Wednesday's disgraceful debate got me thinking. If George Stephanopoulos can ask Barack Obama about his insubstantial ties to a former radical, then why can't someone ask John McCain to explain his relationships with some rather unsavory characters, including convicted felons? Let's start with one here–there will be more to come.
Notorious Watergate burglar G. Gordon Liddy is a McCain supporter. In fact, Liddy, who at one time plotted to murder a journalist, has been donating money to McCain for the past decade. Liddy calls McCain "a good, personal friend". McCain has appeared on Liddy's radio show. and McCain's website provides call-in info to Liddy's show, asking supporters to contact the ex-con.
Liddy didn't exactly turn squeaky clean when he emerged from prison.

Focusing on the Country Club of the South neighborhood and other high-end developments and subdivisions in metro Atlanta, Keith Garner and his co-conspirators bought properties in the name of their straw borrowers, often without the straw borrower's consent. Each of the properties was accompanied by an inflated appraisal, which in addition to the submission of false loan applications, enabled the defendants to secure real estate financing from SunTrust Mortgage in excess of the fair market value of the properties. The defendants then stole the spread between the inflated and fair market value of the properties primarily through defendants Latesha Garner and Khodadad, who ensured that SunTrust Mortgage either directly paid a bogus seller's obligation or was never made aware that a substanti

A Spanish court has sentenced 21 people to jail terms for the 2004 Madrid train bombings. Now for the political fallout.

With one blow, a three-judge panel at the Spanish High Court today convicted 21 people for the 2004 terror attacks on its commuter trains and undermined a three-year-old political conspiracy theory about the Al Qaeda-inspired violence.
After a two-year investigation and a nearly five-month-long trial that included about 750 witnesses, the court ruled unanimously to sentence 21 of the 29 defendants to prison terms ranging from three to 40,000 years for various counts of homicide, attempted homicide, belonging to and collaboration with a terrorist group, falsifying documents and trafficking in explosives.
The largest prison terms went to Moroccans Jamal Zougam and Othman el Gnaoui and Spaniard Emilio Suárez Trashorras. Zougam and El Gnaoui received nearly 40,000 years in prison for the 191 people killed and 1,800 injur

Since 2002 Neil Stanley Higgs (owner of Mr. Modchips) has been distributing and selling illegally chipped games consoles which have apparently made him over £1 million pounds.
Now the 39-year-old who lives in the Bristol area (UK) has been convicted and found guilty of 26 offences.
These offences include 3 counts of “advertising, supplying and selling modification chips” which have given gamers the ability to play illegally copied games on their consoles.
While many gamers want to back up their games because they have had many discs damaged, there are also many gamers who like to buy copied games which of course are illegal.
Neil Stanley Higgs days were numbered when investigators from “Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association” found he was selling illegal chips on his website.
Higgs has now made an appeal, so things are not over yet.

I love it when a story comes full circle.
Back in July I posted a story about a man who was accused of having sex with a bike.
This morning I am surfing the glorious WWW and come across a story that the same poor SOB has been convicted of the above mentioned bike sex crime.
On Wednesday Mr Stewart admitted to sexual breach of the peace in Ayr Sheriff Court, where depute fiscal Gail Davidson described how he had been found by the hostel workers.
“The accused was holding the bike and moving his hips back and forth as if to simulate sex.”
Here is the real bitch of the whole thing. This guy was put on the sex offenders’ register. Is there a special section of the register just for people who have been convicted of violating inanimate objects? I am all for the human on human sex offender list but does bike sex guy really deserve to be listed? If this guy had been caught humping a Cup Nude would he have been given the same punishment?

A 21-year old Edmonton, Alberta man who shot his pregnant childhood friend because he believed the unborn child she was carrying was Lucifer's baby was found guilty yesterday of first-degree murder Jared Baker testified at his trial that he became convinced he was the son of Satan and by "crushing the serpent's head" -- meaning killing Ms. Talbot and the fetus -- he could "walk like Jesus." Jurors were told that Mr. Baker believed the unborn baby was talking to him in his dreams, asking him to take its life and that the government had planted a transmitter in his head. He maintained that his delusions were the result of drug use.
Prosecutors determined that Baker had shot 19-year old Olivia on November 25, 2005,due to anger over her drug use which was potentially harmful to a baby that he had believed was his. On the day of the murder, he took a gun from his basement, snorted crystal methamphetamine, and then went to her house. After being invited in, he stated "Sorry, O.V." an

Former Madang governor and MP James Yali was sentenced to jail in January 2006 for raping the 17-year-old sister of his de facto wife in October 2004.
Despite the fact he was in jail, he was allowed to stand for election as an MP in the Rai Coast electorate because he is appealing against his rape conviction.
...
If Yali does not win his appeal before the Supreme Court, his election will be declared invalid and a by-election will have to be held.

