Instead of using Alopathy medicines, you can try this at home.Take 2 leaves of Tymol seeds and 2 leaves of holy basil and boil them in little water for couple of minutes. The water level reduces after few minutes. Remove the leaves and add half tea spoon of honey to the mix. Stir well and feed it to infants. This gives instantaneous relief where the baby throws up phlegm by vomiting. You can do the same for 3 to 4 times in a day. I have tried it and it has worked well for my baby.

      too sick to blog. (cough)
I haven't been blogging lately because a) I've been sick as a dog and b) work has suddenly got frantic after 18 months of dead air, meaning I can't afford to take time off.It appears that I have The Never Ending Cold that is going around. The usual remedies (sleep, NeoCitran, sleep, hot orange juice with honey and ginger, sleep) aren't working. Nothing kills this bug.I had a voice-over gig this month, but fortunately my throat cooperated that day. In fact, the germs might have helped. Usually when I'm nervous my voice raises in pitch, and I have to work hard in front of the mic to relax. This time, my sickly huskiness lowered the pitch to a relaxed tone in spite of my nerves.I'm really putting the *ahem* into Ahem Productions lately.

{summary}The Rosco is doing much better.  He’s his usual chatterbox self.  Thank goodness for injectable penicillin. The Snarky Momma?  Not so much.  I’ve spent the past two days with clicking ear drums, alternating hot/cold flashes, a stopped-up head, body pains, stomach upset, mild nausea and headache.  If I hadn’t had a flu shot I’d swear that’s what it was.  More likely I have whatever virus Rosco has in the “Ha ha, you have to go to work tomorrow” adult form.

Herbal Tea for Cough and Cold
The cold and cough season has affected our house severely. Mostly on account of the cretins on my commute that use the subway as their own personal Petri dish. The cough has been especially rough on Scanlynn. I on the other hand have been bred on the fine air in Pune city with an S.P.M. count of over 150. As we entered the 4th day of our seasonal suffering, I remembered a concoction my ayurvedic doctor would prescribe. I would take most of what my vaidya prescribed with a pinch of salt. Not to mention the fact that some of his prescriptions actually required a pinch of salt. But I remembered that he had given me a recipe for a cough tea that could be taken if you were looking for a non-chemical alternative to calming the tickles in your throat. It was a good change from regular tea, and it did the job. And as a bonus it is herbal and all natural.Ingredients4 cups water3 tsp grated ginger1 stick cinnamon10 cloves of cardamom3 cloves1/2 tsp black peppercorns (crushed) 1/4 tsp nutmegHone

      HONEY MAY RELIEVE CHILDREN’S COUGH
Study finds more relief from honey than from cough medicineA single dose of buckwheat honey before bedtime provided the greatest relief from cough and sleep difficulty compared with no treatment and an over-the-counter cough medicine in children with upper respiratory tract infections, according to a report in the December issue of Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine.“Cough is the reason for nearly 3 percent of all outpatient visits in the United States, more than any other symptom, and it most commonly occurs in conjunction with an upper respiratory tract infection,” the authors write. Cough is usually more bothersome at night because it disrupts sleep.Although unsupported by the American Academy of Pediatrics or the American College of Chest Physicians, dextromethorphan is the most commonly used over-the-counter remedy for children’s cough. But that's not always true in other countries.“In many cultures, alternative remedies such as honey are used to treat upper

Is Honey More Effective Than Cough Medicine?
A research study has determined that children who get a dose of honey cough less and sleep better than those who get cough medicine with dextromethorphan (DM), the ingredient in most over-the-counter products for coughs. DM cough medicines, which earn about $50 million in sales each year, have previously been shown to be of little benefit to children. Honey has long been used as a natural remedy for sore throats and coughs. A common natural cure is honey with tea and lemon.Parents are advised not to give honey to any child under the age of 1 year; infants younger than that are at risk for botulism from honey.

