Toxic Fumes, Blisters and Brain Damage: The Costs of Industrial Dairy Farming
The people who live near Willet Dairy, a large industrial farm in New York state, are reporting health problems ranging from blistering eyelids to brain damage. Cow manure is known to release gases that, in high concentrations, are linked to those symptoms. However, the EPA is preparing to roll back air-pollution-reporting requirements for industrial animal farms like Willet, even as environmentalists are warning that regulation is already too lax in New York. Willet began in 1974 as a small, family-owned operation. But today, Willet spans 6,300 acres over four sites. Willet cows produced more than 157,000 tons of manure in 2006. Willet liquefies the untreated waste and pumps it into manure lagoons, as is standard practice among large-scale dairies. And there it sits, only hundreds of feet

Healthy Habit No. 10: Drink Water and Eat Dairy
Water and milk are essential fluids for good health, but they can also help with shedding pounds. The body needs water to keep properly hydrated and individuals vary widely in how much water they need. Joints need it to stay in motion, and vital organs such as the heart, brain, kidney, and liver need it to work properly. If you don't get enough water, the body goes into emergency mode, and clings to every single water molecule it can find, reports the University of Minnesota Water Resources Center. The stored molecules appear as extra weight. The weight is only released once the body gets enough water. The calcium in dairy, on the other hand, is known to be important for strong bones and teeth. Studies have also shown it can help prevent high blood pressure, kidney stones, heart disease, and

As you can see the cupcakes were pretty flat and they aren't the most decorative cupcakes but I think I did pretty good for a first timer.I used the butter cream icing recipe from AllergyMom and a 2 bowl cake from some website. I did alter both recipes slightly because I didn't have vanilla soy milk for the icing, and I added more cocoa to the cake. For the most part it came out really good! Or so says my husband, who ate two of the cupcakes! Damian has ended up being sick again so he isn't in the mood to eat cupcakes. Anyway I just wanted to share! Will keep ya posted!

Dairy House, Somerset, England. Winner of an award from the Royal Institute of British Architects for regional architecture in 2007: This architectural delight involved the creative conversion of an old rural dairy into a five bedroom house. Using local labour and materials, the house is clad in estate oak, stack-dried in the farmyard: a technique that suggests the design, raw planks separated by spacers allowing air circulation. The structural expression between old and new creates a 2-storey steel and glass threshold up to the roof valley gutter. It is only as the visitor climbs the stair into the extension that the sectional manipulation of the house on the side of a hill is apparent; the first floor landing expands through a glass wall to an indented court holding a rock enclosed spa-pool. This project is also on the shortlist for the Bombay Sapphire Prize, for its innovative use of glass. (more…)

Aurora "Organic" Dairy is Far from Being a Family Farm
Aurora Organic Dairy's sprawling Platteville farm -- one of five the company operates -- might not be quite the bucolic image of a family farm that shoppers envision as they pay sometimes twice as much for organic milk. But founders of the nation's biggest private-label organic milk provider say that such large facilities are necessary to capture economies of scale that lower prices and spread the ecological benefits of organic farming practices. The Boulder-based company's critics contend that Aurora's practices are jeopardizing the livelihood of the very small-scale family farmers that started the organic dairy movement. They charge that Aurora's large farm simply pays lip service to organic ideals in order to capitalize on the premium prices consumers are willing to pay for organic milk.Sources:Rocky Mountain News October 20, 2007

photo courtesy of geek philosopherI love buying cooking magazines, I try to buy one every fortnight during our main grocery shop. This time I bought one called Donna Hay Magazine, I had never bought this one before and it was really good. I found a bunch of LC suitable recipes and shared some of them hereBut what was even better was the home made dairy recipes inside which looked very simple. There's ricotta cheese, curd cheese, clotted cream and yoghurt. With Maya being sensitive to the proteins in regular cows milk I have to give her A2 milk. I have yet to come across any cheese or yoghurt's (which she loves) that are made with this milk so I thought some of these recipes would come in handy.Anyway I thought you guys might like them too :)Keep in mind that the cup measures are metric cup measures so use the other measure in brackets if you don't use metric and metric tablespoon are 20ml where as US tablespoons are 14 ml which is about half an ounce, measurements and conversions.Ri

