Stomach Cramps - Things to Ponder During Menopause
Menopause is a transition stage in a woman's life when she stops menstruating for over 12 months continuously. When menopause sets in, the ovaries stop production of eggs, resulting in irregular menstrual activity that eventually ceases. Other hormonal changes occur and symptoms like stomach cramps, pain in the leg, irritability, mood swings, hot flashes and decrease in bone density accompany menopause.Menopause usually occurs between the ages of 40 and 55, and is a natural event in every woman's life. It comes with its own string of health issues, be they physical or emotional, and can be a particularly trying time for those who suffer side effects of menopausal symptoms. They are just ways in which our body reacts to the decrease in production of female hormones.Menopause and Stomach

BB Brunes - J'Ecoute Les Cramps
I was talking about Soko with a buddy, and the theme of the general lack of the ability to hear what other countries are listening to on their radio came up a few weeks back. It's a common complaint of mine - in this high-tech world teh US has isolated itself from good music being performed elsewhere. Well, my friend contacted a friend who knew someone in France, and joyfully eartaste has received a box of CDs from France. BB Brunes is an exciting rock group that gets me up to dance without any effort. These guys are simply great. I have no idea what they’re saying, but that’s okay – they rock their socks off in a manner that rocks my socks off. Excellent. Shoutouts for Gang & Blonde Comme Moi. BB Brunes

      Cramps
Cramps Cramps are caused from mineral imbalance and lack of circulation. The problem begins in the intestines. Keep the intestine clean with a high fiber diet (found in whole grains) and you shouldn't have cramps.ShiatsuThe treatment of muscle cramp is to relax the spasm and improve the local circulation. Keeping the limb warm, rubbing and massaging it, and avoiding excessive fatigue are useful in the care of cramps. Diet Miso soup along with seaweed supplies the minerals necessary to relieve and prevent cramps. Veins contain non-return valves which allow blood to flow only toward the heart, while the veins themselves are compressed by the contraction of the muscles with each movement of the limb. In this way, blood is forced to move. When the blood passes a valve, it cannot return; mo

What to do About Lower Leg Cramps
Here is a question I received from a former client. “…I noticed with the increased exercise that I’m getting a lot of lower leg cramps. The cramping is usually in response to any prolonged brisk walking or running. My personal trainer suggested that I might be lacking magnesium, so I’ve been taking magnesium, but I haven’t seen any improvement. Suggestions?” There are many possibilities. Before I even consider nutritional deficiencies, I look first to body mechanics. Often a long-standing or undiagnosed misalignment in the hips/pelvis will cause lower leg cramps. Even a misalignment in your shoulders and upper back can lead to lower leg cramps. A good chiropractic or osteopathic adjustment can work wonders for that. A common cause for these kinds of cramps is improper body mechanics during exercise. Your gait may be off. You may not have the proper kind of walking shoe for your body. Your posture may not be in good alignment and walking may exaggerate th

Fluid Intake, Dehydration, Sports Drinks and Muscle Cramps
It’s December, which means two things: if you live down under in Australia, it’s the heat of summer (especially the more north you go). Elsewhere, it’s also the holiday season, holiday parties, and of course plenty of alcohol. In both cases, dehydration can be a factor. I recall a theory where if you are hung over, drinking a sports drink such as Gatorade would help absorption. But does it really work? Enter Ross Tucker and Jonathan Dugas, stage left. These 2 Ph. D’s from South Africa wrote an extensive 5 part series on the topics of Fluid Intake, Dehydration, Sports Drinks and Muscle Cramps: Part I: The History of Fluid Intake During Exercise Part II: Metabolic Rate, not Dehydration, Predicts Core Temp Part III: The Field vs. the Lab Part IV: Why Thirst is Not Too Late Part V: Muscle Cramps These great articles are definitely worth the time to sit down and read, and you can come to your own conclusions. Happy Holidays, and take life in moderation. Copyright

      Muscle Cramps: Part V
What all this means for youWe have now run the entire gamut in this series on cramps, and it has been quite a ride. This series generated the more reader interest than any of our other posts or series, and let us say again how grateful we are for your participation in the debates and discussion. As academics, we hold fast to the old adage that there is no such thing as a stupid question, and all of us, expert or novice, must ask questions to learn and advance our own knowledge. And this was a complicated series, so we really thought it might be a good time to try to summarize what, exactly, does all of this mean for you the athlete?Who experiences cramps? There does seem to be a predisposition cramps. To date no one has even tried to identify the gene(s) that might predispose one to cramping, but even a general survey of the active population will reveal that some people cramp both at night and during exercise, while others never cramp. So you might indeed be a "cramper" before you

      Muscle Cramps: Part IV
An explanation of the evolution of scienceOver the past week, we've taken what has turned out to be a pretty intense look at muscle cramps. We began with a discussion of how muscle cramps were first attributed to a low serum electrolyte concentration, without any substantial evidence for this theory. We then moved on to show that, in fact, people who cramped have the SAME electrolyte concentrations and levels of dehydration as those who do not cramp - this is pretty strongly suggestive that cramping is not caused by either dehydration or electrolyte depletion. Then on Saturday, we described a new model for muscle cramps, involving a 'malfunction' in the reflex control of muscles during fatigue. This series, more than any other we've written so far, has stimulated some telling comments and incisive questions. And we're very pleased with that - our intention here at the Science of Sport was always to stimualte discussion and debate, and we pride ourselves on the thoughtful and di