An eye for an eye... Doesn't sound very Christian-like to me, what these Christians have been up to on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. And as usual, when you can't get to the people you really want to hurt, kill some innocent victims instead:
A dozen Christian men were convicted today and sentenced to up to 14 years in jail for beating to death and beheading two Muslims to avenge the government executions of three Christians in Indonesia last year.
Five other Christians received eight-year terms for burying the pair, who were set upon by a mob as they drove though a Christian neighborhood on Sulawesi island a day after the Sept. 22, 2006, executions of Fabianus Tibo and two other Christian militants.
The three executed Christians had been found guilty of leading a militia that killed at least 70 Muslims during a 1999-2002 religious war on the island that led to the deaths of at least 1,000 people from both faiths.

(CHICAGO) — A federal jury convicted fallen media tycoon Conrad Black and three of his former executives at Hollinger International Inc. Friday of illegally pocketing money that should have gone to stockholders.
Black, 62, was convicted of three counts of mail fraud and one count of obstruction of justice. He faces a maximum of 35 years in prison for the offenses, plus a maximum penalty of $1 million.
He was acquitted of nine other counts, including racketeering and misuse of corporate perks, such as taking the company plane on a vacation to Bora Bora and billing shareholders $40,000 for his wife’s birthday party. Black, sitting at a table with his attorneys, did not show any emotion when the verdict was read. After U.S. District Judge Amy St. Eve briefly adjourned the court, his wife, Barbara Amiel Black, and his daughter, Alana, leaned over to console him.
While the verdict was mixed, the conviction signaled an increasing trend of aggressive U.S. government pursuit of senio
Convicted rapist at Labour event - A businessman with a rape conviction attended a fundraising event for the Labour Party, the BBC reveals. [BBC Politics]
Ok....so a convicted rapist attended a political event.
Whats the problem here? It happened in 1996 for gods sake. Presumably since the man is wandering around free, he has completed any punishment the courts set down for him.
If you don't feel that the punishment set down for him was enough or appropriate, then thats something YOU need to deal with. I would suggest lobbying your local MP for some serious justice and penalty reform.
I am in no way condoning what this man has done, to rape any man or woman is unforgivable. I am not suggesting he be forgiven and have no doubts about it, he won't be. That offence will be on his record forever, like a port wine stain on his face.

Another one on Swindler's List:
Former media mogul Conrad Black was convicted Friday of swindling the far-flung Hollinger International newspaper empire he once ran out of millions of dollars, becoming the latest in a wave of disgraced corporate executives to face prison time for financial fraud.
Black, 62, who once renounced his Canadian citizenship to become a member of the British House of Lords, was found guilty by a federal jury of three counts of mail fraud and one count of obstruction of justice for spiriting documents out of his Toronto office in defiance of a court order.

The three-month trial drew international media attention, heightened by the silver-haired British lord's posh lifestyle and sometimes haughty comments. When shareholders grumbled about the cost of the Bora Bora trip, he wrote a memo saying: "I'm not prepared to re-enact the French revolutionary renunciation of the rights of the nobility."

Genarlow Wilson (now 21) was sentenced to 10 years in prison for receiving consensual oral sex from a 15 year old girl when he was 17. Wilson’s lawyers recently asked an appellate judge to throw out the aggravated child molestation sentence saying that the punishment is disproportionate to the crime. MSNBC writes that defense attorney B.J. Bernstein noted that state lawmakers passed a law to close a loophole that led to Wilson’s sentence. However, prosecutor Paula Smith argued that the new law cannot be applied retroactively.
The sentence Wilson received has even been denounced by members of the jury that convicted him. The author of the 1995 law that put Wilson behind bars disagrees with Wilson’s punishment. “The law was designed to protect kids against really, really bad people doing very bad things,” said the sponsor, former state Rep. Matt Towery, a Republican. “It was never intended to put kids in jail for oral sex.”

This is something that I wrote about two years ago, about an Israeli police offier who committed an act of violence against a right-wing protestor during the disengagement monstrosity, totally out of line in any democratic society. Now, he and another one involved in this have been convicted of their crime, which in my mind was done out of their political positions(?):(IsraelNN.com) The Tel Aviv Magistrates Court has found two policemen guilty of brutality against an "orange" anti-Disengagement protestor - thanks to an on-site video taken by Arutz-7 journalist-cameraman Tuvia Lerner. The two Yassam-unit policemen, Eran Naim and Eliran Avraham, were found guilty of beating demonstrator Akiva Vitkin without cause during an anti-Disengagement road-blocking demonstration on June 29, 2005. Naim is seen in the video appearing to be trying to pull Vitkin's nose off by sticking his fingers in his nostrils from behind and pulling up, and Avraham later beat Vitkin repeatedly in the police statio
