John Derbyshire of National Review wrote this column on Expelled which is highly critical of the creationist/intelligent design movement. For example, he wrote:
When talking about the creationists to people who don’t follow these controversies closely, I have found that the hardest thing to get across is the shifty, low-cunning aspect of the whole modern creationist [...]
I know I usually write about politics and current events, but while grazing across YouTube, I happened to find an excellent video series on Evolution titled: Why Do People Laugh at Creationists? There are 19 total videos, and I provided all of them for you below in a YouTube playlist. The director goes through such detail, it is really a learning experience for those of you who are science...

Yesterday I reported on how P.Z. Myers was expelled from Expelled, a movie promoting creationism, while Richard Dawkins made it in. This story first gained a tremendous amount of coverage in the blogosphere, but now even The New York Times has picked it up. Both Myers and Dawkins appear in the film after having been [...]
A leading scientist accuses creationists of peddling the lie that there is no fossil evidence of evolution. Some Christians claim there is a lack of "missing link" fossils, halfway between two major groups of creatures. They say this proves Charles Darwin's theory of evolution is a fallacy and that God created each living species from nothing. But, in an essay published in the magazine New Scientist today, geologist Donald Prothero claims that reports of "huge gaps" in the fossil records have been greatly exaggerated.Dr Prothero, a professor of geology at Occidental College in Los Angeles, said: "Life does not progress up a hierarchical ladder from 'low' to 'high' but is a branching bush with numerous lineages splitting apart and coexisting simultaneously."For example, apes and humans split f
A few months ago I looked at some statistics for the type of people who visit this site and much to my dismay, (this was a few days before Halloween) over 50 % of the people that visited "Perspective" logged on to the page that showed "Borat's Halloween costume!"The mere thought that most of the people who visited the blog came here for stuff like Borat threw me into an instant and severe depression. Here I was looking for stuff that I thought people would find interesting and instead I learn that well over half of my readers were just looking for the lowest form of humor. On top of it all, it wasn't even that funny a picture and I had serious reservations about putting it on the blog in the first place. The thought that my blog was catering to "idiots" almost made me quit the whole thing and I had to take a few days off to reflect on what I wanted to do.After my brief vacation I decided that from now on I would only write about things that I personally found interesting and if other p
On several occasions recently, when debating with creationists, I have extended a challenge which is yet to be met. I would now like to circulate it as widely as possible, for reasons that I will explain later.
(A quick aside: this challenge, which is creatively [as it were] named after the author, also applies to those who call themselves advocates of Intelligent Design.)
Creationists love to appeal to science to argue their case. Rather than simply saying that they believe that creationism is true and evolution is false, based on faith, they love to claim that the scientific evidence is on their side. They like to create the illusion that the path leading to the Garden of Eden is a rational one. No sooner have they finished quoting some pseudo-scientific babble about the bacterial flagellum, than they are quoting verses straight from Genesis.
When debating with creationists, I often find them citing ‘scientists’ who reject evolution ‘based on the evidence’. We’ll leav
Both Mark Noonan of Blogs for Bush and DaveScot of Uncommon Descent reference the same Bob Carter article as evidence that global warming just ain’t happening.
The salient facts are these. First, the accepted global average temperature statistics used by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change show that no ground-based warming has occurred since 1998. Oddly, this eight-year-long temperature stasis has occurred despite an increase over the same period of 15 parts per million (or 4 per cent) in atmospheric CO2.
High price for load of hot air
It would have been interesting to have a direct link to those “accepted global average temperature statistics used by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change” because, funny, it doesn’t look that way to me. A graph from page 6 of the IPCC’s 2007 Summary for Policymakers (PDF) looks to be in direct contradiction to Carter’s statements. And so does this:
It doesn’t take a lot of thought to recogniz
I wrote a post on this subject a couple of days ago, but the blog Hell's Handmaiden brought a poignant article from Answers in Genesis to my attention, and it inspired me to expand on some of my ideas. The article's author, Answers in Genesis president Ken Ham, laments the fact that most colleges will not accept credits from Christian home schooling or Christian schools: Let's face it. Secular humanists have, by and large, won the culture war in America's public schools. But not just satisfied with victories there, they are now aiming at Christian schools and homeschools. Yes, Christian institutions are becoming more and more marginalized in the US. And, I think you will be shocked at the latest developments. Then he goes on to show his winner takes all mentality: So, the major argument presented against homeschooling in the US and Britain is that most of the parents teach their children the biblical account of creation. The secularists recognize that if the account
A front page article in the New York Times this morning caught my eye. Titled "Believing in Scripture but Playing by Science's Rules", the article is about Dr. Marcus Ross, who's 197-page dissertation was about the distribution of mosasaurs 65 million years ago. "So what?" you might ask. Dr. Ross is a young-earth creationist who believes the Bible is the literal word of God and the world was made 6,000 years ago. This is intellectual dishonesty in the extreme. He basically lied his way through his doctorate to gain a legitimate PhD and obviously didn't care enough about his own work to accept his findings. He was simply pretending. The real clincher is where he works now: Liberty University, the ultra-conservative school founded by Jerry Falwell, which teaches young-earth creationism as actual science. In Ross' defense, the New York Times reports:For him, Dr. Ross said, the methods and theories of paleontology are one "paradigm" for studying the past, and Scripture is anoth
