I thought, I will don the hat of a critic and criticize the Fountainhead book. Note that if you have not read the book you might not understand some parts of this post, you can skip them as they are totally unnecessary. You might as well move to the last paragraph of the post, which is important, if you are going to read the book. So, coming back, if I have to describe the book in one word –

So my sister and I went to this play reading yesterday. We were some of the people who read, but the purpose of the event was for the writer to get feedback. (There is a name for this, but I am not in the play world, so I don't know it!)Anyhoo, it was a really interesting and valuable experience because the writer got tons of really insightful comments. I think if you did enough of those, you'd get a lot of good feedback even if it wasn't specifically directed to YOUR play. It just makes me remember what an important learning tool that is for dancers. When I start teaching again, I will be sure to offer that opportunity again for my students. (Coming soon to a studio near you!)

This is Tori and her cute gelding Iza Hot Shot. This picture was taken at the NY State Fair in 2007, where she was showing him in Western Pleasure. You may remember this pair from the Showmanship Pivot Critique.In a Western Pleasure Class, the horse is judged as opposed to the rider. Tori’s gelding is perfectly turned out, and I do like her choice in color for her clothing, it complements her horse well.Even though this is not an equitation class where the rider is being judged, good equitation is always necessary to help the horse stay happy. A good Western Pleasure horse is a happy horse.Notice the horse’s expression, he is slightly irritated. It appears Tori is asking him to move closer to the rail, and he would have preferred to stay where he was. What would help him to be
Anyone who knows me knows that I am not the most girly in the world. Up until a few weeks ago, I was still wearing my make up (and by make up, I mean brown eyeliner, mascara, and lip gloss) the same way I was when I was 18.
Beauty stuff intimidates me.
There I said it.
Fashion does too, but that’s a post for another time.
And I once had a boyfriend beg me to be a little more girly… bought me all kinds of smelly stuff and would suggest things, but I just didn’t “get it”.
I’ve had friends drag me to Sephora (when I lived near one) and try on all kinds of goop for my face… and I just felt so weird.
Over time, I’ve hated feeling like a “mom”. There’s nothing wrong with being a mom, but let’s face it… I’m no

The first thing that jumps out at me is that for jumping her stirrups are very long. As the horse jumps you want to be able to clear your butt out of the saddle, and the easiest way to do this is by having

What I would suggest is that she outfits her horse in some Sleezy Sleepwear the night before to allow the mane to lie more flat t
Rachel Carson was born just over 100 years ago in 1907. Her most famous book Silent Spring, published in 1962, is often seen as marking the birth of the modern environmental movement. Although an immense amount has been written about Carson and her work, the fact that she was objectively a “woman of the left” has often been downplayed. Today the rapidly accelerating planetary ecological crisis, which she more than anyone else alerted us to, calls for an exploration of the full critical nature of her thought and its relation to the larger revolt within science with which she was associated. Carson was first and foremost a naturalist and scientist. But she was propelled by her understanding of the destructive ecological forces at work in modern society into the role of radical

I went window shopping in Old Town Alexandria last week after work and found one of the cutest boutiques ever. Hidden in a row of restaurants and law firms on King Street is a boutique called American in Paris, a women's clothing boutique owned by Joelle, a cute, stylish Parisian woman. Upon entering the store, Joelle gave me the one minute schpeel on clothing perusing etiquette. She instructed each new vistor to touch the clothes by the hanger and gentle feel the fabric, which meant the clothes were all in mint condition...GENIOUS, I thought.I felt like I was in my closet. Clothes were neatly organized on hangers, some were drapped over chairs in front of a big mirror, and shoes were neatly arranged on shelves. The boutique serves the DC fashionista who wants to spend money on a great qu

Call for papers for a themed issue of the journal Culture, Theory and Critique to be published in April 2009.Democratic aesthetics: actual, radical, global.Since Walter Benjamin equated aestheticized politics with fascism and war, projects to conduct politics aesthetically generally have been regarded as inimical to democracy. Yet, given the role of the US as a hegemonic world power exporting democracy by force of arms, it is timely to re-examine the potential of productive relations between aesthetics and democratic politics. There are many different notions of “aesthetics,” ranging from a philosophical discourse about art (often understood as distinct cultural practices, objects, experiences, perceptions and judgments), to its original broader sense (by Baumgarten) of the study of se

I am writing this 'mini-post' because I know that many people don't necessarily have the time to read the comments that others have made. A few days ago, I wrote about "Image Critique", and recommended the monthly photo review available on Alain Briot's website. As a response to that post, Chris Sheppard pointed out that Craig Tanner of "The Radiant Vista" posts a daily image review entitled "The Daily Critique" , which is available in multiple formats. I have just started listening to some of these and, like Alain's reviews, they are also extremely worthwhile. I plan to to tune in to them regularly as well. Definitely worth a listen!

