Many other UN human rights instruments, such as the ICCPR, the [[Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women]] and the [[United Nations Convention Against Torture|Convention Against Torture]] have optional protocols which allow for individuals to make complaints directly to the relevant monitoring body. Currently the ICESCR does not have such a Protocol, but a working group has been established to draft oneref>[ Report of the open-ended working group to consider options regarding the elaboration of an

I've just started reading Fatal Revenant. The more I read of Thomas Covenant the more I see themes beneath the surface. When I first started reading the stories about 25 years ago I read them for the creativity and endured the writing. Now they make me (or should that be 'help me') think about deeper themes than are present in a surface reading.Perhaps it should have been obvious to me right from the beginning, but only now am I really seeing the Land as a body. Revelstone seems to be sort of cross between the head, the brain and the mind - not so clearly distinguished, and probably deliberately so since they are so often conflated in the way we think of ourselves. The wight-warrens and the cave-wights seem to relate to the guts. The Haruchai appear to be the immune system, and their
Covenant Radio will be hosting Rev. Daniel Hyde and Rev. Michael Brown of the United Reformed Church of North America (URCNA) to discuss the book: Called to Serve -- Essays for Elders and Deacons.

This year, for our oldest child, we decided to try the auditing service and curriculum through Covenant Home. We have gone through our first quarter and auditing session and I am well pleased. It was a bit intimidating when we started and the extra time it takes to make sure everything is graded and recorded can become a bit tedious. There are also many positive aspects that I have enjoyed. Each subject you purchase from them comes with a day by day planning guide, so I do not have to make any lesson plans. The auditor is available if I have any questions. They keep all records, issue report cards, maintain transcripts, and provide diplomas. We are doing this only for our highschoolers. It has been a good fit. The auditor simply reviews a portion of the child's work and gives helpful comments, they didn't even make any adjustments to my grading. All in all we are very pleased! They are reformed and classical in methodology. They have complete grade sets but as we experien

