Just like last year, I found myself in San Pedro Cutud in San Fernando, Pampanga today to witness the Via Crucis, a Kapampangan passion play which has been the heart of the annual crucifixions here in the city, which is more popularly know as the San Pedro Cutud Lenten Rites.As the crucifixions are highlighted, many fail to recognize that they are part of an old cultural tradition of the barangay, a passion play written in the vernacular, which has been passed on from generation to generation. Every year we commemorate the death of Jesus Christ on the cross. And while Christians around the world remembers Christ death, there are still few who insistently exhume the already buried tradition of nailing themselves on the cross duplicating what Lord Jesus Christ did. I like to point out here some of the reasons for following the tradition:they deny Christ gift of salvation,they are convinced that they can repay their sinsthey are totally ignorant of God’s lawWe can’t duplicate what Christ did on the cross. What can be considered as a valid purpose of their seriously following the tradition is merely for a show as a tourist attraction. Hi all,With Easter Sunday almost upon us it seemed umm… an apt time to peruse suitable imagery to reflect this moment in the Christian calendar. Well it seems the National Gallery has aired a few of their gems in a series of 12 pictures called Crucifixion scenes in art which you can see at the Guardian Unlimited website. Featuring the likes of El Greco and Michelangelo, to name but a few.My personal favourite is Christ Mocked (The Crowning with Thorns) by Hieronymus Bosch (c1490-1500) Anyone familiar with Bosch’s work will know he was a particularly gruesome fellow who usually glorified in all manner of medieval torture and depictions of hell, fire and brimstone. (So, basically like most of today's TV Soaps!) However, here we see a more restrained, indeed moving scene as Christ (surrounded by his tormentors) gazes, almost with a hint of reflective irony, out at us as though to convey the unimportance of his physical torments.But what I really like about this painting is the way

There is an old Hebrew saying that says “Cursed is the man who is hung on a tree”, I’m not really sure what it means, but Paul later denied the saying, because of his understanding what what happened to Jesus. What happened with Jesus was so big that it even overturned old Hebrew sayings.

At one time there were as many as 6,000 people crucified in one instance (around 72 BCE) when Spartacus and his men were defeated, their bodies lined the road between Capua and Rome.
