Fight vs. Diaz Marks Crossroads for Pacquiao
It was almost a no contest. The fight result proved to be almost a one-sided affair in favor of Pacquiao. And Manny “the Pacman” Pacquiao goes into the history books as the only Asian and the first Filipino to hold Boxing Championship title in 4 weight divisions. His win against David “the Dangerous” Diaz earned him the World Boxing Council Lightweight Division Champion of the World. Diaz

Crossroads in History: The Struggle against Jihad and Supremacist Ideologies
In fighting Islamic supremacism, instead of an approach only based on tactical measures and efforts at clever twists of terminology, what if America had a true strategy that was instead based on the defense of our values on human equality and liberty? The true challenge of Islamic supremacism to America and the free world is not about Islam, Islamism, or terrorism, but about us. It is a historic c

Negativity in The Crossroads of America
First, some recent history. Unfortunately, a familiar pattern has emerged. The Clinton campaign was afraid she'd lose, so they went negative in New Hampshire, and it worked. Then it was Wisonsin, where they went negative again. It was much of the same in Ohio and Texas. She ran a television ad suggesting that the youthful Obama could not be trusted if a world crisis forced the president from bed in the middle of the night. She questioned his ethics by repeatedly raising questions about his relationship with a disgraced supporter who, by the luck of the draw for Clinton, is the target of a federal corruption trial that began Monday in Chicago, where Obama lives. And, highlighting a meeting between a top Obama aide and the Canadian government, she painted him as a typical, two-faced politi

Keep off the Grass: Parenting at the Crossroads
As a relatively new homeowner, I have grown to hate my lawn. Yes, I unintentionally killed my lawn (for the record, it was a weedy, crab grass, shag of a [...]

      Introducing Parenting at the Crossroads
As individuals, it appears to be within our power to change our behaviors, habits and choices to better reflect and impact our growing environmental concerns and societal obligations. Buying locally produced foods, refraining from needless car trips, switching out wasteful technologies and generally cutting back on our consumption of plastics and other landfill-clogging items are [...]

      Crossroads
Over and over again you will find yourself at a crossroad in life. This is a time where you have to make a decision perhaps an easy one and perhaps not. It's often at these times we make the wrong decision out of fear. There can be other factors involved too but more often than not it's fear or anxiety. A good rule of thumb is to travel down each turn in your mind and determine are you running down that road away from something or are you running toward something you really want? Decisions based on fear almost always leave you with nothing to gain. To gain in life we must risk. All of life is about risk and gain. We plant seeds risking to lose it all in order to gain a crop. We work all week risking to give away our hard work on the promise of a paycheck. We get preganant and carry a chil

I think that one of the hardest parts about suffering from a mental illness is the inability to make definitive decisions. There are times when people ask me things like "this of that" questions and I honestly don't know the answer. It's as though I can't find it in my mind. Things get misfilled. You can add to that the fact that I don't want to make the wrong decisions, I want to please them and

Memoirs of an omnivore: a crossroads in my journey (part 2)
This is part two of a two part series. Please go here to read Part 1. First of all, I began to realize that in the Bible - Old Testament and New Testament - God is portrayed as caring very much about all creation, animals included. For example, when God explains his deep compassion for the wicked, immoral city of Ninevah, he addresses this love not only to the number of people living there, but includes the "many cattle" as well. This is just one example; granted, we American Christians haven't focused on these aspects of Bible stories and commands but they are there in plenty. Then too, there are the specifics on treating animals in the Bible's Old Testament, leading to the laws of Kosher. But Christians don't have to follow this, right? The early Jewish/Christian leaders had a discussi

This is the first in a two part series - and its one of those posts where I would be so grateful if you would read and weight in on...First, you must know that I'm a meat and potatoes girl through and through. I grew up in rural Midwest farm land; I didn't personally live on a farm but most of my best friends did. We got our milk and meat literally still warm from the farm, not from the store. These farmers gave every ounce of their lives' energy to the care and nurture of their land, crops, and animals; in return, they ate and lived modestly, a full part of nature and not in any way disconnected from it. I loved this lifestyle, and I miss it. In the actual circle of life every living creature labors and toils to survive; every living thing both consumes and is consumed; even we at the top

