U.S. President George W. Bush presented the Dalai Lama on Wednesday with the U.S. Congress' highest civilian honour and urged Chinese leaders to welcome the monk to Beijing. Tenzin Gyatso, the fourteenth Dalai Lama was in Washington DC to receive the highest civilian honour given by the US government: The Congressional Gold Medal (see image below). In a ceremony attended by Speaker Of The House Nancy Pelosi and representatives of Congress, President Bush became the first sitting US president to meet publicly with the leader to present him with the medal.
The Medal is designed and struck individually to honor each specific recipient. Past honorees have included the first recipient: George Washington, Pope John Paul II, Rosa Parks, Winston Churchill, Jackie Robinson and John Wayne, the actor.

This Wednesday, October 17th, the President of the United States will present His Holiness the Dalai Lama with the prestigious Congressional Gold Medal of Honor. Thousands of Tibetans and their supporters will be in Washington, D.C to celebrate this historic occasion. Following the award ceremony, the Dalai Lama will give a public address from the West Lawn of the Capitol.This celebration will also mark the first public meeting between the Dalai Lama and a sitting U.S. President, following a wave of high profile meetings between the Dalai Lama and world leaders. Last month, he was warmly met by German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, despite strong objections from the Chinese government.Unfortunately, more recently, Portugal's Government and its President didn't receive him officialy.
Clearly envious of the way cool reaction Chancellor Angela Merkel got by ignoring Chinese warnings and being the first German Chancellor to openly welcome that treacherous Tibetan trouble-maker and no good bodhisattva of compassion incarnation the Dalai Lama himself, President George W. Communist China has issued new rules to regulate the reincarnation of Living Buddhas, which include the Panchen and the Dalai Lama. The move is seen as an attempt to thwart any eventuality like the possible birth of a Living Buddha in India to replace the ageing Dalai Lama, or any attempt by his close followers to find his successor. The history of Buddhism — including Tibetan Buddhism — have instances of Living Buddhas being born outside the Tibetan region. The sixth Dalai Lama and renowned poet, Tsangyang Gyatso, was born in Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh.
The Dalai Lama ended his 10-day visit to Hamburg on Friday with a call for more compassion and criticism of the actions of Chinese security forces in Tibet. From Delhi, the most practical mode of transportation to Dharamsala is by bus. There are two bus services (State and Deluxe) available. I opted for the deluxe bus ride. The ride to Dharamsala takes about 10 hours and goes through small, winding mountain roads. Before coming to India, I heard many horror stories of overtired bus drivers falling asleep while driving the long stretch to Dharamsala and of ill maintained buses breaking down on the route and travelers getting stranded. So I was more than a little bit concerned. I ended up getting a last minute ticket with my uncle in the back of the bus. The ride was the worst I ever took to this day! Leg room was non-existent, the bus of course had no Air Conditioning, the fans were broken, and the suspension in back needed repair. (Side Note: Always book a seat in-between the axels and not in back) Since the Deluxe bus price is more than double the price of the government bus, it makes me
