Almost as soon as my last post on the transnational threat of cigarette smuggling was posted, several alert friends sent me the recent speech by Attorney General Michael Mukasey at CSIS, where he announced a new effort to understand and combat transnational criminal organizations. The initiative is long overdue. As Mukasey noted, the Organized Crime Council had not met for 15 years. Quite a feat, given the numerous and wide-ranging indications that organized criminal groups have steadily gained influence,...(read more)

Yesterday the House side of Congress voted in the College Opportunity and Affordability Act, H.R. 4137. A major feature of the bill clamps down on shady tactics in the student loan industry. The bill sets in place codes of conduct of the "friendships" lenders and university officials currently have. There will be no more kickbacks from sweetheart deals ... just in time for Valentines Day. The bill now goes to the Senate and the White House is already stating they strongly oppose it. I smell a veto coming.
According to Russian newspaper Vzglyad, a number of activists of Russian pro-Putin youth movement "Nashi" were arrested today during an illegal demonstration outside the EU-commission's Moscow office. The demonstration, gathering some 700 people, was arranged in protest against Nashi-activists, partaking in last year's picket against the Estonian embassy in Moscow, being denied visas to the EU-Schengen area.Russian police has obviously learnt from last year's events, and urged the demonstrators to dissolve the meeting, which also was obeyed after some further disorder and some arrests. Nashi had not applied for a demonstration permit for the event. Even though the Russian constitution safeguards the right to assembly, legislation has been approved in recent years demanding official approva

Four title insurers in Washington state face nearly $300,000 in fines after being accused by the state’s Insurance Commission of violating a rule that limits annual spending on gifts and other inducements to $25 per person.
While many of the offenses involved small expenditures, Washington state regulators appear determined to enforce the letter of the law in their third action against title insurers since an investigation conducted in 2005 and 2006 found “widespread, pervasive and routine use of illegal spending to steer business to their companies.”
Last month, Washington state Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler
Crackdown, the game I love to hate. I beat the game within a day, but, that is not what the game was all about. It takes the Grand Theft Auto idea of a sandbox game to a whole new level. Yeah, you can complete missions, but there is races, hidden things to find, tons of free items on the Live Marketplace to add (as soon as you pop the game in for the first time you will literally be bombarded by updates). I never felt that $60 was a good price for this game, but.. for $17.49, this is quite a deal and a half. Looking for a game to mess around with until Halo 3 and the other big name titles are out, couldn’t afford BioShock yet, then pick up Crackdown right now, it is worth the 18 bucks. "Un-Islamic dress" is a big security threat in the land of the mad mullahs:
Tehran's police force dispatched dozens of police cars and minibuses into the early evening rush-hour to enforce the dress rules at major squares in the city centre, an AFP correspondent said.
The new "plan to increase security in society" -- which is limited to Tehran but will later extend nationwide -- comes after a pre-summer drive by the police resulted in thousands of warnings and hundreds of arrests.
"We have vowed to continue the campaign to reinforce the plan to increase security in society with new personnel who have received the necessary training," the Tehran police head of information Mehdi Ahmadi told reporters as the first police forces were dispatched.
"This notably includes the use of 100 female police officers," he added.
He said that the campaign would target women who were badly veiled, wore overly tight overcoats, sported excessively short trousers and were "dressed like models."

China’s export of contaminated vegetable protein resulted in one of the largest pet food recalls in US history (March 2007).
Last tuesday, China’s watchdog AQSIQ (General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine) published their findings. The results so far: 180 plants were closed, 37 firms lost their licence and 11 cases have been forwarded to court. Director Han Yi addressed a press conference and said: “These are not isolated cases”.
Inspectors have uncovered more than 23,000 food safety violations in Chinese plants. Mostly in small plants with less than 10 employees. However, according to China Daily, about 75% of the 1 million food processing plants in China are small and privately owned. Many plants were using industrial chemicals, dyes, recycled or expired food and other illegal ingredients in a range of food products including dog food.

