A baby asked God:They tell me you are sending me to earth tomorrow, but how am I going to live there being so small and helpless? God said, 'Your angel will be waiting for you and will take care of you.'The child further inquired, 'But tell me, here in heaven I don't have to do anything but sing and smile to be happy.' God said, 'Your angel will sing for you and will also smile for you. And you will feel your angel's love and be very happy.'Again the child asked, 'And how am I going to be able to understand when people talk to me if I don't know the language?' Why is it that we cannot have an honest conversation about the Bush economic record?
During the Clinton administration, all we heard about was how great the economy supposedly was. The record low unemployment rates were always one of the figures touted.Yet, as soon as George W Bush became President, all of a sudden we started playing by a different set of rules. In the fall of 1996, Slick Willy was running for reelection on a so-called nirvana economy, with an unemployment rate of 5.9%. Yet, today, despite all the oil shocks and credit crunches, our current National unemployment rate sits at at a rate of 4.95%. That is just shy of a full percentage point better than nirvana. Despite all of the doom and gloom, the Bush economy is not in a recession. In fact, the Bush economy has grown each month that his economic plan has been in effect-77 in a row. If you compare the averag

Reading articles about Pakistan on the BBC's website these days brings up a link to this article in the sidebar–a constant reminder of Musharraf's tenuous position as Pakistan's president. And yet, almost two months after Pakistan's long-awaited parliamentary elections, Musharraf is still president and no serious opposition to his rule has risen out of the popular anti-Musharraf sentiment voiced at the polls. In the international arena, Musharraf's power doesn't appear to be dwindling. Pakistan's Dawn reports that Musharraf has been working to secure a new free trade agreement with China, to boost commercial and economic ties between the two Asian nations. But domestically, two obstacles to Musharraf's future in Pakistan's politics are looming large. The first, which was large

The two worst words to start a conversation
For me it's, "brace yourself." That always gets me. Brace myself? For what? While I was still at work tonight, my friend sent me an IM with those words and immediately I froze. This is the same friend I recently wrote about for making a poor decision by getting back together with her ex-fiance.Before she asked me those two words, I was tempted to ask her about this guy and how they ended up together again, but "brace yourself" was much more compelling. I was expecting any of the following: pregnancy, marriage, engagement or break-up. While I was hoping for the last one, it turned out that number one was right - pregnancy. After yelling (out loud) "oh my god!" she proceeded to tell me that she was not only pregnant but recently suffered a miscarriage. Fortunately, she is fine (thank goodness)

By: Mimi Rothschild “I have never let my schooling interfere with my education.” Mark said as he used a feather and ink to scribble down a phrase on the back of a napkin. “What, isn’t school and education the same?” Mark’s friend, Ignorance, asked. Mark shook his head as he looked into the mirror at his age and [...]

      Assumptions Are Conversation Killers
In my work as an executive coach I have found that the single biggest mistake that people make is assuming that competence and performance are their ticket to success; when in fact they are merely the price of admission. Most people are good performers. It’s a huge mistake to think that good performance is the [...]

      Actual Overheard Conversation
I walked into the tail-end of a conversation this morning at the nurses' station. I don't have any idea how it started. It was between one male doctor and about 4 female nurses.Doctor: I'd really rather have one experienced woman than 70 virgins.Nurse1: Not interested in the virgins, huh?Doctor: Well, it's not that I'm against virgins, it's just that they'd all probably be 15, 16 or 17 -- you know how crazy girls are at that age.Nurse2: Yeah, they'd probably be texting you all the time.Nurse3: Do you think I'm pretty?Nurse4: I'm outside your house right now.Nurse2: I'm thinking about you, are you thinking about me?Nurse1: Who was that girl you were with last night?Nurse4: Do you think I'm fat?I can kind of see his point.

The Municipal Bond Conversation Moves Forward
3 Mar 2008 - Felix Salmon over at Market Movers on Portfolio.com has some interesting commentary on how municipal ratings between different firms diverge and some commentary on this NYT article this morning.  Many thanks to Abnormal Returns for drawing attention to The Prince’s idea for how municipal bond issuers should respond to the current market for insurance.  Felix has two earlier posts, here and here, worth taking a look at on the subject of muni bond yields.  Naked Capitalism also weighs in here on the ratings agency conflicts in muni bonds.  Dealbreaker offers a little more commentary on the NYT article.