Eating mass-produced middle-market chocolate is like being a giant ape? It just makes NO sense at all!! Dairy Cows Bos taurus
Because much of the cost of a cow is the feed and labor needed to maintain her, fewer but higher yielding cows mean lower priced milk. Dairy herd improvement ultimately benefits consumers. That's why it's just as important to keep complete and accurate records as it is to keep the cows contented. The National Cooperative Dairy Herd Improvement Program has been tracking Bossy's milk yields since 1905.Over the years, this program has made enormous contributions to dairy cattle breeding. ARS scientists receive the lactation records of all herds enrolled in the program and use the figures to rank the bulls that sire the nation's dairy cows and to rank the cows themselves. The results of years and years of scientific dairying? Milk production has been trending upward for more than 25 years in the United States-from about 117,000 million pounds in 1970 to more than 150,000 million pounds in 1994-even though the number of milk cows has been reduced. Yoshi Japanese Restaurant and Mary's Vermont Dairy
I saw some good reviews on Yoshi Japanese Restaurant Yoshi Japanese Restaurantso I was excited to go. Lon, Andy, and I were all disappointed. The quality was a bit below average and the cuts were terribly ugly. The salmon pieces had a whole layer of fat left on and the yellowtail was an awful cut that made it unrecognizable. The salad that comes with each dinner is also really sad. The wilted greens and watered down dressing set the stage for the coming meal. While we were walking home, we spotted a Mary's DairyMary's Dairy. Lon bought a chocolate and cheesecake fudge that looked much better than it tasted. I asked the employee if the ice cream had food coloring in it and he said he didn't know. To play it safe, I only tried the cookies and cream and the Yin-Yang (milk chocolate with dark chocolate pieces), flavors I could reasonably assume were not colored. The cookies and cream was super sweet with cream over-powering the cookie part. Andy and I both got the Yin-Yang, surprisingly

Organic Dairy and Meat Improves Quality of Breast Milk
Eating organic meat and dairy has a beneficial effect on mothers’ breast milk, increasing the amount of healthy fatty acids, according to a study of 312 breastfeeding women in the Netherlands.Women who ate dairy and meat products that were mostly (90 percent or more) organic, had significantly higher levels of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in their breast milk. CLA is a fatty acid that is thought to be anti-carcinogenic, anti-atherosclerotic, and anti-diabetic. It also boosts the immune system and is beneficial for body fat composition. Among newborns, CLA is thought to promote immune system development.By eating organic, the researchers point out, mothers can therefore influence the supply and quality of fatty acids they give to their infants. There is a growing body of evidence that organic foods are, in fact, healthier than conventionally grown varieties. Cows that are pasture-fed, for instance -- at least a part-time requirement to meet organic standards -- produce milk with high

The (non) Dairy Queen kicks wheat to the curb
Warning: feel free to file this under 'I always knew that lady was a fruitloop'. Or something like that. But then I will be forced to ask, 'Is that fruitloop dairy-free? How about wheat-free?'I have eschewed wheat and dairy during seasons of my life, for various reasons. Because Marilu Henner told me to. (The dairy, anyway.) Because my breastfed son had 'digestive' issues from week one. Because my naturopath suggested it a couple of years ago.It is pain to eat this way, especially because I have a bone fide egg allergy. I certainly don't expect other people to accomodate my plan. But my stomach always feels better when I'm off the 'stuff'.It's a fact. A big pain in the butt fact. And now that I have a belly full of pills, all with ulcer warnings on the bottle, I am taking care to protect my gut. We'll see if it helps.wheatfree dairyfree pills stomach specialdiet GF/CF

Presidential Geek Survey Dairy - Day 14
ABC news asked of John Edwards, “Can a wealthy candidate live among the privileged and really care about poverty?” I don’t know, ABC. Can a person work in journalism and really care about the truth? Edwards kicked off his “Road to One America” tour today, which will hit 12 cities in 8 states in 3 days, in order to put a spotlight on the 37 million people who live in poverty in the United States. This move has brought comparisons to Bobby Kennedy’s 1968 tour of Kentucky. “John Edwards isn’t Robert Kennedy — which isn’t his fault,” Kennedy’s daughter said. Maybe it is his fault. If Edwards had tried harder and used The Secret, maybe he could have been Robert Kennedy. Maybe if Geeks use The Secret, that will attract the candidates to the Geek Survey and someone will actually respond to it. Think positively and you will attract what you want! But don’t think too hard - you might pop a vein or give yourself