For S&P 500 level 1300 points was topped on May 06 and tested one month ago. Dow Jones Industrial average has tested level of 12000 points already three times. After Chinese sell-off last year, one month ago and just now. NASDAQ Composite is not as interesting from technical point of view. It gave up all gains and all 2007's resistance against credit meltdown is away. Index is well behind Chinese sell-off bottom and another resistance line could be seen at psychological level 2000 points. This level has been tested 2 times in last 3 years.Related tickers: (DIA), (SPY), (QQQQ)

The Festival featured a multi-generational array of talent spanning John Mayer to Jeff Beck to B.B. Myanmar at a Crossroads
By Tom Plate BANGKOK _ In 1989 Chinese troops, on orders of the government, mowed down countless demonstrators in Tiananmen Square, Beijing. It was a sad spectacle that China is still living down, though memory fades with every year of spectacular economic development _ and with the nation's steady prideful movement toward hosting the Olympic Games next summer. Today, in what was formerly known as Burma, protestors, led by monks, are marching through the central streets of the capital of Myanmar in somewhat the same way. Will the soldiers shoot the monks? Will Yangon (Rangoon) in the end met the fate of Tiananmen? Or, for that matter, will the Yangon of 2007 look like the Myanmar of 1988, when street protesters were smashed like so many toy figurines, 3,000 people dead in the streets? Without a doubt, this junta has a voracious appetite for killing and repressing its own people. It's hard to see how some measure of bloody violence will be avoided. Myanmar is, in effe

Crossroads Guitar Festival: Clapton, B.B. King, Jeff Beck Tear Through Six-String Salutes to Friends and Idols“I do this for fun,” Eric Clapton confessed in an interview the day before he hosted and headlined the second Crossroads Guitar Festival, an eleven-hour marathon of solos and joy, on July 28th for 28,000 people at Toyota Park in Chicago. The sold-out event was held to benefit the Crossroads Centre, the drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility Clapton founded on the Caribbean island of Antigua in 1997. (Sales of the two-DVD set filmed at the inaugural Crossroads, a three-day affair in Dallas in 2004, have raised about seven million dollars for the Centre.) But the true theme of the day was Friends and Idols. The heart of Clapton’s hour-and-a-half set was a dynamic reunion with singer-organist-guitarist Steve Winwood. Together, they revived three songs from their 1969 album as Blind Faith. Clapton also paid tribute to a lifelong friend who couldn’t be there, George Harris

      Coker at the crossroads
I have debated blogging on this topic for a few days, but this morning I decided to go ahead with this. I am not writing this to disparage a young man, I am writing this to encourage a kid. LaMarcus Coker is a talented young man. He’s the Enzo fast Antioch native who led all SEC freshmen in rushing with 696 yards, including two runs of over 85 yards. He put up these numbers despite playing a minimal role early, and missing time later on in the season after sustaining an injury in the Alabama game. This offseason, much was made about how offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe was going to utilize Coker’s many talents. There were visions of Coker playing a versatile role on offense, lining up in the slot at times to take advantage of his elite speed against safeties and linebackers. His talents seemed well-suited to playing this Reggie Bush – Brian Westbrook role, and with the lack of proven big-play returnees at wide receiver, it was a natural fit. However, on the first day of fu

I attended the Eric Clapton Crossroads Guitar Festival this past Saturday at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, IL. What an incredible day. There were so many great players and jams. My favorite set of the day was Derek Trucks. Great band. Jeff Beck and John McLaughlin were also awesome. And Albert Lee was on fire with Vince Gill's band. The Guitar Village was really cool too. Fender, Gibson, and Ernie Ball all had booths setup where you could play their various guitars. I took a ton of pics and uploaded them to a Picasa web album. I wasn't close enough to the stage to get any great pics, but they're not bad. I took a lot of shots of the video screens too. Some of the pics may seem redundant, but I basically uploaded everything I had. Click the pic below to see the album. Crossroads Guitar Festival 2007

No one else can choose your direction at the crossroads of life, Time seems to stand still while a direction is sought. All the advice in the world seems to matter not at this moment, as you and you alone must choose your direction. Whether it be the choice of your own actions or ones put on you by others, what has brought you here makes no difference. Sit and contemplate what has brought you to the crossroad, what has gone before has gone, but what’s in front of you can be of your own making. Right after my election as mayor – I based the successful campaign on the 15-point strategic platform that Naganhons now refer to as Vision and Leadership 2020 or VAL 2020 – and I immediately proceeded to Manila to push hard for the first priority as mayor-elect: that of making Naga a city. With the enthusiasm Naganhons expressed in welcoming the “photo-finish” Senate approval, come the plebiscite this August, I am looking forward to a huge turnout and an overwhelming YES. (more…)

