Monday Morning Curtain Raiser And The Week Ahead
A small scale merger Monday is already in the making and as usual it features companies that were not part of the Friday rumor mill: Netherlands' Qiagen buying Digene for $1.6 billion. Digene (DIGE) closed Friday at $44.77 with just a smattering of options trading. The takeover price is $61.25. Hot diggity! Blackstone, purported in the rumor mill to be after Micron (MU) is making a buy. But

Cisco (CSCO) - A Quick Wednesday Curtain Raiser
As I suspected, too much options mania and Cisco (CSCO) could not meet the hopes and dreams of not only the wild eyed options speculators but the market in general . CEO John Chambers pegged the revenue outlook to 15% to 16% Q4 growth from the 20% rise seen in the April, or fiscal third quarter. Analysts had been expecting a full 16% rise in revenue for Q4. So with Chambers guiding to slightly

      A quick Thursday Curtain Raiser
Economic calendar features jobless claims and import/export price data. Friday features the release of the Producer Price Index. With all the talk and nervousness about inflation, the inflation theme will no doubt be front and center again tomorrow. Earnings are coming Thursday afternoon from a variety of companies including Lam Research (LRCX), and Pier One Imports (PIR). It looks like

      Brief Thursday Curtain Raiser
Front and center Thursday morning at 8:30 ET is the latest Jobless Claims data. A small dip to 335k is expected. The trend has been rising one in recent weeks. Those who bought shares of Freemont General (FMT) on todays more than 20% surge on buyout speculation may be tempted to sell tomorrow, and perhaps at a big loss. Freemont has consented to an FDIC cease and desist order. The company also earlier cautioned that there's no assurance a sale of its assets will be completed. Earlier today, investors seemed to think that White Knights were lined up around the corner not only for FMT but the rest of the subprimes as shares in many rallied. But here's a guy who might be loading up on more subprime shares: Second Curve Capital's Thom Brown sees opportunity, according to the Wall Street Journal. Considering the beating Brown's fund has taken over the last few months, this would definitely be in the realm of, "THANK YOU SIR MAY I HAVE ANOTHER." I had long forgotten the name Thomas Brown,

      Brief Tuesday Curtain Raiser
The Tuesday preview is late tonight because I took a break from all the charts and data. I vegged out with the kids and watched something totally mindless - the Sponge Bob movie with the kids. It was amusing, but the tv show is actually funnier. That's an expensive Hollywood production for you.Things are looking far better than last night at this time with stock futures coming up green instead of crimson as markets in Asia stage modest rebounds including a 131 point gain for the Nikkei 225 into their midday break. Perhaps we're going to see a turnaround Tuesday? Heaven help the bulls if we wake up to red tomorrow morning, though. The gains in many of the Asian markets are the first in five days with some of the relief coming from a Yen that is just a tad bit weaker tonight, down by about 45 points basis Yen futures that I watch. If we get a spurt out of the gate tomorrow morning, that will be something of a novelty for the bulls since last weeks 400 point slide. Instead of weakness to

      Brief Wednesday Curtain Raiser
8;30 ET we get the final revision of 4th quarter Gross Domestic Product. The consensus estimate is for a big DOWNWARD revision to show growth of 2.3%. This consensus number will be important. Anything too far below will scare the stock market into further worries about corporate earnings; too far above 2.3% and inflation worries will grip the markets. GDP price deflator is expected at 1.5%.At 9:45 Chicago NAPM data comes our way. Important stuff here as well on manufacturing. It's forecast to bounce back a bit right to the diffusion line of 50 which would indicate tepid growth. Then at 10, New Home Sales data will be released. An annual pace of just over 1 mln is expected. So there's a good amount of market moving, or disrupting economic data on the way on Wednesday following the Tuesday slump and dump.I talked earlier about the stock market, so let's not beat a dead horse.I decided to take a breather on the gold futures... actually got out at $688 today. Tonight it's down to $671. I
