      Flat-Faced Crawling Fish Discovered
April 3, 2008—After countless centuries, this odd anglerfish (right) may finally be ready for its close-up. Discovered in Indonesia in January, the species has forward-looking eyes like a human and crawls rather than swims. Crawling ‘Glass’ Fish Sighted in Indonesian Waters
A fish that would rather crawl into crevices than swim, and that may be able to see in the same way that humans do, could represent an entirely unknown family of fishes, says a University of Washington fish expert. The fish, sighted in Indonesian waters off Ambon Island, has tan- and peach-colored zebra-striping, and rippling folds of skin that obscure its fins, making it look like a glass sculpture that Dale Chihuly might have dreamed up. But far from being hard and brittle like glass, the bodies of these fist-sized fish are soft and pliable enough to slip and slide into narrow crevices of coral reefs. It’s probably part of the reason that they've typically gone unnoticed – until now.The individuals are undoubtedly anglerfishes, says Ted Pietsch, a UW professor of aquatic and fishery s

SEO Tip Number 6: Blog Pages’ Crawling/Ranking Attributes
Your blog’s page ranking can also be affected by factors that prevent search engine crawlers from indexing your blog pages properly. Factors such as the amount of indexable text, coding, server accessibility, and content duplications; all have the capacity to pull your page rank down if you’re not careful and mindful about it.Indexable ContentAccording to most SEO experts, pages that are “all” images, flash, frames, or java scripts rarely rank well. It is because search engines will find it hard to textually index a particular page if it contains no HTML text to associate the page with. (This is where the “image filename”, “alt”, and “title” attributes of images, --if it’s image-based not flash or java--, comes in handy.) If you have a blog post that happens to fall i

Crawling House Spiders - Keep or Keep Not
I am not a big fan of spiders, especially when they are bigger than one centimeter, but below that size I keep them running and climbing around the house. I just keep them to ensure they eat the smaller bugs in the house, which I am not able to see. It makes me feel better a bit. If anyone has objections keeping this little spider in the house, please let me know now, but I think they don't bite, lol. However, I have to mention when I was much younger, may be seven years old, my parents once wanted me to get over the spider fear and gave me a rolled newspaper and told me to kill this giant then spider. I never did, I just stood there and cried, until my parents realized how stubborn I was. I still fear big spiders, but hey I don't care, I just run away, why harm them, lol. What you see, obv

Thursday Open Diary: Still Crawling Along
No huge news to report today so far, unless you consider all base coaches having to wear helmets as huge news (Get ready to be stylin' and profilin', Sinatro!). So, here's some more speculation/predictions/suggestions. Feel free to add any of your own. First up, as Carl stated earlier in the headlines, the Cubs continue to further look into Japan for players, this one being Hitoki Iwase, who is considered the Rivera/Papelbon of the Far East. Over at ACB, Maddog broke down the stats, and Iwase seems pretty solid, including 96 saves in the past two seasons and a career ERA of 1.72 and 1.03 WHIP. This further puts proof (as unfortunate as it may be) that Dempster will likely become a starter next season. Or, what I hope, is that they're trying to boost his trade value (which has been speculated by many). With Hendry falling in absolute love all of a sudden with Japanese players, you can next expect him to be targeting Isuro Tanaka, formerly of the Tokyo Giants/Cleveland Indians and

Do You Know What’s Crawling In Your Hostel Shower?
There are few things in the world that are universal. You might think showering is one of them. How many variations could there be? The answer - more than you can imagine. Consider the various elements involved: plumbing, setting, temperature, interior design…fauna. I had my first taste of unique plumbing in Ireland. In the hostels where I was staying, the shower heads had no cold or hot taps, just one big knob. If you turned it to the left, you got more water pressure, but the temperature dropped dramatically. If you turned it to the right, you got heat, but the pressure turned into a trickle. In the middle you got nothing. Even at its best, the water didn’t penetrate my first layer of hair. I had two choices: freeze to death, or walk around all day scratching the shampoo out of my scalp. This plumbing challenge, however, paled in comparison to one my friend Terese encountered in Bolivia. The Horror, The Horror “It was like something in a Frankenstein movie,&r