      At the Crossroads
There's a little voice inside my head. No, this isn't one of those posts where I mock my mental instability. Although, it has been awhile since my Split Personality Disorder post, so maybe I'm due.I have this feeling of being at a crossroads in my life. I don't want to delve too far into metaphor, because I tend to overdo them, but...I've been traveling this same old path for so long now that I've become familiar with every rut and bump. And suddenly I see this new path, veering off to one side. And the voice inside my head? Not such a little voice anymore. Not so gentle either. My inner monologue is asserting itself in new and startling ways. It chides me when I slack off, and praises me when I work hard or well. And somehow, through its influence, I find myself posessed of a frightening clarity.I can see my potential. I've caught a glimpse of the woman I have it within myself to become. And I'm scared stiff.I miss my precious ignorance. I miss the miserable contentedness of thin

      Kars at Cultural Crossroads?
Kars, at Turkey's border to the Caucasus, is today mostly known as the place where Pamuk's novel Snow takes place, among raging snowstorms and conflicts between the modern and the tradtional. Kars is a contrast and a crossroads - a natural anomaly in current Turkey, where it roughly symbolises "the back of beyond." Pamuk's hero Ka obviously alludes to Kafka's Joseph K - the lonely male hero entwined in a chaos of events beyond his control, which rules his life and actions. The Turkish name of the novel Kar (snow) carries that reference as well as a pun of the city name. The real Kars lies beyond the rapid development and increasing growth of modern Turkey, but is also at the centre of its historical identity crisis and rolling borders. Pamuk's Kars bears an important likeness to reality: The situation for women appears depressing. Despite the open-minded girls that address you in English in the streets, women's organisations active in the region speak about staying customs that ma

Not Really a Crossroads... but it's a possible turn
Yesterday while having morning coffee with my husband I asked him if he ever thought about the other two companies he was interested in when we accepted the position with this one about 2 1/2 years ago. He said it was funny, because he was just thinking about them this week himself. We didn't dwell on the subject, but it did make me wonder if perhaps he'll get into contact with them as we are

These Games often adopt a bird's eye perspective, giving the player the impression that he or she is in charge of developing the virtual world. God Games and other virtual worlds create persistent, open-ended worlds that may even develop without the intervention of a player, whose interventions, however, appear as god-like, supernatural activities in the realm of the virtual gaming world. Examples of successful God Games are Little Computer People Project, Populous, The Sims, Black & White or the upcoming Spore. Tod

Crossroads - Great Arizona Alcohol Rehabilitation
My name is Robin and I am an alcoholic. Though I am not a "graduate" of any treatment facility; the authorities just talked about "jail" when addressing me, I would like to recommend Crossroads in Phoenix as a great Arizona drug rehab and alcoholism treatment facility. I spend a lot of time at Crossroads and I can see that they care and run a tight ship. When I first moved to Phoenix in 2001, I was looking for men to help me unload the truck. I found out that I was living about a quarter mile from the "men's" Crossroads. They are an Arizona-certified transitional living facility specializing in helping men and women recover from drug addiction & alcoholism.I obtained the two men and they were a great help. Thus began a seven-year relationship with Crossroads. See... I don't like doing housework or yard work. So I go to Crossroads and pick up a couple of residents on a Saturday. I work with them and we talk Alcoholics Anonymous principals & recovery while getting my chores done much qu

Sober360 Blog - Crossroads, Arizona Drug & Alcohol Recovery
My name is Robin and I am an alcoholic. Welcome to the new Crossroads, Sober360, Blog! Tomorrow will be my 10th anniversary. I have been involved with Crossroads for six years. As soon as I moved to Phoenix I began attending Phoenix AA meetings there. Awhile back, my current job's office was there and I used to go to Crossroads to eat lunch and attend the noon alcoholic's anonymous meeting.Crossroads is a great place to find sobriety in Phoenix, Arizona. I like eating lunch there because it affords me the opportunity to meet my friends and hang out. I found my current AA Sponsor, Art T., there. That was a blessing.Recently, my office has moved to Paradise Valley and I don't get over to Crossroads as much. I've since moved my noon meeting to the Scottsdale Fellowship Group.Anyway, welcome to the blog!