New Study Reinforces Dairy's Value in Reduced Calorie Diet
Low Calorie DietResearchers Found that Adults in Year-Long Study Lost Weight with DairyYou don't need to cut dairy from your diet to achieve weight loss success, suggests a new study published in the August issue of Obesity Research.Researchers at the Mayo Clinic found that obese adults can include up to 4 servings of dairy foods per day in a low calorie diet, combined with moderate exercise, and still lose a significant amount of weight and body fat. This new randomized clinical trial compared the weight loss results of 72 obese adults following three different reduced-calorie diets: a "high-dairy" diet that included 4 servings of dairy foods (milk, yogurt or cheese) each day; a "high-dairy/high fiber/low glycemic index" diet that included 4 servings of dairy each day; and a "moderate-dairy" or standard diet that included 2 servings of dairy foods each day. After nearly one year (48 weeks), the participants in all three groups experienced significant weight loss and body fat loss, pro

My friend has been diagnosed as Gluten & Dairy Intolerant
A good friend of mine has recently been diagnosed with a Gluten & Dairy Intolerance. At first I was sad to hear the news but then I realized that it was actually good. She had been feeling unwell for such a long time that it was a relief for her to finally know what the problem was and start being able to control it. Of course once you are diagnosed, then what do you do? There are the obvious things to take out of your diet such as bread, pasta, milk & cream but what about all the hidden things in chicken stock, soy sauce and especially butter which is used in just about every type of cooking! To help I offered to go over to her house & teach her how to cook one of my favorite meals - Thai Yellow Curry. Here are a few tips from our night that you might be interested in: - Coconut Milk contains no dairy (it really is from a coconut) so it makes a great dairy alternative - Rice Milk & Almond Milk are excellent dairy alternatives for breakfast, coffee & even cooking -

Dairy Dilemma: The Hype behind Probiotic Yogurt
In this day and age, people are more health-conscious than ever before and marketers are reaping the benefits. Everywhere we look, in supermarkets and on TV, we are bombarded with products that claim to offer multitudes of health benefits. The latest crowd to jump on the bandwagon is the dairy industry with their “probiotic” yogurt, which claims to have “live probiotic cultures” that promote a healthy lifestyle. For decades, doctors and nutritionists have been telling us about the many potential benefits of the L. acidophilus and L. bifidus bacteria cultures found in regular yogurt, so what makes this new “probiotic” yogurt so much better? Well, aside from the fancy word, nada. All yogurt, unless it has been pasteurised after the manufacturing process, contains live bacteria cultures; usually one of the two mentioned before. By labeling otherwise ordinary yogurt as “probiotic”, marketers are able to fool consumers into paying more

      QA: asthma and dairy
Q: Hi Dr. Mercola, Let me just say that I Love you and think your information is wonderful, My son has asthma and I was told to take him off all dairy. I have done that. My question to you, is what about organic grass fed dairy? Is that any different for a child with asthma? Also, we live in New Jersey, and I cannot get non pasturized dairy. I do however buy organic grass fed butter and milk. Is that ok, or is the pasturisation killing all the good stuf?A: We get thousands of questions but I must admit that I am more inclined to answer questions of those that express their deep appreciation. Great question but I have answered it many times previously on the site. So please use the search engine. Simple answer pasteurization is an absolute AVOID.  You simply have to get the raw food. Pasteurized milk should be avoided by asthmatics, even grass fed organic. But please review my previous articles on this

      Bodywork, Dairy, Nursing, Formula
Just found this. I've seen the likes of it before, but this is just the cat's meow of info! That raw goat blend sounds like a great substitute. Great soy info, and he's really honest about the need to use a processed formula base. The expense sounds prohibitive for most. We could never have done it. I'm glad I knew enough about nursing to want to know more, and that I was able to do it, and had great support and information around me. I don't know how people do it without adequate support. Maybe they don't. The whole family has to be on board, and then there must be outside support as well.I really don't know anything about formula. My first was virtually without solids for her first year, and nursed until 3 1/2, only weaned because she didn't like the taste of colostrum when I was carrying my second. She nursed through most of the pregnancy, and for about three months post-partum. Then the baby had a growth spurt and I called off the extra nursing. I never pumped or used bottle