Despite the proliferation of social networking and photography related websites, I believe it remains difficult to get well thought out and constructive critiques of one's images. There are probably many reasons for this. Some that immediately come to mind include:The time needed to critically evaluate and write up one's thoughts about an image.The expertise and ability to critically evaluate an image beyond the basics.The desire not to feel like you are insulting the creator of the image (ie, being nice).And, unfortunately, there is, I suspect, a real issue with wanting to favorably critique an image in order to have the favor returned.However, the fact is that in order to grow and progress as a photographer and artist one needs critical and constructive evaluations of their work. I would much rather have someone give me thoughtful and carefully considered negative feedback about an image than a quick 'great shot' comment. Certainly, after receiving such feedback I put much more t

Dead Man's View Across the Duck Pond. Everyone accepts death but I doubt anyone accepts bad medical treatment and humiliation prior to death. Papworth NHS Trust has always been the centre of clinical excellence. As such it should behave in a way compatible with that title. There is no doubt Papworth NHS Trust used to do some good work for some ill people but their reputation has now got to their head. Indeed, these days they consider themselves the best in the field, so much so that they do not have to take criticism. Papworth NHS Trust has never been able to accept criticism or fault. They also lack transparency because it is all about trading on the reputation of the past. The hospital has this attitude as do the staff. Infact, they think nothing of telling untruths to cover their misdemeanors. That in a nutshell is Papworth NHS Trust. It is much like the Picture of Dorian Gray. They pride themselves in their vanity. The critique below is a number of issues raised by four doctors in
When any discipline of knowledge reaches its zenith, it is quite likely to begin to talk of God. This is true, as the foregoing pages make out not only of Whitehead but also of many other scientists, the latest of them being Stephen Hawking, the celebrated author of the best seller, A Brief History of Time. Like Whitehead, he too comes conceptually in the lineage of Einstein. If Whitehead developed the philosophy of process out of Einstein’s theory of relativity, Stephen Hawking evolved his cosmology out of the same theory of relativity. And just as Whitehead struck on the idea of God speculatively while explaining the reality in terms of process, even so Stephen Hawking happened to refer to the idea of God particularly as a matter of protest against the guarded warning of Pope, while tracing the origin of the universe ultimately to the primeval incident known as the Big Bang. In course of attending a conference on cosmology organised by the Jesuits in the Vatican in 1981, and being

Author: Matthew RatcliffePaperback: 256 pagesPublisher: Palgrave Macmillan (February 6, 2007)Language: EnglishISBN: 0230007104(R)This book proposes a series of interconnected arguments against the view that interpersonal understanding involves the use of a 'folk' or 'commonsense' psychology. Ratcliffe suggests that folk psychology, construed as the attribution of internal mental states in order to predict and explain behaviour, is a theoretically motivated and misleading abstraction from social life. He draws on phenomenology, neuroscience and developmental psychology to offer an alternative account that emphasizes patterned interactions between people in shared social situations.
It was nice to hear from a colleague of mine (we both served congregations in Utica Presbtery), Bob Campbell. Bob now pastors a church in Pennsylvania. Utica Presbytery was a moderate to liberal presbytery, I would guess, at that time. Bob spoke eloquently and with style on behalf of the evangelical voice there. While now and then we found ourselves voting on different sides of an issue, I was impressed that Bob knew what it meant to be a "colleague in ministry." I will leave this up for now, then respond later. John,You may or may not remember me. We were fellow members of Utica Presbytery back in the ‘90’s. I was at Oneida 1st when you were at Lowville. I’ve read your letters on Presbyweb over the past few years. Maybe you have read mine too. Actually I was thinking about you last night, about sending you an email. Hello everyone,
Happily I am still plugging away, having some fun, getting some work in, and getting the work out. As already mentioned, I will not be doing much with the blog at all until late in the year.
Still when time permits, I visit various sites/blogs and there is much inspiration to be found.
Really cool stuff out there!
The “Self Critique Project” that I started some weeks ago will be added to an entirely different blog.
With this particular WordPress template, I never could get the different or various pages to work like I wanted them to which would keep the SCP seperate from the main page, … so, … a different blog will be created instead.
Will keep you up to date on that!