Nepal’s young goddesses at modern crossroads
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The goddess likes to play with a toy cell phone when she’s blessing supplicants. Or blow up balloons. It’s tough to sit still on a throne answering people’s prayers all day when you’re only 10 years old. Sajani Shakya is one of several Nepali children designated living goddesses — kumaris — in the Kathmandu valley, where her people observe Buddhism with elements of Hinduism thrown in. She was identified by priests at age 2 as an incarnation of the Hindu goddess Kali and will be worshiped until she reaches puberty. Sajani and her fellow kumaris are the subjects of a documentary film that juxtaposes ancient tradition with contemporary political upheaval in Nepal, where a bloody civil war and a civilian uprising have challenged the country’s king and monarchy. For much of the day Sajani sits on a painted wooden throne in her family’s house in the town of Bhaktapur, wearing heavy black and red make-up and a red brocade

Crossroads Guitar Festival 2007 Tickets Go on Sale to the Public Today
I am totally excited that Eric Clapton’s collaboration show, the Crossroads Guitar Festival for 2007, is going to be held right here around Chicago. After seeing the DVD from the show back in 2004, I was a little down that I didn’t get to go, (it was in Texas and like now, I was in Chicago). There was a DVD released of it though that was great. My only disappointment is that the festival wasn’t available in its entirety either on DVD or CD, as there were a lot of artists who’s performances weren’t shown. Still, the DVD does features some great performances, some amazing jams featuring multiple artists and an action packed lineup from a range of genres. Now, tickets are on sale today for the 2007 edition of this festival on July 28th, so if you’re here in the Chicagoland area you can pickup tickets through Ticketmaster and a few other places I’m sure. They start at $90 (before all those ticketmaster fees of course). I am definitely going

As always, if you don't want to know what happened last night, avert your eyes.A few thoughts on last night's episode:* 2008?!? What the frak! What is this, The Sopranos?* I knew Kara wasn't gone.* Four out of five ain't bad when it comes to guessing who the mysterious Final Five are. I originally guessed that Ellen Tigh was the one of the five, but I may have to revise that claim in view of last night's ending. Now I'm thinking that maybe Kara might be a toaster. Of course, with my luck, the whole "do you hear music?" thing was probably the biggest head-fake in TV history and thus all of my guesswork will be invalidated.* Does this mean Tyrol's kid is also a hybrid as well?* Apollo gave the best. Speech. Ever. He had me almost feeling sorry for that slimy Baltar. At least, until Baltar opened his mouth again. * I haven't seen Tom Zarek in a while. Wonder what he's been up to.* Roslin, Athena, and Six make one hell of a Trinity.* Nine months. I can wait nin

      Battlestar Galactica Crossroads part 2
Battlestar Galactica Crossroads (part two) Once again the courtroom scenes are the best ones in the episode. Adama’s testimony was very logical and, in my view, correct. As president, Baltar didn’t intentionally persecute the human race; he resisted the best he could, as the flashback during Mr Gaita’s betrayal demonstrated. Baltar’s character has come full circle and is now, as in the beginning, a cowardly man concerned primarily with his own well-being, but one who occasionally attempts to do the right thing. Unfortunately, this is Battlestar Galactica and not Law and Order. The rest of the action was as unsatisfying as the rest of season three. We have the five sleeper Cylons. It’ll be kind of interesting to see how they deal with their new identity and I can’t say that I wasn’t surprised as their choice seemed odd; they were amongst the greatest defenders of the human race. The human race is once again faced with destruction. We&rs

      Battlestar Galactica Crossroads part one
Crossroads turned out to be the best episode since the escape from New Caprica. The improvement stems not as much from what it had as much as from something Crossroads lacked-romance. Instead, the episode’s main focus was the trial of Gaius Baltar and the courtroom scenes where that plot line played out were excellent. The writer’s came up with enough surprises to avoid predictability without resorting to cheap shock value. The actual issues involved in Baltar’s case, like whether he had any other choice available to him, are complicated and worthy of exploration. Baltar’s situation on New Caprica kind of reminds me more of France in 1940 than Iraq in 2004. I like the bridge created to future episodes with the introduction of Rosalyn’s hallucinations, the mysterious music, and the coming Cylon “storm.” The Adama vs. Adama conflict once again fails to create any worthwhile drama, but at least we were spared the other tormented relationships in

