Federal agents raided the Office of Special Counsel, a government agency involved in several high-profile and politically sensitive investigations. The agents seized computer files and documents from its chief, Scott Bloch, and his staff. Mr. Bloch, who was appointed by President Bush, has been under investigation since 2005 by the Office of Personnel Management for employee claims that he abused his agency's authority, retaliated against its staff and dismissed whistleblower cases without adequate examination. Mr. Bloch couldn't be reached to comment. The Justice Department joined the case as the inquiry was widened last year to include possible obstruction of justice, which is a criminal offense. The Wall Street Journal reported Nov. 28 that in the midst of the inquiry Mr. Bloc

ACLU Calls for Independent Counsel to Investigate Bush
Posted on April 13, 2008
Wouldn’t it be a beautiful headline if it were the other way around? The ACLU are jumping up and down over Bush saying he knew about harsh interrogation methods for terrorists and approved of them. Of course [...]
From: Bush Admits To Knowledge of Torture Authorization by Top Advisers In a stunning admission to ABC news Friday night, President Bush declared that he knew his top national security advisers discussed and approved specific details of the CIA’s use of torture. Bush reportedly told ABC, “I’m aware our national security team met on this issue. And I approved.” Bush also defended the use of waterboarding. Recent reports indicate that high-level advisers including Dick Cheney, Condoleeza Rice, Donald Rumsfeld, Colin Powell and George Tenet were part of the National Security Council’s “Principals Committee” that met regularly and approved the CIA’s use of “combined” “enhanced” interrogation techniques, even pushing the limits of the now infamous 2002 Justice
Elizabeth Prentiss wrote this letter to encourage a friend over a century ago. May it be an encouragement to you today!Excerpted from The Life and Letters of Elizabeth Prentiss To a young Friend, New York, Jan. 8, 1873.I feel very sorry for you that you are under temptation. I have been led, for some time, to pray specially for the tempted, for I have learned to pity them as greater sufferers than those afflicted in any other way. For, in proportion to our love to Christ, will be the agony of terror lest we should sin and fall, and so grieve and weary Him. "One sinful wish could make a hell of heaven"; strong language, but not too strong, to my mind. I can only say, suffer, but do not yield. Sometimes I think that silent, submissive patience is better than struggle. It is sweet to be in th

Clearly I need a little comedy today..lol. Apparently Bishop Don “magic” Magic has just what Britney Spears needs.“Britney all I need is 33 minutes of your time to sit down, to talk and to find out what it is that you’re missing in your life to fulfill your dreams because dreams do come true. I’ve been there. I’ve done that. I understand what you are going through Britney and you don’t have to go through it like that. One day at a time. That’s all God asks for. One day at a time. Don’t worry about the day before or the day after.”Thanks to Bossip for the story.

FTC Chairwoman Debora Platt Majoras will resign from the FTC and will join Procter & Gamble as Vice-President General Counsel, its number two attorney. P&G's current general counsel, James Johnson, earlier this month announced his plans to retire in June. The company named deputy general counsel Steven Jemison, 56, as his successor. There is speculation that Majoras, who is over ten years younger, will be in line to succeed Jemison when he retires. Majoras will primarily be responsible for the company's global antitrust and litigation departments. P&G is the top-spending advertiser in the country, according to Nielsen, and is involved in a number of big cases. For example, P&G's $57 billion acquisition of Gillette was allowed by the FTC in 2005, though the FTC required P&a

In a recent article in Law.com, Todd King describes his transition from private practice to in-house counsel.Following a two-year clerkship, Mr. King worked for six years at Jones, Day in Atlanta. The opposing party in one of his cases was The Schwan Food Co. After getting to know Mr. King through his representation of their adversary, Schwan hired King as an in-house division counsel. Mr. King experienced two challenges in transitioning to in-house work: (1) being exposed to a number of different issues involving different areas within Schwan – such as marketing, sales, and logistics; and (2) balancing the need to add value to his in-house clients (thereby earning their trust) while maintaining the discipline to push back on ideas or initiatives that involve undue legal risk.I faced cha

