I’ve never quite understood why recordings of concerts appeal to people.I mean I can understand the appeal of listening to music, sure, I mean that’s the whole point of music isn’t it, to listen to it, but really – why on earth watch 2 hours of close-ups of people’s fingers pressing buttons, pulling strings and clapping their hands to show us how it’s all been made? It’s just a glorified Making Of video. You might as well sell me a DVD of David Blaine with all the other volunteers left in.Anyways, this DVD of Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour in London earlier this year fell into this category for me.Not that that’s a bad thing. He had released a record on his own in 1978, but About Face is much more accessible. Gilmour has a stellar band backing him, including Jeff Porcaro (drums), Pino Palladino (bass), and Anne Dudley (synthesizer). The songs on About Face show a pop sensibility that Pink Floyd rarely was concerned with achieving. Although the album didn't attract the attention of a Floyd release, several cuts did manage to get airplay. "Until We Sleep" is rife with shimmering synthesizers and cavernous drums, and "Blue Light" was a minor pop hit, with Gilmour's trademark delay-drenched guitar giving way to a driving, horn-laced rocker. Pete Townshend wrote two of the tracks: "Love on the Air" and the propulsive "All Lovers Are Deranged." O
Available for a limited period over the Christmas holidays - and dedicated to the memory of Syd Barrett, who passed away in July - will be an 'Arnold Layne' single featuring two live versions of the song: one with David Bowie on vocals, the other with Richard Wright (both from the Royal Albert Hall).Poignantly, it will also include a live acoustic cover of 'Dark Globe', from Syd's debut album, 'The Madcap Laughs'. There will be a limited press of 7" singles in Europe and 10" singles in North America.These will be available in all good record shops from 26 December.
