Frequently when people come into the shop I am asked if I ever give lessons on how to do some of the things I do. I usually say "no, I would not know how to do that." But that is not quite the whole answer. I routinely buy magazines and books looking for new techniques and ideas for new pieces. Many times this will give me an idea on how to use the medium but it doesn't cover all it can do. So I start exploring myself. Now that my writer bug is on full tilt, it seems other aspects of my need to create are kicking in as well. I think it would be fair to say that all a child needs is a box of crayons and a pad of paper to express their creativity. I must have been about 11 myself when I would spend many a happy hour drawing and colouring. Whilst I'm all for the advancement of technology, there is a growing trend that allows our children's brains to rot in front of a computer screen. Soon we shall have a whole generation of children with zero imaginative powers, trapped in a virtual world devoid of artistry. Sunday night we had the first of this weeks three planned Alcopop! meetings. The night began with a trip to the Purple Turtle in Oxford to check out goFASTER, a brilliant indie pop band from Liverpool. Imagine The Young Knives crossed with The Wombats, but influenced by the likes of Make Believe, Owls, Cap n Jazz etc, and throw in a butt-load of cheeky scouse charm. They played a blinding set then we crushed them at table football, twice, before saying our goodbyes and returning home to tackle the second tack on our agenda: Alcopopular Vol. 2's artwork.Alcopopular Vol. 2, the second in our line of compilations on alternative formats, is a 16 track cassette due out on 1st January 2008, limited to just 98 copies.