Well, it seems as though the voices of numerous people who voiced concerns about Street View and privacy have grown loud enough to prompt a more formal response by Peter Fleischer, Global Privacy Counsel for Google (via Google LatLong blog). Although Google had previously commented on the matter here, there must have been enough discussion internally at Google to prompt a response from one of its legal folks.
Since the release of Street View, a debate has emerged with regard to whether Street View is too intrusive. From citizens concerned about their cats being captured on camera to Canadians potentially blocking Street View.
It will be interesting to see how this pans out, and what Google’s recourse will be in other countries where the line between ‘public’ and ‘private’ may not be as gray as it is in the U.S.

Does anybody know where to go for legal counsel regarding unfair credit reporting in NJ? I have been fighting BOA since 2005. I have all the documents sent to them so they can correct the adverse account entry on my credit report and they still give me the run-around. I tried writing to the credit bureaus too but all they told me was to write to BOA. I am tired of this game they are playing maybe it's time I sue them? The Answer : If you have well documented proof that:-you did pay the bill-you did notify them of the error-you did dispute this with the credit bureau...then by all means sue them. There is a very specific procedure you need to follow, but if you do it you have a very easy small claims lawsuit, and you will win $1000 for your trouble (plus legal fees). If you don't want to fight this yourself...look in the phone book for a lawyer that specializes in collections. Sure, they work for collection agencies, but these slimeballs will also eat their young, and will take your ca
The state university system's general counsel tried to put to rest concerns that one of FAMU's newly appointed trustees might have business interests that pose a conflict of interest.
Speaking Thursday to the Board of Governors task force working to fix financial problems at FAMU, general counsel Vikki Shirley said that FAMU trustee Robert Brown, founder of a PR firm in North Carolina, no longer has contracts with the FAMU Foundation and Alumni Affairs office.
Brown's previous contracts prompted National Alumni president Alvin Bryant to protest his selection, but Shirley and Ammons said Brown is not in violation of any conflict of interest policies.
In fact, FAMU trustee Bill Jennings told the task force that Brown had one outstanding invoice worth $32,000 for consulting work done before his recent appointment. But Brown has decided to donate that money to FAMU.

President Bush is expected to announce Fred Fielding to the post of White House Counsel that was vacated by the resignation of Harriet Miers last week.
Fielding worked in the, what else, Reagan and Nixon administrations, as outlined in his bio at the Wiley, Rein & Fielding LLP website, where he is a senior partner. He is no stranger to the current Bush administration as he was named to the the 9/11 Commission in 2002. He was John Dean’s deputy in the Nixon administration during Watergate.
So this is just the guy Bush needs when the Democrats start airing out dirty laundry.
Cenk Uygur put it best yesterday: “Too Weak to Fight the Democrats, But Strong Enough for the Supreme Court.”
Well... if you look at the actual numbers, most of that 5% jump can be attributed to an inexplicable 12% surge in Liberal support in the province of Ontario. And only 1% of that was at the expense of the Conservatives. It's interesting how they don't even attempt to explain why Ontario suddenly regards Stephane Dion as some sort of hero whereas the rest of the country doesn't really care. Here's a good example of media spin:The Strategic Counsel poll for CTV and The Globe and Mail found that 55 per cent of Canadians consider Dion to be a good choice for leader.Nineteen per cent felt the Quebec MP and cabinet veteran was a poor choice, while 27 per cent had no opinion.Approval numbers for the Harper government remain in the black: 56 per cent approve of the job his government is doing, while 38 per cent disapprove.Interesting. You can make your own judgement call on that. All we can do right now is to make sure the Liberals fool themselves into overestimating Dion.

The G8 economic ministers met this weekend in Tokyo to talk about the price of oil. Normally this meeting of the wealthiest nations ends with a call for the little fish of the world to do their part and pump more oil in support of the cheap oil-powered big boys. According to Reuters, they've changed their tune. There's "a growing acceptance that consumer nations must find ways to temp
