From the New York Times:
Habits are a funny thing. We reach for them mindlessly, setting our brains on auto-pilot and relaxing into the unconscious comfort of familiar routine. “Not choice, but habit rules the unreflecting herd,” William Wordsworth said in the 19th century. In the ever-changing 21st century, even the word “habit” carries a negative connotation.
So it seems antithetical to talk about habits in the same context as creativity and innovation. But brain researchers have discovered that when we consciously develop new habits, we create parallel synaptic paths, and even entirely new brain cells, that can jump our trains of thought onto new, innovative tracks.
Rather than dismissing ourselves as unchangeable creatures of habit, we can instead direct our own change by co

Months ago, I watched the documentary Jesus Camp. I went into this movie knowing that the hair on the back of my neck would stand up. I liken it to a fire and brimstone sermon for agnostics and atheists. One character in this tale definitely stood out. Ted Haggard has the slick gloss of Madison Avenue combined with the religious fervor of the Deep South. He's the sort of preacher you thought died when televangelism fell on it's hard days in the late 1980s plagued by scandals. Such a peculiar creature captured my interest. Who was he? Why did people follow him? This lead to a web search to learn more. The result shocked me. Check out his life story here:

A Mongolian yurt, luxury tented cabin, wooden wigwam, or plain old pup tent... wherever you choose to roll out your sleeping bag know that (just like caravanning), camping is cool. Or so the media has been insisting for a while now. More Brits were taking their tents to the country than ever before, BBC News told us in April 2006, raising the question “So how did camping become cool?” in ‘Why the

Photographer Andrew Zuckerman's strikingly detailed images of animals from around the world are as delightful as they are inspiring. This collection of astonishing studio portraits of 175 wild creatures from baby leopards to parrots, bears, mandrills, and many more are stunningly foregrounded against white backgrounds, depicting their subjects with rare sensitivity, insight, humor, and wonder. Zuckerman also an up-and-coming filmmaker, whose first short film, High Falls, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2007 has created a volume perfect for animal lovers, photography fans, and anyone fascinated by the world around us. New post over at Mommy Daddy Blog courtesy of Greg. Please excuse him! I didn’t want him cursing at ALL for numerous reasons. I just don’t want people to get turned off but at the same time I would like to have fun with the blog without seeming uptight. Don’t hesitate to comment, utilize the bookmark buttons, or subscribe to our feed. I do ask that no one curses in the comments, lol. We plan on running the blog until we’re old and grey, it isn’t something that will sit or disappear once the kids get older. That being said, we want it to be successful.
Now to the title of this post, there is some type of animal trying to get into our house. It comes late at night and starts scratching on the sides of the house. It’ll scurry across the porch, scratch, then come around to the back of the house and scratch some more. Simba is determined to figure out what it is. My guess is a raccoon or a cat that I TRIED to bring in over the summer but the ungrateful th
TAGLINE What was the unspeakable secret of the sea of lost ships? Please do not give away the answer to the secret. THE PLOT Sparks Moran, aka Agent XK150, goes undercover inside the Capetto gang in order to prevent the criminals from smuggling a group of Cuban exiles, as well as a sizeable portion of Cuba's treasury, out of the country. To carry out the deed Capeto assembles a motley crew of thugs including Mary Belle Monahan (who sings the film's haunting theme song), her brother "Happy" Jack Monahan (who, of course, never smiles), and Pete Peterson Jr. (a man capable of communicating only through the use of animal impressions). It isn't long before Sparks stumbles upon the eeevil Capetto's real plan to kill the Cubans, keep the money, and blame the whole thing on a legendary monster which supposedly lives in the nearby waters. Everything goes according to plan until the real monster shows up and starts laying waste to the entire cast. Can Spark's incredible powe

It's hard to come up with valid articles that deals with fantasy. The reason being that there isn't much in the realm of fantasy to really talk about that hasn't already been discussed to death. I will certainly discuss things if they come up in a comment, but generally I think you can find the myriad of debates already out there with a simple Google search. But I've found something interesting that I think will be of use to you fantasy writers out there. It could also be good for an SF or even horror writer, but since I took some influence from a similar thing I would like to point you all to this Top 15 list of unusual deep sea creatures. I know I said no links, but this is an actual post, not just a collection of links for you to check out. The interesting thing about that list is that everything looks so alien, yet they're really from this planet. You can imagine the bizarre, even freaky possibilities of a fantasy world if you

