The frequency of use for cough and cold medications for children has never before been scientifically studied. This new finding gives increased weight to recent revelations that cough and cold medication use can lead to serious adverse effects, including death. However, on a positive note, the overall use of cough and cold medications declined from 12.3 percent in 1999-2000 to 8.4 percent in 2005-2006.

My one year old Cher loves to imitate. Like most babies, she's tickled pink by fake coughing and we'll have long, coughing parties when she's feeling chummy. This morning I coughed in the kitchen and I heard Cher's delicate cough in return. I hammed it up and gave her a bigger cough. She reciprocated. Laughing, I faked a huge coughing fit while she went wild with her own coughing, rocking back and forth in her high chair. Then she suddenly stopped, her mouth hung open and her eyes started to water. With a gag, she spit up a huge chunk of blueberry pancake and then started screaming. Thanks goodness she got the pancake chunk out on her own. Oblivious me would have just laughed and made fun of her while she choked to death on my delicious pancakes. Then I'd have to put something awkwa

Cough relief for infants using home medicine

Instead of using Alopathy medicines, you can try this at home.Take 2 leaves of Tymol seeds and 2 leaves of holy basil and boil them in little water for couple of minutes. The water level reduces after few minutes. Remove the leaves and add half tea spoon of honey to the mix. Stir well and feed it to infants. This gives instantaneous relief where the baby throws up phlegm by vomiting. You can do the same for 3 to 4 times in a day. I have tried it and it has worked well for my baby.

      Showing a flaw - Buckley’s Cough Syrup
Listening to the radio today, I heard a very interesting ad. It began with an irate customer calling a cough syrup company. He complained that the cough syrup tasted horrible - likening it to a public portapotty (does anyone really know what those taste like?) and an old tire. The customer service representative asked - clearly unconcerned - if the customer still had his cough. “Um… No,” he mumbled. The rep warmly thanked him for calling… followed by a voice-over saying, “Buckley’s cough syrup. It tastes awful, and it works.” It’s an interesting approach to selling cough syrup, but it appears to work - because - for one - it gets people talking. “Hey, have you heard that weird cough syrup ad?” But it is also effective in that it increases the believability of Buckley’s more attractive claims. People automatically become suspicious when a company prattles on and on about how wonderful their product is. So when B

Heroin history: From cough medicine for kids to Trainspotting
I've always thought of heroin as morphine's older brother (cooler, tougher, associates with delinquents, popular with the ladies, etc.), which is funny, since morphine has been around since the opium poppy or whatever plant that preceded it first evolved the ability to make the compound. Heroin, however, was not brought into existence until 1874.Heroin was first synthesized by a dude named C.R. Alder Wright, who in addition to having lots of given names, was an English chemist employed at St. Mary's Hospital Medical School in London. Incidentally, Wikipedia has just informed me that St. Mary's was where Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin AND where Elvis Costello and Princes William and Harry were ushered into this fair world (read: born). Fascinating.Anyway, Wright was fiddling around with morphine and decided to boil it with acetic anhydride for a couple of hours to see what would happen. This process resulted in the acetylation of the morphine, producing a semi-synthetic com

      Home Remedies for Cough
By: Bakhru In case of severe cough, the patient should take only orange juice and water till the severity is reduced. The procedure is to take the juice of an orange diluted in warm water every two hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The patient should drink hot water freely. Children's cough and cold medicine pulled from shelves
Heard this on the news last night and received an email about it today. Apparently with the arrival of cold and flu season, parents are overdosing their infants on Tylenol, which has led to various infant cold medications being pulled from store shelves. Here's the email I received:The cough and cold season is here, and we have important information to share about infants' and children's cough and cold medicines. These medicines are generally recognized as safe and effective when used as directed. Most parents use these cough and cold medicines appropriately. However, we have become aware of rare instances of misuse leading to accidental overdose, especially in children under the age of two. Therefore, we are voluntarily withdrawing the following concentrated cough and cold medicines from the market:Concentrated Tylenol® Infants' Drops Plus ColdConcentrated Tylenol® Infants' Drops Plus Cold & CoughPediaCare® Infant Dropper DecongestantPediaCare® Infant Dropper Long-Acting Cough

