Agyness Deyn has followed the Kelly Osbourne route of slicking her short hair down into a side parting, a look that is proving very popular.

Fall Planting – Fall Crops & Winter Storage Sadly, too many of us are tired of our gardens by fall, often because weeds have taken over, or because we planted the wrong things and we can’t even get rid of them. I suggest we take another look at it, because gardening in the fall can be very productive, and will give you fresh vegetables well into the winter, if they are grown and stored properl

Reading through all the news about the global food crisis, I lacked one thing: the solution to this problem or even the slightest hint to one.In many discussion fora and through comments on social bookmarking sites, it was often suggested that genetically modified (GM) crops, said to yield a higher production, and to be more pest-resistant, could mean the solution to world hunger.I started to search around for more info on genetically modified organism (GMO) or genetically engineered organism (GEO), and came across several posts referring to a video called "The World According to Monsanto" by a French independent filmmaker, Marie-Monique Robin. The movie researches the credibility of (or rather lack thereof) US based Monsanto, one of the biggest chemical companies in the world and the provi

French GMO bill passes lower house of parliament - Toughens penalties for deliberately damaging GMO crops
The lower house of the French parliament approved a new law on genetically modified crops on Wednesday after fierce opposition criticism and internal wrangling in the ranks of the centre-right government. After a vote of 249 in favour of and 228 against the proposed law, intended to bring French legislation into line with European Union directives, the bill will now go to the Senate for a second reading on April 16. The law is aimed at fixing the conditions under which genetically modified (GMO) crops may be cultivated in France, where many regard them with deep suspicion. Europe has demanded that member states formulate domestic laws on GMO use since 2001 but France has dragged its feet over an issue that is fiercely disputed by supporters including the main farmers union and env

INNOVATIVE IMAGE EDITOR: It crops & resizes intelligently!
I usually put cool web-based resources and tools in my “cool web resources” area - located on the lower left of this blog. But this tool takes the possibilities of our image-based branding to a whole new level. As someone who often helps edit and enhance images, this web-based image editor is impressive not only in its results - but in its innovative process: It’s hard to fully explain what Rsizr (as in “resizer”) can do for your photos. Their blog image gallery (cool layout, btw) quickly shows the possibilities.  I appreciate the behind-the-scenes video (below) that shows HOW this technology works! Sometimes when new services seem “too good to be true,” or seem “just like” something else, it’s good to get a little technical. GM crops: "Point of no return in 10 years"
Monsanto announced that Europe will increase its genetically modified crop area by 50,000-100,000 hectares per year over the next decade, which will bring GMO's to "the point of no return," according to Monsanto's director Michael Duhamel.French farmers have sown 25,000 hectares of GMO maize, modified to resist insect pests. This despite the fact that French consumers are fiercely opposed to modified crops. Duhamel is quoted as saying, "Consumers receive false information on what GMO crops are, so they are afraid. But I'm sure that within ten years they will have accepted them."Let's hope not. Independent studies are cropping up, showing the potential for devastating effects of GMO's on the human biology, such as the case of the pest-resistant peas that were found to cause lung damage in mice.In another study, more than half of the rats fed with our U.S. grown modified soy died within three weeks, and six times as many pups with below average birth we

      GM crops are not OK
As we've seen recently with the pet food fiascos, our food supply may not be safeguarded as well as we thought. Not even close. The documentary The Future of Food discusses some the political, health and social consequences of a corporate food complex run roughshod over the public good, with the silent assent of our government. My sister recently unearthed an article from a year ago, detailing just one way that Genetically Modified foods may represent a cure that's worse than the disease. In the case of Liberty Herbicide (marketed as Basta, Ignite, Rely, Finale and Challenge), GM crops are embedded with genes that produce an enzyme that converts their herbicide to a non-toxic variant called NAG (N-acetyl-L-glufosinate). With each subsequent spraying, NAG accumulates within the plants. The problem is that when these crops are consumed, some of it may be converted back into toxic herbicide. It is believed that gut bacteria, primarily found in the colon or rectum, are responsible for this

Does Donating GMO Crops to End Hunger Make Any Sense?
The Gates and Rockefeller Foundations have announced they will donate $150 million to reform African agriculture and “end hunger.” Reform, in this case, means supplying them with GMO crops created by Monsanto. Monsanto is the creator of the perverse “terminator seed,” which refuses to grow for more than a season and renders seeds useless for replanting—effectively destroying the most basic and fundamental law of nature and instrument of farming. Last year, the Gates Foundation hired Robert Horsch as senior program officer for Africa. Horsch is the former VP of Monsanto, which also invented what the media here calls the “biotech” industry. It’s just a fancy name for the business of patenting natural life forms, which the U.S. patent office began allowing in the 1990s. Overseas they call it “biopiracy.” How much will it cost Africa to maintain these initially “free” GMO crops? How many Africans will die from starvation when they can’t afford to pay for new GM
