Next, he pointed out that "homogeneity, which is the fundamental feature of the pays, should not, in so far as the region is concerned, be exclusive of a certain amount of variety". The region should "combine opposed elements". Thirdly, he argued that new tendencies, particularly of an economic character, should be taken into account, since professional organizations will be based on a regional system. For religious Russians, the entire Lenten Season, referred to as the Quadragesima, has a markedly different feel than normal, day-to-day life. Christmas Traditions and Customs
For most of us, the holidays are comprised of Christmas holiday celebrations and traditions. Many family traditions are handed down from generation to generation.Christmas Decorations Without a doubt, one of the most important holiday customs is the family Christmas tree. Year after year, trees are decorated with different kinds of ornaments and various decorations and are carefully stored once the season is over. In some families ornaments are kept from generation to generation which brings childhood and pleasant memories for family members. Most houses are decorated with garland, mistletoe, and wreaths. Some families go all out and put up Christmas lights outdoors. In some countries Christmas tree is different. For example, in Italy, the Christmas tree is called "Italian Ceppo', a pyramid shaped structure made of wood often called the tree of light, decorated beautifully with fruit, nuts and presents. A Thrilling Encounter With Customs Agents
It was the mid 1990’s and the US embargo with Cuba was in full effect. Travel to, and trade between, the two countries was nigh impossible. Scraggly rafts washed up on the South Florida shore with alarming regularity. The Elian Gonzalez episode was still a few years away, but everyone could see something like it was in the offing. It’s possible that the travel bug is genetic. My parents have always been avid travelers, and while it has been a long time since we have done so, my childhood was highlighted by a handful of trips to far off places. We went to Mexico a few times and to Colombia once. My dad’s work as a doctor has taken him to almost every corner of the globe, and sometimes the rest of us would get to tag along. This was only because such family trips could be written off as ‘medical missions.’ (more…) Share This Article

The Times reports:Local councils and other public organisations, including the health service, are to be urged to dramatically reduce translation services and instead focus on promoting English. The move is an admission that the current practice of translating official documents and signs into minority languages has backfired by ensuring that immigrants never bother to learn English.Hazel Blears, the Communities Secretary, will announce today the move as part of a package of measures intended to encourage integration of new immigrants. Other measures include the issuing of information packs and Citizen Days, where immigrants will learn about local customs and life in Britain. Wedding Customs and Superstitions
Getting married isn’t that easy. Of course I haven’t been in that stage yet hehehe but I’ve heard how wearying the preparations are. From filing of marriage documents, organizing the wedding ceremony settings and reception and etc would surely drain your energy and your budget. Would you believe marrying couple are particularly susceptible to bad luck and evil spirits? I myself would not believe such superstitions but anyway nothing will lose if you follow those. It is being said that it is better to err on the side of caution than to risk the slightest mishap on that special day. In the Philippines Filipinos still adhere to numerous widely-held folk beliefs that have no scientific or logical basis but maybe backed-up by some past experiences yet can be dismissed as mere coincidence. I wonder if my officemates Ann and Jeedo who are going to get wed on September 9 also practice some of the wedding superstitions. If I miss anything on the list of superstitions below,

Customs play essential role in controlling ODS traffic
Customs agencies and other enforcement bodies play a key role in the effective monitoring and control of ozone depleting substances (ODS) and therefore must be made familiar with its regulatory mechanism, said the National Academy of Customs, Excise and Narcotics (NACEN). Since monitoring and control of ODS traffic has become inevitable to prevent illegal trade as also to effectively implement and enforce a given regulatory regime, customs agencies must be made familiar with any legislative and regulatory mechanism that need their attention. It said developing countries were still using them mostly in the refrigeration and air-conditioning (RAC) sector. According to the phase out schedules agreed upon by the parties of the Montreal Protocol, developing countries had to freeze their production and consumption of the main ODS, chlorofluorocarbon, starting from July 1, 1999. The phase out schedules for other ODS such as halons, carbon tetrachloride, methyl, chloroform and methyl bromide h

      Some Old Customs And Traditions
Here are some "old wives tales" and old customs and traditions:A bride is lucky if she wears old shoes. If a cat sneezes on the day before a wedding, the bride will be lucky in her marriage. A young bride would wear her hair long and loose as a symbol of her youth and innocence. It was OK for a woman to propose to a man during a leap year. If the groom drops the ring during the ceremony, the marriage is doomed. If you see a rainbow on your wedding day, it is a good sign. If you see a black cat on your wedding day, it is a good sign.

