      Darfur T-Shirt Versus Louis Vuitton
Have you heard of Nadia Plesner? She is running a near one-woman campaign to raise awareness and charitable contributions for the Darfur situation. She’s an art student, she’s 26, and she doesn’t have the legal clout that a worldwide fashion brand can afford. The point is Nadia is selling her t-shirts at no profit, all [...]

Artist: “Louis Vuitton is trying to stop my Darfur campaign!”
Artistic expression, social responsibility, and corporate property rights hardly ever (IF ever) mix. More often than not, the entity with the biggest money bag wins. Fashion Wars: Louis Vuitton vs Darfur Fundraiser and Juicy Couture vs Victoria’s Secret
Louis Vuitton sued Nadia Plenser, a Danish student artist and designer, for her “Simple Living” campaign. Nadia is a fundraiser that supports the Divest for Darfur organization. She drew an image of a young Darfur child holding a chihuahua dog and sporting a designer bag that looked like the famous Louis Vuitton’s Murakami Multicolore canvas pattern. Louis Vuitton filed a lawsuit last April 15th and demands payment for their ‘intellectual property’.Meanwhile, last April 29 Juicy Couture filed a lawsuit against Victoria's Secret Pink. They accused VS for using similar ideas and icons, such as their trademark seat-of-the-pants Juicy logo and selling apparel wrapped in the shape of lollipops and ice cream cones, mimicking the packaging used in Juicy's Sweet Shoppe. The company is ask

The only way to alter China's hand in Darfur
Rather than attempts at embarrassment, sanctions, threats, or a serious military intervention that China would interpret as a challenge to its control of the oil fields, the focus should be on tying diplomatic and economic efforts together coherently, to enlist China constructively. This can be done – because it has been done, in dealing with North Korea's nuclear ambitions. In 2006 the US pushed to get expanded voting rights for China in the International Monetary Fund, to reflect its weight in the world economy. The quid pro quo Treasury Secretary Paulson promoted was a "hope," as he gently put it, that more power in the IMF would motivate China to allow its artificially low currency to float to a market exchange rate (helping US and EU exports).China's currency started to float. Picture of the day: Drawing from Darfur.
This picture was drawn by a young Chadian boy in a camp for displaced persons in Eastern Chad. His drawing describes the attack on his village by Janjaweed militias from Sudan. On the top left hand corner of the drawing is written ‘ataque village’ (French for ‘attack of the village’). The attackers, wearing military uniforms and on camels are shooting civilians with machine guns and burning their houses. Bullets are coming from all over. Next to each civilian that is shot is the word ‘Morts’ which is the plural of ‘dead’ in French.More posts on The Road about DarfurPicture courtesy wagingpeace.info

The base was completely destroyed. One of the soldiers killed in the attack was Senegalese, while the majority were Nigerian. One Malian soldier, and one soldier from Botswana were also killed in the raid, according to AU spokesman Assane Ba."If they died because they didn't have the arms to defend themselves, I will withdraw all the Senegalese ... Violence in Darfur Continues
A recent ad campaign is about to be released by SaveDarfur.org which tells the stories of people who are still suffering and dying in the genocide in Darfur. According to SaveDarfur.org over 100,000 people called President Bush to live up to his promise to address the General Assembly about Darfur while at the United Nations this week. President Bush told the UNGA, ‘”The United Nations must answer this challenge to conscience -and live up to its promise to promptly deploy peacekeeping forces to Darfur.” The United Nations recently approved a joint peace keeping force of United Nations forces and African Union forces to put a stop to the violence perpetrated on non-Arab Sudanese people. Peace talks are also set to be held in October. The United States would of course need to contribute their share of the bill for the peacekeeping forces and supply their share of the equipment as well. If there is no follow through from those that have promised their support to the

      Sudan, Palestine, Iraq…Darfur?
Sudan will accept Palestinian refugees from Iraq, the BBC reports: The offer came after Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir received a letter from the Palestinian leader, Mahmoud Abbas. The UN refugee agency has expressed concern over the deteriorating conditions for the hundreds of Palestinians in camps on the borders. They have tried to leave Iraq, but have been refused entry by Jordan and Syria…The UNHCR estimates about 34,000 Palestinians currently live in Iraq. Between 200 and 300 have been killed since the US-led invasion in 2003. Sudan’s actions are perhaps commendable on the surface. But in light of the refugee crises within Sudan involving actual Sudanese people, the government’s actions appear both strange and hypocritical. Is the Sudanese government only willing to help fellow Arabs? Are they attempting to curry favor in the Middle East? Whatever their motivation, it seems that even gestures such as these will do little to boost their image in the eyes of the

When I first saw the link to this free Darfur Olympic Dreams temporary tattoo, I laughed. I’m sorry, but I just assumed from the name that this was a tattoo that was requesting for Darfur to be allowed into the Olympics or something. And then I though, yes, the #1 priority for every living person in Darfur must be to see their area represented in the 2008 Summer Olympics. It’s right there at the top of their priorities list, ahead of peace, a permanent home, and food. Then I actually clicked the link and saw it was a serious effort to help get peace, shelter, and food to Darfur. Through China. Or the Olympics. I’m not sure, all I know is that I might be headed downward after I die for laughing at the people of Darfur. [via the forums]Technorati Tags: Darfur, 2008 Summer Olympics, China, tattoo Share This

politics | The Need For Sustained Pressure On Darfur [read: Khartoum]
As I wrote in relation to a post by my friend Reno:It is not simply that the US has spent her moral capital (this is true, of course, and the pictures of our torturing of prisoners have come to symbolize that), but she has also spent her military and political capital on the war in Iraq, which basically ties our hands as there is no way that we're going to use military force against another country that is consider by many a Muslim country. Therefore, our threats are impotent.Any political fervor that is mustered against the atrocities in Darfur is simply placated by promises from Khartoum. Once the pressure subsides or is ameliorated by their promised actions, there is no way of keeping Khartoum accountable. And, yes, they know this. Part of the problem is there has not been a movement to say that not following the CPA = policies as usual = genocide.I really don't think the CPA will be implemented by a government who came to power through a coup to prevent a peace process between