How Cold and Cough Medicine Can Adversely Effect Your Child
What does cold medicine do to a young body when given in excess? In lieu of the recent voluntary recall of Children’s Tylenol products, which I find to be surprisingly responsible, I want to gain a stronger understanding of the adverse effects of some of the common active ingredients found in over the counter children’s medicines and the outward signs and symptoms. The first example being actameninophen, which is the main active ingredient in these Children’s Tylenol products and is generally used to reduce fevers. The recent recall has to do with the labeling of the product and not the contents - so it’s important to reiterate that actameninophen is a safe and helpful drug when taken in proper doses. But if taken in excess over an extended period (sited as greater than three to five days), it can cause liver damage and in extreme cases can cause liver failure. Since it is primarily metabolized by the liver the initial symptoms will be - nausea, vomiting, not f

Use With Caution - Cough and Cold Meds Not For Young Ones
There is a growing consensus among the medical community that cough and cold medicine should not be given to young children. According to the Federal Drug Administration (F.D.A.) this sentiment is not new. As far back as 1997, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued warning that cough medicines should not be used for lack of proof of their effectiveness. Since becoming a dad, I notice the FDA and CDC publish annual warnings regarding the use of over-the-counter cough and cold medicines every fall and winter. But looking further into the issue a few other key facts pop off the page as well, like the fact that the cough and cold medicines are a $2 billion industry (which to me translates to the potential of a heavy lobbying influence and impressive advertising efforts) and polls have revealed that over the past four decades there have been 54 reported deaths due to accidental overdosing in children under two years of age. Each year, about three children die from unintentional overdose

      Homemade Cough & Cold Remedy
It is getting to be that time of year again where everyone in our house is sniffing and coughing and just plain miserable. I have decided that this year I will tryout some home remedies. I will share some of the recipes with my readers of this blog. Here is the first one:Ginger Tea * 1 inch or so fresh ginger root, sliced thin or grated * 1/2 a fresh lemon, sliced (peel & all) * 1 clove garlic, mashed * ~2 c water * Very generous spoonful honey Place water, ginger, lemon, & garlic in saucepan; bring to boil, then turn down heat and simmer gently for 20 min. Strain into mugs and add lots of honey. The tea will get stronger if you let it sit! Most invigorating! The garlic adds a bit of bitterness, but the honey masks that. This tea is very soothing to the throat and warms and opens the chest and nasal passages. Plus there are a lot of those vitamins and other good things! Make this tea at the first sign of a cold. It is a lot more effective than the commercial hot lemon r

FDA Warns against giving Toddlers Cold & Cough Medicines
Basically the report, which is endorsed by the American Association of Pediactrics, the Consumer Healthcare Products Association, the Center for Disease Control and numerous other high end health and advocacy groups state that using over the counter Cold & Cough Medicines marketed for use with Toddlers and Infants do not work and have caused numerous deaths and emergency room visits. The FDA is meeting in October to discuss label changes stating the warnings. The preliminary recommendation, from Food and Drug Administration safety officials, would apply to decongestant use in children under 2, and antihistamines in those younger than 6 An FDA review of side-effect records filed with the agency between 1969 and September 2006, found 54 reports of deaths in children associated with decongestant medicines made with pseudoephedrine, phenylephrine or ephedrine. It also found 69 reports of deaths associated with antihistamine medicines containing diphenhydramine, brompheniramine or chlo