New York is Crawling Mostly With Yankees Fans
The Quinnipiac University polls took a little time to include sports into their normally politically-focused agenda. The completely useless poll revealed -- shockingly -- that New York has more Yankees fans than Mets fans. Oddly enough, most Yankees fans reside in the Bronx while the biggest percentage of Mets backers live in Queens. Wow, I can't believe I am even wasting my time reporting these results. The findings, released this morning: 51 percent of the fans polled said the Yankees were their favorite baseball team, compared with 35 percent for the Mets (and 3 percent for the Boston Red Sox). In a Subway Series, city baseball fans would back the Yankees over the Mets, by a margin of 52 percent to 44 percent. Not surprisingly, support for the Mets in such a hypothetical matchup was strongest among Queens residents (55 percent to 40 percent), and the Yankees found their strongest support in the Bronx (66 percent to 31 percent). What the results don't reveal is that the 3 percent of

When I first heard "Paris is Burning" I instantly took note of the fluctuations of the song and Annie Clark's vocals right on point. Her new album, "Marry Me" dropped at your music store earlier this month.  If you haven't already picked it up, do so now!  It's a little soul, rock and indietronic mished in with clapping, tambourines, trumpets, choirs etc.  St. Vincent, is just one of the products of her incredible talent.  Her multi-instrumentalist skillz stretch into acts such as The Polyphonic Spree (scroll down) and Sufjan Steven's travelling band to name a couple. Earlier this year she toured with Jollie Holland (serious blues).  I can't believe she is only 23!! She's one of those people that make you wonder what you've been doing your whole life. sadness =) Check out these tracks! Now. Dan Crow Of Google Speak About Crawling, Indexing & Ranking
The SEMNE organization landed an incredible opportunity last week with a guest lecture from Dan Crow. I've seen Dan speak once before several years ago and was shocked by his overly secretive conduct. Thankfully, Google, and apparently, Dan, have changed a lot since then. He had some remarkable things to share with the SEMNE group and, thanks to Jill Whalen's post (Getting Into Google), the rest of us as well:  We were also treated to some additional tips that many people may not have known about. For instance, did you know that you could stop Google from showing any snippet of your page in the search engine results by using a “nosnippet” tag? And you can also stop Google from showing a cached version of your page via the “noarchive” tag. Dan doesn’t recommend these for most pages since snippets are extremely helpful to visitors, as is showing the cache. However, Google understands that there are certain circumstances where you may want to tur

If you're crawling case-sensitive URLs in your sea...
If you're crawling case-sensitive URLs in your search catalog, such as an Apache-hosted intranet, you'll run into some strange errors. In your crawl log, you might see "Content for this URL is excluded by the server because a no-index attribute.". This implies that there is a no-index or no-follow metadata tag on the content, although there probably isn't. Further, the log will indicate the URLs as being all lower-case, when they aren't...There is a Microsoft hot fix for this (SharePoint Hotfix, April 12 2007). The KB article is at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932619. Basically you have to call up Microsoft and ask for the download, which they will send you a link for.Once you've installed the hotfix, go to your Shared Service provider(s)'s Search Settings. Reset all the crawled content and do a full crawl on your sources. Subsequently, the SharePoint crawler will pick up and crawl the URLs appropriately.

Nationalist secularists in Turkey are protesting their pro-Islamic government, reports The Times. Hundreds of thousands have assembled, flying Turkish flags and invoking the memory of Ataturk who formed their secular republic. This is a set in a backdrop of instability, with contested elections and a military willing to rein in overly Islamic officials. This is encouraging for secularists and democrats worldwide, as a fully democratic Turkey could become the beacon Iraq failed to be. By rejecting the calls of theocracy Turkey is showing skeptics from both sides of the terror spectrum that Muslim countries can be democratic, and that separation of church and state need not be limited to the West.Yet Turkey is unlike the rest of the Middle East. Its successful democratisation would not neccesarily mean the rest of the Middle East would fall into line.Unlike other states in the region, Turkey has a long history of secularism which its people willingly embrace. Hence, Ataturk is summoned at
