A quick note for the pop-culturally inept:
A Darwin Award is a tongue-in-cheek honor named after evolutionary theorist Charles Darwin. Awards have been given for people who "do a service to Humanity by removing themselves from the Gene pool", i.e., lose the ability to reproduce either by death or sterilization. It is for people who kill or, [...]

One of the many egregious moments in the new Ben Stein anti-evolution film "Expelled" is the truncation of a quote from Charles Darwin so that it makes him appear to give philosophical ammunition to the Nazis. About 90,000 pages of manuscripts, field notes, photographs and sketches connected with Charles Darwin are being placed online, where they can be viewed free. Among the gems are his first formulation of the theory of natural selection, his first written doubts that species were fixed and touching correspondence from his wife on religious faith. The huge set of documents and images is part of the Darwin Online project, based in Cambridge, which claims to be the largest Darwin bibliography and manuscript catalogue created. Many of items were previously available only to scholars with access to the Cambridge University Library. The project began in 2002 and this is the last major set of additions. Dr John van Wyhe, Darwin Online's director, said: "[The documents] have been known to scholars, bu

A documentary on the effect of fishing the Nile perch in Tanzania's Lake Victoria. The predatory fish, which has wiped out the native species, is sold in European supermarkets, while starving Tanzanian families have to make do with the leftovers. The larger scope of the story explores the gun trade to Africa that takes place under the covers -- Russian pilots fly guns into Africa, then fly fish back out to Europe. The hazards and consequences of this trade are explored, including the pan-African violence propagated by constant flow of weapons into the continent. If it is a "survival of the fittest" world, as Darwin concluded, then the capitalist interests that fund the gun runners are climbing the evolutionary ladder on the backs of the Africans in this stark Darwinian example. A major evolution exhibit opens in Toronto next week, which begs the question: Why so much fuss over a 150-year-old theory that seems to gather more scientific support by the decade? It's perfectly fitting that what is billed as the most in-depth exposition of artifacts related to Charles Darwin's development of the theory that man descended from other, earlier life forms – called Darwin: The Evolution Revolution – will find its temporary home in the Royal Ontario Museum beginning March 8, for that has traditionally been the type of setting where human beings and their prehistoric ancestors actually come face to face. All other encounters, especially between homo sapiens and the giant lizards that predated them by untold millennia, are pure fantasy. Much, that is, to the chagrin of gene

The state's proposed new science standards aren't on today's Board of Education agenda, as we far can tell. But a handful of influential Northeast Florida moms who are active in their PTOs and the Republican Party say that with the help of state Sen. Stephen Wise, R-Jacksonville, they've been given the green light to come to Tampa to tell the board they don't like what they consider to be a dogmatic, all-or-nothing take on evolution.
"It's just evolution and that's it," Kim Kendall, a St. John's County resident and self-described mom-who-won't-go-away, told The Gradebook. She said she and her group "want to make it clear we are not advocating creationism, or anything that's illegal by Supreme Court ruling. (But) there's a lot of different scientific data out there showing different things … Science told us forever that the earth was flat."
Kendall said Wise, the chair of the Senate education appropriations committee, intervened to get her and the other moms some time

Webster a user at Wikihow posted the following criticism of Evolution:
Lerner and other anti-creationists believe that evolution should be exempt from the normal methods of sound teaching. It seems that he doesn't share Todd's and Kerkut's confidence that evolution is strong enough to withstand teaching about its problems (and I agree with Lerner!). And if students question, then they might actually become skeptical of the underlying materialistic philosophy, and would be unable to become "intellectually fulfilled atheists'. Instead, Lerner prefers that students are taught discredited evidence for evolution, so they may keep the faith at all costs.

Michael Shermer, In Darwin's Shadow: The Life and Science of Alfred Russel Wallace: A Biographical Study on the Psychology of HistoryOxford University Press | ISBN 0195148304 | 2002 | PDF | 4.7 MB | 443 pagesFor ninety years now—as long as Wallace lived—he has largely been lost to us, partly as a result of the ravages of time, partly because of the dark shadow cast by his more famous contemporary Charles Darwin, and partly because of his own modesty. As Poulton recalled, “Ten years ago the Hon. John Collier generously offered to paint a portrait of Wallace. If the offer had been accepted we should have had a noble presentation of one of the greatest men of the last century—a splendid companion to the Darwin and Huxley we all know and love so well. But nothing would induce Wallace to sit.” The man was modest to a fault, a trait that would contribute to his eventual obscurity. But as Darwin’s star has brightened, those in his orbit are beginning to glow in his reflected ligh

The Darwin Awards are normally handed out to people who manage to end themselves or their ability to participate in the gene pool in some spectacularly idiotic way. But technology companies have some serious Darwinian impulses as well, and we’ve seen many examples of this over the years. Those first few miles south of the Berrimah Line are pretty packed with things to be and places to do. Now we’re clear of such obstacles to driving progress we can take the pace back a notch. Wending our way south, Hayes Creek marks the first point where the landscape really stands up and does anything since leaving Darwin – that is beyond just lazing around and occasionally undulating in an effort to try and pass for “not flat” over that first 140kms. The Hayes Creek Wayside Inn is situated opposite a grand escarpment that does nice things to the eyes after so much horizon and the tucker (food) is not bad either, as is a banter with the old chap often found at the bar sporting the white beard down past his nipples (a proper beard).

