I was on a radio show this morning with two other industry experts. The headlines aren't so hot right now and the conversation pretty quickly turned to bankruptcy, foreclosure, horrible credit card rates, predatory lenders, debt and the general idea that the financial services industry really wants to see consumers fail. It was pretty depressing.

Red Sox fans are very lucky–not every team has a pitcher who, when he steps on the mound, makes you feel there is no way he could lose…The Sox had that in Pedro Martinez, and in Curt Schilling. And once again, the Sox have that elusive TRUE ace–in Josh Beckett. Every time he pitches, I [...]
As the awareness for staying healthy and fit increases day by day, more and more people are looking towards ways to achieve healthy weight loss, and the most important step in doing so is to count your calories and create a deficit or increase to achieve your target healthy weight. No matter how much time you spend at the gym, if you consume more calories than you burn, you'll never lose weight. But as daunting as it may sound, there's a formula to measure how many calories you should eat based on your BMR(Basic Metabolic Rate), and its advisable to choose a good diet and fitness plan based on this figure so that your weight-loss plan is more meaningful and successful. (img credit)What is BMR(Basic Metabolic Rate) and how to Calculate it?BMR is the amount of energy your body needs to funct

Now that the Chargers have established the roster they will bring into August, it’s time to take a look at which players will actually make it out of training camp. Team expert Michael Lombardo lays out a projected depth chart, which is without one of the team’s draft picks and one current defender who started 16 games last season.
"The Roots" are slated to perform this friday at Radio City Music Hall with guest Erykah Badu. This iconic group which recently released their 10th album called "Rising Down" last tuesday are disgusted with the current state of Hip-hop. Drummer Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson is quoted as saying " Hip-hop is like a 34 year old single woman with two children right now". Basically what he is saying is that their is no excitement and there is really noone talking about serious political issues at this time. The Roots are very talented and are politically conscience. I give them lots of praise for being a positive driving force for all these years. Ten albums deep and still going strong. Anyway migente i'm out. 40Master E.G Radio, ExtravaGangsta Radio,
RABBI ARTHUR SEGAL: TALMUD YERUSHALMI BIKKURIM: AGING WITH GOD: COUNTING THE OMER During the season of counting the Omer, the 7 weeks between the end of the first full day of Passover and Shavuot, the sages teach us that we are to take stock of ourselves spiritually. The Talmud Yerushalmi Tractate Bikkurim 2:1 tells us that if one is condemned to Divine excommunication because of various types of sins, he will die at fifty years of age. But what is someone lives beyond 50? The Talmud Yerushalmi gives the following explanation:''As to death at the age of 52, that is the age at which the prophet Samueldied. He who dies at 60 dies in the way the Torah refers to death.Death at the age of 70 is death as an act of lov

The counting of votes in the London mayoral election has started. The Conservatives are hoping Boris Johnson can crown their May Day local election victories by unseating mayor Ken Livingstone at City Hall. But Labour will be looking to Mr Livingstone to salvage something from a night that saw them slump to third place in the national vote share. The election will also decide the 25 members of the London Assembly, which scrutinises the work of the mayor. The counting began at 0830 BST and is expected to take up to 12 hours. The process is taking place at three venues - Alexandra Palace, Excel and Olympia - and the new mayor will be declared at City Hall on Friday evening.Neck-and-neckOpinion polls had placed Mr Livingstone and Mr Johnson neck-and-neck, with Lib Dem ex-police commander Brian Pad

An Apiary in ShropshireI had the chance a few days ago to visit one of Shropshire's Bee Keepers, Stuart had very kindly agreed to show me around his Apiary. He has 6 hives in total in an orchard in his back garden. Their is plenty of blossom for the bees to feed on in his garden, but if the bees fancy going a bit further he backs onto a wood. Stuart has been keeping bees for around 6 years and has amassed quite a lot of information in that time. 5 of his hives are of the most common type, known as National Hives and he has one traditional type of hive , known as a WBC Hive . The national hive may not be the quintessential type of hive , but it is the most piratical type as it is easy to move around. Here you can see the bees entering and leaving the hive. It was interesting to watch his as