It has been a week since I last posted on my blog. I feel like such a slacker, especially with many bloggers posting every day for NaBloPoMo. But it just goes to prove that I am a creature of habit. Once outside my usual routine and/or habitat things deteriorate quickly.
A little vacation time plus company holidays meant quite a few days away from my office. After one week of not spending 8+ hours per day sitting in an ergonomic office chair almost every day has my back completely out of whack. My muscles are a bit confused and feeling overworked. At least the microwavable hot packs are helping that situation. This is a fact about my body that I have come to know and accept. A bit ouchie, but expected.
My new discovery is related to blogging. In particular it is about when I blog. I compose most of my blog posts while waiting for processes to complete at work or after Princess has gone to bed at night. Days away from my lovely back saving chair has also meant days
For about two measures, discordant piano notes call and respond with its higher octave keys, reminding me of The Pearls composed by Jelly Roll Morton. It's as if two sides of thought are conversing with each other, a tete-a-tete of some sort, as the ascension and immediate descension then produce an accretion of appropriate melody, ornamenting and setting the stage for Emi Meyer to make her appearance. The lyrics are suited for the seemingly poppy-yet-dark backdrop of minor keys. Jazz vocalists were the first in Western music to sing their own lyrics, (as opposed to classical traditions), and Emi Meyer does her part. The song talks of a "curious creature" otherwise known as an angel (or possibly herself), that has either fallen, or is lost in some manner. And the chorus with its repetition of a rhetorical question, "What do you think of me?" ironically makes the listener the curious creature instead. Nothing makes Jazz more complete than improvisation; the song ends with the piano dec

And two thirds of the way through the movie, the monster shows up.I'm nearly speechless. For a monthly film club, The B-Movie Catechism has caused a number of people to watch Roger Corman's Creature from the Haunted Sea, available at Google Video. Sadly, this is not the worst movie I've seen recently. To make a longer-than necessary story short, it's Cuba and Castro has come to power. Counter-revolutionaries, dreaming of recapturing their country, have made off with the Cuban treasury and have cooked up a scheme that sounds like one of those Nigerian e-mail scams: they promise an American gangster that if he'll take half the Cuban treasury out of the country on his yacht, they'll let him keep a tenth of it.The gangster, of course, wants the whole thing. To keep it, he'll have to find a way to off all the bumbling Cuban soldiers who are traveling on his yacht with him. To do that, he cooks up a scheme with his oddball cronies to create a fake sea monster that will kill the Cuban s

Stoneware Gargoyle tile and moldAmong the many things I found after my studio remodel was a tile mold of a bored gargoyle sitting below a rose window in a cathedral. I made this in 1997 in a 3-D design class when we were making cast paper reliefs. Why I chose a gargoyle, is beyond me. It's not a subject I normally gravitate towards. At any rate, I decided to try casting a clay tile from my paper mold to see how it turns out. It was bisque fired yesterday, so I should be able to take a peek later today. After doing a wee bit of research - and I mean wee - Wikipedia was my source- I found out that the word gargoyle comes from the French word gargouille, which translates to throat or gullet. Delve a little further into Latin and it refers to gurgling water. Gargoyles were often placed on Churches to redirect water away from the building. Decorative or non-functioning gargoyles are really grotesques, or strange, fantastical creatures that are pure adornment on buildings. If you wa

Earlier this year Universal Pictures green lighted a remake of Creature From The Black Lagoon. A short while later Guillermo del Toro was confirmed as the director, giving hope for a quality remake. Now Guillermo del Toro is officially out as the director of the Creature remake. That's unfortunate because del Toro has yet to create anything that stinks, spending as much time between projects writing and storyboarding until he feels it is ready. The new director for Creature is Breck Eisner, who's biggest claim to fame so far (besides being the son of Michael Eisner) is directing the Matthew McConaughey film, Sahara. The script is by Gary Ross, who wrote and directed Seabiscuit and Pleasantville. If you want a very early review of Ross's script, including spoilers, you can find it here. Keep in mind any script this early is certain to have rewrites.Creature is now in pre-production with a release date set for sometime in 2008. With the filming yet to start and a heavy slate of superher

The headline on this article about bdelloid rotifers from the BBC was “Eighty Million Years Without Sex” and immediately my heart went out to this poor bastard of a pond dweller. Then it turns out that the reasons it’s survived so long is in fact because it doesn’t have sex and it’s genes eventually adapt, causing it to survive. So what’s that mean?
It’s just more evidence that humanity will eventually be completely screwed because we’re naturally horny. But hey, we might’ve found the newest government talking point on why abstinence works.