Cough in My Face, Pencil in Your Eye
After my transplant I developed an intense aversion to germs. I held my breath anytime somebody around me coughed, sneezed, burped, grunted, spoke, or exhaled. When I couldn’t hold any longer I would bury my face in my shirt, take a deep breath, and hold it again. It became instinctive. In fact, I’ve noticed that I’ll hold my breath after I hear somebody cough on TV. When I realize I’m the only person in the room, I breathe, and then punch myself in the face for being a moron.Last year for spring break I went to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, with some friends. My final class before break was Spanish 202, which I regrettably attended. I should have been practicing my pickup lines, but that’s another story. I showed up right on time and sat next to my friend.“I really don’t want to be here,” I said to him.“Me neither, but if I miss any more classes I get docked points,” he replied.I hadn’t missed a single class yet, and considered leaving. Ramchandra, a boy of eight years, is usually quite healthy. He has a good appetite and has hardly ever fallen ill.Last month however, he began to cough, mostly at night, while he was asleep.Clinically, he was found to be quite normal. He was given all the routine medicines one would give in such a case, for symptomatic relief, but they gave him no relief. In fact, his nocturnal spasms increased in frequency and duration, and he began to sleep very poorly because of them.Investigations turned in negative reports. Finally, more out of having run out of medicines to give him, I gave him a potentised herbal extract of ARTEMISIA VULGARIS, called Cina in Homeopathy, as a routine de-worming exercise. From the next day, he began to pass bunches of small wriggling worms from his anus. By the end of the week he must have passed more than two hundred of them! We collectively managed to mind control (D-Bo style) Sweet Lou into sending Novoa down (Yay!) but forgot about moving some of those vibes over Cedeno's way (Boo!). It's really starting to stretch out, besides the whole Prior/Wood saga. So, to make things fun, I'll be doing a live blog of today's game, pitting the Cubs against the L.A. of Anaheim in Orange County of the Golden State Angels. If you want to join in, feel free to do so. Heck, hijack it if you want, start talking about different stuff as you're watching the game. Dogs, Transformers, Punky Brewster, anything goes. Theodore Roosevelt will be taking the mound for the Cubbies, and here he is, proclaiming, "Yes!! Less than 10 days to go before we leave this desert!" For the Halos, Ervin Santana (aka the "other" Santana) will be the starter. Wikipedia, which, of course is the ultimate go-to for correct info, says Santana's nickname is

It happened about 2 months before I graduated from my high school, 1.5 months before the Senior Prom and 1 month before I was to perform the role of Hugo Peabody in my high school's elaborate production of Bye Bye Birdie: I got whooping cough (pertussis). How I got whooping cough, I have no idea. But, it kept me home from weeks of school and probably even gave me a very mild form of depression as I felt like the weeks that were supposed to be the highlight of my life up to that point were spent laying on my bed at home. In order to help me deal with being stuck at home all day for a couple weeks, my parents moved the computer desk into my room. This enabled me constant access to the Internet, which is where my Internet-addiction probably began... But instead of spending my time in AOL chat rooms or playing games, I did what any other 18 year old would have done: I decided to plan my life. I decided then that I would go to seminary. I wasn't really sure what seminary was...nor what

Turn Your Head and Cough - the Healthcare Industry's Prescription for Big Profits Through 2020
In a recent study, PricewaterhouseCoopers found that 90% of all healthcare leaders don't believe a taxpayer funded healthcare system is the solution to America's healthcare crisis. This is despite the fact that the federal and state governments are funding nearly 50% of current healthcare costs in the United States today, and that healthcare costs are expected to rise to the point where they consume 21% of US GDP by the year 2020. Without going into my personal feelings about “socialized medicine“ vs. the current U.S. healthcare model, I find it telling that in the PricewaterhouseCoopers study: When asked what are important or very important to the future sustainability of the nation's healthcare system, more than eight in 10 (82 percent) said equal access to care; two-thirds (66 percent) said market-driven competition, and nearly 4 in 10 (39 percent) that said medical technology would need to be rationed (emphasis mine). Yet the same study concluded that: Technology will p