      Showing a flaw - Buckley’s Cough Syrup
Listening to the radio today, I heard a very interesting ad. It began with an irate customer calling a cough syrup company. He complained that the cough syrup tasted horrible - likening it to a public portapotty (does anyone really know what those taste like?) and an old tire. The customer service representative asked - clearly unconcerned - if the customer still had his cough. “Um… No,” he mumbled. The rep warmly thanked him for calling… followed by a voice-over saying, “Buckley’s cough syrup. It tastes awful, and it works.” It’s an interesting approach to selling cough syrup, but it appears to work - because - for one - it gets people talking. “Hey, have you heard that weird cough syrup ad?” But it is also effective in that it increases the believability of Buckley’s more attractive claims. People automatically become suspicious when a company prattles on and on about how wonderful their product is. So when B

Sven is going to dump my sorry butt, if I don't start showing some signs of sweating. But I'm really trying!Well, I actually finished the next chapter in the book I've been writing. I'm in shock. The heavenly choir tuned up their vocal chords and belted out a stunning rendition of "Hallelujah" when I finished the last words on the page.(Needless, to say, if you haven't gathered it by now, this chapter was a real pain in the neck to write.)So I will let it let rest now. Heroin history: From cough medicine for kids to Trainspotting
I've always thought of heroin as morphine's older brother (cooler, tougher, associates with delinquents, popular with the ladies, etc.), which is funny, since morphine has been around since the opium poppy or whatever plant that preceded it first evolved the ability to make the compound. Heroin, however, was not brought into existence until 1874.Heroin was first synthesized by a dude named C.R. Alder Wright, who in addition to having lots of given names, was an English chemist employed at St. Mary's Hospital Medical School in London. Incidentally, Wikipedia has just informed me that St. Mary's was where Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin AND where Elvis Costello and Princes William and Harry were ushered into this fair world (read: born). Fascinating.Anyway, Wright was fiddling around with morphine and decided to boil it with acetic anhydride for a couple of hours to see what would happen. This process resulted in the acetylation of the morphine, producing a semi-synthetic com

KIDS’ COUGH MEDICINE RECALLED OVER DOSING ISSUE
Robitussin, Dimetapp caps may not give proper dosageSome children’s cough medicine is being recalled, not because of what’s in the bottle, but because of what’s on top of the bottle.Wyeth Pharmaceutical is recalling the products because the bottle caps, used to measure dosage, don’t accurately mark the half-teaspoon level recommended for children ages 2 to 5.Wyeth Consumer Healthcare, a division of Wyeth, announced a voluntary recall and replacement program for all U.S. retail outlets that sell several Robitussin products and Children’s Dimetapp Cold & Chest Congestion.“This action is specific to the dosage cup and not related to the medication itself,” Wyeth said in a statement. For children age two to under six, the Company is advising consumers not to use these medicines until the replacement products with the new cup are available.Link to complete story: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2007/11/cough_medicine.html~Sandy G.

      Home Remedies for Cough
By: Bakhru In case of severe cough, the patient should take only orange juice and water till the severity is reduced. The procedure is to take the juice of an orange diluted in warm water every two hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The patient should drink hot water freely. This will make the secretion thinner and less viscid, thereby loosening the cough.. The quantity of water should be considerable so as to cause a feeling of warmth and perspiration, giving much relief. The warm water enema should be used daily to cleanse the bowels. After the juice diet, the patient should adopt an all-fruit diet for two or three more days.In case of mild cough, the patient can begin with an all-fruit diet for five to seven days, taking three meals a day of fresh juicy fruits such as apples, pears, grapes, grape-fruit, oranges, pineapple, peaches and melon. For drinks, unsweetened lemon water or cold or hot plain water may be taken. After the all fruit diet, the patient should follow a well-balanced die

Children's cough and cold medicine pulled from shelves
Heard this on the news last night and received an email about it today. Apparently with the arrival of cold and flu season, parents are overdosing their infants on Tylenol, which has led to various infant cold medications being pulled from store shelves. Here's the email I received:The cough and cold season is here, and we have important information to share about infants' and children's cough and cold medicines. These medicines are generally recognized as safe and effective when used as directed. Most parents use these cough and cold medicines appropriately. However, we have become aware of rare instances of misuse leading to accidental overdose, especially in children under the age of two. Therefore, we are voluntarily withdrawing the following concentrated cough and cold medicines from the market:Concentrated Tylenol® Infants' Drops Plus ColdConcentrated Tylenol® Infants' Drops Plus Cold & CoughPediaCare® Infant Dropper DecongestantPediaCare® Infant Dropper Long-Acting Cough