Talk is cheap? £15 million for the NHS Conversation!
The Department of Health wants to know what Londoners think of the NHS, and is blowing £15 million to find out in an ill-conceived public relations disaster called the NHS Conversation. Sadly, we don’t seem so eager to tell them – a mere 1500 people have responded to the first questionnaire, and enthusiasm doesn’t seem to be mounting for the next round. The Sunday Mirror has the full story here. Fortunately all is not lost and, if he plays his cards right, health supremo Lord Ara Darzi (check out his pedigree in Wikipedia) need not face the total humiliation that this farcical scheme so richly deserves. You see, both NHS Exposed and the NHS Exposed Blog are reasonably large and fairly popular websites dedicated to the National Health Service. Many of our visitors come from search en

We’re supposed to have lunch together that week, but unexpected things suddenly pops-up so bottom line was I wasn’t able to join the “Geek Squad” over lunch. So to patch things up, I invited them for a coffee – my treat. It was a lousy Tuesday night – all of us having a hangover from the long weekend. Not to mention that I watched for the nth time previous Gundam series and episodes of Naruto, that’s how boring my weekend was. Anyway, I’m itching to go home early, uhm not to mention that it’s raining outside so it’s really tempting to hug my pillows and have a good sleep. So the agendas, we talked about their new office, paranormal things (third eye, rituals, etc.), our blogs,

Along the way I heard a few comments about the condo market.I overheard a bicyclist telling his riding partner that developers ‘think there is endless demand for those condos’. Then while walking around the So What district I overheard a woman exclaim to her husband, 'Wait! They’re building more?’, about the Mirabella retirement building.Have you noticed a shift in the local conversation? I sure have.

Ryan sit down and have your lunch". I chided him for climbing up on the chair and trying to disturb Roy who I was busy feeding." No~I'm not hungry I do not need to eat, " He replied.Trying out my latest resolution not to get easily angered with him I told him that it was fine that he doesn't want to eat but everyone else at the table is going to have their lunch. Interesting Conversation...
I had an interesting conversation with a teacher in a different movement discipline. He said that teachers who give students a ton of material, or a bunch of technically difficult material, do so because they aren't comfortable with their own level of skill. He went on to say that there are a multitude of nuances in a single movement that can be explored in an entire class. If a teacher can do that, the teacher shows a depth of knowledge that will benefit the student far more than learning a lot of things poorly. I tend to agree with him, but I think in a world of 8 week wonders and pow-pow-pow dancers, it's difficult to sell that to an American belly dance student. This dance form just formed so differently than ballet or jazz, for example. It's more about getting out there and having fun

Conversation :: Pakistan :: No. 8—”Rethinking” U.S. Aid to Pakistan
The front-page of today’s The New York Times (online) has a lengthy article assessing the failures of U.S. military aid to Pakistan. It states: After the United States has spent more than $5 billion in a largely failed effort to bolster the Pakistani military effort against Al Qaeda and the Taliban, some American officials now acknowledge that there were too few controls over the money. The strategy to improve the Pakistani military, they said, needs to be completely revamped. There are several problems at the heart of the U.S. program’s failure (e.g.,it is ineffective against terrorism, it helped/s to prop up Musharraf’s military regime, it makes the world less stable), but the majority of the problems stem from the lack of supervision or accountability attached to U.S. aid; there are no procedures in place to make sure the aid to Pakistan is either being directed toward its intended purposes or being used most efficiently. As a result, “Bush administration a

Conversation with a Chinese Massage Therapist
I met Liu Lu when I went for a foot massage in a small shop near my house. Liu Lu was my assigned foot massage therapist and it was soon obvious that she was a notch better than most local foot massage therapists I had experienced in Singapore. I struck up a conversation with her… Liu Lu is from Shandong, China and had recently move to Singapore to continue to work as a massage therapist. She grew up in Wei Hai, Shandong, China and had enrolled in the Shandong College for Traditional Chinese Medicine in Jinan for a massage therapist diploma. Liu Lu explained that one can qualify to be a traditional massage therapist in 3-years in most Traditional Chinese Medicine College in China. The courses she had to study were rigorous and included studying the body meridian, acupuncture, guasha, tuina, bagua, accupressure, reflexology, detoxification and others. She also had to do a one year internment in a Chinese hospital before she could graduate as a fully qualified traditional TCM mass

You had asked that cute girl out, she had said yes, and you had found yourself wrapped up in rosy visions of kissing, canoodling and her laughing wildly at your jokes. And then you realized. Jokes. Conversation. The most intimidating part is yet to come: you've got a first date to go on and you don't know what to say.Suddenly you're scared of uncomfortable silences. You've convinced yourself you'll offend her with every word you utter and the only sentence she'll be saying is, "Sorry, I've got to go."Well, calm yourself down. That isn't going to happen. You see, I know how to make first date conversation - and I'm about to share my secrets with you.The first trick is to act calm and comfortable even when you're not. This isn't hard to do. Keep your hands still and your body turned towards her. Lean back a little, make eye contact and give her a genuine smile. Every so often, ask yourself if your shoulde

      A Late Night Conversation
Should pastors who cheat on their wives be able to teach from the pulpit? If you believe they should, should homosexuals be allowed to preach from the pulpit as well? When I was posed with this question from my boyfriend. I was a little taking off. At first I said I do think men who fall into sin and cheat on their wives, should still be able to preach; but to be gay and preach from the pulpit is not right. I myself was not sure why these two sins are so left and right. I then posed the question to my dad. He said: Homosexuality is demonic and should not be condoned at all, while cheating on your wife or spouse (for female pastors), is a sin. What is everyone's take on this? Does any one agree or disagree with this statement. My dad did make it very clear that he is not saying homosexuals