      Muscle Cramps: Part III
A Novel theory for Exercise-associated muscle crampsToday sees the third part of our series on muscle cramps. It was going to be the final installment in this particular series, but we've received some excellent and thoughtful questions and comments on the issue, so have decided that we'll do a fourth post, just summarizing some of those key "sticking" points. It seems from the feedback that this issue - electrolytes and cramps - is one of the more contentious ones around. So in our FOURTH post of the series, we'll look back and try to tie up any loose ends and conceptual issues. In Part I and Part II, we have introduced some of the problems in the Electrolyte theory. These problems - gaps in the theory - are what Stephen Hawking referred to as "creaking, ugly edifices". In science, we establish a hypothesis, and when the data do not support that hypothesis, it is time to find an alternative. Clearly, the data on electrolytes do not support the electrolyte or dehydration theor

      Muscle Cramps - Part II
The electrolyte depletion model of muscle crampsIn part one of this new series we tried to set the scene by providing some history in this area of muscle cramps. At times it might seem like we are a bit heavy on the historical side, but as we mentioned in one of our comments to Part I, understanding the historical record is crucial as often it helps us understand why we think what we do---and this affects one's interpretation of the science. In this post we will focus on the prevailing premise that dehydration and electrolyte disturbances cause muscle cramps. The first important thing about this area of research is that Professor Martin Schwellnus is hands down the one researcher who has consistently moved this area forward. As a sports physician he has treated many a runner with cramps, and his curiosity and what he was seeing in the medical tents lead him to challenge this paradigm that dehydration and electrolyte problems cause cramps. What he found was that this model was based

      Muscle Cramps Part I
Theories and Fallacies of muscle crampsAs promised in yesterday's post, today we kick off our latest series - Muscle Cramps. We hope that none of you did cramp in the middle of the night, as we mentioned yesterday! Though if you did, we're sure you stretched your calf and avoided the temptation to point your toe! This is a follow-on from our series on Fluid Intake and Dehydration, and as we were preparing to write this series, we realised that there may actually be even more nonsense and blatant lies in the media than there were for dehydration!Conflicts of interest revisitedIn the dehydration series, we dealt with the very obvious conflict of interests that arise when a company which manufactures and sells sports drinks become the company who are funding and then performing much of the research on fluid and exercise. This is what happened when Gatorade created the Gatorade Sports Science Institute, and began funding research studies all over the USA, that rather unsurprisingly tol

Cramping your Style: How to Prevent Muscle Cramps
By: Tom AmbrozewiczMuscle cramps happen to all athletes at one point in time or another. In fact, muscle cramps happen to most people regardless of athletic training. Muscles cramps are the involuntary tightening of muscles which you usually can control, and the most common problem areas are the legs and abdomen. They can put a real kink in your workout, so practice healthy habits to prevent your muscles from cramping as you train. No one knows exactly what causes your muscles to cramp, but the first thing you can do to prevent it from happening during your workout is warm up your muscles at the beginning of your training session. Use the mat area of your gym to stretch out your muscles and do some light lifting to prepare your muscles for the day's activity. This is a good practice to prevent other injuries as well. When your muscles are warmed up, they will expand and contract better during training, preventing you from cramps. Remember to "warm up" on a larger scale as well-if you a

There are many causes, which bring about cramps, but malfunctioning of thyroid gland may attribute a great concern of this illness. What Is Muscle Cramp? Night Leg Cramps
Photo: terragalleria A very troubling phenomena has begun with nightly leg cramps affecting many women that I know. Apparently these leg cramps are impacting quite a large amount of the population if rumors are true. Why are they happening to women who have never experienced them before? For me they began about a year or so ago. They were so painful that I would have to get out of the bed in the middle of the night and dance around to relieve the cramping. I tried many different remedies, but nothing seemed to work. When I was having a consultation in Dharmasala, India, this past March with the eminent doctor, Doctor Dawa, (who is also the personal physician of His Holiness, the Dalai Lama) I received his wise advice. He asked in which direction I slept, and I told him with my head to the North and my feet to the South. I had read this was the best direction to sleep. Dr. Dawa told me to sleep with my feet facing West. And so when I returned home, I re-arranged our furniture, and w

Menstrual Like Cramps in the Ninth Month
For the past three days I have had menstrual like cramps. These cramps are the worst I have ever had. They disappointed me because I had no contractions afterwards. I refuse to take tylenol at this point because I heard that pain medication can inhibit labor. I am insane I know! I asked around what to do to relieve the cramping and of course the best advice came from my sister-in- law. She suggested I soak in a warm bath. If they go away they are nothing. If it is true labor, the bath will help labor intensify more quickly. I also tried walking, which helped me and of course, a massage. The cramps are gone for now and I feel much better. Going to physical therapy also helped relieve the tension and cramping.
