I was going through a shoe box of old photos today (note, that I said "shoe box" and not "scrapbook"), and I stumbled upon some interesting photos of my youngest son (aka: "the baby"). Mind you, he is a freshman in high school now. When I saw the pictures, I was instantly reminded of something I had written in my Your Boy book regarding the way I used to dress my oldest son. What's the difference between counseling and therapy? The short answer: none.For several years I've advertised myself as a "counselor" rather than a "therapist", but this wasn't always the case. When I first started in private practice in 1991 I was proud to call myself a "psychotherapist", and I used that word on my business cards, letterhead and website. Finally, in the late '90s I began to have second thoughts about that long, imposing-sounding word when one of my clients gave my name to a friend who checked out my website. My client told me his friend's reaction was "I don't need a psychotherapist, I just want someone to talk to."That's fundamentally what I am, but "Bill Herring: Someone to Talk To" just doesn't sound very professional. In my early years I used the title "psychotherapist" for the same reason I wore suits and grew a mustache: it helped prop up my confidence and hide my own essential insecurities.