Five years 25 Million! Wow that seems like a lot for him. Walker is a good pass rusher, especially thriving against weaker offensive lines, but can struggle against premiere guards. Darwin has always been a huge liability against the run, and I think that is why he is better suited to be a situational pass rusher, and not a starter.Knowing the Eagles luck, he will have three sacks when they play the Bears.I wonder what Marv Levy thinks about this.
So you’ve been following the Northern Territory (NT) motto for a while now — Not Today, Not Tomorrow, Not Tuesday, Not Thursday. I like the Darwin fish. To me, it is a healthy pro-science statement. Of course, I acknowledge that it also carries an anti-religion connotation for some people due to its design (i.e., borrowing from the Christian design which came first) and the inevitable conflict between religion and science. I'm also aware that some people view displaying a Darwin fish as an act of symbolic aggression. More than just being an interesting symbol that is interpreted in diverse ways, the Darwin fish exposes the scope of Christian privilege and says volumes about the plight of nonbelievers.I do not have a Darwin fish on my car, but I would very much like to. Why? I perceive it as one of the rare symbols which conveys both a pro-science and an anti-superstition sentiment simultaneously. Since I am both pro-science and anti-superstition, it is an unusually accurate symbol for my worldview. But the main reason I'd like to have one because of how it makes me feel when I see one on another vehicle. They

Darwin Streaming Server 5.5.5 fixes two overflow bugs that, if exploited, allow attackers to inject their own code into the machine. VeriSigns iDefense, which was credited by Apple with reporting the flaws, obtained the information about the vulnerabilities through its bounty-for-bugs Vulnerability Contributor Program.
Remote exploitation of multiple buffer overflow vulnerabilities in Darwin Streaming Proxy allows attackers to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of running service, usually root, warned the iDefense advisory.

During the adult forum on Sunday morning, Professor David Wollert of Northeast State is going to present his documentary on the "Religious Views of Charles Darwin." Professor Wollert is the author of the article, "Finding Gould's God". Here are a couple of paragraphs about Darwin: Charles Darwin has come to be one of the most controversial scientists in history, which is quite interesting in light of his compassionate and unassuming personality. Far from the poster boy for atheism that many groups have marketed him as, Darwin’s life reads as the moving story of an honest and vulnerable human being in a state of perpetual soul searching. It depicts a man slipping from theism, to deism, to agnosticism, a fall driven as much by his scientific ideology as by his inability to reconcile human suffering with a benevolent God.Darwin entered his adult life as a theist. In 1831, he graduated from Cambridge Divinity School with modest aspirations of life as a country parson. He boarded th

1) Charles Darwin's Beagle Diary* by Charles Darwin
Amazon Astore UK | US
Book Description:
On 27th December 1831, HMS Beagle set out from Plymouth under the command of Captain Robert Fitzroy** on a voyage that lasted nearly 5 years. The purpose of the trip was to complete a survey of the southern coasts of South America, and afterwards to circumnavigate the globe. The ship's geologist and naturalist was Charles Darwin. Darwin kept a diary throughout the voyage in which he recorded his daily activities, not only on board the ship but also during the several long journeys that he made on horseback in Patagonia and Chile. His entries tell the story of one of the most important scientific journeys ever made with matchless immediacy and vivid descriptiveness.

The sudden appearance of large animal fossils more than 500 million years ago - a problem that perplexed even Charles Darwin and is commonly known as 'Darwin's Dilemma' - may be due to a huge increase of oxygen in the world's oceans, says Queen's University (Canada) paleontologist Guy Narbonne (homepage), an expert in the early evolution of animals and their ecosystems.
In 2002, Dr. Narbonne and his research team found the world's oldest complex life forms between layers of sandstone on the southeastern coast of Newfoundland. This pushed back the age of Earth's earliest known complex life to more than 575 million years ago, soon after the melting of the massive 'snowball' glaciers. New findings reported today shed light on why, after three billion years of mostly single-celled evolution, these large animals suddenly appeared in the fossil record.
In a paper published on-line in Science Express, Dr. Narbonne's team argues that a huge increase in oxygen following the Gaskiers
Book: The Top 10 Myths About Evolution
by Cameron Smith, Charles Sullivan
Amazon Astore UK | US
Book Description
Though the United States is the world leader in science and technology, many of its citizens display a shocking ignorance regarding basic scientific facts. Recent surveys have revealed that only about half of Americans realize that humans have never lived side by side with dinosaurs, and about the same number reject the idea that humans developed from earlier species of animals. This lack of knowledge in the face of overwhelming scientific evidence for evolution springs from a number of negative influences in contemporary society: poor secondary education in some regions of the country, misinformation in the mass media, and deliberate obfuscation by supporters of Creationism and Intelligent Design.
In this concise, accessible, "myth-buster's handbook," educators Cameron M. Smith and Charles Sullivan clearly dispel the ten most common myths about evolution, which conti