The Covenant Network of Presbyterians (the good Presbyterians) had their gathering in Atlanta a couple of weeks ago. Leslie Scanlon of the Presbyterian Outlook has a couple of reports. It appears that they have decided to focus on judicial matters rather than to seek to remove G-6.0106b at this next General Assembly. With the new Authoritative Interpretation passed by the 2006 General Assembly, they are hopeful that some lgbts may become ordained thanks to the clarification of "scrupling" afforded in this recent GA action. The Covenant Network's latest statement of purpose says nothing about legislative activities at the 2008 GA, but is putting its energy into judicial cases. The Covenant Network of Presbyterians offers resources and assistance to individuals, congregations and governing bodies, as the church implements the Authoritative Interpretation and other recommendations of the 217th General Assembly. We pledge our legal, advisory, and educational resources for those
(Conversations with Bob! He likes it! He likes it! Hey Mikey! It's Bob's turn!)At Fuller Seminary Presbyterian Students were expected to take a bunch of Presbyterian courses. They included Presbyterian History, Presbyterian Polity, Presbyterian Program, Presbyterian Ethos, and I think there was one other but I don’t remember what it was. It was 30 years ago. Anyway, Jack Rogers taught Presbyterian Ethos. One day Jack asked what word would most characterize Presbyterian theology. There was this long silence and then Jack started almost jumping up and down shouting, “Covenant! Covenant! If you don’t get anything else out of this class I want you to remember that Presbyterians believe in covenant! So of course, I do. I believe in a God who makes covenants. Most of us tend to think a covenant is something like a contract. One side agrees to do one thing and the other side agrees to do another think. Like getting a contractor to come in and replace your furnace. The contractor
Friends:
I’m so sorry that I’ve let you down this week. Please forgive me. This intensive Bible study training course is taking every extra inch of margin I have, not to mention leaving me weary in mind and body. Thus, I’ve failed to prepare my thoughts for the read along on chapters 3 and 4. If you’d like to share what the Lord is teaching you, I’d love to read it. Again, no limit on your thoughts or comments on the book, Our Covenant God.
My love to you all,
Welcome to Week One of the Everyday Mommy Read-Along of Our Covenant God by Kay Arthur. I’m posting this a bit early as a little reminder. I’m thrilled that you’ve committed to reading through this book for such a time as this. In a world where few things are certain, the unfailing nature of God’s faithfulness and love are a bulwark in the storm.
I’ve asked that we all read two chapters each week and stop by each Wednesday to share with others what we’ve learned. I’d like to open the discussion with a few guidelines and then some questions.
Guidelines
1. Feel free to share at length what you have gleaned in your personal study. No limit on the number of comments or their length.
2. When contributing, please stay on topic. This is a discussion of the book Our Covenant God.
3. We all come from different denominational and systematic influences, but I’d like to save dogmatic doctrinal arguments for another time.
4. This
The problem is that when I read just about any novel it seems like a Buddhist novel, however I think Thomas Covenant is particularly apt.The rather unwilling hero, Thomas Covenant, finds himself thrust into a strange world called The Land. He is convinced that the whole thing is just a dream and is thus unreal. However, no amount of telling himself that the events are unreal allows him to act as though they were unreal. The Land feels real. The people in it are (with very few exceptions) heroically open in the generosity and emotions. Covenant is a tortured soul: in the 'real' world he is a leper, shunned by his neighbours and abandonned by his wife.In one of the most famous Tibetan Buddhist texts, which deals with the experiences during the death process, the dying person is reminded that all the images of gods and daemons are simply creations of the mind. This does not make them unreal, because the person seeing them is affected by them as though they were real. Indeed the c
In 1692, in the Ipswich Colony of Massachusetts, five families with untold power formed a covenant of silence. One family, lusting for more, was banished, their bloodline disappearing without a trace. Until now.Four young students at an elite private school who are descendants of the original families who settled in Ipswich Colony in the 1600s, are bound by their sacred ancestry and special powers. When the body of a dead student is discovered after a party, secrets begin to unravel that threaten to break the covenant of silence that has protected their families for hundreds of years.Watch Movie Here[part 1] [part 2] [part 3]
Part 2When "Northern Lights" was first released, I began hearing its name with negative connotations almost right away. Everything from a "mediocre album with filler tracks" to "they need to return to their old form" seemed to echo through many a person's sentimentality, making me stop and question if I should actually break down and buy the album. Added to this were doubts I had because I'd glanced a tiny portion of the "Bullet" video from a source that did it no justice (I should have gone to Metropolis), making me wonder what this offering entailed. Still, having listened to them through the veritable seasons of change they had undergone going from the sounds of "Dreams of a Cyrotank," "Sequencer," and the wonders of "Europa," to the more mainstreamed "United States of Mind," I really didn't mind them changing directions once more. Everytime they had done so previously, the EBM pulses that drove the much were still very much active, the lyrical content of the albums and the voice
There most mature, openminded and bestproduced album. Showcasing some elements from all their previous albums. But not without adding new elements ranging from euro to r´n´b.A very very good album. This act is surely one of the finest to grace the scene.
In a world where the humdrum sounds of voices without messages and music without meaning seems to mesh hand in hand with the tastes of the listening population, there are other things, diamonds buried beneath a fragile Earth, that many people either don't hear or simply fail to recognize. I'm not certain why that is or why messages with meaning find themselves slighted in this age of pop glamorization and industry fads, but one thing is for certain. We, the listeners, are forced to peer and prod at the scene more and more, scoping out the icons that birth nations of thoughts within their outstretched hands. In their early releases, Covenant can be found as one such band, giving many things that are unique to audiences trained to feast on the simplistic diets that other EBM acts have tried to force into people's minds. Its within their lyrical workings, their beats that seem to flow, and the way that their music meshes together that makes it such an impactual force, and something I f

A long time ago, possibly about 25 years ago, I read Stephen Donaldson's Thomas Covenant books with an enthusiasm that bordered on the addictive. Even then I found some of his prose far too lurid, with an apparent need to trawl through every page of the dictionary in an attempt to outdo the descriptions given in a previous chapter, the imagery and imagination cured all ills.I was disappointed when he wrote the Second Chronicles. He had tidied all his characters away in a neat fashion at the end of the first trilogy, and then was forced to reinvent them for a second trilogy. Nonetheless I read all the second trilogy.Since then I have been in limbo, neither getting rid of the books nor re-reading them ... until now. I've started them from the beginning. The prose is still purple, some of the similes fail in mid-sentence, but the nightmare psychology of the plot is just as gripping (as far as I have got).I wonder whether I will get sucked in again, or will give up wading through hi