I had an epiphany this morning as I was scrubbing the toilet at the studio...(how many of you can say you had an epiphany when cleaning the toilet?)It was two years ago today that I left at&t to open my music studio and I haven't worked a day since !!!In no way does it feel like it has been two years. When you love what you do, you don't work any more, you enjoy each day for what it brings! So, with this thought in mind, I wanted to post something about following your dreams that will hopefully inspire some of you to do just that.I had started thinking about opening a teaching studio back in 2004-2005. At that time, it was nothing more than a day dream to which I dared not speak of it out loud. If you knew my wife, you w
“It feels like love, I better get a little of it in me.” How come you’re listening to Sunday on Monday. I knew you were going to ask that, just as you know I was going to say – it’s a wake-up song. Besides, he says, “I don’t believe in Sundays, I don’t believe in anything at all.” Too bad for him. I believe he got me outta bed feeling happy, which is all I need to believe. Bright, energetic, and mind-juices flowing into a dreamy meal of crunchy granola. Up-beat & smiling despite the lyric. I have no idea what the point of the song is, but that doesn’t matter. “Try to remember what you might forget.” Counting Crows

Atkins supporters would say that you don't need to worry about the calories you eat — as long as they don't come from carbs. Dietitians and other weight-loss experts know the truth: calories in equal calories out. In other words, if you eat more calories than your body uses, they will be stored as fat. It's true that different energy sources have varying amounts of calories. Here's the breakdown: 1 gram of carbohydrates equals four calories 1 gram of protein equals four calories 1 gram of fat equals nine calories 1 gram of alcohol equals seven calories Though carbs and protein are only half as caloric as fat, you can't eat them with wild abandon. The best plan is to eat a healthy mix of all three energy sources. Approximately 45-60 percent of calories should come from carbohydrates, 15-2
Today was the first day back from this awful head cold, last night I was able to sneak out to the track for a modified version workout with the OC track club. I was able to soak in some good race stories from a fellow runner named Robert J. Baird. He had a wealth of information on Leona and other Ultra Races in California. Robert was able to ease alot of nerves concerning this daunting task. I am looking forward running some portion of the race with him on Saturday.Today I was able to make it to a 6am spin class, my first in months, I was surprised the instructor still noticed me. It was a good class and I was able to maintain my old cadence of 95 :) After spin, I completed a 45min of resistant training...I was pretty much pooped by 8:30am. Tmr is the real test, I plan on running a very ea
I have been battling a head cold for almost 1 week now, I have been forced to rest a blessing to say the least considering how hot it was this past weekend. With local temperatures going into the low 90's I was on active bed rest :) I am now just dealing with the hangover effects of having several shots NyQuil. I plan to test my legs 1 last time before my first 50mile race (Leona Divide) this weekend. My training started back in Mid December, and I have been pretty consistent with my weekly miles averaging about 40-60 per week. I have managed to develop some close personal relationships along the way. It is amazing the range of topics that a person can talk about during a 8hr training run... In preparation for this weekend I have already started to fill my 3 drop bags with my goodies. What

Four Airlines in the past 2 weeks have announced they are going tits up and shutting down their operations. Aloha Airlines, Skybus and ATA Airlines have all shut down operations in the last two weeks. Champion Air will cease operations on May 31st, 2008. Aloha had 3500 employees and started operations in 1946. Skybus was a low cost airline based in Columbus Ohio which flew to 15 cities with 450 employees. ATA was based in Indianapolis and had been flying for 35 years, employing 2230 people. Champion Air was based in Minnesota and had 550 employees flying 14 old 727's. With oil over $100 a barrel none of these or any other airline had budgeted for these kind of prices. Most of the American public hasn't either. It was 40 years ago today that Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated on the balcony of a Memphis, Tennessee motel. Like so many others---known or unknown---King worked tirelessly for the rights of others, and he was one more who fell unnecessarily to the unforgiving hand of violence.Race still matters in this country, and it touches every person on Earth, and although King's dream is still not fully realized, we all carry the collective responsibility to see it through. From astronomical rates of incarceration for young men of color to predatory lending targeted at communities of color, there is indeed still a long way to go.In memory of Dr. King, may we all still stand for justice.

Clinton has made her plan for universal health care a centerpiece of her agenda. However, among the debts reported this month by Hillary Clinton’s struggling presidential campaign, the $292,000 in unpaid health insurance premiums for her campaign staff stands out. Her aides claim it's not unusual for a campaign to fall behind on some bills, yet Politico found out $213,000 of the bill is from LAST YEAR. Hillary hasn't been paying the bills for her staff's health insurance for several months, at the least. Let's see. She can't manage money, and she's a liar who has been busted making stories up out of thin air. She saved Northern Ireland and Bosnia, built a damn in Norway, destroyed a meteor with her x-ray vision. Blah, blah, blah.read more | digg story

"You Can't Count On Me" è il titolo del primo singolo estratto dal nuovo album ("Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings") della rock band californiana Counting Crows. Tutti ottimi ingredienti.