The Economist explains what happened in the financial markets last week. “New studies have found that people tidy up more thoroughly when there’s a faint tang of cleaning liquid in the air; they become more competitive if there’s a briefcase in sight, or more cooperative if they glimpse words like ‘dependable’ and ’support’ - all without being aware of the change, or what prompted it.” Interesting piece on the secret life of the sub-conscious brain. Darfur, Sudan: "Not on My Watch"
Displaced women sit inside a temporary home in a camp in North Darfur. Photo by REUTERS/Michael Kamber. At the beginning of George W. Bush’s presidency he read a report on the Rwandan genocide. In the margins of that report he wrote the words, “Not on my watch”. It has been over three years since the beginning of the genocide in Darfur and nothing has been done. President Bush is, of course, not the only one responsible for not acting in the Darfur region to stop the genocide there. After the Holocaust we said, “never again”. After Rwanda in 1994 we said, “never again”. Why is it taking so long for Americans and the rest of the world to demand that their leaders do something about the atrocities that are occurring there? So far since the conflict began in 2003, over 400,000 people have died and more than 2.5 million civilians have been forced to flee their homes. How You Can Help Stop The Darfur Genocide Right Now
As many of you probably know, there has been an ongoing genocide occuring in Darfur. It is as complex as it is horrific - though with one thing for certain: it must be stopped. The above film was put together by an advocacy group Stop Genocide Now, who are also documenting the journey of humanitarian workers as they navigate the people and region. I highly recommend checking out their website and joining the movement. As well, Amnesty International has a dedicated campign for Darfur with further information and action guidelines. Coincidentally, the question “How do we get beyond empty promises for Darfur?” was asked at the recent Youtube debates to the upcoming presidential candidates. Here’s what they said: Why do you think the Darfur conflict has been largely ignored by the West? What do you think is the best course of action to stop the genocide?

According to the New Hampshire Union Leader: Sen. We can.”   Senator Joe Biden says we should send troops into Darfur to fight in a civil war, yet we are told we need to leave Iraq because our soldiers are caught in a civil war. What is the difference between the civil wars? President Bush has not sent troops to Darfur and we have troops in Iraq. The Democrats whole policy is based on opposing Bush, that is the only difference between the supposed two civil wars. If America was in Dafur the Democrats would be calling for withdrawal. An international conference on the peace process in Darfur opened yesterday in Tripoli, Libya. Representatives from the UN, the EU, the US, Sudan, its neighbors, and donor countries are present. Various rebel groups have representation “on the sidelines” as well, most prominently a recently-formed alliance of five groups that has been attracting major attention in the international media. The conference is attempting to streamline multiple peace proposals. One major step forward has already occurred: the agreement of the Sudanese government to meet “soon” with rebel groups. Many conference participants are hopeful. Jan Eliasson, the UN’s Sudan envoy, has said that the “moment of truth” is approaching for Darfur. Two questions, among many, are: What does China think? And what does Libya want? Some insight into both is provided by this briefing from April, wherein Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte answers questions after a trip that inclu

Global Warming is being Blamed for the Genocide in Darfur
From breitbart.com: UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said that the slaughter in Darfur was triggered by global climate change and that more such conflicts may be on the horizon, in an article published Saturday. “The Darfur conflict began as an ecological crisis, arising at least in part from climate change,” Ban said in a Washington Post opinion column.UN statistics showed that rainfall declined some 40 percent over the past two decades, he said, as a rise in Indian Ocean temperatures disrupted monsoons. “This suggests that the drying of sub-Saharan Africa derives, to some degree, from man-made global warming,” the South Korean diplomat wrote. “It is no accident that the violence in Darfur erupted during the drought,” Ban said in the Washington daily. When Darfur’s land was rich, he said, black farmers welcomed Arab herders and shared their water, he said. With the drought, however, farmers fenced in their land to prevent overgrazing. “F

      Sudan 'backs UN-led Darfur force'
From the BBC:Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has agreed unconditionally to a joint UN-African Union peacekeeping force for Darfur, diplomats have said. South Africa's ambassador at the UN, Dumisani Kumalo, said Mr Bashir backed the move after a meeting with Security Council envoys in Khartoum. Sudan agreed to allow the 19,000-strong force earlier in the week but ultimate control has been a sticking-point. Violence in Darfur has killed more than 200,000 people and made 2.5m refugees. An existing AU force of 7,000 troops has struggled to contain the conflict. Much of the violence has been linked to clashes between government-sponsored Janjaweed militias and Darfur's rebel groups. moreI'm not at all inclined to believe he'll keep his word given the history. So pardon me for not rejoicing. Hopefully this time will be different but I doubt it.

Darfur and Diet Coke: How Cola May Contribute To Genocide
Earlier this week, the Bush Administration spoke in favor of tougher economic sanctions for Sudan as a strategy for halting the genocide in Darfur. Skeptics of the proposal argue the economic sanctions will be ineffective without a.) UN Security Council support b.) support from the Chinese (who do big business with Sudan) or c.) because we are dependent upon Sudan’s oil exports. Yet again, it appears as if economic threats will fail in the face of business interests, lack of support from the International Community and an unnerving dependency on oil.