Serials! I love 'em. What was once standard movie fare in the silent era is enjoying a resurgence on the internet as of late. These feature short chapters of a longer story, released on a consistent basis until the story is played out. Each chapter would find our hero(es) in some impossible scenario from which there appeared no escape. Hanging from a cliff was one such example, and is the origin of the word 'cliffhanger'. This plot device ensured the audience would return to see what happened, and is still used today. It's also a great way to market a film.Last week I received an email from one Joshua Sikora who told me about a couple of new serialized movies he was producing on the aptly named webserials.com. He mentioned that he got some good press from YouTube, and was excited to compete with the larger-budgeted fare being released by those with bigger pockets. Interested, I gave Joshua's movies a look-see, and was nicely surprised. The two films are of different genres, namely
Dear Friend of the Ocean, I am writing to you with very exciting news for the Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL)--and especially for the coral reefs and myriad rare species found in the archipelago of Raja Ampat. For the next 30 days, CORAL Board member, Dr. Jim Foght, will match every contribution supporting our work in Raja Ampat--dollar for dollar--up to $25,000. Please act now to double the impact of your gift. As you know, Raja Ampat is home to one of the most pristine reefs in the world with 450 species of hard coral, 600 mollusk species, and as many as 1,100 fish species--including a newly discovered shark that walks on it's fins! But crushing poverty has pushed some local fisherman to use cyanide and dynamite--severely damaging the coral. What's worse, mega commercial fishing companies are threatening to ramp up their operations in these precious waters. Friend of the Ocean, your gift today will go twice as far to help us stop this destruction. CORAL is working wit
Earth worm with grainsEarth WormHere's some variety - an animal is featured as the subject of this photo. This earth worm is shown lying on the dirt beside some chicken-feed: various grains including cord and sorghum. We found him under a tarp we had out in the yard, and after the photo he died a noble death - he was fed to the Chooks! The natural structure of this photo draws the eye firstly toward the worm, which occupies the greater portion of the image, and secondly to the grains in the lower-right corner. The picture itself is not designed with a specific composition in mind, the only notable aspects are the main focus-points where the eye rests. It is interesting, though, how the eye follows a rough "zig-zag" course along the curves of the worm, and doesn't follow the smooth line of the worm's body. This photo taken with the Kodak C330 camera.Related Photos:The Modest BlossomClose-up of a hen-pecked chook's feathersOther blogs:

What’s wrong with the Creature From the Black Lagoon is everything that is wrong with science and religion. Love.I can still remember when I first saw this movie. It was a long time ago. Throughout six and seventh grade I spent many Friday nights with my best friends Joshua and Nathaniel. We’d stay up “late” at Josh’s, sitting on his floor watching old movies his father had rented for us. We’d watch the classics: Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man, Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy, Abbott and Costello Battle Racism and Oppression in White Hollywood. And we’d watch the creature features, like The Creature From the Black Lagoon. Remember when you were little, and you were never sure weather something was going to be really scary, or just exciting and funny instead? Watching The Creature From the Black Lagoon is very much like that. When you’re young so many things t

By now, though, I am ready to crash my head straight through my monitor. It
Mammals new to science have been emerging in Southeast Asia of late: three new species of deer found in the forests of Vietnam in the 1990s; a long-whiskered rat representing a previously unknown family of mammals discovered at a hunter's market in Laos and revealed in May; and now a cat-size creature with orange fur and a long, strong tail has been photographed in Indonesia. A camera trap set in the mountains of Kayan Mentarang National Park in Borneo snapped two images of the mysterious creature as it trundled through the rain forest in 2003. "We showed the photos of the animal to locals who know the wildlife of the area, but nobody had ever seen this creature before," says Stephan Wulffraat, a biologist working with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to identify and study the creature. "We also consulted several Bornean wildlife experts--some thought it looked like a lemur--but most were convinced it was a new species of carnivore."
When I was growing up, my Mom had her nighttime rituals - chief among them was her evening bath. I would beg to 'keep her company', lest the poor soul be lonely. It's a wonder she didn't lose her mind with all my constant yakking.I started taking more baths over the past year, mainly as a way to wind down and get some pain relief. (Just so you know, I wasn't grubby before that. I just took the faster shower method.) There are lots of fancy remedies, but I have taken a liking to Batherapy. It is a natural mineral bath agent (not a secret agent, because it says so right on the bottle) and it is relatively cheap. It smells, well, rather earthy, but I have grown fond of it. At the risk of sounding like a bad infomercial, I would highly recommend it when you've tried all your strategies and are still in pain and need a good night's sleep. The stuff works.Technorati tags: arthritis batherapy pain relief

Sometimes when my mom’s group meets we talk about serious things, but last week we talked about what to call the vagina.

So radical, I know.
Yeah, yeah, so technically the “vagina” is just one part of the whole package, but the reality is that most other American girls are going to be

Set during the 1960s in an alternate New Zealand known as Nuovo Zelandia, “Perfect Creature” imagines a world where vampires and humans peacefully co-exist, with the bloodsuckers the next step in human evolution. This delicate balance looks to be destroyed when an influenza epidemic begins to sweep the human population and one vampire turns to preying on humans. The church sends out Silus (Scott) to catch the renegade vampire, Edgar. Silus joins forces with a human police captain (Burrows), and discovers that Edgar harbors dark secrets.

So if you've been around here a while you know about my odd children and their propensity for taping informational signs to objects around our house. Since I've got nothing else to post right now, I thought I'd treat you to another example. This one requires a bit of explanation. I tend to sit for long periods of time at our kitchen table, on a hard wooden chair. Since I don't have a lot of, er, natural padding, I usually put some kind of pillow on the chair. We have a stuffed cheetah that works nicely. Yes, I sit on a stuffed cheetah. Stay with me.Recently it was "pajama day" at my kids' school, which meant... well, hopefully I don't have to explain that part. In addition to wearing their pajamas, the kids were allowed to bring a stuffed animal to school. My 7 year old son chose to take the cheetah pillow. Thoughtfully, he replaced it with another pillow, evidently named "Wampy" (pronounced "wompy"). I can only assume it was named for its wamping properties.I found the following