How Cold and Cough Medicine Can Adversely Effect Your Child
What does cold medicine do to a young body when given in excess? In lieu of the recent voluntary recall of Children’s Tylenol products, which I find to be surprisingly responsible, I want to gain a stronger understanding of the adverse effects of some of the common active ingredients found in over the counter children’s medicines and the outward signs and symptoms. The first example being actameninophen, which is the main active ingredient in these Children’s Tylenol products and is generally used to reduce fevers. The recent recall has to do with the labeling of the product and not the contents - so it’s important to reiterate that actameninophen is a safe and helpful drug when taken in proper doses. But if taken in excess over an extended period (sited as greater than three to five days), it can cause liver damage and in extreme cases can cause liver failure. Since it is primarily metabolized by the liver the initial symptoms will be - nausea, vomiting, not f

Use With Caution - Cough and Cold Meds Not For Young Ones
There is a growing consensus among the medical community that cough and cold medicine should not be given to young children. According to the Federal Drug Administration (F.D.A.) this sentiment is not new. As far back as 1997, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued warning that cough medicines should not be used for lack of proof of their effectiveness. Since becoming a dad, I notice the FDA and CDC publish annual warnings regarding the use of over-the-counter cough and cold medicines every fall and winter. But looking further into the issue a few other key facts pop off the page as well, like the fact that the cough and cold medicines are a $2 billion industry (which to me translates to the potential of a heavy lobbying influence and impressive advertising efforts) and polls have revealed that over the past four decades there have been 54 reported deaths due to accidental overdosing in children under two years of age. Each year, about three children die from unintentional overdose

      Homemade Cough & Cold Remedy
It is getting to be that time of year again where everyone in our house is sniffing and coughing and just plain miserable. I have decided that this year I will tryout some home remedies. I will share some of the recipes with my readers of this blog. Here is the first one:Ginger Tea * 1 inch or so fresh ginger root, sliced thin or grated * 1/2 a fresh lemon, sliced (peel & all) * 1 clove garlic, mashed * ~2 c water * Very generous spoonful honey Place water, ginger, lemon, & garlic in saucepan; bring to boil, then turn down heat and simmer gently for 20 min. Strain into mugs and add lots of honey. The tea will get stronger if you let it sit! Most invigorating! The garlic adds a bit of bitterness, but the honey masks that. This tea is very soothing to the throat and warms and opens the chest and nasal passages. Plus there are a lot of those vitamins and other good things! Make this tea at the first sign of a cold. It is a lot more effective than the commercial hot lemon r

FDA Warns against giving Toddlers Cold & Cough Medicines
Basically the report, which is endorsed by the American Association of Pediactrics, the Consumer Healthcare Products Association, the Center for Disease Control and numerous other high end health and advocacy groups state that using over the counter Cold & Cough Medicines marketed for use with Toddlers and Infants do not work and have caused numerous deaths and emergency room visits. The FDA is meeting in October to discuss label changes stating the warnings. The preliminary recommendation, from Food and Drug Administration safety officials, would apply to decongestant use in children under 2, and antihistamines in those younger than 6 An FDA review of side-effect records filed with the agency between 1969 and September 2006, found 54 reports of deaths in children associated with decongestant medicines made with pseudoephedrine, phenylephrine or ephedrine. It also found 69 reports of deaths associated with antihistamine medicines containing diphenhydramine, brompheniramine or chlo

Cough in My Face, Pencil in Your Eye
After my transplant I developed an intense aversion to germs. I held my breath anytime somebody around me coughed, sneezed, burped, grunted, spoke, or exhaled. When I couldn’t hold any longer I would bury my face in my shirt, take a deep breath, and hold it again. It became instinctive. Spasmodic nocturnal cough.
Ramchandra, a boy of eight years, is usually quite healthy. He has a good appetite and has hardly ever fallen ill.Last month however, he began to cough, mostly at night, while he was asleep.Clinically, he was found to be quite normal. He was given all the routine medicines one would give in such a case, for symptomatic relief, but they gave him no relief. In fact, his nocturnal spasms increased in frequency and duration, and he began to sleep very poorly because of them.Investigations turned in negative reports. Finally, more out of having run out of medicines to give him, I gave him a potentised herbal extract of ARTEMISIA VULGARIS, called Cina in Homeopathy, as a routine de-worming exercise. From the next day, he began to pass bunches of small wriggling worms from his anus. By the end of the week he must have passed more than two hundred of them! ( And mind you, he had been given a course of Mebendazole, a worm medicine, barely a month before ).Simultaneously, the nocturnal spasms reduc