Rudd Crossroads 2003 Sonoma Valley Syrah
Rudd is renowned for their outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon, but did you know the make a great Syrah as well? The Rudd Crossroads 2003 Sonoma Valley Syrah has a dark, dense reddish/purple color in the glass, with tons on ripe, dark fruit and berries on the nose. Beautiful ripe berries on the palate again with some spice and sufficient acidity and firm tannins. We enjoyed this wine with baked spaghetti topped with flavorful tomato sauce and Italian meatballs. Thanks for a great dinner Robyn!I got it at the winery for $30 last summer, and could not find it online when looking for it tonight. If you can find it it is definitely worth a try.Prior to the Rudd Syrah we had a bottle of Vigneti Villafranca 2003 Castelli Romani Red Wine. Made from Sangiovese, Merlot and Montepulciano grapes, this wine has a bright ruby red color in the glass. Soft dark fruit and berries on the nose and very velvety fruit and smooth tannins on the palate. This wine is a very easy-to-drink wine and a crowd pleaser.

      Realtors at The Crossroads
This must be a particularly confusing and distressing time to be a Realtor, especially for some of the newer association members. On one hand, you have your own experience of witnessing the stark almost knee-jerk turnaround to the nations housing market showing sales of new and existing homes dropping like a rock while inventory and months supply climb to all time highs. On the other hand though, there is your associations trusted Chief Economist who, although sounding convincing, has just spent the better part of a year slowly massaging his outlook from "the sky's the limit" to "we've hit the bottom". What is a Realtor to do? Well, theres certainly no point in getting all depressed. Besides, that mood is not very conducive to sales. Instead, why not attend the National Association of Realtors annual Conference and Expo, be wooed by two former presidents and after knocking back one too many gin fizzes, slide into a nice soothing presentation of classic Lerenomics. Crossroads of the World
A couple of weekends ago, Tita Marie and I were sitting on a bench in the 61st Street Station in Woodside (Queens) on our way to see a movie at the AMC Theater in Times Square. Amidst our random topics of conversation while we waited for the train, she briefly mentioned Tita Cita (one of my mom's four sisters). Tita Cita died in the Philippines a few years ago from breast cancer and had lived in New York City a few times before the cancer made it impossible for her to continue working."You know," she said, "Your Tita Cita loved Times Square. Sometimes after work, she would get off the train in Times Square just so she could walk around and look at the buildings, the billboards and the lights."I tried to picture my aunt, before she was sick, taking a detour after a long week of work, exiting the subway and ascending the stairs into the crossroads of the world. Surely she had been tired and ready to get home, but undoubtedly she was often lured from the tunnels by the excitement of the

      Crossroads
Current Mood: annoyed | I’m sick of being afraid (shit - terrified) of change and happiness. I’m scared to have happiness mostly because I’m more scared of losing it when I find it, so I keep it away - as far away as humanly possible - in hopes that whatever I don’t experience can’t hurt me. I’m so oblivious, in the long run it hurts worse. “Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure.” - Helen Keller Maybe there is truth to the old adage, “tis better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all.” When going through heartbreak(s) I thought that phrase was the most retarded thing I ever heard. Now, years later, I wouldn’t have traded those loves for anything in the world. Still, I would have changed the outcome of my relationship with Erick. I’m haunted with regret and bittersweet memories because of our love. I don’t understand how one person can alter the rest of another person’s life so much. Sometimes, I go days, weeks,

      Toyota’s Image at the Crossroads
For the last few years, the American public has embraced Toyota's products as clean, durable and efficient. Exhibit A: the demure Camry, which has maintained its position as America’s favorite automobile. Exhibit also A: the Hybrid Synergy Driven Prius; the poster child for environmentally and foreign policy-conscious consumers. No surprise, then, that Toyota's been held up as America's responsible automaker, the one who doesn't bitch and moan about federal regulations, but just puts its head down and does the right thing. And makes money doing it! And then Toyota released the new Tundra.
