Country music is not as wholesome as mom and apple pie, according to a new study. Country music is worse for kids than rock music…if you judge by number of alcohol and drug references in songs. Researchers studied the bestselling songs in several genres from 2005 found that 37 percent of top country songs featured references to drugs or alcohol, compared to only 14 percent of rock songs. Rap won the bad rap for the all-time worse statistics with a 77% of songs referencing drugs and alcohol. Singers referred to alcohol and marijuana the most with positive sexual, social and emotional consequences. Yet the physical and legal consequences were negative. And what about country music and the findings that it often refers to alcohol instead of drugs? “I’m not saying that’s great, but we don’t know if it really makes a difference,” study author Dr. Brian Primack said. “Maybe kids listen to songs with alcohol, and it doesn’t affect them one way or an

These are numbers on music sales by Nielsen SoundScan. It has been a tough summer for country music album sales. In the first half of this year, total country album sales were down 30%. It was the first time since May 2003 that total country album sales dipped below 400,000. Here are some other stats about country music lately: Album sales dropped for a seventh consecutive year, however digital sales are up dramatically - 65% over 2005’s numbers. Rascal Flatts’  “Me and My Gang” (Lyric Street) was the top-selling album by a single artist at 3.5 million. The country trio also registered the year’s biggest sales week, moving 722,000 copies of “My Gang” in the first week of its release. Pretty impressive.