It seems apparent to me that philosophically and spiritually, many people today lack any sense of meaning or purpose. I was raised Catholic back in the 50's and 60's. My recollection is that meaning and purpose were pretty much just assumed. Not saying that being Catholic is the answer though.
I have argued here at times that Darwinism ushered in a sense of meaninglessness. If everything we see was not designed but simply happened by chance from totally random events, then meaning is... well, meaningless. Some have taken issue with me in past comments arguing that Darwin does not challenge religious belief. That seemed a ridiculous argument since logically, if Life is totally random then there can be no meaning.
Here is a what todays high school and college students are being taught in their biology classes. Very interesting. If Darwin is right, it means that there is no meaning. A lot more here. That is a bad outcome even if Darwin was right (which of course he wasn't).
As a parent, I have days during which I wonder what the staff in the maternity ward was thinking when they actually released me from the hospital and sent me home with my babies. What they should have done was pumped me full of demarol, pushed me into the parking lot, and handed my children off to the first head trauma case who walked into the ER. (Trust me, my kids would have been better off for it.)I mean if you really knew me you would realize that I'm not exactly parenting material. Seriously, I'm REALLY NOT parenting material. At all. I was never a big "baby person," was never charmed by toddlers, taken in by five year olds. When I was in my twenties and still childfree I never gave anyone under the age of 21 a second glance. Until I had my son, my experience with small children was limited to bopping them on the head when I caught them drinking the flavored syrups on the table as a waitress at IHOP.When I brought my first born home from the hospital it took me a month to get th
Science teaching materials deemed 'not appropriate' by the government should be allowed in class, Education Secretary Alan Johnson has been urged.Chemistry teacher at Liverpool's Blue Coat School, Nick Cowan, says the packs promoting intelligent design are useful in debating Darwinist evolution.Education officials insist intelligent design is not recognised as science. It argues that evolution cannot explain some things so the universe must have had an intelligent creator. The packs were sent out to 5,000 secondary schools by a group of academics and clerics known as Truth in Science. The Department for Education and Skills said they were inappropriate and not supportive of the science curriculum.Continued at "Let us test Darwin, teacher says"------- See last week's "Government department rejects creationist infiltration of science teaching":The Christian think-tank Ekklesia and the British Humanist Association (BHA) have welcomed a statement from the British government's Department
ABC News November 26, 2006: Istanbul, Turkey (Reuters) - A lavishly illustrated 'Atlas of Creation' is mysteriously turning up at schools and libraries in Turkey, proclaiming that Charles Darwin's theory of evolution is the real root of terrorism.Arriving unsolicited by post, the large-format tome offers 768 glossy pages of photographs and easy-to-read text to prove that God created the world with all its species. At first sight, it looks like it could be the work of United States creationists, the Christian fundamentalists who believe the world was created in six days as told in the Bible. But the author's name, Harun Yahya (website)*, reveals the surprise inside. This is Islamic creationism, a richly funded movement based in predominantly Muslim Turkey which has an influence U.S. creationists could only dream of.Creationism is so widely accepted here that Turkey placed last in a recent survey of public acceptance of evolution in 34 countries** - just behind the United States."Darwi

His theories explaining this phenomenon through natural and sexual selection are centr
Today (Feb. 12) is Darwin Day. For some ideas on how to celebrate, see this announcement at ReligiousRightWatch. I applaud their suggestion about joining the National Center for Science Education. Even if you don't have the money to join now, I encourage you to familiarize yourself with their organization. They do good work, and their site is a great place to get information on the state of science education in American schools.Tags: Darwin, science, education
New journal Outreach and Education in Evolution will arm educators for battle with creationists:Nearly a century ago, John Scopes [1] was found guilty of violating a Tennessee statute when he taught evolution in his classroom. Though an appeals court later reversed his conviction on a technicality, the law lingered on the books, joined by later laws promoting "scientific creationism," and, most recently, "intelligent design." The battle to keep religiously based explanations of the history of life - especially human life - out of the science curriculum continues unabated. And though a number of educational institutions and organizations have had notable success in combating intelligent design in the classroom, what is needed now is a fresh source of evolution materials and anti-creationism ammunition for our school teachers on the front lines of this ongoing battle. Today, on Charles Darwin's 198th birthday, Springer announces plans for a new journal which will do just that.A father-a