3 teachers fall for `Customs’ ruse
EVEN after cheating two teachers from the same school, a glib-tongued man confidently strode into a school in Bukit Beruntung, Rawang, to speak to another teacher about his daughter on Monday. The 29-year-old teacher, Julializa Abdul Manaf, who is also a counsellor, said the man, in his 40s, approached her as she was having lunch, complaining that his daughter was being bullied by her classmates.“I did not suspect anything as the student he mentioned existed. She is in my Civic classes, and so I listened to his grouses.“As I was taking notes on what he said, the man introduced himself as a Customs officer and told me that there would be an auction soon,” she said.Julializa said the man offered her a laptop and cell phone for RM900, an offer she thought she shouldn’t miss.“I was genuinely interested as I had thought of buying the items for my husband who is a trader,” she said. The man then asked for a deposit and since she only had RM450, he accepted the amount. Learn the Local Customs: Things to Avoid in a Bar
From my daily survival tips calendar: Essential Survival Knowledge: Gesture to Avoid (the Upside-Down Glass on Bar) In the United States and other countries, turning your glass upside-down might indicate that you do not want anything more to drink. In some pubs in Australia, however, finishing your drink, turning the glass upside-down, and placing it squarely on the bar may signal that you believe you can win a fight with anyone present. Anyone heard of this before? Or witnessed the unfortunate outcome of some unsuspecting traveler doing same? It might sound a little silly to folks in the States. But whether it’s true or not, it’s a good reminder to get acquainted with the countries you plan on visiting - especially local gestures and greetings. Seemingly innocuous gestures here in the U.S. - the thumbs up or the simple wave - might mean something altogether different in Asia, Africa, et. al.

How Do Tea-Drinking Customs Differ Throughout The World?
The manner in which people prepare and drink their tea differs all over the world. Some people drink tea plain. Others like to add milk and sugar or lemon juice. A few people like to add liquor, such as rum, scotch, or cognac, to their tea. In Tibet a cup of tea is served with a lump of yak butter floating on its surface. The Tibetans are so fond of this that they drink a great many cups every day. The Tibetans drink at least 10 or 20 and sometimes many more.Another old custom, once typical in Russia, was the use of samovar in making tea. The samovar is a large, graceful urn made of copper, brass, or silver. It holds about 40 cups of boiling water. The water is heated by charcoal. The top of the urn is saucer-shaped to hold the teapot, in which a strong essence of tea is kept steaming hot. Tea is served in a glass or a cup. About one quarter of a cup of the tea essence is used, and the rest of the cup is filled with boiling water from samovar. The Russians usually take lump sugar with t

      Learning Important Chinese Customs
Many of the Chinese customs of today have origins dating back hundreds, if not thousands of years. Many proverbs have been passed down from generation to generation such as “civility costs nothing”, or “courtesy demands reciprocity”, and so on. For instance, one of the world's most famous sayings when giving another a gift is the saying, “it's the thought that counts”. This saying originated in China from an interesting short story passed down through the generations. Once upon a time, a man went on a long tour to visit his friend, bearing a swan as a gift. The swan escaped, unfortunately, and in his effort to catch it, he got hold of nothing but a feather. Instead of returning home, he continued his journey with the swan feather. He gave the swan feather as a gift to his friend. When his friend received this unexpected gift, he was deeply moved by the story as well as the sincerity. From then on, the saying “the gift is nothing, it's the thought that counts” spread

      Malaysia/Kelantan Social Customs & Tradition
Salam The salam is the Muslim equivalent of a handshake. A younger person usually offers the salam by clasping the hand(s) of the elder. This is usually followed by a verbal greeting of "Assalamualaikum" (Peace be upon you). A non-Muslim should note that in Islam, physical contact between the opposite sex is discouraged. Thus, a non-Muslim should not be unnnecessarily alarmed if their offer of a handshake is not reciprocated by a member of the opposite sex. The salam often goes a step further between a younger and a respectable older person (parents, teachers etc); the younger person offers the salam first, then kisses them/it as a sign of respect. Peculiar to Malays (who make up the majority of Muslims in Malaysia) is the touching of the left side of one's chest after the salam. The hand is retracted gently after the salam, then placed over the heart to symbolise sincerity. The salam is the Muslim equivalent of a handshake Leaving footwear ou
