Martin Luther King Jr. and Ghandi are the two most successful practitioners of non-violent protest. King convinced the white majority to extend equal rights to blacks, and Ghandi successfully lobbied the British to let Indians govern themselves. Whom did they persuade? It's no coincidence that the people they coaxed to relinquish their advantage claimed a direct philosophical lineage from the Magna Carta. Defending the Dalai Lama
I write for a newspaper, says Dan Gardner, in so many words. When I author, I am relevant and topical. My vocabulary is college-approved, my message fit to modern style. My insight and I share a desk in an office – bastion against the screaming ignorance of the pop mob. If not for me and the degree in my holster, the tone is felt, come the Visigoths. Making his rounds for the CanWest News Service, Dan attends a lecture in Ottawa given by the Dalai Lama. Though impressed by his “septuagenarian” (good word!) ability to pack ‘em in like Hanna Montana, Gardner is let down by the lack of sophistication in the Dalai Lama’s message. “He’s a wonderful old guy, but his words are platitudes on the level of Oprah or Deepak Chopra,” he later writes in his article Non-wisdom from the Dalai Lama For evidence, he cites various Dalai Lama quotes: …I believe that the purpose of life is to be happy…. …We all come from our mother’s womb. On a lush couch before some 5,000 of his exiled countrymen, the Dalai Lama leaned on one elbow and gazed intently as two dozen wide-eyed children sang Tibetan songs, their young spirited voices rising into the rafters of a newly minted cultural centre.A smile touched the corners of his mouth, but the famous glint in his eye was nearly absent. It was at best a bittersweet moment, the Tibetan culture kept alive so far from home.

Dalai Lama and Cousin met with Bush.
U.S. President George W. Bush presented the Dalai Lama on Wednesday with the U.S. Congress' highest civilian honour and urged Chinese leaders to welcome the monk to Beijing. The exiled spiritual head of Tibet's Buddhists by his side, Bush praised a man he called a "universal symbol of peace and tolerance, a shepherd of the faithful and a keeper of the flame for his people." "Americans cannot look to the plight of the religiously oppressed and close our eyes or turn away," Bush said at the U.S. Capitol building, where he personally handed the Dalai Lama the prestigious Congressional Gold Medal. The Dalai Lama, along with his Spanish cousin Fernando, attended the ceremony at a Congressional party and then attended a private party at the White House. The only blight on the festivities was when the Dalai Lama's octogenarian cousin Fernando Lama was caught trying to sneak a couple of strippers into the White House party. Said the Dalai; "You have to excuse Fernando, he always was the bla

China is extremely angry that President Bush will be hosting the Dalai Lama for a Congressional Gold Medal on Wednesday, saying it will damage US-Chinese relations. In following with the Seminal’s October series on education, check out this NY Times story about the overwhelming number of schools failing to meet No Child Left Behind’s “escalating demands.” The presidency is so passé. For those of you who missed it, two years after winning an Oscar, Al Gore & friends have won the Nobel Peace Prize for their work on bringing climate change to the fore. (Meanwhile, this year’s 3 American recipients of the Nobel Prize in Economics have won for work that has broad-ranging implications for carbon trading.) “America’s most formidable foe–once practically dead– is back. This is one of the most historically significant legacies of President Bush. At nearly every turn, he has made the wrong strategic choices in battling Al Qaeda.” T

      Tibet and Dalai Lama
This Wednesday, October 17th, the President of the United States will present His Holiness the Dalai Lama with the prestigious Congressional Gold Medal of Honor. Thousands of Tibetans and their supporters will be in Washington, D.C to celebrate this historic occasion. Following the award ceremony, the Dalai Lama will give a public address from the West Lawn of the Capitol. This celebration will also mark the first public meeting between the Dalai Lama and a sitting U.S. President, following a wave of high profile meetings between the Dalai Lama and world leaders. Last month, he was warmly met by German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, despite strong objections from the Chinese government.Unfortunately, more recently, Portugal's Government and its President didn't receive him officialy.

Dalai Lama, Lama Duck and Co.
Clearly envious of the way cool reaction Chancellor Angela Merkel got by ignoring Chinese warnings and being the first German Chancellor to openly welcome that treacherous Tibetan trouble-maker and no good bodhisattva of compassion incarnation the Dalai Lama himself, President George W. Bush has decided to up the ante and become the first sitting US President to appear publicly with the inscrutable separatist revolutionary, too. Worse still, the Dalai Lama will be awarded the Congressional Gold Medal the following day, the US Congress’s highest civilian honor. Taking place at a time of increased tension between Tibetan monks and Beijing, and we all know what unpredictable violent jerks Buddhist monks of any kind can be, much less Tibetan ones, White House aides figure that with any amount of luck this move will piss off the Chinese at least twice as bad as the Germans did, maybe even a whole lot more. China to regulate Dalai's heirs
Communist China has issued new rules to regulate the reincarnation of Living Buddhas, which include the Panchen and the Dalai Lama. The move is seen as an attempt to thwart any eventuality like the possible birth of a Living Buddha in India to replace the ageing Dalai Lama, or any attempt by his close followers to find his successor. The history of Buddhism — including Tibetan Buddhism — have instances of Living Buddhas being born outside the Tibetan region. The sixth Dalai Lama and renowned poet, Tsangyang Gyatso, was born in Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh.

