Among the gems are his first formulation of the theory of natural selection, his first written doubts that species were fixed and touching correspondence from his wife on religious faith.The huge set of documents and images is part of the Darwin Online project, based in Cambridge, which claims to be the largest Darwin bibliography and manuscript catalogue created. Those first few miles south of the Berrimah Line are pretty packed with things to be and places to do. Now we’re clear of such obstacles to driving progress we can take the pace back a notch. Wending our way south, Hayes Creek marks the first point where the landscape really stands up and does anything since leaving Darwin – that is beyond just lazing around and occasionally undulating in an effort to try and pass for “not flat” over that first 140kms. The Hayes Creek Wayside Inn is situated opposite a grand escarpment that does nice things to the eyes after so much horizon and the tucker (food) is not bad either, as is a banter with the old chap often found at the bar sporting the white beard down past his nipples (a proper beard). I like the Darwin fish. To me, it is a healthy pro-science statement. Of course, I acknowledge that it also carries an anti-religion connotation for some people due to its design (i.e., borrowing from the Christian design which came first) and the inevitable conflict between religion and science. I'm also aware that some people view displaying a Darwin fish as an act of symbolic aggression. More than just being an interesting symbol that is interpreted in diverse ways, the Darwin fish exposes the scope of Christian privilege and says volumes about the plight of nonbelievers.I do not have a Darwin fish on my car, but I would very much like to. Why? I perceive it as one of the rare symbols which conveys both a pro-science and an anti-superstition sentiment simultaneously. It seems apparent to me that philosophically and spiritually, many people today lack any sense of meaning or purpose.  I was raised Catholic back in the 50's and 60's.  My recollection is that meaning and purpose were pretty much just assumed.  Not saying that being Catholic is the answer though. I have argued here at times that Darwinism ushered in a sense of meaninglessness.  If everything we see was not designed but simply happened by chance from totally random events, then meaning is... well, meaningless.  Some have taken issue with me in past comments arguing that Darwin does not challenge religious belief.  That seemed a ridiculous argument since logically, if Life is totally random then there can be no meaning. Here is a what todays high school and college students are being taught in their biology classes.  Very interesting.  If Darwin is right, it means that there is no meaning. A lot more here. That is a bad outcome even if Darwin was right (which of course he wasn't).