We went to this interesting movie at a local cyber cafe last night. They showed "Who's Counting? Marilyn Waring on Sex, Lies and Global Economics" which was directed by Terre Nash in 1995.
Film Synopsis:
A modest sheep-farmer by trade, Marilyn waring was New Zealand's first female Member of Parliament in the 70s. With irony and intelligence Marilyn Waring demystifies the language of economics by defining it as a value system in which all goods and activities are related only to their monetary value and monetary exchange with the result that unpaid work, usually done by women, is unrecognized and activities that may be environmentally and socially hazardous are regarded as productive. She maps out an alternative economic vision based on the idea of time as the one thing w

I don’t think I knew how addicted I was until I quit (and I’m using the word “quit” loosely—you know, the whole “counting chickens” thing).Last weekend I ran out of Diet Coke, and because I refuse to break the Sabbath to purchase my caffeine juice, I went to bed with a migraine starter. Two hours and one bucket o’vomit later I was sound asleep, on the tail-end of a prayer vowing never to drink again (you know, Diet Coke). But that wouldn’t be my last fit of withdrawals. Wednesday morning, a whole 4 days sober, I woke up with yet another head-splitting migraine. I realized that if I was THAT addicted that two detox migraines were necessary, it was time to leave the Diet Coke behind. For good. (loosely speaking, of course)And this morning my body demonstrated just how close
One of my favorite bands, Counting Crows, is set to release their new album, "Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings" on March 28, 2008. This is the band's first studio album since "Hard Candy" was released back in 2002. It has been about six years in between albums, but the Counting Crows still have a strong following that all began back when they first released "Mr. Jones" in 1993. Adam Duritz had this to say about the new album, "Saturday night is when you sin and Sunday is when you regret. Sinning is often done very loudly, angrily, bitterly, violently." The album is split up in to two halfs, the Saturday night half and the Sunday morning half. The Counting Crows are allowing fans to get a little preview of the new album. They recently released two of their new songs, "1492" and "When I Drea
Sixty Days and Counting is the final book in the "Science in the Capital" science fiction series. It is a series that deals with a liberal view of the environment and global climate change. To summarize the previous two books (Forty Signs of Rain and Fifty Degrees Below), Frank Vanderwal is scientist at the National Science Foundation, on loan from the University of California at San Diego, who is a quiet but unique character that is similar to many other characters that the author, Kim Stanley Robinson, creates in other books. His characters are usually into hiking, Buddhism, environmentalism, and liberal values. I attended Peanut's preschool party and helped him build his "gingerbread house."I handled the construction parts and he took care of the decorating. I think we make a good team and should probably consider opening up a Mom/Son fake gingerbread house construction business. OK, I did do the pretzel walkway and the spiral of licorice around the tree, but he really had some definite opinions on the placement of gumdrops and candy canes.I enjoyed the sight of all the kids doing the "Reindeer Hokey Pokey," but have to admit to thinking that my little Pean

Whoa! Go easy on Rudolph there, George-ous!With their chunky knits and chunkier hair George-ous Michael and Andrew Ridgely were on course to top the UK charts in December 1984 as the cherry on the cake to their fab year. And then along came Band Aid. Last Christmas was kept off number 1 and has never bothered the top since. But bloody hell, it's never stopped selling. There's a lot of kerchinging every day when it's played a million times and downloaded like buggery around the world. And the universal obsession doesn't stop there. This brilliant site, called, funnily enough, last-christmas.com has painstakingly and lovingly put together as many cover versions of Wham!'s festive favourite. Think of a genre and it's covered. They've even started a list of artists who HAVEN'T done it.Come Boxing Day, I start listening to the original b-side Everything Thing She Wants.***********************************************************Today's Christmas song comes courtesy of last-christmas.
Measuring carbon footprints is an activity renowned for its double-counting pitfalls. Dieter Helm's recent report (pdf) into Britain's "consumption' emissions falls into one.
The World Resource Institute's GHG Protocol, the benchmark methodology for calculating corporate emissions, divides footprints into three scopes: 1) direct (for example emissions from a company's vehicle fleet or factories), 2) indirect emissions associated with energy purchased from third parties and 3) all other emissions, such as emissions in the supply chain or from how customers use products.
Installations in the EU ETS only have regulatory exposure to their direct (scope 1) emissions, because any indirect emissions in the other two scopes are direct emissions for another party. Including them would be double counting.
The higher emissions identified in the study are, in effect, Britain's scope 3 emissions. The British government does not directly control them. Some companies measure their scop

