. Just paste the XML URL’s for your Google Calendars into the configuration section of the widget. When you click any of the events in the widget, your default browser will open a new window (or tab) and load that calendar event.

Those Xbox message boards are always a cornucopia of information that Microsoft really doesn’t want us to know. That seems to be the case again, as Xbox.com forum goer by the name of “Post Up” has posted what appears to be the list for what we can expect in this fall’s Dashboard Update… …which you can read after the break. Oggi vi segnalo una nuova utility gratuita per Mac, a mio avviso molto utile. Si tratta di WidgetWizard, e ci permette di creare widget personalizzati, con i Feed RSS dei nostri blog preferiti, da inserire nella dashboard del nostro Macintosh. Per creare il nostro widget, tutto ciò che dobbiamo fare è inserire il titolo, l’indirizzo del Feed (ovviamente) e quello del blog, e settare qualche opzione per l’aspetto estetico. Ed ecco che il widget è pronto per l’uso. Un modo semplice e comodo per avere i nostri blog preferiti sempre sotto controllo! Download: WidgetWizard Condividi

Here’s a random update about Beijing Olympics 2008: * Beijing is said to pledge US$ 13 million to clean up the city and advocate itself to launch a “Green Olympics” campaign. Relocating steel factories to outer provinces, planting more trees, replacing old buses etc. Since Beijing has a hazy city line due to smog, the government is still pushing itself to reach its goals. * Originally, Beijing has 4 main subway lines, but in the next year, it aims to make 4 more to improve accessibility to other areas of the city. Simultaneous constructions are underway and most of the workers work seven days a week to be able to finish with a tight deadline. * Water Cube is a big dome stadium currently in construction in Beijing. The outer membrane of the dome stretched over the pentagonal and hexagonal steel beams to simulate the look of an ice-blue cube with a water-like surface. The membrane allows the Water Cube to use solar energy to heat the pools and light the inter

Hopefully, you bought into the idea of having a one page dashboard to oversee your business. It could be produced monthly, weekly or, perhaps, even daily in some circumstances. So, what’s on your dashboard? What does that reveal about you? One of my clients, which use a monthly dashboard that’s a very nice summary of his operations, keeps it to a minimal set of numbers. However, even in that minimal set of numbers, it’s interesting to see what happens to show up, in particular one number. One that is broken out is incentive payments. He’s keeping a close watch in that particular area. Another one I’ll mention is the income tax payment. He has a subchapter S corporation and to his credit he’s concerned about having enough money tucked away ahead of time in order to meet the quarterly tax payment requirements. I wish every company was on the ball in this area as much as he is. So take a look at your dashboard, maybe step back and look at it from an objective level and ponder
