      Coral atoll
Reefs are the largest living structures in the world and the work of animals scarcely visible to the naked eye. Built on the slopes around the exposed peak of an underwater mountain, layer upon layer of coral skeletons accumulate, building a reef that can surround the island enclosing a lagoon. Coral animals play a great role by enlarging an island, consolidating its presence. The tentacles and mouths of polyps by the million strain the food from the sea, and secrete hard calcareous skeletons below and around themselves. Side by side and linked by flimsy tissues, they sit in tiny hollows into which they can withdraw, and in a concerted effort they build the magnificent edifice of a coral reef. If the sea level rises, or the seamount subsides, the island may sink from sight leaving onl

      Catching Fish, Killing Coral
Coral reefs can be directly affected by collecting activities associated with the aquarium trade. In some regions of the world, divers use poisons to make fish easier to catch. The chemicals can kill coral polyps, which take a long time to regrow. Like so many other places on the planet, coral reefs face even greater dangers from pollution and global warming. Unlike freshwater aquarium fish, the majority of saltwater fish are taken from their natural habitats rather than produced in hatcheries. Aquarists must recognize that they have a responsibility to avoid contributing to the degradation of coral reefs by their purchasing decisions. For more than twenty years I have involved myself in efforts to keep saltwater aquarium-keeping a sustainable hobby and industry. CORAL Publishes Marine Recreation Standards
CORAL publishes first ever regional standards for diving, snorkeling and boating activities. In areas of high volume tourism, repeated direct contact with the reef poses an immediate threat. Hundreds of boat groundings and hundreds of thousands of tourist interactions each year reduce sections of coral reef to rubble. Human contact also reduces coral’s resilience to other stressors such as rising sea temperatures and diseases. To get this look ensure your brows are well shaped with no stray hairs (bold does not mean bushy, nor does it mean monobrow!!), one way to give yourself an instant bolder look is to take some eyeshadow closest to your own natural colour & with a slanted eye brush (Try Mac's Small Angled Brow Brush - £13) define & deepen your brows, then take a brow comb through them afterwards to soften the finish.Coral lips have featured a lot this week & it is most definitely the colour of the moment, the buzz started after it featured during London Fashion

      Funafuti, a coral island
Funafuti, a coral islandFunafuti is a coral island and is an example of thousands which dot the surface of the Pacific. It is a circular island -- an atoll -- consisting of a ring of twentynine oddly shaped islets surrounding a central lagoon. It includes three hundred thirty-four acres and rises at its highest point but sixteen feet above the sea. The rock of the little islands which make up Funafuti is limestone made of chunks of coral and wind-blown coral sand, and the soil is a thin layer of decomposed limestone overlying hard rock. There are no streams; the water for drinking and cooking comes from shallow brackish wells or is rain water caught in bowls. The island is too low to intercept the rain-bearing clouds; rain falls just as it does over the open ocean, and droughts may occur any year or several times in a year. Because the soil of the island is thin and lacks the vegetable mold necessary to the growth of many species of plants, there are only a few kinds of trees and shrub

However, some fashionista's that are way ahead of the game seem to think that this orangey-pink color palette is the perfect way to stand out in the crowd. I beg to differ. While I'm not particularly even fond of the cuts on Diane and Eva, I'm really more concerned about V-Beck's use of motorcycle gloves with formal wear. I think that perhaps I could stomach all of these looks if they were in a more appealing color. But I digress. It seems like the big trend right now is to NOT go with the holiday flow, and to shy away from traditional holiday colors. Red and Green are SO out, and brown, taupe and black are just too boring I guess. The sparkly stuff is still big, but if you want to be on the up and up, wear some out of season color like these celebs. Not rea

Coral Reef Color, A Fish's-Eye View - National Geographic Magazine
Coral Reef Color, A Fish's-Eye View - National Geographic Magazine"Startling greens, blues, yellows, and reds paint the creatures of the reefs. Scientists are learning to decipher the messages these colors convey and to see them the way fish do.Gaze at the vivid yellows, blues, and psychedelic swirls of a single emperor angelfish and you'll sense the whimsy of evolution. Go on to explore its home in lush coral reefs and you'll soon hit sensory overload, assaulted by colors and patterns that range from sublime to garish. Coral reefs are unquestionably the world's most colorful places. But why?Scientists have long known that color plays a role in sexual selection and warning of danger. But only in the past decade or so have we begun to understand how wavelengths of light (and therefore color) appear at different depths and how various marine creatures' eyes perceive this light and see each other—far differently than humans see them.To document how reef animals use color, I joined

      Coral Calcium Benefits
By: Noah Liebsch Falsely touted in TV infomercials as a miracle cure for so many diseases, coral calcium is nonetheless an important mineral with many documented benefits. Its origin is traced to Okinawa, Japan, where it is harvested from the corals of the seas there. The Okinawa coral calcium comes from coral in the Japanese seas, which feed on plankton, resulting in high calcium levels. When the coral dies, it either descends to the ocean floor or is washed up on the floor. Of the two forms of the coral, the above sea is preferred for the purposes of making the coral calcium supplement. The reason for this is that the coral that sits on the ocean floor is contaminated with pollutants from the ocean, and therefore must be heated at very high temperatures to purge it of all contaminants. Additionally, the process of dredging up this coral involves a vacuum process that inadvertently kills other sea creatures in the process. The above sea coral calcium, on the other hand, suffers from no

      Save The Coral Reefs
my friend passed this email to me and I thought I’d share it with you all. Sign the petition as it only takes literally a few seconds to do. ————————————————— Sorry to blast a mass email like this to you guys (and to everyone to whom I owe a call or email, the reason I have appeared to have dropped off the face of the earth is that I am up to my eyeballs with work)! It’s been crazy, but great–as with any new job, I am really under the gun these first few months to show that I can make the organization successful. Soooo. This is the first public petition going out under my watch, and I am under a lot of pressure to ensure that it is a really, really successful drive. The petition is a pretty common sense one–we’re asking for our federal and state agencies in Hawaii to adopt “responsible science” principles for research conducted in the remote

The Coral - Roots And Echoes