I had an ultrasound on Friday morning, and the baby is looking chubby, healthy and altogether lovely.
It was the first chance this pregnancy that Beloved has had to come to an ultrasound with me. (You think we’re getting a little bit jaded about this whole pregnancy thing? I would have been scandalized had he missed one of Tristan’s ultrasounds!)
The Player to be Named Later - we really do have to get on with that naming thing - is looking, according to the locquacious ultraound technician, “lovely” and “gorgeous” and “perfect” and even “helpful” in turning just the right way so she could get her measurements.
Since she was in there poking around anyway, I asked her if she could confirm the gender for me. It’s not like I didn’t see it myself the last time, but I just couldn’t quite shake off those “girly” type thoughts. Sure enough, magnified on the screen that couldn’t be more obvious,

Gentle reader,
I wanted to share my husband’s thanksgiving thoughts with you:
The following was read on my on my podcast:
Yesterday at work, I began to think about my blessings and realized how much I truly have to be thankful for. So let’s begin.
I’m thankful for a God who gives Grace to me as I seek to follow him day by day. Many times I fail, but he lifts me up. He is gracious and forgiving. He feeds me through His Word and grants me inspiration. He is the giver of all good things and the one to whom thanks ought to be given.
I’m thankful for health. Other than needing more Omega 3’s in my diet and sleep apnea, I’m a fairly healthy guy with no major discomfort.
I’m thankful for my wife. She’s incredibly patient, understanding, and forgiving. She helps me in so many ways. She edits my blog and is there for every podcast. We have our moments like anybody else, but I wouldn’t trade her for anyone in the World.
I’m incredibly b

And hey, by the way, I’m thankful for you-those who blog, who read my blog… I have enjoyed reading so many encouraging, inspiring messages from people like you–in comments you leave, emails you send, and blogs you post. God Bless you all!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

Word has it that the New York City Health Commissioner wants restaurants such as Burger King and McDonald’s to spell out exactly how fattening their food is, right where people order. I personally like that idea myself. Hopefully it’ll keep me eating healthy when I have to grab and run. However, people are [...]

Hahn Estates is located inland from Monterey on a hillside looking down to the Salinas Valley. It's beautiful country that produces some very nice wines. We found ourselves at the winery late in the day recently and enjoyed the great view with a few of their wines.Hahn Estates 2005 Pinot Noir: This Central Coast winery believes so strongly in its pinot noir that it has ripped out 400 acres of cabernet sauvignon to expand its pinot plantings. This is a lush pinot noir with nice deep cherry notes. A great value for a California red.Hahn Estates 2005 Chardonnay: A hint of peach in the nose, with a nice citrus and apricot flavor profile.Smith & Hook 2005 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon: Named for the ranches that make up the vineyard, this red has good tannins and dark purple fruit flavors.
My Dad turns 60 today. Which means he has seen 720 moons. Full moons that is. And Roughly. This figure has not been corrected for leap years, cloudy nights or the evenings when my Dad simply did not want to go see the moon. But you get my idea. Anyhoo. In my family, we always say that my Dad arrived from another planet. There is no doubt about that. Some, actually many, say he came from the Planet of Saints or the Planet of Highly Ethical and Moral Beings (this planet is very sparsely populated) or the Federation of the Extremely Patient Souls (I think he was the sole occupant of that one). Are you shaking your heads and are saying, Naah? These planets don’t really exist? Well, they must. Which other person, in his boyhood would brink back veggies for dinner on the way home from school with the few paisa his mother gave him for a treat in the school canteen? Or never break a teacup or volunteer to put his baby brother down for a nap or pacify the said younger brother when he demanded
After a long couple of days, I'm finally back home. And while it will be good to sleep in my own glorious bed -- I'm hoping that it's sometime in the next few minutes -- there are some things about hotels that are really nice. Like the maid service. And the room service. One of the underratedly great things about staying in a hotel is that there's always a pen and paper handy. It's a lovely little retro convenience in today's digital age. Even the hotels that are nothing spectacular still leave a small pad of paper by the phone. This, of course, comes in handy for many reasons. Anyway, last night, despite my attempt at getting to sleep early so that I was bright eyed and bushy tailed for the long day of work plus return flight home, I was awakened on several occasions by a group of conventioneers having some kind of contest to see who can be the loudest, most annoying drunk, out in the common areas. The last disturbance was at about 2 in the morning (3 Eastern), and I foun
