Prior to the in the late 19th century, before the emergence of modernism, when skill, technical prowess and accuracy were the factors used to determine how good a painting was, the role of the art critic was quite clearly defined because of the clearly defined factors and principles that were used to determine whether an artwork was good or not . Now that artists are producing such a wide variety of works that no longer conform to any sort of clearly defined or universally accepted standards, guidelines or conventions, the role and purpose of the art critic has come into question. Artistic trends and movements are coming and going quicker than ever and artists are constantly experimenting with new mediums and different techniques in order to achieve vastly different goals and results which has resulted in the task of properly critiquing most artworks almost impossible.

Of course, if you ask almost any gamer, they’ll whole-heartedly disagree with that position, in my opinion all you gotta do is look at a game like Okami and wonder how anyone could NOT consider it art. I mean you can’t even create a video game nowadays without having whole teams of ARTISTS on board . . . but anyhoo, it is true that us gamers would be biased given that our favorite medium is once again being called illegitimate by no less than a movie critic . . . Main theme, is great art possible today, especially in painting? Or is it at best a clever satirical footnote. He seem to think it is the latter. The second surprise on TV this week was seeing Giles Coren, food critic of the Times fronting an advert for Bird’s Eye. I enjoy many of Coren’s articles and was horrified to see him as the face of a big bland food company. His columns stand for fresh, local, organic, sustainable food, small producers, knowing the name of the cow you are eating. However you cut it , advertising for Bird’s eye is a strange choice. Maybe he knows something we don’t.

John Orman, a political science professor that “bitterly protested” Senator Joe Lieberman’s switch from the Democratic Party to the “Connecticut for Lieberman” Party, has switched parties and elected himself chairman.
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - The party Sen. Joe Lieberman created to mount his independent re-election campaign has been seized by one of his critics, and the secretary of state’s office said Wednesday that it won’t challenge the takeover.
After the senator’s Nov. 7 victory under the Connecticut for Lieberman Party banner, John Orman switched his party affiliation from Democrat to Connecticut for Lieberman and voted himself chairman.