Throughout the time I've been writing on this blog I've been fortunate not to have encountered any trolls lurking in my comments section. Instead, most comments from theists have been thoughtful and productive. Recently, I just received a extremely thoughtful comment from Jesse V. in response to my recent post concerning evidence. In that post, I was mostly concerned with evidence in the purely scientific sense. However, Jesse's argument is from the historical perspective, using the available sources concerning particular events. Luckily, I majored in history, so I feel more than up to the challenge of debating Jesse's points.Before getting into the history, Jesse says:For example, can you prove what word I said yesterday at 12:52pm? No, not by the scientific method. The best you can do is ask those who were around me, IF there was anyone around me. At that point you are relying on the testimony of witnesses, which is not perfect, since someone may have forgotten what I said,
Critiquing the photos of others can be difficult, but critiquing your own work is downright near-impossible. It’s easy to point out the good points of a photo you’ve taken, but the bad points are another story — especially if it’s a photo you really like.
Mike Brown at “Macro Art In Nature” is asking us to do just that — pick your best photo (flora/foliage closeup) and self critique it. He’s turned this into a group project that he coined “The Self Critique Project“. If you’re interested in participating, head over there and read the rules.
At first, I thought it would be no problem picking out one photo and critiquing it. I’ve spent the last several days going back and forth between 2 or 3 photos, unable to pick what I consider the best. It’s a very hard thing to do. Nevertheless, I’ve managed to choose just one. On with the critique…

Can you sit down, … actually go through all of your images, … and give those images and even you yourself a good “hard & honest” critique?
Can you narrow down all of your images to just one image, … your best?
It is something that I think everyone should learn how to

Movie critiques can be easily confused with movie reviews. However, movie reviews give a personal impression while criticizing means giving some practical advice. In our turn, we want to give you some practical advice on writing a good movie critique. We studied the resources available online, extended them with our professional writing tips, and now give them to you.
1. Writing a Movie Critique. How to Begin
Definition:
A critique names specific things that make a movie (or screenplay) work, or not work, so that the creator can improve.
General guidelines:
- choose a movie;
- narrow your critiques down to a certain point;
- now watch it once more, paying attention to the points that come into your sphere of evaluation interest;
- take notes;
- be specific;
- be objective;
Our tips on writing a movie critique:
Criticizing doesn’t mean spilling negative emotions. Too much pessimism will kill any reader’s desire to get closely acquainted with your writing. Even tho

Today professional critiques are a way to earn money. There are specialized magazines and TV-shows. Critique writing also is on the list of academic writing requirements. But its' original goal was somewhat different.
The era of Renaissance was the time for arts to bloom. However, the influence of Church on public opinion was still enormous. An example with French drama is one of the most obvious ones. Great master of comedy, French dramatist Jean-Baptiste Molière was one of the few people to bring the genre back to life after it was labeled anti-Christian with the collapse of pagan religion. His plays were brilliant, critical, and up-to-date. His protector was King Louis XIV. He adored Jean-Baptiste's works, and even granted him a spacious room in Louvre, appointed for theatrical performances. However, after Molière wrote his comedy Tartuffe or the Hypocrite, which criticized the Church greatly, he became the number-one public enemy in the eyes of the priests. Molière received
It is the writer's blessing and the writer's bane—receiving critique from other authors. Many talk about the writer's responsibility in receiving critique. Don't argue, don't rationalize, swallow your pride, develop a thick skin, try not to take it personally. But what about the person providing the critique? Is he or she free to say whatever comes to mind, even if it's harsh, unhelpful, incorrect, or just plain mean? I'd venture that all writers know how to read, but not all know how to read well, much less offer a useable critique. Following are the first of the ten most important responsibilities of the critical reader: 1. Don't be Nice, but Do be Good. What's the difference? "Nice†is telling Aunt Edna the red dress with the polka dots looks Great! Perfect for family portraits! Just perfect! "Good†is gently telling Auntie that polka dots might not be the best idea. Try the yellow dress instead, and has she seen the new gym down the street? Maybe she coul