Fears raised that Islamic law will expand under new president
Christians in Nigeria, who make up about half the population, are expressing fears Islamic law already being enforced in northern states will expand nationwide with the inauguration this month of a new “devout Muslim” president, according to a report from the Voice of the Martyrs.
Musa Yar’ Adua was governor of Katsina state in northern Nigeria, where he and nearly a dozen other governors over recent years have imposed Islamic religious law as the law of the government, officials said.
As a result, Christians have lost basic rights such as having a location to meet and meeting there, officials have confirmed.
“We have not been allowed to worship freely, as churches have been denied places of worship. In the Government Reservation Area, for example, it is not possible to get land for places of worship by Christians,” Rev. Canon Williams said in a Voice of the Martyrs report.

Up until this weekend I'd really been hooked on Guitar Hero II. It's one of those games that you really want to play over and over (especially thanks to the Achievement points.) That all stopped when I got Crackdown from GamezNFlix on Saturday.
I'm not going to tell you that Crackdown is totally original. Like many of the GTA clones Crackdown owes a lot to the original. The truth, though, is that Crackdown is a lot more like Ultimate Spiderman than GTA.
One aspect of Crackdown that I really liked was the skill based development. When you start you get 5 stats: Agility, Driving, Marksmanship, Strength, and Explosives. By either collecting orbs (of which there are close to 800 litered across the gameworld) or by practicing your skills you can advance.
With advancement comes stronger abilities. Beef up Agility to jump higher and run faster, Explosives increases the blast radius on your explosives, etc. etc.
Like I said, it's not really original - what it is, though, is FUN. Be

It says something about a game when - in the process of reviewing it - I repeatedly have to look down at the box to remember what its name is. Granted, among the GTA-clones that are out there, Crackdown is one of the most original, and therefore I should have no problem remembering its name. Unfortunately, however, these original moments were sandwiched in-between hours of boring, trigger-fire combat or try-not-to-hit-the-pedestrians driving.
I will confess that I am not one of the biggest fans of GTA, having gotten over the style of driving central to it with GTA 2 (no, youngsters, I’m not talking about Vice City). And frankly, though the GTA series is often lauded for its supposed go-anywhere, do-anything aspects, I generally think - though this has gotten less true as the series has progressed - that the only things you can really do are drive around and shoot people. There are plenty of pretty buildings, but you typically can’t interact with them in any meaningfu

When it comes to the game of CRACKDOWN some of the achievements are pretty easy to get.. however I have gotten stuck on a few and one of them was the "Shot-putter" achievement. Well not any more I found out how to get the achievement. Here is what I did and you can do too... take a body to the middle of the longest bridge on the map and throw it into the water. By doing this the depth of the water counts as feet.
Crackdown is one of the most recent high profile releases for the Xbox 360. Not so much because of the game itself but the fact that buying Crackdown enables gamers to participate in the Halo 3 Beta. Zimbabwe: Police Crackdown on Opposition RalliesWe condemn the actions of the Government of Zimbabwe over this past weekend in suppressing peaceful opposition political activity. In disregard for a court order, riot police in Harare broke up a rally where the leader of one of the factions of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), Morgan Tsvangirai, had planned to announce his candidacy for the country's 2008 presidential election. Scores were injured and arrested for attempting to assemble peacefully and exercise their political rights. The police also suppressed a rally in Zimbabwe's second city, Bulawayo, by the MDC's other faction over the weekend, injuring and arresting many MDC members. We call on the Government of Zimbabwe to respect the country's judicial decisions and the rule of law and allow the people of Zimbabwe to exercise their political rights. Zimbabwe's political and economic crises can only be resolved through dialogue with the political opposition, with Zimbabw
Crackdown has been on the market for about twelve hours now, and already there is a free download for the damn thing. I recently purchased the game known as Crackdown. When I first downloaded the DEMO for the game it seems to be pretty easy to play... well "pretty easy" isn't the name for it... i've had the game for about a week now and I almost have it beat. the missions to kill the gang leaders in the game is waaay to easy and the only thing that i've found to be difficult in the game is finding all thoses mystery orbs and green orbs that cover the tops of buildings. Here are some awesome screen shots of the game... Bridge Explosion, Hanging High, and Car Jacking.
