      Dominoes
Tonight I will walk out the front door to get to my bed.Seriously.In fact, I will walk, carrying baby, toothbrush in hand, out the front door, around the house, through the back gate, and back in through the screened lanai. Tim's clothes are already in there, so he'll just have Stella. All for the sake of having the office tiled and the kids back in their own rooms when they return tomorrow. Never

So who is next? As advisers to Bear Stearns struggle to find a buyer or funding in the next 28 days, Wall Street, the City and the financial district in Tokyo were scrabbling to find out who is the most exposed to Bear Stearns, either through loans or trading positions.Traders in all three centres were panicking even for those banks not directly exposed to Bear. They feared that the problems experienced at the stricken bank signalled that the credit crisis has deteriorated to a new level.Yesterday, traders began to look anxiously at the robustness of Lehman Brothers, which, although bigger than Bear, is small compared with JPMorgan Chase, Morgan Stanley and Citigroup.Shares in Lehman dropped 11 per cent yesterday, a far bigger fall than its other rivals, which saw their stock decline by ab

      Dominoes
I leaned forward and adjusted the camera so my parents could see Alleke playing with dominoes on the floor behind me. "Can you see her?" I asked, glancing at Alleke over my shoulder, then back at my parents sitting in their living room, across the ocean, framed by the small computer screen. "It looks like she's playing with dominoes," my mom said, leaning forward.I smiled and nodded. My mom sat back in her chair."So, do you have any news you would like to share with us?" my mom asked with a grin, glancing at my dad."News?" I asked. My mom was beaming."Do mean are we pregnant?" I asked."Well," my mom said, "I read your blog. I saw that picture of April with the two babies." I laughed."No, mom, we're not pregnant," I said. I laughed some more."I will tell you this much, however," I said. "We would love to be pregnant right now because that would mean our next child was on the way.""Adoption just looks different," I said. We've been very open about the fact that we're trying to h

When The Dominoes Begin To Fall
The most common theory used as reason to conduct the various military conflicts during the Cold War is as applicable to the current War on Terror as it ever was in the fifty year stare-down between the West and the Soviet Union. The "Domino' theory, which states that once one country falls to communism it will spread to neighboring countries and so on, is most certainly in play when it comes to the Middle East and Islamofascism.Speaking of Pakistan…The painfully forced smile on the face of President Pervez Musharraf was hard to watch as he fulfilled his promise to the West and to his political opponents to "take off the uniform'. Whether or not this will do anything to quell the huge tide of pro-radical Islamism in Pakistan is debatable. What we do know is that Pakistan is to the Afghanistan battle what Iran is to Iraq - a pest of a neighbor who claims innocence in public while taking financial and political advantage in supporting terrorism. With the country teetering

Tipping points is a term frequently used in the context of climate change. It is usually used for referring to events toppling over to cascading mechanisms of destructive collapse in nature. Another way to use the term is when referring to a sudden rapid propulsion of behavioral change among people that lead to a critical mass of positive and substantial change. To find and understand social levers that trigger positive tipping points of change and then being able to orchestrate them would be a lovely tool in the fight to stop the devastating carbon bricks of climate chaos from tipping over.Bricks tipping over.A talk by Gerald Marten about environmental success stories where viscous cycles were able to be reversed by the means of social and ecological tipping points. A scary verbal illustration of climate tipping points by David Wasdell.

      Dominoes: The addiction
Maybe it’s my Canadian sentimentality that cherishes the audible slap of a beaver’s tale on the water as a signal of alarm, but there are few sounds that I find more soothing than the loud smack of a domino on a table indicating to one and all a high scoring play. For those of you that only know dominoes as that set-em-up-knock-‘em-down game that children love and parents abhor, then you’re missing out on my favorite pass time. I have recently become re-addicted to dominoes, or more specifically the game Five-Up (also known as Muggins), and it is at least partially responsible for the recent neglect of my blog (my case of writer’s block shouldering the larger contingent of blame). Five-up it seems, now occupies every vacant moment in my life and given the lack of domino players in my area, much of my time has been spent online at Yahoo Games, playing people from around the world. The joy of Five-Up is that the rules are relatively easy to learn and yet there is enough strate

      CRASH & BURN AT DOMINOES
WATSON: Holmes?HOLMES: Watson?WATSON: Holmes?HOLMES: Watson?(TOBY WOOFS AS HE TRIES TO PRISE OPEN BICCIE TIN)It is the 20th of February. Holmes is in a sulk because I beat him, nay thrashed him at dominoes. And he is envious, methinks, of my brand-new slippers. The slippers are blue with a dash of white down the sides. They are profoundly comfortable and warm and have aided considerably the aching corn on my big toe on my left foot. We have sat here, exchanging glances, for the best part of the morning. Confound it all, one could drown in such a silence. No doctor hath greater patience than Dr Watson. It may take an hour, a day, a week even, but Holmes WILL apologise for his unbecoming behaviour and WILL forgive me and Mrs Hudson for smashing his beloved Ming vase whilst we enjoyed some hot crumpet by the fire late last night. He needs to get out more. Everybody says so. Holmes, you infuriatingly superannuated anorak, GET A LIFE!
