Former college footballer Gov. Charlie Crist, never one to pass up a good football rivalry, is even more pumped than usual about Saturday's UF-FSU game in Gainesville.
That's because UF is taking steps to offset the greenhouse gases produced by the game, and Crist is on a big conservation push in recent months.

Gov. Charlie Crist this morning declared September "College Savings Month," and he's urging families to consider the state's popular Florida Prepaid College Plan, which allows families to lock in today's tuition rates and pay toward it now - even if their kids are years away from attending a state university.
"By planning ahead, college is affordable," Crist, an FSU grad, said in a prepared statement. "Even small amounts of savings, done regularly, add up over time.”
Florida Prepaid has sold over 1.2-million plans since the program began 19 years ago.
Gov. Charlie Crist's recently formed Council on Physical Fitness, part of his efforts to make schoolchildren and older Floridians more healthy and active, will be in town Thursday and Friday for its first meetings.
Thursday the council meets from 3:30 to 6 p.m. at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers training facility, 3302 W. Gov. Charlie "Green" Crist capped off a week focused on energy-saving, climate improvement initiatives with a visit Friday to the SRI Wave Energy Buoy project at USF's Knight Oceanographic Research Center in St. Petersburg.
The SRI project aims to produce electric power from ocean waves. The California-based company's prototype is a cylindrical device surrounded by a rubbery material that SRI researchers call an "artificial muscle." It's strapped to a buoy in the waters of Tampa Bay, about one mile east of downtown St. Petersburg, so that researchers can measure how much electricity the waves generate.
Researchers think hundreds of “artificial muscles” could, together, create a thousand watts of power.
Gov. Warford, who now heads the Florida Association of School Administrators, to
Gov. Charlie Crist included three state university academicians on his new Energy Action Team, a 21-member group created to develop Florida’s Energy and Climate Change Action Plan - part of the Republican governor's recent environmental push.
Dr. Lonnie Ingram, professor of microbiology at the University of Florida; Camille Coley, executive assistant vice president for research at Florida Atlantic University; and James Fenton, of the University of Central Florida's Solar Energy Center, will serve on the team.
They have until October 2008 to come up with proposals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and finding alternative fuel sources.

Gov. Charlie Crist met with the heads of Florida's universities this morning and agreed to sign a controversial piece of legislation that creates a tiered tuition system for Florida's top three research universities.
The bill would allow UF and FSU to charge incoming undergraduates up to 40 percent more than the base tuition for state universities starting this coming fall. USF could charge up to 30 percent more. The revenue, over $20-million for each college by 2010, would allow the universities to improve their crowded bachelor's degree programs by hiring additional professors and academic counselors.
Crist said he was willing to sign it if universities were willing to delay implementation until 2008, giving the Legislature time to come up with an opportunity, and money, that would negate the need for such a system.

Yep, y'all, I reckon I got me an OK deal at the thrift store today.I ended up squandering almost half of my Florida Lottery scratch-off winnings for this week on used books, confound it.But I walked out of that shop with some fantastic titles in a plastic Winn-Dixie bag for a grand total of 39 cents, starting with The Florida Handbook 1991-1992 by Allen Morris, originally valued at $39.95, and a first edition of the late Shel Silverstein's very first book for young'uns, Lafcadio: the Lion Who Shot Back.Now, I've got to tell y'all, Lafcadio doesn't look like it's even close to the same condition it was in when it first hit the shelves in 1963, and its dust jacket is long gone, but so what? Shel Silverstein wrote it, the same feller who wrote "A Boy Named Sue" and "The Cover of the Rolling Stone." That alone makes my tattered copy easily worth 10 times -- maybe 15 times -- what I paid for it, even with the turquoise rubber-stamped sow with "Nana T." handwritten in Magic Marker on
Unlike his predecessor, who would invoke numbers and trends when weighing in on the test, former education commissioner and now Gov. Crist went the short and non-specific route. Almost sounds as if he could have said these words regardless of the results, which, you will see, he didn't mention at all. Here's the released statement:
"I continue to believe that strong reading skills lay the groundwork needed for success in school, in our economy and in life. That is why I believe a reading coach is needed in every school to ensure that teachers are equipped to help students read better.
"As more third graders perform at or above grade level in mathematics, we see evidence that holding schools accountable for student achievement improves student learning. The future is bright for these students. By building strong math skills early on, students have a better opportunity for success in a career path that focuses on math, such as science or engineering."

Gov. Charlie Crist is open to reviewing the FCAT standards in high school, where the state asks students to jump a much higher bar than in the lower grade levels. It's a pet issue for the Hillsborough Superintendent MaryEllen Elia, who brought it up during a nearly half-hour meeting Monday with Crist in Tallahassee.
The district has found that 10th graders just meeting the state's standards rank in the top 20 percent of students nationally. At lower grades, students making the FCAT bar perform far less well compared to their peers nationally. Third-graders, for example, place just above the bottom third.
"I am willing to listen to further talk," Crist said. "If there are always ways that we can make it, you know, better, why wouldn't we?"

Pundits say Gov. Charlie Crist has distanced himself from the education policies of his lightning-rod predecessor, Jeb Bush. But there was Crist this afternoon, standing before a rally of 4,000 people in Tallahassee and proclaiming his support for a Jeb pet project: private-school vouchers. "We have a responsibility to ensure that all children, regardless of the financial resources of their parents, have the opportunity to realize their full potential," Crist said, according to a press release from the pro-voucher group that sponsored the rally. "Every child in Florida deserves an equal opportunity to obtain a high-quality education." Is the self-proclaimed people's governor out of step with "the people" on this one? (Not sure? Warren served one term an' didn't win a bid for re-election to the office in 1956, but I reckon the political experience he gained before movin' into the Governor's Mansion -- he served in the Florida Legislature an' on the Jacksonville City Council -- made him plenty of a winner to know enough to write a 205-page book on the subject.While in office, Gov. There's a number of revealing points expressed by the author Farhad Manjoo. He seems to be shocked that a Republican might do something that will increase the number of Democrat voters. This says one of two things. 1) Either he has such a low opinion of conservatives (what a shocker that would be) he can't picture them doing what they consider the right thing just because they think its the right thing or 2) He can't imagine anyone doing the right thing. TALLAHASSEE - Invoking the name of his fifth grade teacher at Bay Vista Elementary in St. Petersburg, Gov. Charlie Crist on Thursday signed into law the new teacher bonus plan that replaces the controversial one passed last year under former Gov. Jeb Bush.
"We're going to pay teachers more," said Crist, beaming as he addressed the packed Cabinet room filled with lawmakers, teachers and education lobbyists. "And we're going to do it in a way that's different from last year. That's important."
The bonuses would go to the "top" teachers and administrators in each participating school district, and would be between 5 and 10 percent of the average district teacher pay. An educator's evaluation would be based at least 60 percent on students' work on tests such as FCAT or a locally created test, and up to 40 percent on performance such as maintaining classroom discipline.