Dalai Lama on Compassion and message of Mahayana Buddhism
"My message is the practice of compassion, love and kindness. These things are very useful in our daily life, and also for the whole of human society these practices can be very important."Basically, universal responsibility is the feeling for other people's suffering just as we feel our own. It is the realization that even our own enemy is motivated by the quest for happiness. We must recognize that all beings want the same thing we want. This is the way to achieve a true understanding, unfettered by artificial consideration."At the heart of Buddhist philosophy is the notion of compassion for others. It should be noted that the compassion encouraged by Mahayana Buddhism is not the usual love one has for friends or family. The love being advocated here is the kind one can have even for another who has done one harm. Developing a kind heart does not always involve any of the sentimental religiosity normally associated with it. It is not just for people who believe in religions; it is f

Thursday Thirteen And Quotes by the Dalai Lama
Yesterday was the second day (and last day) of the Dalai Lama's historic visit to Maui. I've covered more about this visit to Maui in my last two posts, so if you'd like to read more about his visit, check out the last two posts. Today I'd like to focus my Thursday Thirteen on thirteen of my favorite Dalai Lama quotes from his talks and teachings:1. His Meditation Advice "....in your life, unless you make specific time for something that you feel committed to, you will always have other obligations and you will always be too busy".2. "I always have the feeling that I'm just another human being."3. "You must not procrastinate. Rather, you should make preparations so that even if you did die tonight, you would have no regrets. If you develop an appreciation for the uncertainty and imminence of death, your sense of the importance of using your time wisely will get stronger and stronger."4. "The point that has to be borne in mind is that the reason why reflection on suffering is so im

Dalai Lama and My Urgent & Important Task
While reading my post, you are probably wondering if I did accomplish my 5 "urgent and important tasks" because I told you I cannot blog until I accomplished them. However, as I was accomplishing one of the tasks, I got caught in an interesting twist that I thought is worth blogging, so here I am. I am cutting myself some slack. Since this post is related to accomplishing my urgent and important task, I will post this one.The task that I am talking about is "buying the tickets for my kid's recital". This recital is a big deal and will be held at Maui Arts and Cultural Center. This task used to be "important but not urgent" so it kept on being put in the back burner. Well, times passed and now it's urgent because the seats are being sold and we'll end up seating way far back of I don't buy. As it is, we already have lost any chance of a good seat, but at least if I buy today we won't be in the worst seat. Hey, my 2 kids are dancing! Why did I procrastinate on buying the ticke

The Dalai Lama Arrives On Maui Tomorrow
And trust me...this island will never be the same! Already the traffic on the roads has increased dramatically--I'm guessing because of the many visitors arriving just to lay eyes upon the beloved Dalai Lama. Since this is the very first time His Holiness the Dalai Lama has come to Maui, the excitement and buzz on Maui is growing stronger by the day. Here's the editorial from yesterday's Maui News April 22nd Sunday Edition. As I mentioned in previous posts, for those that aren't on Maui, or unable to attend for many reasons, there will be a live webcast here on Tibet Fund.If it weren't the Dalai Lama, I would certainly have many second thoughts about dealing with the throngs of people, the traffic, the heat, the sun, and the waiting. All of these conditions will be very challenging and will require everyone to be patient, loving, and kind. Here is a great quote by the Dalai Lama (from his great book "The Art of Happiness") which we will all need to remember in the next two days:"I

Dharamsala, India - Home of His Holiness the Dalai Lama
Photos and tips by guest author Stefan K From Delhi, the most practical mode of transportation to Dharamsala is by bus. There are two bus services (State and Deluxe) available. I opted for the deluxe bus ride. The ride to Dharamsala takes about 10 hours and goes through small, winding mountain roads. Before coming to India, I heard many horror stories of overtired bus drivers falling asleep while driving the long stretch to Dharamsala and of ill maintained buses breaking down on the route and travelers getting stranded. So I was more than a little bit concerned. I ended up getting a last minute ticket with my uncle in the back of the bus. The ride was the worst I ever took to this day! Leg room was non-existent, the bus of course had no Air Conditioning, the fans were broken, and the suspension in back needed repair. (Side Note: Always book a seat in-between the axels and not in back) Since the Deluxe bus price is more than double the price of the government bus, it makes me
